I have changed a lot of points and condensers in my time. I like working on older equipment like the one you just did. So much better built and often times easier to work on and diagnose than the cheaper built new stuff. I feel all nostalgic now. Thanks.
Great job on the video! Your explanations are really thorough and the fact that you take a moment to actually show what you are doing close up is very helpful. Also, closing the outside door really helped to even the lighting which made the light exposure really even too, making the image very clear. This will help folks for years to come. Good work. Keep them coming.
Believe it or not I have the Briggs tool for the points. I’ve had it for almost 50 years. Still works great just used it on the 1968 Briggs. Another great job Bruce. Thanks.
Thanks Bruce, Took apart 1976 Bluegrass tiller today. Found the flywheel key was busted. Replace key, looked at points and condenser (looked new). Assembled everything and it starts and runs good.
Yikes points! I haven't seen those in years. The last time I remember replacing them was when the plunger hole was leaking oil and fouling the points. The fix then was to plug the plunger hole and replace the points with a solid state Megatron ignition module. It was on a snow blower BTW. I think it was around 1985.
Thanks! I think I have the same problem, Now with this video I can fix it, I hope. I watched one of your other videos That showed you taking off the flywheel using a pry bar and an air chisel on the crank shaft to break it loss. I learn something there. Thanks Again. Richard

Thanks for a great video. I can't believe how few people take the time to Like your videos and other excellent videos as well. How did you come up with the primer formula? Please explain.
I thought to use 2 stroke fuel but want something with a bit more oil to lubricate motors that had been sitting around for a LONG time and came up with a 10% mix. It is a bit high percentage but I think it works great.
I actually bought one of these at an auction recently. Anyone know where I can get a manual? I need to do some work on it. I think its a B&S engine but I can't find any serial numbers. My version was made by a company called Canadiana but it looks exactly like this one. Thanks for any help

Today I bought a Belnap Inc. Bluegrass tiller dated Aug. 08, 1976. looks just like this one you are working on. Before I bought it, tiller ran for a minute, then quit. he said someone worked on points just recently. How do you determine if points or coil is bad? How to test coil. Where can I get parts in Kentucky?
1kmiles Well I use an Ohmmeter and measure the resistance over the points closed then compare them to when they are open. It is a very small difference but you can do it.Bruce
Hey Bruce, just scored an old tiller like this one, Areins 6hp. The motor says it's Areins brand also. whould you have any idea what points would fit it. I live in Australia and nobody stocks this brand.
The actual brand means nothing you have to look and see what kind of motor it is. Example Briggs and stratton, Tecumseh, kohler etc. Then google the motor type Horse power. For example google this Points for 6HP Briggs and Stratton motor horizontal shaft
Excellent reference video. I have a tiller one year newer than the one you have worked on in this video. I have no documentation for the machine and I would like to change the oil before using it (I have confirmed it runs and drained the old oil afterwards). Can you tell me how much oil one of these motors takes please? Thank you.
Bruce do you have a recommendation on a price to ask for a 5 horsepower small rototiller well I called them The Hoppers yes Front Tine I know the rear times are better and I have bought one and wish to relinquish the other to a good home runs fine MTD Briggs and Stratton motor
Great video, but I have a question. I always like to order parts of the internet. Today I'am having trouble finding a point set for my tiller. mabe you can help out by letting me know what web page you use to order your points and condenser set? if you would send me a good web page(s) to order parts. I have been using ereplacement, and Jacks parts.
They are all good. Once i find the actual parts number I google the heck out of it and even phone retailers in the area to see f they have it. They (retailers) mostly are 2 hours away and have to pay shipping on them too.
I have the same rototiller and the magneto is bad. I've been having a hard time finding replacement parts for it. Is there anywhere specific I can get parts. I've been doing some research online and have came across a few things. I read Dynamark was bought out in 93' by Murray so I went there with the model number and code (serial number isn't on the label) to no avail. It wasn't in there system. The second thing I found was that the magnetos off Briggs & Stratton 3.5HP engines are compatible with the Dynamark 5HP engines. is that true?
Hello Bruce Pender, I have been trying to fix up my dads old hechingers rototiller. It looks just like this one, the filling wheels locked up and it's not the belts looks like it's coming from the chain case do you have any videos that may help?
