- There are tons of ergonomics-focused office products out there, many of which cater to the prevention of wrist and hand ailments like carpal tunnel syndrome. The Kinesis Advantage Pro keyboard might be one of the most extreme redesigns of your run-of-the-mill keyboard.
But those with typing-heavy jobs such as Business Insider's principal engineer Kip Demane love the health benefit along with the increased productivity the unconventional key layout delivers.

I like how the guy in the background is pretending to think.
Probably just reading through his morning emails, wondering what half of any of that BS has to do with him to begin with.
💀😂😂
why was dvorak not used for background music?
I have this keyboard, took me a while to get used to it, I love it now! Waiting for the new Kinesis 360 that's coming out soon. They have improved the build quality, added USB-C ports, bluetooth support, improved the function keys and some other keys, in the upcoming 360 model.
I use to type un Dvorak for years and had to change back to qwerty cause just about every programs have their hotkey layout optimized for qwerty. In the end Dvorak isn't any better than Qwerty since with Vim I have a huuuge lists of abbreviations that auto complete my sentences anyways.
Personally, I use Colemak which is just as good as Dvorak if not better as tries to maintain the standard layout for common shortcuts (c-z, c-x, c-v...)
@@lucianafruin1667 I use Dvorak and using Autohotkey, I temporarily swapped some shortcut keys:
Code:
;; Cut
I mean, it’s gotta be good since Mike Shinoda himself recommends it
I thought this was made specifically for programming...would have made my LuaVM and command project which is 1200+ lines much easier
Outputs QWERTY when in Dvorak? Wrong. VERY simply, keys are switches on key matrix. When a key contact is made, the matrix position is seen by the KB controller. Controller interprets what Ascii key-code corresponds to the key's matrix position and sends the corresponding data out the serial bus interface; USB, PS2, DB9 to an IO controller in the comp and OS/driver knows codepage to use . This keyboard allows you to remap the switch matrix on the keyboard that KB controller interprets so the driver/OS doesn't have to waste cycles.
If you typed qwerty in this keyboard the outcome would be qwerty. If you typed dvorak the outcome would be dvorak.
He's using Emacs!!
What's Tai Lopez doing programming?
he learned it in 2 hours from some books in his garage
KNAWLEGGGE!
so ive been using vim and when i tried to switch to the dvorak layout its hard especially the movement keys so is there an alternative? btw i uses vsc and with the vim mod :)
Colemak, Workman
I'm in the same boat. I just got used to the new locations of hjkl
How do you reach the escape and function keys?
Late, but....
When I used a predecessor to this model, I remapped the esc key to caps lock ( which is something this keyboard excels at, you can do it entirely in the keyboard itself ).
The function keys were always a pain point, but at that time they were also this rubber membrane thing. Apparently more recent models switched to mechanical keys up there, so that might help.
Is that the 3DS menu music in the background?
the guy on his left disagrees
Thanks for mentioning this very useful product. I've been using the Kinesis keyboard with the same key layout as yours for over a decade. Being a Dvorak typist why didn't you get the version with Dvorak letters embossed on the keys? Also, the special symbols are placed differently than the conventional Dvorak layout. You didn't mention that the Kinesis keyboard is programmable, an extremely useful feature. You might have mentioned that the origin of the QWERTY layout was to frustrate typing efficiency by requiring the typist to exercise additional effort. The Dvorak system corrects this.
My generation rn it awesome
I really consider to buy this if it's really worth it. But it will be very expensive because of the import fee. I'm still trying to save money for this keyboard.
it translates dvorak keys into qwerty keys? what does that even mean, isnt dvorak just a diffrent layout
I believe what he means is that you don't have to change the layout on the computer. You type on the keyboard in dvorak, but the keyboard will translate into qwerty for the computer to read.
When I first read the title I thought it said "uncomfortable keyboard"
But does he use a mouse or trackball? That's where most of the daily peripheral action happens
power-programmers won't need one, they rarely use a pointing device. I don't feel like one though, but I do agree it's way better to make the best out of the keyboard and avoid slow mouse interactions.
I use a vertical mouse, did a review on it too
But how can I power my way through Facebook and RUclips for 3-4 hours per work day?
Vim :D
Try out Qutebrowser. Vim keybindings to navigate the interwebs ... all that power!!
This dude sounds like he could be IcePoseidon's older brother...
Cx in the chat
I want to try it but just looking at the keyboard makes it look uncomfortable.
It is very comfortable. I own 3.
@@Taz_Brown_Coaching that's scarily impressive. You could probably take over the world with those.
The only problem with this keyboard is the price. It's not worth just under $400 but that's still how much they charge. Objectively shouldn't be more than $150
HI THERE saving 400usd to get useless hands doesn't sound like a good deal either
dodekaedius
Is using gaming keyboard or normal keyboard for programming really is unhealthy is it that bad or is it just a business scam
Ko- Jap Its actually bad in the long run. But if your hands arent angled to an extreme extent, its not THAT bad
Price will be inflated because the general public won't need them, hence less sales.
