Lots of Mennonites in Texas, I worked for one for 4 years driving OTR hauling produce for him, some of the hardest working people I ever met, and damn good mechanics.
I have a leather crafting business. My suppliers are Mennonites from Ohio. Such kind, decent people - it almost blows me away. I wish I could have a fraction of the serenity they live by.
Wonderful documentary, it touched so gently the lives of these different people. Their craftmanship is amazing, to think that they came from abroad and built so much in just a couple of generations is impressive.
I think it depends on the group of Mennonites. Where we grew up anyone could have their own Bible and not have to depend on the preacher's defining his only copy of the Bible. These Mennonites sound in some ways more like the Amish.
Amazing film. My ancestors came to America in the 18th Century. Mennonites, central PA - Lancaster, Mifflen counties. My brother and I have done alot of research on the Mennonites. We were Krieder at first (Kried - chalk and "er" - one who works with chalk." Kreider - "A chalkminer." I went to the area in '87 - nothing but chalk mines. My family, around the 1790's changed it to "Greider." We have been fasinated by the Mennonites when we started our research. So funny - we were raised as Catholics in Pittsburgh. If there are any Kreider or Greider, let me know. We want to continue to fill the "family tree."
It's always too strange to me when there are Christian communities that don't want their members to study the bible. You see it in some (not all, of course) Amish and Mennonite groups, they do not allow their members to read the bible unless they are leaders. I think that this is the main sign that certain group leaders have turned away from teaching God's will and started to prioritize their own position in the church.

for those who feel uncomfortable watching this video...as a belizean i can confirm that the man saying the n-word and saying that they dont marry black ppl, is alright with us belizeans. the n word have no effect on us black people here and many of us also dont consider dating them either. i have a black friend who is in a relationship with a mennonite man and had a baby, but he is no longer apart of that community. he felt trap in that community and i can see why. a mennonite guy also had a crush on me but i wasnt interested. i wouldnt mind dating a mennonite guy but i rather date one who isnt apart of that community. they are also great ppl from my perspective. the biker guys are cool, and they would normally ride their bikes with the locals as well. a few of them date outside there ethnicities and most of them arent trouble makers here in belize.
Watching these videos makes me want to visit Belize, I didn't know there was that much English in that country, I grew up in a Mennonite colony in Mexico but I live in Canada now for many years, still part of a Mennonite community but not as conservative as these people. Very cool to watch.
Some of these Mennonites seem to have learned English in Belize. They don't speak standard English, they speak British West Indian English, Belizean style.
Mennonites came from Holland, Germany then to Russia and from Russia Chortitz Colony came to Canada Molotschna went to the USA , from Canada which is probably where they learnt English, some went to Mexico Paraguay etc
So many of those people feel trapped because what isn’t portrayed here is that it isn’t easy to leave a Mennonite community. You either follow their rules or you will be shunned. This is a good documentary 👍👏👏👏It is very interesting that I've heard the first time from the Mennonites through this documentary. And that the original source ,the birth of this Minnonit Religion started here in the North of Germany in Friesland and Dithmarschen. As one Mennonit was asked what Language they are talking ,he answered that they speack low german. That is a northgerman accent. It sounds like a mix language between english and dutch. The minnoites believe in the pure love and compassion without a church. These man minnoites are interpreting the original Minnoite Religion wrong. Because it came out of the Luther evangelical Religion. And they are compassionate people who are accepting all Religions And would never forbid to mix with other races. Personally it was interesting to see, that I was born in that german area and my mother still spoke the law german ( plattdeutsch) Language which sounds like english. The area is called Friesland in Germany.Today we have a village in the middle of Germany in the Pfalz. Here still 40.000 Minnonites are living. They have their own church and people came from 40 different countrys to settled down around these villages in the Pfalz. I can say that this people in Belize interpretated the minnoitish Religion wrong. The original minnoitic Religion believes in total Compassion and Empathy. They sadly changed it into their favour. Very interesting that I had to learn that this Religion came from the North from Germany and originally is a very loving and accepting Religion. Many people in the North of Germany still speak this Plattdeutsch Laguage and the people are very loving and strong. Most of them have their own farming ranches. And they are quit fearless and accepting people.I never knew why this northern germans from that area are so polite ,gentle and strong. I still have to figure that out and find the reason for it. I remember going into Spanish Lookout and seeing a Mennonite boy on a four wheeler riding a wheelie down the main road and it was so unexpected especially since you don't see quads anywhere else in Belize hardly.
