I have had the Hammer A3 31 for about 5 years and I have not had to tune, adjust, fix or maintain it and it still works like the very first day- Factory settings were perfect from day one.
Because there's hardly any finishing to do I now build furniture in what seems to be half the time.
The money spent on this machine was cheaper over-all compared to buying many other cheaper planer/jointers and the frustrations with down-time, changing blades, maintenance, etc that came with the the cheap (and not-so-cheap) machines.
Why this Austrian company does not get more recognition I don't understand.
I could not be happier with my machine- it's still my favourite piece of shop equipment: until I get my new Hammer N4400 bandsaw that is.
It goes with the saying: Cry once, buy the best.
Awesome. Quite certain I couldn't make the make sense around here. Love the head on that rig. Just came in from a cold shop after hitting a nail on my 15 inch jet with new blades.

I have a NEW AD 741 still on the pallet in my garage along with a BF7-41 combo machine that I have used for many years. Great stuff.

I have the the A3 31 Hammer 12”. It is perfect for the garage woodworker. The spiral cutter leaves a wonderful surface. I do however finish the surface with a finely set, very sharp 4 1\2.

Btw you did miss one other option for flattening and thicknessing boards that’s actually appropriate for a traditional hand tool shop. A low paid apprentice who works for food, clothing, and shelter. Also referred to as “son.” 😁
LOL. My sons aren't strong enough for that yet, so they just grab the boards for me!
Bought a Hammer A3 31 last year and am really happy with it.

I'd highly recommend an oneida super dust deputy separator over the lid one shown in the video. The separation is so much better... until your garbage can fills.

Thank you for the video. Did yours come with that “F” rail hanger that is installed on the outfeed side of the thickness planer? This is where you can hang an extension table that Felder sells. Thx

Yes, Felder is great. All their machines are nicely finished and easy to use. And they put a lot of effort in their sales.
The only thing I can see to improve is your dust collection situation, a bit cumbersome to have your path blocked when thicknessing alone.
flip the dust extraction hose up over the flipped up jointer bed, works great that way! 😁👍🏻

DId you ever think about getting the AD 741 vs the AD 941? Just curious...
Easy wood turning tools use those carbide tips. They last forever (not literally) If you wanted to you could sharpen them on the flat side.
What did you end up doing for power? Is the show wired for 3 Phase?

I have the Hammer A3-41 and while the planer (thicknesser) works great the tables are out of tolerances. I contacted Felder and the will replace my tables soon. Then I'll make a video review about it.
I have to say that I'm quite disappointed in Hammer machines but the Felder series are really good.
Yours is Felder 900's series and it is top of the line from that range.
How come you haven't opted for 951? This will definitely be my next one.

I have a Hammer, but I REALLY wish I had gotten a Felder or SCM. The Hammer took some unneeded quality reductions in key areas that affect its usability. Im thinking about creating a video review for it to showcase the problems it has, which shouldn't be there for a machine that cost over $6k
Congrats. I bought the A951L jointer two weeks ago. What a game changer it was for me leading to question why did I let myself suffer with my previous 12” jointer. Felder is solid. Keep those good videos coming

@@WoodAndShop yep a new reality "plane". i was lucky to find a 12" J/P new for cheap but the fence never stayed square to the bed and the beds were hard to keep coplaner. after 3 years enough was enough. The real upside are the long beds where you can run 10' boards no problem by yourself.

FELDER makes nice machines I wouldn't use one like that I have separate machines there is a lot of time switching back and forth if you have to make one pass here or there, but if you don't have the room that isn't a bad option

2) What did you do with your Grizzly planer?
3) Looks like a great machine for increasing your productivity. But what about your students. Very few will have the opportunity to use anything that nice in the future. Plus you still need to teach them how to glue boards together.
Seems this is not a helical cutter head, but rather a spiral cutter head. Cannot find the word 'helical' on their website. Weight is 1,342-pounds.

A few comments. 1. Looks like a great machine. 2. Whats the purpose of the guard if you dont use pushsticks and move your hand right over it, seems to be more of a risk. 3. I went to the website and you have to submit personal information to request a quote, I didn't care for this at all. 4. I love that cutterhead. Looks like a fantastic piece of equipment though, first time you actually enjoyed milling Im guessing....LOL
Technically you only need a planer to get things done.. but, bigger is alway better.

5:18 i notice when jointing the edge the fence was deflecting.
Its fine it just moves to the side a little bit it doesnt tilt when its locked

2 different uses and a planer is faster after you use the jointer
I got rid of mine since it was almost impossible to lift the tables. Felder was not particularly helpful to resolve the issue. I am very happy with my new Powermatic Jointer and Planer.

That guard would drive me crazy, especially on longer boards.
Why? I think the Euro comfort guard is ingenious! Beats any pork chop guard in my book!
I' know how having the best tool for the job feels, but I'll be buying another car before I buy that, hell, 3" of snipe is quite welcome when it saves me 6 ft of hand planing... and I can't afford wider board anyway!

@@tsjedi1 NO, if only had to do one. Jointer all the way! And get the widest one you can afford. This can do edges and faces, where as a planer really only does faces. 👍🏻
I’d say planer. A good router and solid fence can be a jointer. The dewalt planer w/Byrd can get you pretty far to start with.