@@ko-Daegu Yes it is bad. 20 years of programming on a straight keyboard and my wrists where killing me for the last year of that - and affected my ability to do my work. Some people are lucky and never experience wrist issues typing. My wrists and shoulders are now super sensitive to any strain I put on them. 2 years ago I switched to the Ergodox EZ keyboard for home and work. It's expensive (not quite as much as the Kinesis), but it also means I can continue working. So paying $300-$400 for a keyboard that allows me to continue my career is easy to justify. The Ergodox is fully programmable, so I designed a custom Dvorak based layout where I bring the keys to my home cluster (3x3 keys around the middle fingers). I never use the top row any more. So much better. :-)
Here is my Ergodox layout: configure.ergodox-ez.com/ergodox-ez/layouts/PByKZ/latest/0
in context of programing - just lol at those f1-f12 keys.
I don't understand what have F keys have to do with programming?
@@markokorevec3198 F-keys are default shortcuts in almost any editor/ide. Forgetting and relearning something that is already in muscle memory just to use "power-programmer" keyboard is a hard sell.
@@moofymoo They are barely used in Vim/Emacs and the only combination I remember is F5 to refresh/start. However, keep in mind macs don't have F keys, and guy in the video is using a mac!
Can't be, macs have F-keys, mine did!
This one have f13-f16 - upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Apple_Pro_Keyboard_(open_top).jpg
This thing costs almost 400$. Any cheaper alternatives ?
Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard 4000 is less than $50
He has the pro version, on the company's website there is one called Advantage that is build in the same ergonomic way, just doesn't have as much software stuff. The Advantage is $299, while that is still expensive, it is a little bit cheaper than the Advantage Pro.
If you use it fulltime for just a year, that's only 20 cents an hour even if you buy it at the full new price. Well worth it IMHO! I recommend looking on craigslist as well, I scored an Advantage 2 and an Advantage 2 LF for $120 and $140, respectively. I think I got lucky. There are also often Advantage 1s on ebay selling for somewhere between $100 and $200
This is where DIY is cheaper and customize the hell out of it too.
Dactyl manuform
No arrow keys?
There are... two on the left hand and two on the right hand - bottom row of the keyboard. It is a very weird layout, but people I have spoken too, say you get used to it fairly quickly.
Idk, I think low profile is better for me. Its a pleasure to use low profile, like on a MacBookPro
His hands are still pointing a bit up, that's not optimal. You should lift your arms when typing not rest the palms....
"power-programmers"
oh the cringe...
The correct term would be "power user." Goes to show that Business Insider is clueless about the subject matter.
What about the mouse
if you get good at using keyboard shortcuts you rarley have to use your mouse at all when Programming.
I checked out the Amazon feedback for this keyboard and you should really check out the negatives before seriously considering this. If it had a more mechanical feedback with superior quality materials used, I would probably be all over this. When it comes to my work environment, I spare no expense. I will keep using my Razer gaming keyboard...
+Slight Beyond Sight lmao your talking about quality mechanical keys, but you still use a razer keyboard.
Lol! The quality is awesome, I don't know what reviews you are reading. I particularly like the Advantage 2 LF (cherry reds) instead of the plain Advantage 2 (cherry browns)
WAIT you think razer is good quality
B vitamins. Steel rods? No way
People still think that programming is all about typing.
For power users it pretty much is. Look at vim, qutebrowser/vimium, emacs, tiling window managers, etc. It's all keyboard macros; they hardly ever use the mouse
Power-user here. I was trying to say that "power-programmer" is a made-up term, as programming requires more time on thinking/planning rather than running your fingers on the keyboard.
That One User IntelliJ fanatic here, and I disagree with this. Some power users it is all about typing. For me I am doing a large amount with the mouse to leverage the full range of the UI, although I’m sure there are a lot of keyboard shortcuts that would reduce this for me.
Not to mention that many days it seems half my job is navigating our task priorities, communicating with other team members, trying to find that one related ticket which could shine a light on my current goals, etc.
End of world datahand from magic years Fat 45
yes... very critical that 2 people can type on the same computer at the same time....
Farzher Pair programming is totally a thing. And pair writing is becoming more popular. True, I wouldn't want to be the one typing on the laptop if it was on a stand like that.
bookofdaveandsteve Can I write on 2 places at once if I use 2 keyboards?
No everything you write would go to the same place.
In pair programming only ne person types and the other person types and the other says what he wants to be done and after a while you switch places it is meant to improve qualtiy and really can be helpful because you have two people thinking about how to solve the same problem.
White theme!
After try out the game true microTron won other ho ho god today bbc
if i can't game on it's shit
qwerty layout :D
The fact that he uses a blindingly white editor tells me he doesn't REALLY care about ergonomics.
ergo dox
thank me later
keyboardio ;)
that price is totally unjustifiable
If you use it fulltime for just a year, that's only 20 cents an hour even if you buy it at the full new price. Well worth it IMHO! If you don’t think investing in making something you spend a huge portion of
Your time on more comfortable. Get checked.
I would pay $400 to avoid carpel tunnel
no its not
This is the worst keyboard that I've ever seen
Ergodox is better