@@BrucesShop well thank you anyway this video is very helpful I got the clutch to spin again and the tiller to start right up the downside is I tried to tighten a bolt that held the pin that spins from the chain to the actual wheel and makes the tiller move but I ended up breaking the entire tiller and have to take it apart and see if the chain came off the track or if the bearing snapped

If you've worked on something like this could you possibly explain how to get the end bearings off the side of the chipper's chamber to get that hammer cage out?
Bruce and all the subscribers I am desperate for a instruction or manual on the replacement of the belts for this model of machine. Spring gardening season is upon us, and my wife is wanting to plant ASAP.
Bruce , Great job, have a 7Hp on a mortar mixer that I I cleaned up ,,started now won't, have to ck the points and the magnet or it may be carb problem, cleaned the carb and tank and new fuel line. How do I contact you ? Stony
First check for spark by taking the plug out and connecting it to the plug wire and ground the edge of the plug to the motor and turn it over. You should see a spark. If you have a spark put the sparlk plug back in and squirt a bit of fuel into the carb with the air cleaner off and if it runs for a second you have carb issues which means you should rinse the fuel tank out and clean the carb thoroughly. Good luck let me know here how you do.
How to determine if this part needs to be replaced? You said something that it didn't align but could you explain how I mysekf can figure that out? I got one of these tiller models and it won't start either...
@@BrucesShop I see. And if there is a continuity between the consenser and ground the coil won't produce a spark or SHOULD there be continuity between the condenser and ground? I have little knowledge to how this works but I'm trying.
Well it is a Briggs and Stratton I think. I googled it. The spark plug you want is the major spark plug for that type of motors for 30-40 years. You can't go wrong with a Champion RJ19LM. If you can't find it just google cross reference to it and there is lot's of info on it.
i have a question i have one of these with 8 hp i get a big spark because i touch it and i feel on my hand question is i put gas in the carb try manual start it and no go it wont even try to start what could be the problem?
10w 30 so far, but was thinking of using 30W in it too(Lawnmower calls for it) to make it simpler. The cultivator might just die from like switching from rye to vodka or something though. Maybe I'll spend the $6 and buy the 10/30 too LOL!
I have the same tiller, did all the steps, ran fine for a few minutes, the the points quit opening, I think the "Plunger": is jamming.Where did you find the part numbers for the points, condenser and plunger ??
+Mike Vagg You can dig around and get an electronic one for it. Here is what I found fairly quickly. Maybe a broken one ( a full motor non running) may be cheaper.www.ebay.com/itm/Briggs-Stratton-Parts-ARMATURE-MAGNETO-COIL-Solid-State-5hp-BS-397358-/361209623032
Hmmm. I normally work on cars, but have an old TroyBilt Horse tiller with 5hp B&S pull start. Doesn't start, not seeing a spark. Tried to do what you did here, but when I removed the flywheel, there's no points and condenser back there. I'm lost. Could they be somewhere else? Or are some made without? I do not have an easy start switch, it's is just pull cord to start. Coil does have some mouse chews on wire insulation but I don't see the actual wire yet. (Love your videos!!)
Well there may be a modern coil in the motor or there might be an ignition module to replace the points. Here is one on Ebay. Lots to Google. Good luck. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Small-engine-electronic-ignition-conversion-kit-CPM-01-/150580853458
So the options are: 1) older style (skinny) coil with points & condenser 2) older style (skinny) coil with ignition module 3) modern style (thicker) coil without points/condenser or ignition module Did I get that right?
Bruce Pender Yes it ran years ago when I was gardening. But it just kept getting harder to start. It does have the thicker coil on it. I noticed the underside of the metal block, that you set on the business card to gap distance from flywheel, is all rusty. The single magnet has just a couple tiny spots of rust. I’ll clean in case that makes a difference. The link you gave was all UK eBay, I couldn’t find it on US eBay. This coil only has the number 1892 on it which doesn’t bring anything up online. I’m thinking if l have to replace it just get one that “looks” similar? I can’t find an engine model number either. Thanks for letting me know I had the options I listed above right, that helps a LOT!
