Nice vid! Glad your machine came decently calibrated. Joint the face of two boards and put them jointer face together. It will exaggerate and make obvious any problem with the how flat they are.

What was the end result of the face jointing test? I have an A3 41 on the way after wavering for a year between that and the Minimax but tolerances on the tables still making me nervous.
It worked great and had to touch it yet. I'm about to build a dining table. It will be a good test for some longer boards.

I thought about taking the hoodie off while but running wood through it too... not sure if that makes it worse or not. I'll try to step up my safety!

I bought the A3-41. I got it in July last year. Took 9 or 10 months to show up. It showed up with the beds so out of wack I couldn’t even push a board across it. They wanted $850 to send someone up to Seattle from California, but they weren’t gonna be in my area for 5 months. To Hammer’s credit, they spent HOURS over MANY days FaceTiming with me, teaching me how to align the machine. I eventually did get it aligned after a few weeks of effort but it was painful. My beds are less true than yours, but that is expected since they are larger. Overall I am happy with the machine given I don’t have space for two separate machines. Only lingering issue is a little snipe on the leading edge of my boards. I’ve increased in-feed roller spring tension, but haven’t eliminated the problem. FYI - we have the same Dust collector and table saw.
lol crazy about having the same machines. Having the extra 4 inches would be great. I asked about the 41 but the lead time was huge and the cost was more than I could spend right now. I really lucked out with them having a couple extra 31's ready to go. Interesting about your bed's being so messed up. I was a little scared that would happen to myself but lucked out.

I was literally adjusting my DJ15 (helical head) today for this similar issue. A very slight deviation on the flattening. It’s worth it but I highly recommend you do some internet research to ensure you don’t spend all day trying to get it right. Took me a good 30 minutes In all and made me more aware of my jointers functions and what not. It’s nowhere near a hammer. But it’s just a good thing to do to learn about your equipment good or bad. It just makes you a better more knowledgeable individual.
I use my friends A41 time to time and although you have to keep the planner bed under 8” for jointing. It’s not too bad to get it up and down. But it is a nice machine and very quite. Very nice performance and finish to anything I’ve put through it.
100% plan to dive into it more. I'll run some more boards through it and experiment more. Found some videos online that explain it quite well.

Dude nice machine and really appreciate the video. I have the same one A 31 and it is a champ. And I agree with one of the other commenters that wood is going to shift no matter what and it will be greater than the calibration inaccuracies. Also with the beds not being perfectly co planner I heard from other peoples reviews it is to make a slight spring joint. I always took it as when being set up at the factory they are erroring on the side of caution to have a slight spring joint than the other way around for glue ups. I did a big 8 ft table with cherry boards. They had quit a spring joint around +- 1/8”. It is probably do to it being that long of board on the short table beds. And a 6/4 8-9 ft board board not being the lightest board that I got a gap and on top of that lack of experience on the jointer that it was so large. To fix I simply took some of the “spring” out via a hand plane. I think it’s one of those instances of sometimes it’s better to bring the tool to the piece than the piece to the tool. But either way it has up the game and made the whole dimensioning lumber dare I say kinda fun. You get to see the wood just transform. And it is such a clean cut coming from the hammer. That it just keeps the woodworking moving forward. Enjoy it because I know I am. Keep up the videos look forward to seeing the next ones.
Hi Kyle! Thanks for the note. I'm working on a dining room table now and about to start milling. I'm curious how the longer boards pan out. Regardless, can't wait to put 100 bf through this. So far it's just been small odds and ends.

Awesome, I am glad you are liking it. I got the A3-41, had the dewalt 13” planer and was not going back to 12”. One thing I can tell you about the hammer, hold the start button for 5 seconds when starting it, someone mentioned it helps the capacitor or something, electrical is not my thing. Also wax the beds a lot, with the finish it seems to need it more than my old jointer. You can get a 5” hose that fits, I think Lee valley has it, was running mine on a 4” dust port system , changed everything to 6” and reduced to 5” for the hammer, that made a huge difference in chip collection.
Jealous of the 16"! Would have been a little too tight for my little shop. I learned quickly about holding the green button... Tripped the breaker a few times. I actually ripped off the 5" boot and made up a 6" boot for the dust shroud. Made a huge difference on the chip collection.

I didn’t realize that was a jointer/planer combo at first. That’s a slick machine!
Something I noticed on one of Jay Bates recent videos that you might find handy though. He had a piece of plywood the same diameter as the lift wheel with a hole drilled out for the handle, chucked it into a drill and used that to quickly raise/lower the table.

In my opinion, if you are better than .005" then you're good to go. I'm sure Mattias has done some crazy experiment with this, but I'm pretty sure wood moves more than that day to day.
By trying to adjust it further, you risk going backwards....and then loosing a whole weekend trying to get it back.

