Things really haven't changed that much since 78. Instead of large body on frame sedans, everyone is now in a large body on frame truck. Instead of CBs, everyone has smart phones. The gas prices are higher, but so are wages. If you go back to 38 then things were a lot different.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q gas has increased higher than wages have. Thanks, Biden! Homelessness in LA is thousands of times worse today. People are leaving Cali in record numbers because of the cost of living, crime, drug use and taxes.
No one noticed the ultra rare 1976 KZ900 LTD being used in this scene? The whole show was an ad for Kawasaki motorcycles and jet skis. Loved this show.
@TG I actually remember watching these CHiPS episodes when they debuted and sure enough I do remember watching an ad for Kawasaki "Let the good times roll" spot during the show at one point! Didn't know they had such stealthy advertising back then!
I'm not from California but I do have a fascination for it. 45 yrs old, been truck driving 2 yrs, I guess the fascination stems from my childhood, movies, tv shows. Used to watch Chips w/ my late Uncle, hot wheels cars, etc. OH, and the movie " Corvette Summer "
I love these old shows. I watch so I can see (salivate over) the old cars & motorcycles. I'd so love to once again own or drive some of the old muscle cars.
Those ol' Dodge Monaco's were fast, but only in a straight line and could not stop. Probably why I broadsided a car while chasing a bike back in 1979. And I did not have a tailored uniform like Ponch and Jon.
I love these "Chips filming locations" vids. I live them all but especially this one, since this one is one of my favorite episodes. Thanks for making them. Keep em coming and keep up the great work. Thanks again.
@Ken Lompart Many do, yes. But I sitll find it so neat to see the shows 1970/early 80s versions vs todays versions. I even take an odd comfort in the ones that haven't really changed.
Leaves her on the shoulder of the freeway less than two miles from the Nightstalker's house? Ponch! On the bright side traffic really thinned out after Ponch and his partner took off. Was that a KZ 1000! I guess the speed was controlled in the LA River.
Tbis show was a favorite of mine as a kid. I love how at 2:02 he looks to his left as he enters the LA River bed, as though actual traffic might be coming his way from that direction, as in a standard intersection.
This is the 2 and the 210 interchange. They used this location a lot. The 210 and the 118 were their go to freeways. Especially if they were preforming a stunt. Watching these episodes as an adult that grew up in LA is fun. They will start a chase at the beach, cut to the foothills, then there's a huge crash deep in the Valley. Those bikes must be fast because they just traveled 60 miles in 90 seconds.
Whenever I watch these old shows I wish I could just step thru the screen and go back to then. 1976-80 or so. Those were my years, 78 was the BEST. I was a radio DJ starting in 75 until I became a cop in 1980. The first 25 years or so after HS in 78 were just loads of fun. Work was fun even. As to these Monacos, they used about six ex-CHP ones for the Bluesmobile. They all had the sand tan interior. All the others in BB were ex-Chicago PD (about 60) bought by the movie company for the big chase/smashup scene. CHP bouth thousands of those Monacos and every now and then another one appears out of a field. Heck, as recent as 2005 you could almost find a used one for sale at will on Craigslist or eBay. Not so much now. Still, they're only like 43 years old now. Thosands were beaten to death then robbed for their motors. Sad.
Those Monacos came off the assembly line as dangerously slow. Entering freeway traffic from a stop on the right shoulder was a hair raising experience at best. The CHP actually dumped them mid contract for their lack of performance.
Compared to say Singapore or Dubai not much has happen in the USA when it comes to infrastruktur it seem. Looks like politicians use most tax money for wars
Jerry Brown became governor- for his first go around - roughly a couple of years before chips started. He and his transportation secretary- Guitarco (so) we’re not freeway friendly. Took too long to finish the 210, and several needed links were never completed. 710 tunnel, harbor frwy, century frwy to 405, etc.

thats neat you even filmed some of it when it rained like in the show. i remember back when i was a kid california was a cool place, boy has it changed
Yes, definitely intentional. For other clips, I would film it on a typical sunny day, but for this one, I wanted it be raining, so I waited for many months to film it in the rain.
1976 Kawasaki KZ900LTD. The only year of production. I had one that was highly customized in the early '80's. Would love to have another in stock configuration.
You gotta remember, throughout the series he was always in Contrare's Doghouse, he was doing his best to behave, only thing that sucked was that final chase, and when Grossman backed one patrol car into it causing a lot of damage!
And that was way up from when I got my first bike in 1975. 35c. I could go 250 miles on less than a dollar. This was probably just the "high" Cali price.
Minimum wage in California 1978 was $2.65/hr .52¢ a gallon is 19.6% Minimum wage in California 2018 is $11/hr , $3.80 a gallon is 34.5% Gas is cheaper now?
@@MusicMentality1904. I agree. All things car are more expensive for the base worker. Economy cars today cost 15k to 22k, insurance is high and you must have very high coverage due to repair costs, shop prices are $140/hr and things like engine repair take ten times as long (though engines now go much longer w/o maintenance), tires used to be $20 and now they are $100 each. Parking is $20 a day or more. Put all together, it was MUCH cheaper then. I don't know where that guy is finding gas in California today for $2.15. Maybe Houston, but I still bet $2.50 is a bargain price there. Plus the 52c gas was 89-90 octane with 93-95 octane at 60c on that sign.