Went to check out the price and the prices of the other models and it required a password and jumping through lots of hoops, and wanted a ton of personal information. I just wanted to know the price. They just lost a potential customer. I don't do business with any company that hides info and lacks transparency. Cool video though.
Not sure why people try to be obtuse about pricing. Not like it isn't easily searched a lot of the time. The 941 with helical head is like 11,500 or some such.

It has nothing to do with hiding the price. The machines are built to order and have lots of different upgrades available. It 's just easier for them to have a sales rep "build" a package for you. I ordered almost this exact same one a few months back on sale for around 15k.
Felder is a very Austrian company to do business with. The sales staff are high handed and condescending. I bought a panel saw from them. Never again. Nothing was properly dialed in and when I dared to complain the distributor threatened to sue me !
I informed Felder in Austria about his behaviour. He lost his franchise shortly after. Nothing has changed though. They still treat customers like idiots, especially if you ask intelligent questions. Felder is gimmicky and overpriced.
Snipe is caused by incorrect cutter knife adjustment. i.e. your cutters are too far out, adjust them back in a few thousandths, should solve the problem. jouinter knives too should be set exactly to the level of the outfeed table, too high and the edge wont be straight , anf you will get snipe cuts
That's partly true if your jointer or planer use knives. But my grizzly used spiral cutterheads, which can't be adjusted. No amount of adjusting of the beds would fix it.
Mark and Joshua, of course Mark is right that a cutting circle higher than the plane of the outfeed table is going to result in a snipe while jointing, and of course Joshua is right about the insert cutterhead, as that is one of its virtues: no dicking around with knife projection. But even with old style cutterheads, the jointer's outfeed table height is the place you make that teeny adjustment. In fact, as knives and inserts often develop nicks sooner than we like, I find it a constant process of adjusting that outfeed table to meet the effective height that the whiskers on the freshly cut surface impart to the stock. 'Course, that doesn't address the thicknessing function issue of a pressure bar that might not meet the cut stock and perform its function, but I don't think that Felder combo machines are equipped with a pressure bar for thicknessing: is that right Joshua?

I've used this model while I was doing sub contract work. After a few week's building case work for a pipe organ I started to hate it.
The tables tend to go out of alignment and so does the bed for the thicknesser, so getting repeatable accuracy across the width and length of the timber is not possible.
The problems lie in the lightweight engineering of many components such as the fence and this has always been a weakness if Felder machine's. They don't stay in adjustment and dialing them back in is a pain.
I would never buy a combination machine. They slow you down and they simply do not give you the best result's.

There are simply limits to the repeatable accuracy and stability of that design. It's the reason why most professional woodworker's don't like combination thickness planers. To much lost production time spent changing functions, not enough accuracy. They are also are prone to snipe.

No, I don't think so. I have my own workshop now but I still do sub contract work for other guys now and then and have to use their machines unfortunately. Felder is not engineered to handle larger heavier timbers. It's a modular system that relies heavily on jack screws and sheet metal chassis.
So changes in temperature affects their adjustment along with heavy loads. This is why old timers like me prefer full cast iron machines that are single purpose. We need accuracy and reliability on big cut lists otherwise the job turns in to a nightmare.
For hobby guys like you it may work okay but you don't find out a machines limitations until you put it to serious work. I have used many Felder machines over the years and it's always the same problem. Lack of repeatable accuracy due to insubstantial engineering. Using jack screws to mount cast iron tables is just an engineering cheat, end of story. Especially when it's a combination machine that is constantly being switched from one function to another. Felder is a rich man's hobby machine. It also appeals to small woodshops where they are using low skilled employee's doing hack work. No serious size shop will use Felder, it just won't cope with the rough handling and heavy stock.

Video idea: build a Krenov style plane without a plane or electricity (machines). Sandpaper is allowed, chisels and so on. The scenario is: you need a plane but you don't have a plane but you need a plane. You have only a basic assortment of chisels and other inexpensive luxuries such as sandpaper.
I found it funny how most all videos of people building krenov style planes involve a fully equipped wood workshop where they hop from one industrial grade power sucker to another until they achieve nirvana with a simple little wood plane.
Edit: I have a blade coming in a day or two along with David Fincks book on the matter of wooden planes - I'm gonna try and film the process of making a plane without a plane or electricity :)
When to website to look at machine and got the fill out to see price list then got a call for quote. Love the channel but dishonesty loses my business every time.

Mobile bases are awful. Have someone weld on heavy duty casters. I'll send ya the bill.
Watching people waving their hands that close to a jointed blade is exactly how people lose their fingers. 2:43. Fingers easily can slip right underneath that guard. Use the jointer with push blocks, remove the work piece and walk away. Don't do video demonstrations on top of the machine while it's running, even when it's powering down the blade is still running. Lots of Woodworkers with no fingers have made the same mistake, they shut the machine off, the blade is still running and they go to grab the end on the board closest to the cutter and stick their fingers right in the cutter blade knowing that they've shut the machine off.
This make me furious with jealousy....

@@daveklein2826 Health and safety on the job is no joke. I worked in that field and had to counsel ten co-workers of an operator that had half his body pulled inside a machine. Most of it had to be scooped and vacuumed out of said machine. Those safety features are there because one day someone paid a high price for not having them. I had a friend who needed special shoes because he was missing his left big toe, it had been grafted on his left hand to replace his thumb ripped out by a saw blade, funny eh!
Joshua's technique, especially coupled with the Euro style guard, was completely safe.