Before you remove the coil remove the shut off wire that goes to it, as it may have an accidental ground on it grounding out the circuit. The ground (that shuts of the machine) normally comes from the shutoff switch but on older machines there can be a ground from something else. Rust is not usually an issue. Sorry about the poor reference to ebay I was rushing as usual.
HI BRUCE ironbill here again,im still having trouble with tecumseh engine no spark, how do i ground it? changed everything else known to man, lol,i swapped motors and still the same problem, can u PLZ HELP ME
You may have a spark but not know it. Have you exposed the wire in the spark plug lead and put a plug to ground there. (use an alligator clip lead or just a wire to extend)) I had one that had an end incorrectly installed and the spark never got to the end of the terminal. It fooled me for a bit.
Hi Bruce My Sister has this same tiller and somebody put the wrong size belt on and none of the small engine shops have any parts listings for old mastercraft tillers. I knowit was made by mtd but I cannot figure out how to cross referance to a mtd part # do you have any ideas on how I can figure it out? Thanks
I have an almost identical model to this, I live in Canada, it reads Sheffield on it with a Briggs and Straton engine. My Dad bought it in 1982. The tag which shows the model number is all worn away. I was wondering if you know the part numbers for the drive belts? I would also like to purchase a new handle for it and possibly a fuel tank. Would you be able to help out by any chance? Great video by the way and much appreciated. God bless
On first pull it had 25 then increased well on the next pulls on the reader. HS great spark. Tank is clean. Today I took the carb off...cleaned it up. Pistons are moving good. New flywheel key. I'm dumbfounded.
yeah it's me again it's electronic I get tired of the every year teardown I leave it on concrete in my shed and it sets with rust on coil fan flywheel every year occurrence plus I'm getting too old to get beat up that way
Is points & condenser replacement the fix most of the time when spark is gone? I tried cleaning points on a briggs Edgerton with no success today. Is it easy to switch to electronic setup instead?
Hi Bruce, sorry to ask this question. I need your advice please . I changed my points on my Briggs and Stratton Rototiller 5 HP Machine . But I still do not get and Spark and my Compression test is at 50 . And I did not change the Coil . So any help please
@@BrucesShop Hi Bruce , Wow no I did not disconnected the shut off wire. I will do that and hope it works . My Compression is at 50 . Again thank you so so much for takeing the time and respond to my Mesage. Please keep on doing your video's they teach us alote
@@johngiag2011 Compression is a hard one, --- as most engines have a compression release (Most measure about 50-60) just at the start of the compression stroke to make it easier to pull over. Compression should be more that 100 but it is hard to measure.
tubes? come up with something else to call us okay? liked the video. thanks for sharing. the best person showing small engine repair on youtube is of course donyboy73. you were very helpful also. thanks again
well I don't know those Tecumseh Engines you can't get all the parts have a broken stem on a overhead valve 17 horse Tecumseh part not available single cylinder 4 Cycle however other than that the mower is fine 42 inch cut the deck is good all bearings are sealed and tight like I said the motor has a broken valve stem of course it did split the pan although I do believe I can get around that or at least get a new one any suggestions I guess I'm asking are they all the same
OK, so Ive searched till I'm sick of it. I have a Troybilt proline CRT tiller, it's about 5 yrs old. 2 years back had to have the carb rebuilt, it cost me over 200 bucks. This year it's gone down again. I took the carb off, cleaned the bowl and it still wont start. I'm getting fuel to the carb, but none in it. I know this because I can pour gas in the top and it'll start and run for 1/2 a minute. Any chance you can advise me on what else to do. Maybe a rebuild kit or new carb. This funky ethanol gas is killing small engine owners to bankruptcy.
Well I am not there but if your not getting fuel into the carb the needle may be sticking in the seat and not letting gas in. Like a sticking toilet valve hahaha.
I have same rototiller but it's not working Please can you send me part number or name. And where I can can order. I also need to change the Cole. Please also send me the part number. I already changed the carburetor and it's still not working

Bruce Pender Hmm I don't remember, but maybe it was you I mentioned it to. Thanks...this thing is a pain in the butt LOL.
Sir do you think I have to buy new flywheel. I broke to of two blades or gear . Or still going work. Can I Matel JB weld it.
