Steven Spielberg and Dennis Weaver deserve huge applause for creating such a timeless classic. It's quite amazing how a movie with a simple plot like this can be made into such a fantastic thriller.

The truck never once transforms into a cybernetic organism. There isn't a a single attractive woman proving that she's as strong as anyone else - or even stronger. The sets are so real looking that they're dumb. No one has cool incomprehensible super powers that can only be bested by someone else's cool incomprehensible super power. Zero glowing things that may or may not explode. Zero establishing shots of the earth with some huge thing heading towards it. Absolutely no flying people. No one ever lands on the ground in a cool flex pose while the earth ripples under them. No energy beams of any type. None. Bore-ring...

Personally, I was very fascinated by the Californian landscapes of the 70s, its small towns in the interior, its motels, its gas stations etc. . I am nostalgic for that time.
I live within 15 miles of all of this (the Canyon Country area of Santa Clarita). There are areas around here that still have the small-town vibe of 40 years ago. Acton is one such town. The stone-faced restaurant is still there and is noted for its fine cuisine. There is an old motel about a mile down the road from it that is under the same ownership as the restaurant. Many of the locations still have that "left in the oven too long" look. This is a very interesting film.

Great work. Fell in love with this brilliant movie when I was 15 in 1978. The genius of Spielberg with the panoramic views with cameras mounted on the vehicles have made it a classic. Nobody could have played this role as well as Weaver!

Hi from Australia. I was prob in grade 3 when I saw this at the drive in around 1972 or so.What a great movie, really made an impression. Also remember seeing Jaws and Night of the living Dead as a double feature not long after. Holy shit haha blew my mind.
Thank you! This was so very well made! Not only are the "then & now" locations interesting, but the presentation of it outstanding! Very well executed indeed!
I would like if you overlay "2023" in a corner of the new shots, as sometimes it is not immediately clear what one is looking at. Great work, keep it up!!
...and me too. 1976 born. Watched Duel for the first time only a few years ago after my dad kept mentioning how good it was. When I saw it, the first thing I noticed is that the main actor is virtually a double of how my dad looked at that time on photos. My mum and my husband agrees but my dad doesn't see it at all!😂 Brilliant film and an outstanding filming locations video.
Duel has been a true classic and I still remember being scared out of my mind as a 6 year old in 1971 watching this movie with my family. The suspense was non-stop and everything Spielberg involved was terrifying including the choice of truck to use for the film. For those that do not know, Steven Spielberg used the exact premise of Duel when filming Jaws. He felt the unknown was more terrifying than actually seeing what was coming... With that concept of not seeing the truck driver and only that menacing looking truck, he never showed the full shark in Jaws until the last 30 minutes of the movie making it even more terrifying and creating the first Summer blockbuster. Duel was the first of many to come. Pure genius...
True! Plus there was always something menacing about just seeing the arm - waving him past - telling us - YUP - there is a man in that truck trying to kill him.
I used to drive all those roads when I lived down there Soledad, Sierra hwy,Godde pass I drove my MG all over them.the place where the truck went off the cliff was called Mystery Mesa i used to fly model gliders there and actually had to climb down the cliff to retrieve a model airplane Thanks for the memories

Cool video! At exactly 2:49 I spotted something that I remembered very well as a kid. On the far left of the frame you can see part of the 14/5 interchange where the connecting ramp collapsed during the Sylmar quake. In this shot you can see both the section remaining as well as a small part of the ramp that fell onto the ground below. Even crazier, in 1994 the rebuilt ramp *also* collapsed during the Northridge quake.
And all the more reason to give up Portland cement for the ancient Roman formula that requires only limestone, volcanic ash, and sea water, especially since the Portland formula has too high of a mercury content.
Nicely done. Note that the entire opening coming out of the house, driving out of LA, the laundromat interior, railroad crossing and Soledad tunnel scenes were not in the original broadcast version at all. Those scenes were filmed a full year later in order to make the movie long enough for overseas theatrical release.
"the entire opening coming out of the house, driving out of LA, ... were not in the original broadcast version" Thanks for that. I thought my memory was going -- didn't remember any of it.
Great video, thanks for posting, I remember the movie Duel, classic movie, which shows you don't need fancy special effects to make a great film, just a car and a truck.
@@GPCalifornia So the whole truck v car scenes was shot on 16km (10 miles of highway)?, I thought it was over several hundred kilometres, thanks I didn’t know that.
As a kid of the 70’s I would scour the TV Guide for this move, and one other highway terror movie, Night Terror, in which Valery Harper is a housewife terrorized by a psycho killer. Both movies would often be played as the late, late, late movie and I would never miss either one! My parents certainly would not let me stay up that late to watch a scary movie, so I would set my alarm for 1am, sneak down to the den and sit 6 inches from the TV with the volume real low! The next day when I was too tired to go to school I would fake a stomach ache, stay home from school and watch The Price is Right and Let’s make a Deal while mom made me cinnamon toast! My parents were either very naive, or more likely just great parents who gave me a wonderful childhood. Rest in Peace Mom and Dad. 😘
Still one of my all time favorites.Watched it as 11 y/o kid. The TV network hyped and promoted it, so I was anxious to watch it. Is on my bucket list to ride to the highway on my motorcycle.
this movie is great, i ve watched only about two times.., last about one weak.. omg such a great angles of cameras, for that time 1971! vau i couldn belive it.. i am 1979 year i love this older movies.. great work on this video also..
In middle school I stayed home from school on a sick day, probably around 94 or 95. This was the day time movie on tbs or something, I remember I was gonna change the channel because it just seemed old and out dated, but I watched the whole movie and loved it
This is so underrated. What a classic film and gem. Probably one of my favorites from this era. I always thought that the mystery behind the devilish driver of the truck adds so much to the film as much as the other aspects of intensity and suspense. Thanks for the video and shots about this location, then and now. As a Californian, I love that.
Superb video great to see the filming locations then and now ,i always loved this film Dennis weaver was a great actor a simple film idea that worked and was massively entertaining .

