Im liking the Mixbox, personally. Really digging that riff as well! I like how there are those super subtle offbeat couple of licks toward the end to throw u off a bit. Still melodic and heavy. Well done.
to me it really just seems like spritibox is more out of box easier to use for low tunings compared to nolly which can be harder to dial in drop f or drop e tones
I think that's right, though for dropped tunings on the NDSP side Fortin Nameless is excellent. And the MixWave Spiritbox is closer to that in voicing, though they're based on different amps (Fortin vs. 5150). But even though the Nameless is only one amp, still they're compareable. Because the blue amp in Spiritbox is the ONE. The red amp doesn't sound so good. And the clean amp is nice, but there are plenty of clean amp choices. Still, all three are great plugins. Nolly has the breadth, Nameless has the focus, and the Mixwave is somewhere between those. And it's on sale for about 60 atm, which is a lot cheaper than NDSP, at least until/unless they put a deep discount on later this month too. Plini is an option too, Plini has nicer clean tones than Nolly, and it's high-gain tones are great too. STL Josh Middleton is a competitor too, fantastic 5150, but also the Peavey XXX and rectifier too. STL Tonality Andy James is an option if you want nice cleans, the VOX AC30 is good.
Nolly will forever be my go-to for bright sparkling tones (maybe with some Rabea sprinkled in), but I think Gojira would have been a more fun comparison for the heavier rhythm tones. I actually prefer mixwave here for that, it's just thicccc.
I constantly see people online praising Gojira, I need to pick it up soon. I used Nolly cause that’s what they used on Eternal Blue for distorted tones
@@Nic.Arreola Gojira is really good and I absolutely love it, but I feel like Nolly just always had a lot more usecases. Gojira only really excels in a few specific situations (especially with relatively high tunings like drop D or drop C on a 6-string, which makes sense since that is what Gojira uses), yet Nolly feels like it's really useful on pretty much every metal song imaginable. This is also where Mixwave Stringer comes in for me, because it also feels extremely versatile to me. I still like Nolly a little more most of the time but Stringer also has some very very good tones in there. Specifically the high end on otherwise extremely low tuned guitars just sounds sooo crisp to me.
@@firmans12 hell even compression is nice for rhythm guitars, add it to low tuned rhythm guitars and it can get rid of the lower strings being fucking explosive sounding instead of them being clear
great demo. yeah, I compared the trial of Mixwave with Nolly and was like: ok cool, no GAS syndrome, my money are safe haha. The trick with Nolly is trying different IR's. Neural stuff still sounds fantastic, their simulations are almost spot on
I like the mixwave. From a mixing standpoint, ive found it easier to be subtractive with my eq rather than additive, and theres plenty of brightness to take away from, almost like an orange head.
Interesting, i find Orange amps incredibly dull, round and fuzzy. All the EQ on the guitars is subtractive, just removing resonances, cutting low end, and a slight scoop. While the nolly had more i needed to remove, i liked having that option to not go as hard on the EQ and retain the extra top end While the mix wave started where nolly ended, if not a little too middy and dark
My only experience with them was an ad30 (9 tubes 🥹) dual channel into ppc212. I put a vox valvetronix as the multifx using the vs5 footswitch. I would toggle between the dual rec and fender bassman sims and it rocked. It is definitely round and fuzzy, but i like that. I eventually parted with it as replacing tubes would be pretty costly. I have the neural granophyre and fortin cali, those are pretty nice. I tried out some mixwave and my favorite feature is probably the gate, it seems to work a little more dynamically than the ndsp stuff, although i wish there was an option to just buy the amp and cab instead of the whole suite

nice video ! Nolly sounds more "accurate" for Spiritbox imo, but they'll probably use mixwave for their new album i guess. Also, why do you use a pick this big ? how does it feel ?
I prefer Nolly, sounds lively, the Mixwave has a nasal and honky bump in the midrange. I'm sure you can dial those out by switching to different IRs and applying EQs, to marginal returns, if any at all. Point is I'm perfectly happy with the tone from Nolly, I don't see myself buying more ampsims in the future.
Yes, that was my thinking, I have Nameless, and it really excels at the bright heavy sound for downtuned. So I was trying to decide whether to get Nolly or Mixwave, but I think Mixwave sounds more like Nameless. I have OTTO 11 11 11 for the super brutal dark thick tones. So, maybe I need to look at STL (Andy James or ?) and also maybe also compare Plini X and Gojira X too. I don't need a clean amp (have Morgan Suite & Toneking Imperial), and Softube Amp Room JMP/Super Lead are great for Marshall, and their ENGL Savage. So, it's mainly 5150 tones I want. Though it's nice Plini has the Friedman, and Nolly has the hot-rodded Victory, for leads.
@@compucorder64 If you're still looking for a good 5150 sound, check out the Bogren Digital AmpKnob 5169. I think it's the best 5150 sound in a plugin. The Mixwave Spiritbox seems to be based on the Savage 120, but I'm not sure. I have the STL Tones Andy James. It's really good. I've tried all the Neurals, and they're all good. But of all the plugins we're talking about, the Mixwave Spiritbox is the absolute best in the mix. It's insane. I think they know that, which is why it's more expensive.
Great comparison! I’m in the middle of my own review and I’m comparing it to the Fortin Cali (just my personal favorite from NDSP). I like this plugin for 8 string stuff but I mean it doesn’t seem to be providing anything that other plugins from STL Tones and Neural haven’t already. I might try to see if my old Bias FX stuff can get close to it. Again, great comparison and thank you for doing this!
I'm not sure how to word it but in my opinion Archetype: Nolly sounds like it makes better use of stereo space than Mixwave: Mike Stringer does, the Nolly tone just sounds a lot less focused in on one spot and doesn't have that in your face presence there to take away the sense of atmosphere. Whereas the Mixwave tone, while not bad at all (I like it a lot actually) just doesn't sound quite right. If I had to choose between the two plugins based on my experience with them I would go for Mixwave: Mike Stringer. But down the road I would absolutely add the other to my collection as well. And I'm sure some of the differences may actually be negligible if you tweak around with EQ, cabinets, and mic positioning.
Each amp sim is using their built in IRs. Nolly is using the cab that matches the 5150. Mixwave is using the cab setup from the Mike Stringer Chunk Preset
Keeping in mind that I am biased to prefer Neural, I thought that the MixWave would win since this is a very Spiritbox style of playing you did, but the MixWave was too dark and sizzly. The Nolly sounded brighter and more articulate from clean to high gain. That said, I don't know what the price difference is, and to each their own, but the Nolly wins it for me.
Nolly is still the way to go for me. The main gain sound for Mixwave has way less high-end information to carve with when mixing, and theres a low/ low mid range i find that gets in the of parallax bass and GGD Drums. The cab sim less cleans also dont do it for me, but thats very pickups dependent However, Mixwave is fantastic for all the little background noises, im doing a full band cover for Secret Garden right now and the delays and reverbs hit the nail on the head for the Spiritbox sound But im not a professional and MixWave is the only thing on the upcoming Spiritbox EP, and that sounds great so far, so what do i know. I love Neural but MixWave sounds much better here; Thanks for the comparison!
