Thank you Chris for this review about a popular lens that I want to buy, but very difficult to find in Turkey. I say many reviews about this Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 lens on RUclips. Your review is amoung the best one's, as usual.
I finally got my copy yesterday with the ver. 2 firmware already installed in the lens. Having watched this review again, I can attest that Christopher is spot on in his assessment of this lens. It's a great normal zoom for either an a7iii or an a6500, etc.
I've got mine and I am very impressed with the sharpness. In comparison with my 2470GM I do not see why anyone would pay for the Sony other than small features physically on the Sony lens. I'm a pixel peeping freak. I love this new Tammy.
If you “peep” the CA aberration, it’s all over the place once you’re into the telephoto section, esp. in the corners. The center at 75mm shows you why lens designers cut the standard zoom off at 70mm, not 75mm. The way a lens performs on a crop camera shows you more about genuine optical quality than almost any other test, and the way it performed on the a5100 made every one of its compromises plainly evident. It’s OOF rendering probably wasn’t factored into its design at all, whereas the 24-70mm GM actually gives up a little sharpness for buttery smooth focus falloff and OOF performance. The GM is also significantly better corrected than the Tammy all around, and that 4mm difference at the wide end is absolutely massive compared to how insignificant it might look on paper. I don’t say any of this to bash the Tamron. It’s a huge hit-and it manages to trade this list of compromises in for an excellent price without failing at any one thing. However, to blow your load by claiming it lives up to “pixel peeping freak” standards, is not only completely wrong, but it misses the entire point of what Tamron has achieved at this price.
@Foto4Max I've never really understood this argument about build quality. Who throws around such expensive lenses? If u drop both from 3 feet, they'll both break, so I never understand why people pay so much emphasis to build quality.
I really enjoy your reviews man. Fantastic walkthroughs. Have you heard anything about a firmware update? My lens has a focus issue and still haven't heard anything.
Yeah, I sent them an email just now. Hopefully they will release it soon. But the lens is performing like a beast as long as I don't start the camera in video mode!
Thank you for this review. One thing puzzles me, though. Why is it that the same lens on APS-C will have softer corners than on full frame? I've seen this in other reviews with other lenses, and I don't get it. Shouldn't the crop sensor use the sweet spot of the lens? It can't be light incidence angle because the flange distance is the same. Maybe it's the pixel pitch? If so, then a full frame camera with the same megapixels will give sharper images every time and with smaller lenses with moderate aperture (f1.8). So if one is looking for the smallest kit with the highest quality and background separation, adding up the weight of camera bodies and lenses, regardless of cost, full frame might be better (at least with primes). Hmmm...
It depends how big the 'sweet spot' of the lens is. On some FF lenses it's only quite small and so the corners are still a little soft on APS-C - and also, a 24mp APS-C sensor is more demanding at a pixel level than a 42mp full-frame one
Your lens reviews are one of the most comprehensive I have ever come across, I hope you can do more reviews on Sony lenses, too bad you sold your Fuji, love your XF lens reviews too.
I have a 24mm lens and it's a fine optic used less than ten times in two decades - can live without a 24 - even live without 28. As someone who shoots a lot of portraits, I could live with a 35 to 90 range. I won't be selling my ancient Tamron 90mm lens just yet. Sharpness? I spend a lot of time putting various soft focus filters on for portraiture. More softness in post. You can't win when you build lenses. As for bokeh, I spend a lot of time shooting to try to include the context, and still soften it. A different philosophy to most but context is often vitally important and giving a customer a choice between a soft image and one that's tack sharp produces surprising choices at times from customers. Will buy this zoom though! I'd be happy with the zoom for lots of work. My two macros (60 & 90) often end up replacing normal prime lenses. Usage? - About 90% normal and 10% macro but that 10% macro takes shots that are indispensable. Five Star video. Thanks.
Thanks for this review Chris, I am still not completely sold on a non-native lens, but it’ll sure cost me alot less. Considering this one! Thanks again!
Thanks for your review of the lens. I've always enjoyed your reviews! I get the same results basically. And it is nice to know how it holds up at 42mp. that is impressive! The bokeh is ok. Not the best out there, but very usable. The macro or ability to shoot close is very, very useful. Together with the sony a7-3, they make an almost perfect pair. I love this combo.
