  • SM Magnetics had the honor of interviewing with Dr. Patrick Rice who is a Senior Marine Biologist at Shark Defense. Dr. Rice educates us on his early research and studies with permanent magnets for the use of Shark Defense. He explains the technical aspects of a shark and how the magnet interacts. Very cool discovery! Lastly, he shares some new product development on the market today. Enjoy the video and as always share with your friends.

I've actually been thinking of buying some new tiny magnets. I want to do some acoustic experiments. I play harmonica, which is a free reed instrument (one end is attached, the other isn't, works by flexing) but I want to do an experiment with stiff reed with both a single and double end attachment and a stiff reed. Thinking really small spring magnets. Still in the planning stages though.

I am astounded that anyone told you to stop. It's been common knowledge for years that the reason sharks accidentally come off their target and do that weird thing where they "attack" the boat due to the magnetic field of the hull, and you also mentioned the sharks gnawing on undersea powered cables with magnetic (due to the electric field) fields. The idea of a personal worn magnet (put them in the fins, and have them double as a clip!) to dissuade a shark from biting clearly follows from that.
    Awesome work!
