      Sonic booms only occur when accelerating through the speed of sound not when slowing down!

    • @Lewythefly
      @Lewythefly 2 месяца назад

      @@johnnym6700 because of the distance away that people are when recording it, the sound of the boom is deejayed compared to the footage. Speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. That's why the sound of a fighter jet follows behind the jet or a clap of thunder comes after the lightning when at a distance

      Given the funding and the remit, then yes, they probably could.

    • @dogmannz
      @dogmannz 2 месяца назад

      @@yassassin6425 No they couldn't. Because (apart from constant political meddling) the biggest problem with the NASA model was cost plus contracts with the suppliers. In other words NASA constantly wrote blank cheques which is why their costs were astronomical. Look at what's currently happening with SLS. One of the contractors has spent over $240 million to design a launch tower. WTF?
      The contractors talked down and even refused to do anything towards reusability. Because if something was reusable the contractor lost the profit they would make out of constructing it new for every launch.
      This sort of thing (return to launch site) was discussed with the solid boosters for the shuttle way back in the 70's before it was firmly decided to make them solids. One of (if not) the reason solids were chosen was the contractors all dismissed the "reuse" (return to launch site) model, and in doing this talked up the advantages of solids knowing no reuse was possible because you can't relight them. So no burn back, no landing burn so no return to the launch site.
      Instead we ended up with "reuse" of the solids being to tow them back to shore by boat, dismantle them, ship the pieces across the country to have them refurbished and refueled.
      All that extra handling actually turned out to be more expensive than building them new each time. And that was chosen because it is what the manufacturer talked NASA into because they knew that was the most profitable thing for them.
      And the manufacturers even had the cheek to convince NASA to have their political masters pass a law requiring all future launch vehicles of NASA to have solid boosters. That's why they are on SLS, because of that law.
      The contractors convinced NASA the solids were the cheapest option and congress was convinced of the same thing. The true costs of doing this only came out years later after they had started flying the shuttle. And re-engineering the boosters from that point on was going to be so expensive it wasn't worth it.
      Plus that pesky law requiring NASA to always use solids would have to be quietly wiped off the books. And that would have required both Congress and NASA to admit how badly duped they had been. That would have undermined the prestige of NASA and made the politicians who went along with it look pretty stupid.
      So everyone decided to just quietly press on and not say anything. Even after challenger no changes were made to using solids. The O rings were redesigned yes. But again, reengineering the solids to liquid fuel was so astronomically expensive it wasn't even considered.
      So again, no NASA couldn't have done this.

      This rocket will be able to deliver ~375 tons in orbit, or ~200 in if they recover the rocket.
      That's 10 to 20 times more than any other rocket.
      And the cost of a launch will be $2 to $5 million, compared to $100 to $150 million for a competing rocket.

    SpaceX (one of the US astronautics companies) employs approximately 13,000 people, while Roscosmos employs 150,000 people. So draw your own conclusions about where it is more effective. And who has achieved what results over the past 9-14 years.

    • @cogoid

      Without doubt! But to be fair, SpaceX is in the league of their own even compared to most of the Western aerospace companies. Boeing alone employs 170,000 people, and look at them!

      Roscosmos has a wide variety of space science divisions etc. while Space X has only rocket/ space ship division and those of a Starlink so not really comparable. But still, when compared to NASA which has "only" ~20k employers and has basically all the same divisions as roscosmos and does more, roscosmos is indeed very inneffective even before Russian invasion on Ukraine.

      Ok and? I was there and it’s not that bad. Of course people won’t want to be listening to it all the time so there will definitely be regulation as to how often these launches can occurs. it’s not had any effect on humans or wildlife and probably never will. But yes some tedious people like you won’t want to be hearing it so like I said there probably will be regulation for that.

    NASA has been in existence for almost 70 years and never came close or even tried to catch a booster. Then along comes Elon.