Thanks Chris, very useful video. I hope you can do a review of the 28mm f2 Sony lens since l rather get one of those. Again thanks so much from Sydney 🇦🇺
Christopher, is it possible to know the dimensions of your test chart/photo mosaic? I have this lens and a standard chart. Going into the corners, the lens is quite soft and blurry (and a lot more around the right side). However, my chart is not big at all, so I test my lenses fairly close to it. When I make a picture from objects from a distance of around 1.5 mt or so, the corners are quite a lot better. So, I guess it has to do with some distortion that accentuates problems in the corners when the lens is close to the subject. For landscapes, the corners and sides are really sharp.
Hey young Christopher, would you say this lens is a massive improvement on the 28-70 sony kit at f8 and f11 which I've been quite pleased with. Thank you.
I was lucky enough to find one (1) in Japan, they were sold out everywhere! Been enjoying shooting with it immensely. Great value, and nice small size!
@@hevinxue2404 I have had no problems yet fortunately. I've only actively used it for about 2 weeks though (on vacation). Have you contacted the store where you bought it or Tamron? Maybe they can do something for you.
Shwmae Christopher. I've been thinking about this lens to go with a potential purchase of an A7 3. It's a far more sensible and affordable price than the G-Master for a Cardi like me. Bit of a mixed bag of comments below though. No hurry on my part and have the patience to wait until Spring 2019 if necessary for the mad frenzy of full frame launches to cool down a bit. Did I see Llangranog in that video? Diolch.
Llangrannog has quickly become my favourite shooting location :-) with my a7R II I love using little Samyang prime lenses (24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2.8) in conjunction with my Sony 85mm f/1.8. Lots of fun :-)
Great video like always I wonder which lens is sharper the sigma 24 f1.4 or the tamron 28 75 f2.8 keep up the good work brother thanks for making this videos
In the meantime Sigma 24-70f2.8 DG DN for Sony was released and available in stores, and definitely the Sigma because of the 4mm extra wide FOV is a better lens, but it costs almost double today in my country. The Sigma is bigger, too. So my conclusion was at the moment that the Tamron 2875 is a better performance/value lens, since when I really need wide angle I use my Canon TS-E 17mmf4, or the Sony 24f1.4GM. I love that the Tamron 2875 is so small, absolutely, its image quality is really great for the price. Honestly, this is not cheap lens at all, it is just less expensive than the brutally expensive Sony G/GM or Zeiss lenses. The Tamron 17-28f2.8 is more expensive, but it is an excellent complementer lens. These two Tamrons are an amazing kit for Sony shooters.
The difference between 28mm and the 24mm of the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm OSS f/4 lenses is significant for those who prefer more landscape and architectural photography. The f/2.8 is very good at 75mm for shallow depth of field and especially portraits. Also the f/2.8 is important for low light photography. The Sony Zeiss FE 24-70 f/4 OSS lens have image stabilization but since most of full frame e-mount cameras have image stabilization that OSS isn't important.
Hi Chris, been rewatching reviews as I'm thinking of getting a fullframe body, possibly the 6D2 as I have some Canon glass and don't really prefer the other manufactures cameras, mainly cause I've been with Canon for six years and their glass is cheaper and still hold up quality. If I tell you the 6D2 has dropped to under 1200usd in my place, is this a nice trade? It's still a large sum of cash, and with buying that, I would need to sell my backup 7D2 and some aps-c glass for a 16-35 and a 50 Art, as I currently only have a 24-105 for fullframe sensors. Should I be doing this, or am I just silly to not switch to another brand when this is the chance? By the way the 5D4 is under 2500 usd here. Don't really know why, but it is cheaper than everywhere else. Ain't got the bloody money to get it though.
The 6D II is great. Personally I think mirrorless cameras are the future though so I would wait. Bear in mind that there are major rumors going all around at the moment about Canon and Nikon developing their own full-frame mirrorless systems - I would definitely wait
Hello Chris, can you please do a video on Tamron 17-28 for Sony. I am looking to see if i can buy the Tamron or go for Sony 16-35 F4. Any suggestions please.
Great review! Could this be compared with the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 with an adaptor (no native mount for Sony on Sigma zooms) ? Besides of the lens quality itself, I wonder if the adaptor works 100%...
The word is that Sony who owns a controlling stake in the company is holding up production, to make their own lens, which is slated to come out near the holiday season.
