Designed to melt at a known rate at a predictable temperature range. This complex catch is a further step to carry more weight into space at a cheaper cost. Reusable rockets without tons of heat shield and certain cooling systems are not used. Lower total weight carried at 17,500 MPH to escape the earths atmosphere with 3 times the power. Amazing!

Super Heavy is somewhere around 220 tons dry without the hot stage ring, and probably had 20-30 tons of propellant left in the tanks, so it definitely was not 500 tons. Also, when the booster reaches it's highest boostback velocity at about 26 kilometers altitude, it was doing 4400 km/h, which is a little over Mach 4 at that altitude. Then, when the engines fire to cancel out the booster's energy for the catch, it's doing Mach 1, and decelerates all the way down to 2 km/h by the time the chopsticks make contact.

Actually this is an old block1 booster, they have 1 more block1 to fly, after that they move to block2, it's been significantly redesigned in the front with the knowledge they've gained already, moving the flaps back and up to get them out of the direct plasma stream.
SpaceX wants more data though, it's not worth throwing an entire ship away just because they know the forward flaps have a problem, they'll just fly it and gather data on everything else.
Since the ship made a pinpoint landing this time they can perhaps recover it from the ocean floor like they did with the booster and get access to even more data.
