  • This video addresses problems with a Craftsman Tiller with an LCT (Liquid Combustion Technology) engine and how to determine if the engine is hydrolocked or seized. This engine is an LCT (Liquid Combustion Technology) but this applies to most small engines including Briggs & Stratton and Honda.

Awesome video thank you. The tiller seemed doomed at the beginning but you taught me yet more things about small engines.

My tiller locked up today after I turned it on its side to clear out the tines that were tangled with debris. afterwards the pull rope refused to pull, everything was frozen. Following your advice I pulled the sparkplug and checked it. It was soaked with oil. Went to the starter, gave it a pull and immediately oil squirted out of the sparkplug hole. Obviously hydrolocked. cycled it a few more times, till no more oil, then cleaned up the sparkplug and replaced it. Gave it three pulls and it fired right up. Ran smoky for a few minutes but afterwards no more problem. Thanks a bunch for your video. Earlier I had seen another one that involved having to dismantle everything, carb, exhaust, linkage, shrouds, gas tank, then the cylinder head and then to bust loose the piston with a rubber hammer. Then after oiling the cylinder up and using PV Blaster, put everything back together and then it took a while to run. Glad I didn't have to go through all that. Thanks again

Your video saved my engine at 5:50 with the simple application of the socket wrench on the nut for the flywheel! I'd put the PB Blaster in and tried rotating by hand. After watching you use the socket wrench I tried it on myB&S engine on a pressure washer and VOILA! Thanks for the tip - most videos show using the pull cord or the mower blade. Thanks again!

Thanks : I got a hiderlocked one before but not a Seized up one like yours here - great idea - have been told to use transmission fluid also .

Not gonna lie this was the last thing I assessed during my mini bike rebuild, I thought it was toast and all the money I dumped in. I put some mystery oil in and let it sit then sprayed some pb blaster in and let that sit, took a wrench to the fly wheel and it broke loose, make sure to work it around as some parts might be still frozen. Mystery oil and pb blaster are miracle workers.

Cleaning the rust off the outside of the fly wheel is OK, just not necessary. More importantly the engine has freed up. If stuck before starting then it will be OK. But if running and run out of oil then much inside will be bad.

Great video, do you have any that help diagnose and repair same tiller that isn't seized but just won't start? I've changed the plug. Before winter last year we changed the oil. It does just sit around for several months on end. I rarely use it. It has less than 50 hours on it.

Hi. Thanks for this nice informative video. I have another problem. I Have a push lawn mover with Honda GCV160 engine. The mower has proper amount of oil in it which is two seasons old and not dark so seams ok. I left the mower over winter with premium gas (half tank) in it. Darn, I should have properly winterized it and emptied the tank.
Now I can't pull the string. Nothing is stuck with the blade. I can rotate the blade with hand but it's not rotating easily. But that's I think is normal. If I pull the string so hard, I may be able to pull just a little bit and then it gets stuck. It has a little bit of resistance. I removed the spark plug and then I could pull the rope with no problem. The spark plug seems normal with no sign of oil or any other dirt on it. I read somewhere to add a little bit of penetrating oil and I added a bit of WD40 into the spark plug hole. Let it sit overnight. I tried again in the morning and it's the same thing. I also readjusted the valve clearance but still exactly the same. The valves were too tight compared to the Honda manual. What could be the problem? Could it be because I left it over winter for 7 or 8 months? The problem seems to be that the engine can't release the pressure, or intake valve doesn't open maybe.

Check the valve guide on the exhuast valve on the gcv engines they back out from lack of oil changes and abuse making them run hot

So I sprayed WD-40 in my cylinder on my Toro Weed eater. After a few seconds, i could pull the string again. But I put the spark plug back in and now I can't pull it again. So what do I do now?