Hello Christopher, i wanted to know what is your overall thought on the Sony A7RII as you have been using it recently, i'm curious to make the switch to the Sony full frame world from Canon and the A7RII meets my budget.
Hi Chris, I also watched your Sony FE 35 f/1.8 review. I own this lens and I was thinking about replacing this Tamron with 35mm to shave some weight off my kit, but it looks like Tamron 28-75mm performs better than 35mm. What are your thoughts? Edit: Thanks for the reviews.
Thats really impresive perfromance, I am glad AF works well, even eye AF. For 1/3 price of Sony lens, Tamron seems like an attractive option when I upgrade to Sony FF. Thanks for the review.
Great video. I was wondering that this lense doesn't have inbuilt image stabilisation but what I heard with the new Sony a7 iii comes in body stabilisation. My question is connecting this lense to the sony a7 iii will it make stabilisation?
On the topic of tamron lenses, have you considered testing the 28-300 vc pzd? It look like a great lens from the specs but a good test would be even more informative. If you do test iit I would be gratefull.
Is this the best lens of this range? What else could I try? I have a 30mm and 56mm sigma. Both 1.4... But thinking if I something with more options like this it could be better for my portrai photograpy.
Damn was not expecting Sigma to launch lighter (470g) 28-70 f/2.8 with smoother bokeh than Tamron. But both lens have close performance. Also Chris was quick to review it. Watching your review clears up lot of confusion.
@@tissoeh they’re both good, but the Sigma suffers loss of image quality at the long end at 70mm, while the Tamron excels. That to me is a deal breaker and I’m sticking with my Tamron 28-75
How about sharpness. Does the lens have enough resolution for 42Mpx? I want to buy a7r3. Is there really a noticeable increase in sharpness when switching to 42Mpx
google translate was not able to resolve this one I am afraid but I found the answer in wiktionary. thanks ;) P.S. Have you learnt how to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch yet?
For me it came up directly as 'Howdy'! I have visited that place before. The people who live there just call it Llanfair PG - if they can't be bothered to learn the whole name then neither can I ;-)
I have a Sony-Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar lens which I use on my Sony APSC cameras. Since I have just picked up a used Sony A7iii camera from eBay but have not received the camera yet, I think that I may need to buy this lens because I don;t know if the Vario-Tessar is sharp enough for the A7iii. I will try it on the full-frame camera when I get it, If it works fine, that will be O.K. However, if it doesn't suit my needs I can also resell this lens on eBay and add some extra money for the Tamron...
Hi Chris, Recently I purchased a Sony A7Riii with Sony 85mm f1.8. I wanna get one more lens but I'm really confused between a 35mm Samyang f1.4 and Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lenses. Which one should I get being a hobby photographer? I take mostly street, portraits and event photography!
The Tamron will be much more flexible with its zoom range, but the Samyang will get more striking (and sharper) images. Unless you really want flexibility I would personally go for the Samyang
To be honest I think the AF system of the A7 II will be the limiting factor. Even native glass doesn't provide good enough AF for action/dogs/kids, especially when they're running directly at you or similar. I mean you'll still get the occasional sharp picture but you'll have a *lot* of misfocused images.
I am using the old canon version of this lens with a commlite adapter on my a7iii and it works great..bought it for just 140 euros and it has a dedicated af mf button. have you compared the two?
For the APS-C, I see some youtube videos, people said it is not sharp at 18-105. But some said it is sharper. Do you know the reason why?? I wanna buy 28-75 but quite worry about this problem :( (is that the quality control for the product has some problem?)

Can you make a comparison vs Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM?
Hey Christopher...
We waiting for your review about tamron 28-200 Sony E mount
Please 🙏
Have you test the Tamron 28 - 75 with the Sony a7ii body?
Can you check what version your firmware is? I don’t see a firmware update from Tamron yet .... I have the original version first batch.
Is this test chart available somewhere? My 28-75 seems to have way worse corner performance.
Please suggest i want to buy new sony a7iii and I'm confused in lens which one to buy from these two.. Tamron 28-75 f2.8 or sony 24-105 f4
Simple really. If you want a lens with a brighter aperture the Tamron. If you want a better zoom range, the Sony
@@christopherfrost How does the image quality compare between the two? You have reviewed both lenses now, which would you prefer to use more often?