I had a tiny glimpse of Mennonites when vacationing in Belize several years ago. Thank you for this documentary. It helps me understand them. Great people! ❣
Belize Mennomite are changing vastly, especially the younger generation that I admire a lot . I have wonderful mennonites friends that been in my house and I in theirs, it’s about trust, respect, hard work and honesty. I never jealous nor envy them. They would always treat me as one of their family, and I am a black Belizean/ British female.
I'm glad to hear this. I was surprised by the man who said that Garifuna cannot become Mennonite. That is not the case. I'm glad the younger generation is working to overcome this bigotry.
I enjoyed this documentary very much and learned a lot. I hope for those groups who have embraced a bit more of modernity, especially their younger members, be mindful of striking the right balance to avoid any influence from the world they have tried to escape by living so remotely (too much video games, entertainment, idleness, association with non-believers, etc.) The changes usually happen slowly, and pretty soon you have the same problems the rest of the world has.
The most wise thing I heard was the church owning the title to all property. If one starts selling, it doesn’t take long for the community to be broken up.
Humankind has to follow Mennonites lifestyle. Small peaceful communities. Having own nurse, teachers, no police. They can catch criminal by themselves communicating through phones. Belize has no much hypocrisy and not forcing people to live stupid rules. Pay taxes and live free life.
Love the young man speaking up for himself regarding Christianity, the bible and leadership. Good father allowing him to study and question things. Interesting documentary. Love the pastor having a broader look on things.
I found this documentary quite interesting and insightful..... on so many different levels. Religious..Societal..Political... of others I've never experienced or been taught. I viewed some humble, simplistic and ethical mindset...that most positively benefits the world. Yet, the lack of education offered (in the name of religion and/or culture) results w/ignorance. Which is bereft and sadly non-encompassing. I didn't find it "racist"; as so many commenters has posted w/their viewpoints. Rather, a mere product of which they were raised and expected to believe&follow. (Within both sides of the equation). Education brings Knowledge~Knowledge brings Balance~ Balance brings Acceptance. Thank you Brent Toombs for uploading this doc........ Great Stuff!
I wish all you people nothing but the best it is so beautiful to see everybody getting along not to say you don't have your problems but it's beautiful to just see the culture like that but there was still a place likeThat left in the world
I've lived in Belize all my life. Even though I was well aware of the mennonites as group, I only really knew them as those white people who dressed funny that came to our village every now and again to sell furniture. Their history is very fascinating as well as their culture. Quite an interesting group of people.
Minute 16: There are a lot of comments regarding the "N-word " and the fact, that they don't want to mix with other (black) people. I think this is not racism. I guess these people are just used only to marry people from their community of faith. In our region Catholics and Protestants did not mix for a very long time. And he is not aware about the meaning of the "N-word" outside his small world. We have similar words that are still a normal term for many people, but in historical context combined with policy the weight changed and it is not politically correct anymore to use them. People with a different background may be hurt.
The more conservative Mennonite groups are like the Amish in that regard. It may be theoretically possible to marry into the group but in practice it almost never happens - even without additional racial barriers. And even if it happens the people who join mostly come from similar background (Mennonites joining the Amish and vice versa).
so think use the n word a lot an how is there so many mexicans but no blacks mexican are no where near white there skin color is much closer to black i dont get it lol. mexican are not white yet they seem to mixing with with white
I'm actually a mennonite too . I'm here to say not all mennonites are this set back anymore alot of us are evolved . We drive cars we are allowed phones lol and we dont have to wear such set back clothes either . I'm proud of being a mennonite and our history and unique language and our work ethic . But alot of things these traditional mennonites believe in are so extreme it's something they took from the Bible and made it extreme . I've had first hand experience those extreme rules are quite toxic at times
I met your folks there in Belize , I liked them I was there on a field trip to study the Garifuna. To see the interaction of the two communities was fascinating.
