I think realistically these cars should be used in combination. The Amex Platinum being used for all travel purchases and the Amex Gold being the workhorse card for all other purchases. The spending categories on the platinum do not make it a great point earning card, but the credit and benefits it comes with are super extensive! Great video Kevin.

@@matth7029 I think you bring up some good points! Personally I get a lot of use out of the Gold card because I use the monthly credits, but if that's something you don't use then it wouldn't be worth it at all. I think there's a kind of allure that comes with getting these luxury metal cards that people fall into even if the cards don't make sense for them. It's always important to do your due diligence!

Chase is way better when it comes to traveling compared to Amex platinum because think about 3 points on any traveling category compared to only 5 for direct airlines or through Amex portal. Amex platinum is only worth it if you use their premium lounges a lot. Gold is good but then I still can’t pair it easily with the other spending categories like travel spending. Unless you use multiple trifecta , it is quite challenging.

I got curious and applied and got approved which I was not expecting at all. I’m 19 and have a Discover Student Chrome and Apple Card and have only been using credit cards since July (3 months ago as of the time of writing) I was super not expecting it so I didn’t have a plan so I declined. I like the credits to offset the annual fee but I still don’t know since I won’t use any of the travel perks, given I’m a college student, so that’s a good bit unused. Those points do look good and getting $600 as a signup bonus for expenses I already make is cool. Really debating getting it.

Man I didn’t realize the Platinum gave Walmart plus as a benefit. I live in Atlanta so Walmarts are literally everywhere and that’s where I always get my groceries. It sucks that the gold card points benefit doesn’t work at Walmarts. In my case I think the blue cash card and the platinum would be the best for me. The Uber credit (200), Walmart (155), Saks (100), Hotel (200) and airline credit (200). I’ll even sign up for the Disney plus bundle just to make use of it (240). Plus the TSA precheck fee (85). The flight points benefit is better on the platinum than the gold and the only separator in my case would be the restaurants. I don’t think that alone justifies the $250 annual fee though. The platinum alone though would give me almost $1200 in annual benefits not even including the intro offer. Thank you for the breakdown!

Got both and always get more $ in return every year. Platinum I use the $200 incidental because I'm not loyal to any airline, the $240 entertainment credit is great in my case and the $200 Uber credit is easy to use, for a total of $640 back in my case and the Saks $100 credit to get my $ money back. I've gotten Hilton suites upgrades several times with the Gold status and love the free airport lounges, insurances, extended warranties and much more. For the Gold I also find the credits easy to use and at the end they pay me over $40 to use their card and all the benefits. Can't say the same for Chase. Capital One Venture X might be the only card that provides a good 1 card setup and you get paid $5 to use it but I prefer AMEX partners and costumer service. Thanks for the info.

Question: Where do I see my MR points sign up bonus on my account? I signed up with the Amex gold with 90k MR point sign up bonus but I cant find it if I recieved it anywhere in my documents or on my account to keep track of for the 6months.

@@curmudgeonextraordinaire1884 Of course, however it's all a calculation. For example are the 4x points on the everyday categories worth it for the $250 a year? Personally I would still consider it given I value MR points a lot!
But for some others, it may not be worth it and another card may better suit there needs.
