    It's vital for people to understand that the deadlift is a pushing leg exercise, not a pulling back exercise. Not at all to say it doesn't work the back, but if you treat it like a pull, you will hurt your low back. Treat it like a standing leg press, and stick your rear out. That helped fixed my deadlift. Ironically, focusing on that, and not keeping my back flat, actually helped keep my back flatter and kept it from bending on heavier weights.

    • @ericcarson342

      It's still a hip dominant move unlike the leg press which is knee dominant. It's a pull for the simple fact your arms being attached to the bar, otherwise it's a hip thrust.

    • @jmcsquared18
      @jmcsquared18 10 месяцев назад +15

      @@ericcarson342 your arms do almost no mechanical work on the deadlift.
      Yes, it's more like a hip thrust than a leg press, but in terms of the mechanics, it's absolutely a push (which the hip thrust and leg press both are).

      @komalthecoolk 10 месяцев назад +2

      The problem is that you can't do this pushing motion with the legs with light weights. Your back comes in too easily. So beginners starting with low weight always learn wrong.

      Yes 100% and did you see how consistant her reps where. I normally whatch all videos on 2x speed and that makes most wiggles and sways more obvious but she looked like a robot (in a good way). Check 5:15 at 2x speed, uncanny.

      yes this is awesome. it kind of goes across most sports. i’m a not great at golfing but i do golf a lot and i actually enjoy watching women’s golf more because everything is so smooth and technical. the men are better athletes (i don’t mean this negatively towards women) so they do a lot more stuff in their swings. same with women’s basketball, i actually don’t like watching that but if you wanna learn technical and the right way to play, they can’t play above the rim so it’s good for young kids to watch the basics from professional women

      Agree on all of the above. When I used to play a lot of tennis and I wanted to work on ground strokes and consistency, I would play a good female. I went to a college that was loaded with a lot of good tennis players. It was fun being able to go all out in tennis against a young lady.

    Just wanted to come back here to say you absolutely saved my back. I was having serious back pain with deadlifts but after watching your video I tried yesterday and zero pain afterwards. Just woke up feeling great.
    The one tip I took from it that changed everything is to approach DL like a push (legs) movement not pulling (arms). Thank you ❤

    Deadlifts are just a great compound lift. I’m 65 and discovered them later in life. I thought they were just for meat head lifters. Boy was I wrong! I have Multiple Myeloma, which can make you prone to spinal compression fractures. I use a trap bar to minimize awkward loading on the spine, keep the weight at 185 lbs. or less and focus on doing AMRAPs. Just doing a lot of reps at 135 feels like a HIIT workout! Heart rate goes through the roof!

    A key for me is like she says, “a big breath, brace through your body.” The exercise is a pull with driving your legs into the floor. Think falling backwards pulling while your legs push as hard as they can and your spine is as straight and as braced as you can. Do low reps 3-5 sets of 1-5 reps.

    Sumo deadlift makes it harder for me to lift as much weight- i do more on a conventional deadlift. It all depends on how you are built and where your leg strength is. There is more quad and glute work being done in a sumo deadlift. My back is much stronger and my hamstrings & abductors so that’s why I think this set up is tough but I want to try Sumo more still.