Hearing the people's life stories and seeing what their lives are like was interesting. Hearing the interviewer grill each one to see if they met his values on racism, or trying to pit the various sects against each other, not so much.
one person that spoke was David Dyck i have a brother bt that name .Belize looks like a very nice country. im also a mennonite in Canada.we have one very important thing in common thats our love for the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
THe Mennonites have beautiful farms and without them Belize wou,Belize d not only be much poorer as it was in the past...they feed the cost ryWhe. Zi cruised there in the latr 90s fold was imlorted..mostly from England and hugely expensive salad cream etc. Now so much is available thanks to,the Mennonites. Everyone benefits from their presence !
I have watched many, many docs on groups such as this. Amish, Hutterite and Mennonite. The biggest difference from a outsiders perspective. With the Mennonites…. The children smile and laugh. The women look happy. The men are soft spoken and smile fir the camera. You cannot say this about the dour Amish and Hutterites.
You should look up Giselle Waldner on RUclips. She is a Hutterite from Manitoba who shares about her life as a Hutterite. She is a joyful, happy young woman. I think it varies from colony to colony.
Mennonites seem gentle satisfied hard working people. If they're happy can't see any harm. Certainly they have strict views. The people that aren't happy can always leave. I do like the interviewer he's very understanding and has a nice way about himself.
Too bad the interviewer was so bad. He bordered on rude with some of his questions. His style tended to put people on the defensive. A good interviewer makes the person they interview feel comfortable-this guy does the opposite. Too bad.
He asked the question, they don't have individuality.it is the same as asking an italian or chinese, we all have our qualities our choices on how we want to live!
Definetly agree ,the way they dress is part of their cultural heritage ,identity and collectivism ,when he asked why they all looked the same ,it sat realy wierd with me ,not sure why someone would question a secluded settlement of peoples identity in the way he did ,seems as tho he has issue with people having a collected beliefe and identity .
It's amazing the different groups that decide to go to unlikely places. I grew up in Hawaii and there's a big Mormon temple, I mean, most big and serious temple you'll ever find outside of Salt Lake City, and there's a big Mormon presence around that area, in la'ie. Well, I lived in Punalu'u and then Hau'ula so, towns right close by, and the Mormons wanted us to join them too but we weren't really interested. But I got to go inside the temple once, it's not normally open to "Gentiles" as Mormons call non-Mormons but there's a time like once every 100 years or something it has to be re-purified or something so it's, well, I don't want to say "unclean" but it's not completely holy until it's been re-purified so they can let "Gentiles" in so we got to see the inside of it. It's pretty nice in a churchy sort of way.
51:18 Cannot see those kids going back to horses and buggies. The quad races are a blast. 51:55 hot pink t Shirt looks great: I doubt she will wear home made cotton dresses.
Our salvation is through the Lord Jesus ! That says it all ! The traditional Mennonite’s are being led astray, so sad 😞 xxx To actually believe you can ‘shun’ a person, and that person is eternally damned, THAT is not in the bible !!
Reread it. 1 Timothy 1:20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Mark 8:33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
How can you have a group of people become Belizeans and not have them serve in the military, they keep to themselves they don't mingle with Belizeans unless if you come to buy whatever they are selling.
This has been one of the most fascinating documentaries I've ever seen. The various opinions were so interesting to hear. The younger generation on quad bikes speaking so proudly of their heritage made me smile. Thanks for sharing what must have taken ages to record and edit. :)

If that is there lifestyle and they are happy more power to them. They have made a great contribution to the development of Belize.
Where do you live?
I enjoyed this documentary very much and learned a lot. I hope for those groups who have embraced a bit more of modernity, especially their younger members, be mindful of striking the right balance to avoid any influence from the world they have tried to escape by living so remotely (too much video games, entertainment, idleness, association with non-believers, etc.) The changes usually happen slowly, and pretty soon you have the same problems the rest of the world has.
