Most artists would put out a generic pop song for a commercial movie, but not Prince. He just went and put out an experimental jam as the lead single. The guy had some balls!

What is interesting about this song and video is all the things Prince is doing from playing the guitar and keyboards,he also is the DJ"mixing" sample note Sir Mix Alot sampled this song for they 1989 hit Beepers.

I love how different of a song this is for Prince, it's so chaotic with all those samples. I think Prince was trying to do the whole good vs. evil thing like on Lovesexy and used Batman and Joker to represent that. The repeated sampling of "I'm gonna kill you" and "I'm not going to kill you" could represent Batman's internal conflict over breaking his one rule (maybe I'm reading too much into it though).

    • @Dirtcake71
      @Dirtcake71 3 года назад +1

That's the same thing I was thinking! Also with the saying of Power when he talks of killing and Soul when he says he's not going to kill reflects that turmoil as well. At least, that's what I think.

It printed the 1st Batman movie. He refused to add in any footage from the movie as was the standard. Except a little bit of Jack Nicholson voice. The STUDIO got mad and made a big deal about it, but remember no Internet back then, so to have a single playing all day all night all week, saying Batman over and over - the movie was coming out in one week- it was killer.

When we would listen to this as kids, we would also wonder if he was saying Funk or Fu*k. If you listen to it with funk in mind it will sound like funk. If you think of the other word, it would sound like that. I think it was his slick way of cursing on radio by writing the lyric as funk.

@@frankbrown4513 💋🍒💋We knew, but to get it on the airwaves Prince came up with a very clever maneuver. On the copyright, he didn’t write the real word, he put “ funk “ instead, lol.
I read back then a DJ at a roller rink put ‘ Erotic City ‘ on and the manager came running from his office and turned it off. He was pissed off and so were the people there, because he turned it off. The DJ new in advance how his boss would react so before he did it he got a copy of the song under the copyright. When his boss read the word ‘ funk ‘, instead of the actual word ‘ fu#k ‘ he let the DJ play it, lol.
In another case, at an all girl boarding school they had a jukebox that they would put the latest songs on. One girl snuck the record ‘ Erotic City ‘ into the playlist. It had been on there for over a year, then one day a student walked around the corner and saw one of the sisters at the parochial school standing in front of the jukebox carefully listening to the song over and over again. Busted! They got away with it for a whole year at least, lol.💋🍒💋

@@frankbrown4513 💋🍒💋As far as I can remember that was the first time the “ F bomb “ got played on the radio.
Years later after Prince became a Jehovah witness he said he was blaming himself for all the profanity that was existing in songs today. I love all of Prince’s songs including the raunchy ones, because with Prince it wasn’t just about being provocative...well maybe except for the song ‘ Sister ‘. Not to crazy about that one, but it did fit in with the ‘ Dirty Mind ‘ album.💋🍒💋

The soundtrack for this movie was originally supposed to be done has a collaboration between Prince and Michael Jackson (Prince as the villain and Michael as Batman). Prince visited the movie set one day and came up with the idea of this song.
In the video, there's Batman, the Joker and Gemini (the twin, which is Prince zodiac sign. Get it?)
The song is filled with quotes from the movie (I'll just list my favorites):
    JOKER
"Oh, I got a live one here!" (laughter)
"Go, go, go with a smile!"
    "And where is the Batman?"
"Well, Miss Vale, ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight? I always ask that of ALL my prey. I just like the sound of it." (Fake gunshot followed by Vicki's screams.)
    "This town needs an enema."
"Have you ever heard of the healing power of laughter?"
    BRUCE WAYNE
"Stop the press! Who is that?"
"Hi, Bruce Wayne. I've tried to avoid all of this, but I can't."

You have to watch the Batman movie it is based on. A lot of the lines in the music video were actually lines from the movie itself. Then you'll understand what was going in the video lol. It's the 1989 Batman movie directed by Tim Burton. I recommend you react to that movie.
