Even though I haven't watched X-Men 97 yet, I've got to make 2 points: I wouldn't say Disney is all at fault with Star Wars failures, they just simply follow the fanbase that doesn't even know what it wants at this point and guys like Dave Filoni just became lazy, but they're throwing characters from every media just to be cool among the audience. And I know it's actually good comparison to, but why have you actually brought up Freedom Fighters again? My heartache is coming back realizing Sega makes it clear they don't give a shit about non-game characters and the fanbase also gatekeeps it instead of actually doing something cool with it.
I couldn't resist but to bring up Antoine and Bunnie, because the ccomparison was just right there and no other reviewer would mention it except me. But as far as Disney goes they seem indecisive with Star wars since the best they can do at this point is rely on cameos and nostalgia on top of unnecessary retcons, but that's just me.

Basically it was like: Sonic fans when somebody tries to bring characters back(Freedom Fighters) "No, you can't do that, it will ruin the franchise", TMNT fans when seeing Bebop/Rocksteady with Tokka/Rahzar on IDW comics cover: "That's cool" I tell you, Japanese companies are cursed. While making some of the best content they kill off their own property more willingly than US IPs