Singing is music too.
How is getting shares in his Uncles company starting from nothing?
The most wise thing I heard was the church owning the title to all property. If one starts selling, it doesn’t take long for the community to be broken up.
Nice documentary. I live in Belize
belize
Kenny Morgan, 3 minutes in, a very wise man speaks. Excellent video!!
WOW! Thank goodness for the doctor and his beliefs!
Tysm!! He's my grandpa and he actually passed away in 2018, all these comments about him are amazing🥺
Humankind has to follow Mennonites lifestyle. Small peaceful communities. Having own nurse, teachers, no police. They can catch criminal by themselves communicating through phones. Belize has no much hypocrisy and not forcing people to live stupid rules. Pay taxes and live free life.
Julia K ...like small minded racists.
They seem to be hard-working people. God bless them. PEACE!
Love the young man speaking up for himself regarding Christianity, the bible and leadership. Good father allowing him to study and question things. Interesting documentary. Love the pastor having a broader look on things.
People were speaking very softly in places and I couldn't make out what they were saying. I think subtitles were sometimes needed.
watch the fifth estate on the Mennonites drug connection you'll think differently about these people, no man is without sin.
Well they should definitely edit out the part if the video where they claim they are perfect without sin then hey?
A very interesting video. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Thank you for sharing. Better tell that girl at the end to get a helmet on.
Its crazy to see videos of my younger grandparents and uncles on RUclips.....I did not expect to find this.
Separatist doesn’t mean racist
Then they can go live separately in northern Norway
God Bless these Great Folks!
Great people who are full of racism? Wonder what God thinks about that?
Its really interesting. Thank you for this documentary it gives us great insights.
I love David's and his sons and the God fearing people
Dave is the doc right? Yea i found them very sympathic.
I enjoyed this documentary. You didn't just get one group of Mennonite. This shows that their way of life evolved.
I wish all you people nothing but the best it is so beautiful to see everybody getting along not to say you don't have your problems but it's beautiful to just see the culture like that but there was still a place likeThat left in the world
This is absolute gold! Thank you for this film!
Informative, but the choice of music was very poor.
Its wonderful that there is open minnonites congragations or colonies. That are open arms and. welcome all.
it is a very intrusting religion and sure different. But its very simple. which I say is so awsome. And I like simple.
they seem to be hard working people i like them, i like the way the still preserve their nationality mexicans, canadians but they all as one velizean
If you spent one week there... you would see them a little different
Big Yorg86 true that
when I was A kid my grandmother took me to shipyard at the dentist
I've lived in Belize all my life. Even though I was well aware of the mennonites as group, I only really knew them as those white people who dressed funny that came to our village every now and again to sell furniture. Their history is very fascinating as well as their culture. Quite an interesting group of people.
LopezLion they are drug traffickers in Mexico !!!
@@monikapadilla3949 stop spreading lies.
Esoteric Truth ת ruclips.net/video/vWPCJC7JqRI/видео.html Watch this documentary about the Mexican Mennonite drug cartel. It is real unfortunately.
Seriously? Wow, who would've thought 🤔🤔🤔
Dilia Ortiz I know, it’s surreal!
Gundula M. Also it would be like asking where are the black or hispanic hassidic Jews, or black Russian orthodox Old Believers. It's just nonsensical.
The more conservative Mennonite groups are like the Amish in that regard. It may be theoretically possible to marry into the group but in practice it almost never happens - even without additional racial barriers. And even if it happens the people who join mostly come from similar background (Mennonites joining the Amish and vice versa).
Having been there I completely agree with you.
so think use the n word a lot an how is there so many mexicans but no blacks mexican are no where near white there skin color is much closer to black i dont get it lol. mexican are not white yet they seem to mixing with with white
Stop taking up for Des racist piece of 💩 he is from Canada he understands the vast world
I love how they believe in JESUS they want to study the bible and love others❤
Only the parts that can be twisted to suit their racism and bigotry. Got to love that 4 eyed tub of lard.
These people are brilliant!
I met your folks there in Belize , I liked them
I was there on a field trip to study the Garifuna. To see the interaction of the two communities was fascinating.
