Thanks man, that‘s the only thing I did, when I started out... figuring songs out by ear.... I just listened to a song and tried to play it. The internet or tabs weren‘t a thing to me. I think thats was one of my advantages... There was no „I dont wanna use a tab, i wanna train my ear“ situation... There were no tabs or videos, so I HAD to do it by ear... I remember I would even write tabs myself on paper and give them to my friends... Also i haven‘t always listened to metal.. back then it was Punkrock, after a while I started listening to heavy/power/thrash/ metal and later on gotten into melodic death metal... By the time i even started to think about technical stuff I had already played over ten years and of course trained my ears all that time...(been playing around 18 years now)... So I had a constant progression in difficulty...The thing nowadays is, that we have so many options and are constantly fed with visuals of other players, which is a nice motivation, but can also lead to pressuring oneself, whereas when your‘e isolated and dont even know that other things exist, you just do it for the fun of it and at some point you can do stuff^^ Also very important: People dont see how TEDIOUS it is for me to figure out a first fragment song. It’s the most unfun thing in the world and requires lots of Patience... The listening skill might be one thing but actually you just have to be willing to pause the song A LOT!!! It‘s days filled with hours of pausing the song every half a second just to rewind and do it again because I can‘t hear shit. Believe me, it‘s very frustrating work for me too, I just sit through it... I guess for my covers it‘s a competitive thing too, because I mostly choose songs that haven’t been done, so I‘m kinda challenging myself too... Until I regret it very fast because its hard af. I guess I wanna say you‘re not alone!! 1. Pause the song a lot! 2. Use software or youtube to slow the songs down, to help you with even trickier parts. 3. Learn Minor/harmonic minor/phrygian dominant scales. Many tech songs are written logically, so sometimes even if you cant fully make out a note, the scale will help you. Also if you know your scales, you know which notes NOT to play, which is almost more important than knowing which notes to play. 4. Try to make sure you can ‚sing‘ the melody you wann play. Stop the song and only use your own voice to make out the riff/melody... 5. Maybe dont choose Techdeath as a start :P I dont know where you’re at with your playing/listening but Maiden is always good. Many simple and tricky lead parts. 6. Maybe tab out your version of a riff and compare it to an already existing tab. Make sure the tab is correct though, there‘s a lot of wrong stuff out there... 7. And as everyone tells you: Give it time, have fun, patience blablabl :) Just remember, it‘s hard as hell for me too, and honestly I‘m over covering techdeath songs lol... Anyway... have fun and keep shredding!!!
Fabirukas Fabirukas Fabirukas Yeah that part sucks. Sometimes I try to look for the lowest note in a song and in many cases thats the lowest open string. Sometimes I check out tabs of other songs from that band or playthroughs on youtube.. I didnt know the tuning to „sermon de tsion“, so I just tuned the guitar as if the song was in A (harmonic) minor, because thats the scale I know best... for l‘entité there was a playthrough by first fragment on yt so that helped... before I did the equipoise videos though, i just thought of asking them directly on facebook, which I did and they responded and even offered me a tab... So there‘s many ways to find out the tuning, but in the end you can play it however you like... After I posted the ‚within the ruins‘ covers, people pointed out that they‘re tuned very differently from what I thought and used in my videos, but I just kind of put the song where I wanted it to be on my fretboard and which made most sense to me (scale and comfort-wise)...
Great video i wish you would start doing solos as well really show off i feel like you would have the skills to do so i remember watching your gula cover of first fragment and was really impressed but got disappointed you avoided the solos let the magic happen bro
ross campbell thanks for your confidence, but while you FEEL I‘m able to play their solos, I KNOW that I can‘t... That‘s why I don’t play them (duh ;P)... Honestly though there is one solo in this one I could play, I just forgot... But anything Phil Tougas is playing, forget it... On top of that... It‘s nearly killing me to learn the songs in general, especially by ear, so me doing the solos is not worth my time and effort, because at some point the fun part gets lost... So me doing the solos is a decision I deliberately make because I want it... If there‘s tabs, that‘s another thing, but by ear... nope :) Also... a bit more respect to rhythm sections! I let the solo dudes do the solos :)
