  • Its been a while, but heres part 2 of the signaling series. Part 3, 4, 5, and 6 have already been filmed and will be coming up this weekend and the following week.
    From ABS to CTC, this technique allows for a universal signaling system, allowing you to model any prototype signaling system you want.

    Very helpful videos! over here in Switzerland the support on english language systems is poor. your work really helps me while planning my U.S.-Railroad :)

    Thanks for putting this together. I will be doing a dual level shelf layout and using modern signals on one level and PRR signals on the other and it sounds like it shouldn't be a big deal to do that with this system. I look forward to getting it all going.

    I wondered about how to do points or turnouts between blocks now i konw thanks to your vid.
    The loco net system is one of the best hassel free ways to set up many items i think........jim

    Some great info on signaling. One day I hope to wire my layout for signaling but not sure what to do. I use the NCE system which I think will run Digitrax electronics. I you said there is not much out there for step by step info. Look forward to the next video.

    • @BarrysBench
      @BarrysBench 9 лет назад

      Scott, NCE will not run the Digitrax electronics directly. What you will need to do is buy a locobuffer-USB computer interface. This will allow you computer to talk to the loconet components. The NCE system will still use it's own computer interface to control the trains.

    All I can guess that is a long of wiring and components to set the signals up around the layout. That is pretty cool how everything is set up to the real world set up with signaling.

    FANTASTIC JOSH!!! Really explains the signals better than what I have been able to find in other places. So eager to get into the rest of the series!! Question for ya: Is there a correct order of connecting components (PR3, SE8C, BDL168, and Command Station) to Loconet for maximum performance?

    • @nsmodeler24
      @nsmodeler24  9 лет назад

      Thanks! No, it does not matter which order you connect them in. You can connect as many as you want, in any order, without any loss of performance. The only suggestion is to connect the PR3 computer interface to the end of your loconet line (i.e. the loco net goes through all of the components and the last one is a throttle connection. The PR3 plugs into the empty socket on the last component.

  • @ClinchfieldModelRailroad
    @ClinchfieldModelRailroad 6 лет назад

    Well done. Very informative. Loconet for signaling by Digitrax or others is the way to go, IMHO. Although Digitrax says their SE8C can control 32 signal heads, this assumes that each head is RED/Green. If you include Yellow (Amber and Lunar) then that's a total of 16 signal heads or 8 double head masts, hence 8 in SE8C.

    • @AdamPreble
      @AdamPreble 6 лет назад

      The SE8C *can* control 32 heads, each with red/yellow/green/dark aspects. There are eight "driver" output connectors (10-pin, for use with the ribbon cable), and through proper orientation of the connections off of the ribbon cable (such as with the SHABC/SH2AB, or modified SMBKs) you get a total of four full heads per driver (per 10 pin ribbon cable).

    So... finally getting around to some of this after 5 years and a move... Anyways, did you guys ever have issues with false triggering? I've wired it up "home rail" wiring, aka, the detected rail being the gapped rail and the common rail being ungapped.

    So when you had to rewire your layout, you had to separate each block into a DCC power district?

    • @nsmodeler24
      @nsmodeler24  9 лет назад

      The layout was already separated into basic blocks. We added some and modified others to make it more prototypical. The biggest thing we had to do was make blocks for the control points which weren't there before...

    Does the system work with other DCC systems like nce or mrc?

    • @nsmodeler24
      @nsmodeler24  9 лет назад +1

      Yes, I believe it should. It will just be independent of your command station system.

  • @ClinchfieldModelRailroad

    If you include a Team Digital CSCe ( Central Signal Controller) TeamDigital1.com then you don't need to have a PC tethered to your signals running JMRI. Each CSCe can control 22 signal heads or 10 signal masts. However you will need the PC and PR3 to program the CSCe using JMRI but once that's done, you can omit the PC for every day operation.

    I've watched parts 1 & 2 so far, and I have to say fantastic job explaining prototype blocks and signals. The Digitrax system you're using seems really great, but I'm wondering, does MRC offer similar hardware? We have made a significant investment in their Prodigy system, so we need something that is compatible with that.

    Josh, another question for you. First, love the helpful videos! I am understanding signaling a lot better!! Question: when using the PR3 the way you are showing, can it still be used to program Locomotives on a separate programming track?

    • @nsmodeler24
      @nsmodeler24  9 лет назад

      I haven't tried it but it should be able to, yes

  • @JTTheRailfan
    @JTTheRailfan 9 лет назад

    i went through all the videos parts. they are helpful. but I don't know if I want to buy all the equipment because its a little pricy. One question is do you think I should dcc my layout first. Also do you think it be better to buy the pr3 to all the components or should I buy tsmk's and assemble the lights accordingly to the se8c. I'm also nerves about trying to start it because I have an n scale layout and I'm not sure if the devices you used will work for me on n scale. thanks for the videos though.

    • @nsmodeler24
      @nsmodeler24  9 лет назад

      JT The Railfan Hi, Thanks for watching. I can be a little pricey. I would recommend DCC. I would start out with the PR3 if you are not sure what to buy first. That way you can test each of the components as you install them. If you wire it up with TSMKs / signals / BDL-168s then hook it up to your computer and something is wrong, it will be very hard to isolate the problem. I could contact digitrax directly regarding you N scale questions!

    • @JTTheRailfan
      @JTTheRailfan 9 лет назад

      that be nice. but I still need a computer to do it with. maybe lab top so maybe soon. im also about to change my layout soon. to a different location.

    If I understand your setup correctly, you have signaling INTO and OUT OF your yard area, but do not have occupancy inside your yard. Is that correct? I guess that's "normal". I am planning to start incorporating signals onto my layout, and your tips and ideas have been very helpful already.

    • @nsmodeler24
      @nsmodeler24  8 лет назад

      +David McRae That is correct! A small detection circuit in the yard might be helpful, but not necessary