Agreed. My family is also Mennonite. I have family in Spanish Lookout. But my family here in Canada is completely modern.
Very interesting! Well-done!
Beautiful! Thank you! :)
Those ATV stunts though. Hospitalization waiting to happen.
Indeed.
4himsanctified Yes, I was noticing that also! That girl was asking for it standing up; they needed helmets also!
Hearing the people's life stories and seeing what their lives are like was interesting. Hearing the interviewer grill each one to see if they met his values on racism, or trying to pit the various sects against each other, not so much.
I’m not sure he was trying to do that. He was just wanting to know the differences.
@@awakenedheartroom not so ,he deffinetly had a agenda ,it was pretty clear to see from the start .
one person that spoke was David Dyck i have a brother bt that name .Belize looks like a very nice country. im also a mennonite in Canada.we have one very important thing in common thats our love for the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
The documentary is good and well put together, the music makes it seem totally amateurish.
There are so many positive and negative aspects of this society.
Fascinating people 😅 have a great life bless your hearts 😊
At 16:40 did he ask like the Niggas? I replayed it several times and that's what I heard...or am the only one?
Yes he did.
was looking for this comment lol
They're racist settler scum
I have watched many, many docs on groups such as this. Amish, Hutterite and Mennonite. The biggest difference from a outsiders perspective. With the Mennonites…. The children smile and laugh. The women look happy. The men are soft spoken and smile fir the camera. You cannot say this about the dour Amish and Hutterites.
You should look up Giselle Waldner on RUclips. She is a Hutterite from Manitoba who shares about her life as a Hutterite. She is a joyful, happy young woman. I think it varies from colony to colony.
I have watched this so many times.
What beautiful people. Kind, optimistic, helping one another, happy, smiling. Wonderful documentary. God bless.
Go back to Germany and
Mennonites seem gentle satisfied hard working people.
If they're happy can't see any harm. Certainly they have strict views. The people that aren't happy can always leave.
I do like the interviewer he's very understanding and has a nice way about himself.
Soooo, let's excuse or ignore their racism, hunh? Godly with racism in the hearts? Not possible!!!!
Too bad the interviewer was so bad. He bordered on rude with some of his questions. His style tended to put people on the defensive. A good interviewer makes the person they interview feel comfortable-this guy does the opposite. Too bad.
Send Howard Stern lol he'd get them talking 😄
Agreed, my first thought is he was making them seem awkward and not normal with his questions.
He almost seemed to show disdain for some of their beliefs.
Not cool.
His obsession with making sure they were paying taxes when in fact they are giving more to their community and surrounding area than they are getting.
I also agree. It doesn't sound so well.
It's pretty nice in a churchy sort of way.
zeer schone film, sorry ik spreek alleen hollands .dank.
we only know what they want us to know - Women Talking: addresses a whole other side
51:18 Cannot see those kids going back to horses and buggies. The quad races are a blast. 51:55 hot pink t Shirt looks great: I doubt she will wear home made cotton dresses.
BEAUTIFUL AND AWESOME.

@@yoban360 it's their choice in their own country. most japanese don't like marrying other ethnic groups either.
I admire these people. outstanding information
The kindly Doctor and his family think and behave in a far more Christian manner than the rigid exclusionary racist types.
50:45 I really like how this boy answers every question. Smart kid.
Our salvation is through the Lord Jesus ! That says it all ! The traditional Mennonite’s are being led astray, so sad 😞 xxx To actually believe you can ‘shun’ a person, and that person is eternally damned, THAT is not in the bible !!
Reread it.
1 Timothy 1:20
Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.
John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Mark 8:33
But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
How can you have a group of people become Belizeans and not have them serve in the military, they keep to themselves they don't mingle with Belizeans unless if you come to buy whatever they are selling.
I thought the interviewer did a brilliant and sensitive job!
No doubt one of the best videos of this type I have ever seen. Great work. Many thanks.
The Mennonites have made wonderful contributions to Belize...GOOD people!
Yeah, like RACISM.
They have made great contributions...to their own pockets
