I think it depends on the group of Mennonites. Where we grew up anyone could have their own Bible and not have to depend on the preacher's defining his only copy of the Bible. These Mennonites sound in some ways more like the Amish.

Amazing film. My ancestors came to America in the 18th Century. Mennonites, central PA - Lancaster, Mifflen counties. My brother and I have done alot of research on the Mennonites. We were Krieder at first (Kried - chalk and "er" - one who works with chalk." Kreider - "A chalkminer." I went to the area in '87 - nothing but chalk mines. My family, around the 1790's changed it to "Greider." We have been fasinated by the Mennonites when we started our research. So funny - we were raised as Catholics in Pittsburgh. If there are any Kreider or Greider, let me know. We want to continue to fill the "family tree."

It's always too strange to me when there are Christian communities that don't want their members to study the bible. You see it in some (not all, of course) Amish and Mennonite groups, they do not allow their members to read the bible unless they are leaders. I think that this is the main sign that certain group leaders have turned away from teaching God's will and started to prioritize their own position in the church.

So many of those people feel trapped because what isn’t portrayed here is that it isn’t easy to leave a Mennonite community. You either follow their rules or you will be shunned. Most of the time this means you loose all your friends and family. I know because I am one of the people in that community who chose to leave an abusive relationship and lost everyone in the process.

This is a good documentary 👍👏👏👏It is very interesting that I've heard the first time from the Mennonites through this documentary. And that the original source ,the birth of this Minnonit Religion started here in the North of Germany in Friesland and Dithmarschen. As one Mennonit was asked what Language they are talking ,he answered that they speack low german. That is a northgerman accent. It sounds like a mix language between english and dutch. The minnoites believe in the pure love and compassion without a church. These man minnoites are interpreting the original Minnoite Religion wrong.
Because it came out of the Luther evangelical Religion. And they are compassionate people who are accepting all Religions And would never forbid to mix with other races. Personally it was interesting to see, that I was born in that german area and my mother still spoke the law german ( plattdeutsch) Language which sounds like english. The area is called Friesland in Germany.Today we have a village in the middle of Germany in the Pfalz. Here still 40.000 Minnonites are living. They have their own church and people came from 40 different countrys to settled down around these villages in the Pfalz.
I can say that this people in Belize interpretated the minnoitish Religion wrong. The original minnoitic Religion believes in total Compassion and Empathy. They sadly changed it into their favour. Very interesting that I had to learn that this Religion came from the North from Germany and originally is a very loving and accepting Religion. Many people in the North of Germany still speak this Plattdeutsch Laguage and the people are very loving and strong. Most of them have their own farming ranches. And they are quit fearless and accepting people.I never knew why this northern germans from that area are so polite ,gentle and strong. I still have to figure that out and find the reason for it. This docomentary helped me to understand what influence the luther - evangangelic Religion and the Minnoitic Religion might have had on the people.

I found this documentary quite interesting and insightful..... on so many different levels. Religious..Societal..Political... of others I've never experienced or been taught.
I viewed some humble, simplistic and ethical mindset...that most positively benefits the world. Yet, the lack of education offered (in the name of religion and/or culture) results w/ignorance. Which is bereft and sadly non-encompassing.
I didn't find it "racist"; as so many commenters has posted w/their viewpoints. Rather, a mere product of which they were raised and expected to believe&follow. (Within both sides of the equation).

Their history is very fascinating as well as their culture. Quite an interesting group of people.

Minute 16: There are a lot of comments regarding the "N-word " and the fact, that they don't want to mix with other (black) people. I think this is not racism. I guess these people are just used only to marry people from their community of faith. In our region Catholics and Protestants did not mix for a very long time. And he is not aware about the meaning of the "N-word" outside his small world. We have similar words that are still a normal term for many people, but in historical context combined with policy the weight changed and it is not politically correct anymore to use them. People with a different background may be hurt.

The more conservative Mennonite groups are like the Amish in that regard. It may be theoretically possible to marry into the group but in practice it almost never happens - even without additional racial barriers. And even if it happens the people who join mostly come from similar background (Mennonites joining the Amish and vice versa).

We drive cars we are allowed phones lol and we dont have to wear such set back clothes either . I'm proud of being a mennonite and our history and unique language and our work ethic . But alot of things these traditional mennonites believe in are so extreme it's something they took from the Bible and made it extreme . I've had first hand experience those extreme rules are quite toxic at times

It's amazing the different groups that decide to go to unlikely places. I grew up in Hawaii and there's a big Mormon temple, I mean, most big and serious temple you'll ever find outside of Salt Lake City, and there's a big Mormon presence around that area, in la'ie. Well, I lived in Punalu'u and then Hau'ula so, towns right close by, and the Mormons wanted us to join them too but we weren't really interested. But I got to go inside the temple once, it's not normally open to "Gentiles" as Mormons call non-Mormons but there's a time like once every 100 years or something it has to be re-purified or something so it's, well, I don't want to say "unclean" but it's not completely holy until it's been re-purified so they can let "Gentiles" in so we got to see the inside of it. It's pretty nice in a churchy sort of way.

      John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
