I was thinking starting as a rogue then investing into bard to have a bunch of proficiency perks then go for paladin until I get the smite ability. So being a rogue a dual wielding daggers I can attack 2 times and with smite would it work with each attack or just the main attack? So it could be 4 rogue 4 bard and 4 paladin. Idk lol but it’s going to be worse than dos2 with me not leaving the first island because of me trying different builds.
Eldritch Knights are extremely tanky. They can cast the shield spell as a reaction, which gives them +5 AC for the entire round of combat. This can shift them from getting hit 75% of the time to 5% of the time. At level 7, they can cast blade ward and still attack -- which lets them take half damage from physical damage types. An EK should not be spending their spells attacking, but instead use them as buffing their innate fighter abilities.
I use EK..as a talker..in place of paladin.. I give it 14 or 16 Cha .and friends spell..😂, and using ritual spells like Long Strider, Enhance Leap, Feather Fall, or Fog cloud to stop ranged attackers etc..
Ranger should also be here it has the same HP as a fighter, medium armor and prof with shields so they often match a fighter in AC along with some solid spells. Guess people not used to DnD read Ranger and think ranged combat but that's not the case with DnD. The ranger is a very capable melee fighter and tank after all the ranger is based on Aragorn from Lotr.
Even though Aragorn is called a ranger in the lotr books, his qualities resemble a barbarian mostly; he wears light and rarely medium armor, he rages before each fight and all that while weilding a two handed sword.
I had a playthrough in DOS2 with all melee party, one twohanded and one tank fighters, a dualweid assassin, and a dualweid battlemage, it was so much fun. Would this kind of party work in this game?
The AC system is so different from when I played. Used to be that the lower the armor class the better under AD&D 2e rules (with THACO and all). If you had a -4 AC, you were THE tank. Now, it appears THACO is gone and higher AC is better. Never played past 1991, so it's a bit new for me. I love BG3, but AC still feels weird. Lol.
Best melee frontliner is a wizard! These suckers are way too far from achieving same level of tankiness and melee damage as my Wizard. I feel sorry for martial classes in 5e, and even more so in BG3. 😸
6 bard, 4 paladin, 2 sorc. With all the bonuses to get extra magic convert them to level 4 spell spots you get 7 level 4 slots in total at level 12. Self healing gear with the legendary from act 1.5 insane critical smites and kidna immortal.
I like them all. I even ran a party with a Barbarian (Karlach), a Paladin (Will re-spec), a Fighter (Lae’zel) and a Lore Bard as the spell caster. Very fun!
You don’t need two big melee fighters. But if you want two then do it. Typically a sound party is a charisma character. A utility character. A support character and some kinda of big damage orrrrr crowd control. But you’ll get by with anything.
I'm sure pretty much any party comp will work on the normal difficulty. Although you might need to be creative for some encounters. The only thing that i wouldn't suggest is having a pure melee party, that does not sound like it would be much fun
im very confused ...is afighter - bow wielder possible ? it seems like its not recommendable because the bow does not really benefit from the str atribute ?
Assuming this is exactly like dnd 5e, bows scale with dexterity and there are a few melee weapons that do too. So you could definitely run a dexterity based fighter if you wanted to!
@@thickums5344 but its interestzing the "starsymbol" in the attribute menue with a fighter is str - it says that this stat measures the damage outcome with ALL weapons. if you choose a ranger the "starsymbol" is at dexterity - and it says exactly the same . i think fighters benefit from str even wielding a bow.
You forgot the second(if not the first) most important characteristic... A tanker that doesn't agro is not a tanker... It's just a hard to kill character which the dumb ai in this game will mostly avoid 😒
I'm playing a great weapon fighting, dwarven warrior with eldritch knight and this char is tearing through enemies like nothing. Always the last one standing and winning the fight.
im having an unbelievable amount of trouble with finding something to do for my fourth playthrough. I'm leaning more towards a solo (no party members) hammer dwarf who ONLY uses hammers, no bows or any other types of damage done other than with the hammer. might do durge but not sure just yet. Still dont know which class to pick but probably fighter.
Nah. Just take a Cleric, throw on Spirit Guardians and cast spiritual weapon on the first turn. When you get high enough level you'll get Guardian of Faith. At that point NOTHING will ever reach your other party members ever again and your damage output is pretty chonky.
On balanced difficulty does a barbarian get targeted way more than heavy armor wearers? Paladin seems like more fun, but i would like to be able to soak damage, and if I'll just be ignored by enemies for my squishy friends to be hit, I'm not REALLY tanking much since so many enemies are ranged.
lol you going to need a second tank, bard dont have good hp dice and can only wear up to medium armor ( just used shadow heart priest is the best secondary tank and support)
Yes, it is completely workable without a classic "tank" party member. Especially if one of your spell slingers is focused a bit more on "control" type spells and debuffs. Placement in fights can also have a big impact, but you will learn quick how to approach fights and place your party members. Have fun and experiment! (btw, in early access I played with the above characters quite often, while not having Lae'zel or my MC as a tank character. Lots of fun, and got a bit creative at times. ;) )
Yes in fact having a pure typical "tank support" in dnd 5e is not as great as you would think. It is important to have a beefy character or 2 to be a frontline but that doesn't mean to give up dmg to do just that all the time After all. The best way to protect your team is to kill the assailant. Very much like how the greatest crowd control is death lmao
@@hazamax2139 bear form? Wolf form? Arent those equal to a tank or a good melee? If one thinks about a bear, its many times stronger than any human can even potentially be, many times more durable, its bite can open any knight in a full plate easily. And what I understood, the druid that shapeshifts to a bear as an example, gets bear stats? If a human can reach 18… bears have, well should have at least x4. (But a game, so not as strong maybe?) @@SinSorrowEU In the real world bear beats human every time, but in dnd humans have limitless potential. This has kinda changed in 5e and now the attributes are capped at 20, but even so, 20 would be super human by real life standards. Dnd is far from being a realistic rpg. By level 12, the players are basically the avengers and by level 17 they are fighting gods. Just to drive my point home, the maximum fall damage you can take is 20d6, which averages at 80 hit points. That means that by level 9 a fighter with 14 constitution is probably not dying from falling from orbit. In dnd 5e bears have a strength of 19, which a fighter could achieve by level 6, but a well built fighter could kill a bear much before that.

@johnaut8374 that's just what the game reccomends for standard builds. Dex fighter is very possible, and so is strength ranger.

Because druid is not, base class, oriented to be a frontline fighter.