Thank you for making this video. This movie is the greatest movie of all time. It's very nostalgic watching this. That road is still closed! Too bad it was private land at the end. That scene is beautiful! I watched this movie for the first time when I was 9 (1979). Scared the shit outta me, lol. 😂

I seen this movie Duel hundreds of times and still love watched today. I might one day drive to the areas where they film this movie. Thank you for making this video!
Very underrated undervalued movie. This is Speilbergs first collaboration revealing his immense talent. The acting of Dennis Weaver is amazing and believable. After watching, you can't imagine anyone else playing the part he plays. Excellent movie that grips you and builds to a nerve-racking end. 5 stars!!!!
Criminally underrated. When I talk about people usually have no idea till I say something like "the big truck trying to kill the little car" or as an old friend called it "the movie where the guy talks to his steering wheel"
The oft-featured Sierra Hwy was originally part of US 6, which ran from Boston to Los Angeles. It still exists in California between Bishop and the state line. It's a great little drive from Canyon Country (north of LA) out to the desert, where it runs into US 395. I think it's a great little piece of movie magic that a round trip through LA County can be made to look like a linear chase movie.
This as always been a favourite of mine, the filming of the movie was so realistic, the vehicles and panoramic views, these movies came along before the computerized technology,I was a truck driver for many years and came to realise how intimidating you could be behind a can on a remote road if you wanted to pass sounding your horn and flashing your lights, the 70s movies were more real and believable,as like Bullitt and French connection car chases proved and remain the best of all time 🎥
Thank you for sharing. Nice film editing, says someone who knows how much work it is. I rode through there in May 2018 and had magical memories of St. Spielberg's great debut film.
Superb Film. Watched it again today. Great short film of location too, GP Cali, thank you. I'd like to visit the area one day. Long way from the UK, mind!