I wouldn't JB weld on any part of the rotating assembly
hi Bruce.
is that engine working with petrol and oil mixed?
thank you
No same answer at the other one. it uses regular fuel and is a 4 stroke.
Good sir excellent work. Can you please tell me the age and make and all the good? Ive searched for weeks and this is the closest I've come to mine...
I don't know if you can see under the title but this video was made on 2015. I can'y tell you the year now sorry.
Ok thanks Bruce, yes have meter,I'll probably b back, lol how's the weather up there? 45 in port huron mi today!

Bruce and all the subscribers I am desperate for a instruction or manual on the replacement of the belts for this model of machine. Spring gardening season is upon us, and my wife is wanting to plant ASAP.
I can't help you This was an old machine at the time it came in. Sorry.
You didn't understand, it runs with the choke on, it was in the needle valve,
How to determine if this part needs to be replaced? You said something that it didn't align but could you explain how I mysekf can figure that out?
I got one of these tiller models and it won't start either...
I measure with an Ohmmeter to see if the have continuity when the are closed.
@@BrucesShop I see. And if there is a continuity between the consenser and ground the coil won't produce a spark or SHOULD there be continuity between the condenser and ground?
I have little knowledge to how this works but I'm trying.
Hi Bruce my grandfather had one from Montgomery Ward.
cool.
That is a good price.
+manny Check the compression and spark when the piston is at TOP DEAD CENTRE
+Bruce Pender okay thank u
+manny You were right there!!!
I like your videos on mowers an tillers , do you also work on and fix motorcycles ?
No my shop isn't equipped and they are to heavy for me.
I still believe you are a GENIOUS when it comes to small engines .
For this ancient beast (I have a similar one) 10 w30 or just lawnmower 30w?
SavageNorthGarden I confess 10W30 :-) My lawn mower lasted 26 years on it :-)
10w 30 so far, but was thinking of using 30W in it too(Lawnmower calls for it) to make it simpler. The cultivator might just die from like switching from rye to vodka or something though.
Maybe I'll spend the $6 and buy the 10/30 too LOL!
My points are stuck and will not move. Anything I can do?
Remove them . open them up manually and reinstall them to the Top Dead Center and set them at 20.000
I have the same tiller, did all the steps, ran fine for a few minutes, the the points quit opening, I think the "Plunger": is jamming.Where did you find the part numbers for the points, condenser and plunger ??
+Mike Vagg I just googles the briggs points and this is what I got Genuine OEM Part - Manufacturer #294628
Thanks, got them, but I think the spark coil is ng, and it no longer made, they say the replacement is also out of production.
So the options are:
1) older style (skinny) coil with points & condenser
2) older style (skinny) coil with ignition module
3) modern style (thicker) coil without points/condenser or ignition module
Did I get that right?
Right. One thing. Have you ever seen it run?
Bruce Pender
Yes it ran years ago when I was gardening.
Thanks
like you this is one of my major issues. If I was there to help I may be able to do something I am sorry
@@BrucesShop Hey No problem Thanks anyway i bought a couple different sizes and found one that Works 👍
Theres a simple formula as to find the length of the belts needed for that specific model.
God bless
For the engine all you have to do is get the model #. That is easy but the frame for belts is tougher. I use google for that.
@@BrucesShop thanks!
Do you it's going to be a problem if I use the flywheel
If it is only 2 blades I would use it. Sorry it took me a bit to figure out what you were asking. Sorry
I have a 3hp tiller engine made on 10/03/75
ive just gotton one of those ,was given it in bits and now watching on here to try bring it back to life , its gotton rod controls an all
where do you buy that handy hydraulic table you have please???
A video is the best response. It is a few years old now but it works.
ruclips.net/video/yv7FtFWRHaU/видео.html
In the U.S. they sell them at Harbor Freight.
I have a old Taskforce tiller with a 5hp Briggs and it has spark and good compression but will not turn over whatsoever.
Well I have to ask how so you know if it has good compression if you can' turn it over? Is it the rewind?
On first pull it had 25 then increased well on the next pulls on the reader. HS great spark. Tank is clean. Today I took the carb off...cleaned it up. Pistons are moving good. New flywheel key. I'm dumbfounded.

Can you see the spark when the plug is out of the motor and grounded to the frame?