Is this the best lens of this range? What else could I try?
I have a 30mm and 56mm sigma. Both 1.4... But thinking if I something with more options like this it could be better for my portrai photograpy.
is it with image stabilizer?
As I said in the review, no
Please do the new Tamron 70-300 for Sony E mount thanks
Please review the Tamron 17-28!
Someone needs to make a native E mount 18-50/17-50 for the APS cameras like the A6300.
So what you mean by that is that I can't use an adapter for my Nikon with that?
70-180 is officially out. You need to review it for us!
Damn was not expecting Sigma to launch lighter (470g) 28-70 f/2.8 with smoother bokeh than Tamron. But both lens have close performance.
Also Chris was quick to review it. Watching your review clears up lot of confusion.
Which one do you think is better? The sigma or tamron
@@tissoeh they’re both good, but the Sigma suffers loss of image quality at the long end at 70mm, while the Tamron excels. That to me is a deal breaker and I’m sticking with my Tamron 28-75
I was deeply moved to see foxes book of martyrs in one of the demo shots. Thanks for this review.
No problem, God bless
Sigma 16 mm 1.4 pleaseeeee
Already own it and love it! Great for aps-c.
sigma 16mm 1.4 great for aps-c, but it heavy and big
It's actually pretty good. Much smaller than the new 85mm or 35mm.
Sigma 16mm 1.4 it’s a beautiful lens best len for Sony a6500
hey chris, can you review the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD please?
Eventually I will, yes
Hi,master,please make a review for the new lens~tamron 28-200 zoom lens,thanks a lot.
We want the new version please.
Which lens do you recommend for the Sony A7 III body? I want to make a kickboxing video.
This would be a start
How about sharpness. Does the lens have enough resolution for 42Mpx? I want to buy a7r3. Is there really a noticeable increase in sharpness when switching to 42Mpx
Why don't you watch the review, and find out!
what did you say at the beginning? some kind of welsh greeting?
'Shwmae'. Type it into Google translate to see what it means
google translate was not able to resolve this one I am afraid but I found the answer in wiktionary. thanks ;) P.S. Have you learnt how to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch yet?
For me it came up directly as 'Howdy'! I have visited that place before. The people who live there just call it Llanfair PG - if they can't be bothered to learn the whole name then neither can I ;-)
I'm a fan and look forward to watching any new video that you do. But I'm surprised when you get thumb's down, what is not to like? Strange people .
Christopher Frost Photography thanku for ur suggestion Chris
Where I can get the picture that you use to check lens?. Thanks in advance
I made it myself
Christopher Frost Photography could be excessive ask to share?.. viicentelongofernandez@gmail.com
Can you say something about the AF-C with the A7 II and this lens? Im interested if can handle running dogs and kids
Didn't get a chance to try it on dogs I'm afraid! It should be okay :-)
To be honest I think the AF system of the A7 II will be the limiting factor. Even native glass doesn't provide good enough AF for action/dogs/kids, especially when they're running directly at you or similar. I mean you'll still get the occasional sharp picture but you'll have a *lot* of misfocused images.
I am using the old canon version of this lens with a commlite adapter on my a7iii and it works great..bought it for just 140 euros and it has a dedicated af mf button. have you compared the two?
hkm5757 do you mean the canon 24-70 2.8L I. I’m considering buying it secondhand, but am debating between these two
no, i´m talking about the old tamron 28 75mm 2.8 for canon.
O would like to see a review of that lens in a croped Canon, like mine.
As I said right at the beginning of this review, this particular lens is only for Sony's mirrorless cameras
any idea if the AF is compatable with the A7s ii ?
For the APS-C, I see some youtube videos, people said it is not sharp at 18-105. But some said it is sharper. Do you know the reason why?? I wanna buy 28-75 but quite worry about this problem :( (is that the quality control for the product has some problem?)
Take a look at my reviews of those other lenses to see what I found :-)
Whats shimai palp? Is that like hello or something?
It's 'howdy' in Welsh
Christopher Frost Photography ooh! Nice!
A Tamron 15-28 f2.8 and 75-200 f2.8 for E-mount would be fine!!
Tamron 17 - 28 f2.8 comes in in a couple weeks. :)
I loov ☺
24-70 g2 tamron?
24mm? I think it was a typo at 0:50.
Anyway, thank you so much for this great review!