Thnx for the post. One of my all time favorite movies.. I drive the 14 a lot on the way down to Los Angeles from Tehachapi. Now I know where to stop and take it all in.. Road trip!!
It must have taken you a lot of effort to make this. What a labor of love. Outstanding...even using the same font! As a Duel fanatic, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. Thank you, this was really cool to watch! Remember watching it when it premiered!!!
Outstanding work! I’m old enough to remember this when it was released. Scared the crap out of me! Still a great movie and possibly the inspiration for “Jaws”. Your research and filming are top notch. 👍
Thanks! I always have the jaws theme in my head when the truck is approaching!
WOW! Good catch!
Those scenes were filmed a full year later in order to make the movie long enough for overseas theatrical release.
...and (at least to me) that entire sequence helps set the stage for David being kinda weak in the first act.
@@GPCalifornia Especially when he calls his wife from the laundromat.
@@JrGoonior That scene always reminded me of the pay phone scene in Taxi Driver - except the camera stayed on David.
"the entire opening coming out of the house, driving out of LA, ... were not in the original broadcast version" Thanks for that. I thought my memory was going -- didn't remember any of it.
@@marcmcreynolds2827I was thinking the same!
I am planning to come to LA soon. Will drive the DUEL roads for sure. Thanks for uploading. Great work!
This is the best video on RUclips. No kidding.
What a great movie I saw it as a kid, so well made.
What a great video about a really fun movie. It's interesting to see what has changed and what hasn't in 52 years. Thanks for posting.
Great video, thanks for posting, I remember the movie Duel, classic movie, which shows you don't need fancy special effects to make a great film, just a car and a truck.
and the same 10 miles of road!
Or, really, a "cat" and a "mouse" that people can care about.
@@GPCalifornia
So the whole truck v car scenes was shot on 16km (10 miles of highway)?, I thought it was over several hundred kilometres, thanks I didn’t know that.
I knew the Dual truck driver. Carey Loftin, great stunt driver, all kinds of stunt driving credits.
A legend!
I was born in 1971. I have also been a truck driver for over 28 years.
I have driven a few Peterbilts in my day too
1971 that's over 100 years ago. C'mon man
As a kid of the 70’s I would scour the TV Guide for this move, and one other highway terror movie, Night Terror, in which Valery Harper is a housewife terrorized by a psycho killer. 😘
I love everything about this classic it came out the year I was born..Superb thanks ❤
That was awesome! Great job. Looks like many Rockford Files episodes were shot in and around that area.
Thank you so much for producing this. I saw it as young kid in my local fleapit cinema in rural Australia. Gave me nightmares for weeks.
Oh man - Imagine the same script shot in 71 is Australia!
@@GPCalifornia Now, there's an idea....
@@thurstonhowell3569 Maybe Mad Max Rokatansky can come to this poor gent's rescue!
@@swithinbarclay4797👏👏👏👏👏👏
This video was so well done and expertly edited! What a great tribute to such a classic film!
This was the day time movie on tbs or something, I remember I was gonna change the channel because it just seemed old and out dated, but I watched the whole movie and loved it
I remember it being a mainstay of Saturday or Sunday afternoon movies. Early 80's - 2pm on some high UHF channel!
That was pretty cool! One of my favorite movies that I've watched numerous times and it doesn't get old on me.
Same - its a remote dropper for me!
Agreed! The mystery of the driver is what sells the fear!
Superb video great to see the filming locations then and now ,i always loved this film Dennis weaver was a great actor a simple film idea that worked and was massively entertaining .
Agreed - he did so much with so little (dialog)!
Just subscribed! Thank you for this . Last week, this 52 year old movie arrived from Amazon and I watched it again! I hadn't seen it years and years
Classic Spielberg
FANTASTIC! Thanks for the watch and sub!
Fascinating then and now. thanks for sharing.
14:07 Creator even arranged with CHP to shut down the same street/location!? Man, that's dedication to authenticity! 🏅
😊
Beautiful, and so well done, Duel is a classic of American cinema with these magnificent regions...thank you very much!!!
Dual was one of the simplest, most intense movies I ever saw. Non stop entertainment. Or as TV Guide described it , "high octane" entertainment.
Very well done. Research was exceptional
I first saw this movie over 20 years ago by mistake, I was bored and flipping the controller, stumbled upon it and would never be the same, Classic.
Thank you for making this video. This movie is the greatest movie of all time. It's very nostalgic watching this. That road is still closed! Too bad it was private land at the end. That scene is beautiful! I watched this movie for the first time when I was 9 (1979). Scared the shit outta me, lol. 😂
Excellent video, I think is such good film for Spielberg's first film. I've ordered a copy on 4K blu-ray.
AWESOME! Glad it's helping to remind people how great it is - and seeking it out again!!
Great film back in the day and fascinating to see the locations today. Love it, thank you ❤.
I have watched the movie 30 times. I'd like to thank you for giving all your viewrs the chance to remind the filming locations in 2023/2024. God bless and congratulations on your revival.
Great movie & awesome video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
I seen this movie Duel hundreds of times and still love watched today. I might one day drive to the areas where they film this movie. Thank you for making this video!
Loved it. Well done. One of my favorite movies. ✌️
Thanks for watching!! Great movie!
AWESOME WORK YOU DID
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
That was an awful lot of work to go to these locations and put this all together. Thank you - as a fan of the movie I really enjoyed this!
It was fun - thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for posting this ,I loved the movie when it first aired, it sure made me feel nervous, I was 20 yrs old.
Nicely done, I really like these then and now compilations.
Thank you - they are fun to make when most of the movie was made on public roads!!
5 stars!!!!
This movie is extremely underrated!
Criminally underrated. When I talk about people usually have no idea till I say something like "the big truck trying to kill the little car" or as an old friend called it "the movie where the guy talks to his steering wheel"
That’s why it was a movie of the week instead of appearing on theatre screens.
The movie was later lengthened then released in theaters.
Thanks for this bro. Just now I watched the movie. Its amazing no words in the climax. ❤from bengaluru India.
It's fun to drive all those old highways into the high desert and mountains!
...just a little bit more traffic now, yeah right!😂
I love the Southern California scenery, bravo you've done a great job, thank you.
Should have taken a sick day. Was 17 when I saw it. Still watch ⌚️ now again. Nothing made like 😢 this any more
Excellent video. I was 15 years old when I saw this on TV. Jostled some sweet memories. Thank you!
Thanks! Most of the area still looks exactly the same!
@@GPCalifornia I can imagine, it’s fairly rural. Seems to be a bit more housing along the stretch of road where Mann first encounters the truck. I’ve just alerted my dad to this video; hopefully he’s going to see it later. It’s his favourite film along with 12 Angry Men.
A very memorable movie. Watched it a few times
Amazing, very good
Thnx for the post.
I saw this as a little kid and it gave me nightmares for years. I still love to watch it and quote every line. So happy to see Chuck's Cafe is still standing. Btw, I play meat.
Ah thanks! Love the movie too - It was a trip seeing all the locations more or less looking the same. Thanks for watching!
Waiter: " What happened out there?"
Salesman: "OH just a minor complication."
Waiter: "OH? Looked like a big complication to me."
I bought it on dvd back in 2000 still watch it.