Yes plug fires great. I replaced flywheel key and sanded the rust off
Go to your local lawnmower repair and get a used electronic coil, why fight putting points back in??
yeah it's me again it's electronic I get tired of the every year teardown I leave it on concrete in my shed and it sets with rust on coil fan flywheel every year occurrence plus I'm getting too old to get beat up that way
I understand the getting older part. I am fighting it though.
Is points & condenser replacement the fix most of the time when spark is gone? I tried cleaning points on a briggs Edgerton with no success today. Is it easy to switch to electronic setup instead?
Edger.
I think it is. Here is a video if you want a start.
ruclips.net/video/Wp4XR-Cc3jo/видео.html
Thanks for the quick response. Now to find a donor coil setup.
Hi Bruce, sorry to ask this question. I need your advice please . I changed my points on my Briggs and Stratton Rototiller 5 HP Machine . But I still do not get and Spark and my Compression test is at 50 . And I did not change the Coil . So any help please
Did you change the capacitor , also make sure the shut off lead is disconnected . That can turn things off when you don't want it to.
U gonna touch the plug wire ?
Never Lol unless it is not running LOL
tubes? come up with something else to call us okay? liked the video. thanks for sharing. the best person showing small engine repair on youtube is of course donyboy73. you were very helpful also. thanks again
+bobby redondo Well it is tough everyone should make a video of themselves then put it out for all to see.
don't listen to him Bruce I think you're the tops
well I don't know those Tecumseh Engines you can't get all the parts have a broken stem on a overhead valve 17 horse Tecumseh part not available single cylinder 4 Cycle however other than that the mower is fine 42 inch cut the deck is good all bearings are sealed and tight like I said the motor has a broken valve stem of course it did split the pan although I do believe I can get around that or at least get a new one any suggestions I guess I'm asking are they all the same
well it's an old husky unlike the John Deere's and newer product it's all metal Hood worth saving I believe
I do believe somebody thought it had too much rattle
Bruce Pender thanks, I'll tear it down again and give it a do over. somethings wrong for sure..
good luck
I have same rototiller but it's not working
Please can you send me part number or name. And where I can can order. I also need to change the Cole. Please also send me the part number. I already changed the carburetor and it's still not working
I am not sure if you noticed that this video is 6 years old. It is long gone back to the owner. All you have to to is Google the info. Google this. Electronic coil for 5 hp Briggs. And you will get this

Thank you so much
Actual brand name and date is Belknap Inc. Bluegrass tiller; Aug. 16, 1976
1kmiles Wow Thanks!!
Bruce Pender The manufacturer for Belknap Inc. Bluegrass Tiller (Model # W7-BG387A B) is "White Roto Boss 500 Tiller". Found manual on Ebay. Thought to look up brand names with "W".
Hi
Bruce do you face a face book account
I have question. A neighbor was throwing out an old gas edger Don't know what a pert does. Was thinking of sending you a picture.. model number is gone the way of the dinosaur...

With grace and respect, your videos would be over the top of you did a better production of your videoing. This project needed up close and detail. Great topic and your someone i follow frequently. Just need better video detail on something like this.
Also, what is the lift you are using. I’d love to have one like it.
Noted! I went to check out your videos and notices that there are issues there as well. It sure is a hard thing to do
@@BrucesShop those were taken years ago. No offense was given. Your content is very good and i like to follow you. My comment was pointed at just to focus on the detail. You post way more stuff than i will ever post.
hi very good video but poor lighting 'thanks
Yes This video is more than 6 years old.
start it with "I made this little tool"......
I should Thanks
I wouldn't change the points, for 40 bucks you can buy a electronic magneto. Mine has never started so easy.
Correct. I do the points repair to keep it stock. Like an old car. Everyone has a different thought on that. thank you for the great comment.
I must have seen more of your shoulder than anything else ,for any novice this is not good . Lucky I can understand most of what your did . But never use a drift to tighten ,use a C spanner or peg spanner and just tap it with a hammer ,a novice or anyone else will damage the cutouts or holes to the nuts .
I know. This video is from April 2015. I am now trying my best to stop getting in the way. It is tough doing this by yourself but I am learning. I need more light, more room, more patience. haha