@@BlakePizzey haha. Thanks! I spent a ton of time getting my table saw fence and blade dialed into to within 0.005...Then I saw a Fine Woodworking article where they only went to 0.010. I think as engineers, we get carried away with tolerances sometimes, wood is a lot more pliable and forgiving than some other manufacturing materials.
I feel quite inadequate compared to y'all - I've been thinking 25 thou tolerance for "fine" woodworking (though may not be fine anymore compared to you both) and about an eighth of an inch for rough carpentry tolerances (stud spacing, etc.) Clearly I need to up my game and I appreciate the diligence!
I love the euro guard dance on my jointer/planer. Be one with the wood and machine. haha
Sweet machine, I think you'll really get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I wouldn't fuss with any adjustments if I were you, unless you really like tinkering.
It doesn't seem too bad. Need to get dust collection connected then I'll really put it to the test and see where we are at.

I see you're in Edmonton. I got mine a few months ago in Ontario. So far I'm pleased (a3-41). It took about 9 months for mine also. Mine took a 30 amp outlet, and wouldn't start on a 20. I'm happy I took the 41 but almost bought the 31 out of concern for size, but as you've discovered they aren't as big as they look on RUclips :)

Hi Anthony! Loving it so far. I haven't put anything longer than 65" and that's about as long as I think I can do without the outfeed extension. It's on the list.
Nice video! How did you get it off your truck? I’m going to order the a3-41 and figuring out how to get it in my shop.
It was a little sketchy... Had four guys and slid it down some ramps while it was bolted down to the crate. Then we used a furniture dolly to get it in the shop. You will love the 41!

Hey Blake. I'm about to get my A3 31 delivered today. My shop is a lot tighter than yours and I was wondering about the mobility of the unit if you had to move it. I've got a Sawstop and Rikon 10-326 as well. This was a helpful video, thank you for posting. Though I do wish you filmed getting that thing off the truck..... Thanks again. Mark
Hi Mark, I should have filmed it... Use a furniture dolly! Very helpful. As for the mobility, it's OK but not the greatest. Moving in and out is easy. You could store it tight against the wall with the fence close to the front and pull it out as needed but if you want to sliding left or right it's a little tough. Just need to zig zag back and forth and eventually it will shuffle where you need it.
@@BlakePizzey Blake, thanks for the quick reply! I actually made my own dolly with 2x4 lumber and joist hangers, extra heavy duty casters, etc., in anticipation of the machine's arrival. I wasn't sure if the trucker would use his skid jack to get it down my driveway, its a long one with a decent slope to it. Guess I'll find out. I know the video is very recent, but are you still happy with your purchase? Thanks again. Mark
Loving it! Just finishing my dust collection right now and will have a video out shortly so you will see more of it. I ended up ripping off the 4-5/8" plastic boot and had a 6" sheet metal round to square made for it. The dust collection is much better now.
@@BlakePizzey I'll be looking forward to that video! Right now I'm still in the process of uncrating the unit. They did a good job with that, lots of GRK screws. I still haven't figured how I'm going to get it off the pallet. No one to help, you could fit all my friends in a phonebooth. I'm kidding, but at 61 all my buddies are my age or older and most have bad backs. By the way, I didn't see a plug and power cord in the mix. Did you buy your own? You show that on your video. I'll have a bunch more questions for you as I progress. If that's something that bothers you, I would understand. I was voted "Most Likely To Annoy" in my senior class... Thanks again. Mark

I have most all the same problems you have except a little worse. I attempted to calibrate but had issues, namely I can’t understand from the instruction manual how to adjust the skew in an individual bed. I guess I need to spend some time on the phone with Hammer and hopefully they can describe it to me. Let me know if you try.

Haha yes... Should have filmed it. We used two 2x6 and four of us slid it then lifted it off the truck. Worked ok. Little scary.

@@careyhenitiuk8423 mine literally arrived a couple hours ago - it’s huge but looks like a massive improvement in quality compared to what I had.
@@AaronGeller Hopefully you gave it a good inspection before receiving the shipment. My first one was badly damaged, to the point they took it back and sent me a second new one. It is a great machine. I've milled boards over 10" wide on it, walnut and cherry, and it is a luxury to easy joint boards that wide and have them come out with minimal milling marks. I've tried to keep the beds waxed. The cast iron feels very rough off the start, but it doesn't take long for them to smooth out some. I try to move around the width to help evenly wear the cutters and beds. Enjoy!

@@BlakePizzey sweet. Yeah I recently went to look at some tools from a guy and he had a Harvey G700. Truly the damn thing sounds like a box fan running on low. But as with you my concerns are at the tool and what not. Plan to pull trigger soon on which way I plan to go is all and why I’m following up on it. Appreciate the insight and feedback. Stay warm!
Anything under .004 don’t even chase it it’ll only cause you unneeded frustration. Man I’m eventually gonna purchase this machine or a minimax. I’ve heard nightmares about the calibration of this machine. I think it’s people chasing under .001 which is ridiculous
That minimax is a beautiful machine! But I've got no complaints with the Hammer, working great. I didn't end up chasing anything further on the calibration. Like you said, just unneeded frustration.
