I have always used circle hooks for halibut but didn't think the sturgeons mouth worked as well with them. You have found them to work as well as J hooks ???
You fish the wilamette river trying to get some people that would like to sturgeon at one of my good spots lots of big fish it's by the sellwood bridge
2:20 - 2:33 So let me get this straight, Kevin. You use 130 lb test braided leader on a 50 - 65 lb test main? How does that make any sense unless your objective is to lose all your gear? Am I missing something? I've never ever ever heard of anybody using a higher strength leader than the main for any kind of fishing. What is the advantage? I can't see any.
The sturgeon has sharp blades up and down its body. When they roll the blades can dig into the leader, so having a heady leader help take the extra damage. If you used 130 lbs test as your main line you wouldnt have as long of line spool as you might want when a sturgeon goes for a long run.
Richard Waters OOOOoooh. Interesting. Thanks for the just-in-time reply. I'm about to pop my sturgeon cherry on the Fraser River in a couple weeks. Can't wait! I can't see these guides using 65 pound test though, as 500 pound fish aren't uncommon (they landed a 1000 pounder last season!).

watched this video and used 50lb dacron with a 6/0 Gatu hook and landed a 51" sturgeon few days ago and it worked great! Handled the fish easy!
only thing i did was add a bead and a small bullet weight down by the hook
I really like how you showed how to tie it and youd redo to show again so it was clear and no confusion on how to tie up the leader great video
Yes I think they work better than J hooks for sturgeon. Plus we don't gut hook as many, or loose as many on the jump.
I definitely prefer circle hooks over Octopus. We loose fewer fish with circles and don't hook them in the stomach as much.
ok now i know how to tie a sturgeon leader, but how should i tie it to my fishing line?
How long are you suggesting the leader be? I understand the purpose but didn't catch the length you are recommending, thanking you in advance.
YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER! THANKS MAMA MIA!

the stergeon where I'm from are about 3-7 pounds therefore would i need a smaller hook size? if so what size and what kind of bait do I use?
Do you use a sliding sinker ?
Awesome tutorial bruh

How do you store snelled leaders?
I just throw them in individual plastic bags
You attach the leader to a swivel that is tied to your fishing line.
