I love this era of Ms. Franklin. But I’m also a church kid at heart, so I can’t help it.

Aretha is THE voice for me! I just love her voice so much!
Me too!!
The most iconic part of that recording was James Cleveland played that piano, her fathers good friend. James Cleveland went on to be named the father of Gospel. He, Rev Franklin and Mattie Moss all ran in circles. The real church era. Im very young but I love that era of church and recordings and choir teachings as well. Remember when Mattie Moss died and Aretha sang at the funeral.
She sang this song paying homage to her mentor Clara Ward. Towards the end you, see Clara stand up and start clapping, enjoying the amazing job Aretha did. I love love love this recording. ❤️❤️❤️
It was a tribute to her dad too, this whole album has songs from her inspirations, there’s a whole video on RUclips that breaks down how everything you need to know about Aretha is on this Album it’s good watch, Black Music Archive
Her daddy used to sing this song all the time.
Have you heard "Wholly Holy", it is a beautiful Marvin Gaye song that Ms. Franklin covered. She was phenomenal ! This clip is so iconic !
my favorite and the side 1 version
I love that old school church clap. It was intentionally syncopated and absolutely essential in our gospel roots.
That Amazing Grace movie is the BEST demonstration of Aretha 's gift and legacy. None can compare. No gossip, ugly rumors, her struggles, etc. Just Aretha ... singing...to the glory of God !!!❤❤❤❤
James Cleveland & Aretha became close when he lived with them for a while. He shared scales and riffs -- taught her alot about playing piano.
The Legendary Aretha Franklin, I cried so much during this concert!!!!
You were there!!? 😮
😮😮😮❤
That choir director was No. 1...and the musicians..organist, bassist. drummer !!! And that choir !! Oh WOW !! I wish we could go back to that kinda old time singing. This movie ministered to my soul.
I watch this recording religiously. It's really the handbook for singers on how to master the art of both technique and rawness. As a huge fan of Sam Cooke (literally the greatest voice to ever exist), I can hear his influence all over her in much of her catalogue, but especially in this recording from the phrasing to the way she lifts off of the end of her notes. And to see Mick Jagger in the back clapping his hands, getting his entire life just makes me feel so proud. It's proof that black music is indeed the blueprint. All of that yelling rockstars like Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, and Joe Cocker did was their attempts to belt and squall like black people. And that's no shade because I'm a fan of all of these artists. But it's just the truth. I'm in such awe of our black legends. Whether they receive all of their flowers or not, what they gave the world can never be duplicated and it'll forever live on. Thanks for reacting to this. Made my soul happy. ❤
The greatest voice to ever exist is Whitney….
@QueenNippyyFann That's your opinion that I really don't care about. I believe the greatest voice to ever exist is Sam Cooke, like I said. Only a mentally ill person would go out of their way to be combative with a complete stranger over an opinion that harms no one.
@@jeannoire5250 The mentally ill one being you for saying sam cooke is the greatest😘
ARETHA HAD AN ANOINTING FROM GOD WHITNEY HAD A GIFT THERES A HUGE DIFFERENCE DIFFERENCE
Your ability to sing Arethas high notes is insane. 😱👏👏
That's right! There is nothing like standing flat-foot and sangin'! Aretha was the master of this!
As SOON as the choir came in the first time, I thought " nope, redo " 🤣🤣 at least they had confidence!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cedric your comment took me OUT!
Hahaha is that what happened??
@@jmlegrairstudio NOPE! 😭
James Cleveland missed a beat at the intro. He almost missed it the second time because you can see the knot in her forehead. Of course it was corrected in the studio. However, the goal is to minimize mistakes.
I was 19 years old when this album came out. Bought it played it to death and still do. Long live the Queen.
I’d honestly never heard this until the funeral, and was in love with Jennifer Holidays rendition. Never knew it was auntie ReRe’s song
I bought this DVD and I just have to pull it out to watch it. My mother had the lp, and I grew up listening to James Cleveland as well. This sound is in my blood🥰🥰🥰
A Queen of Soul vocal analysis?! I love this concert! 😩🙌🏽 You’re right about the preaching aspect of her singing. I believe she said somewhere that she got that by studying her father, Rev. C.L. Franklin, while traveling on the road with him during her youth.
Ah! Love it.
Thanks Jaron, for explaining the Queen’s vocal delivery, I sincerely appreciate it.
my favorite on this live recording. Shoutout to the Rolling Stones in the congregation!
I’m stirred too! Lol And i agree that this era of recordings is sooo amazing. The voice and talent of Aretha are timeless! Love that you are not afraid to time travel for a good vocal! 🙏🏾🙌🏾🥰
Yessss I love a good old recording! I miss it in today's music.
You hit the mark about Aretha's singing being powerful but not really heavy. Jennifer Hudson spoke on how a coach told her as she prepared to record Aretha's songs for the movie that one of the primary differences between them were the approach. "Aretha sings from the head, you sing from your feet" she had to learn to approach it differently to be embody Aretha's songs & I think she did that well.
Ah! Yep!
What does you sing from your feet even mean.
@@imitationcrabmeat6999 earthy and gravely
PLEASE review her singing “Never Grow Old” or “Precious Memories” from this same album/live recording. It’s a beautiful performance.
Aretha Franklin can teach you how to sing. She is the gospel QUEEN For vocal styling. Such a stellar performer. SHE is the preachers daughter . NOW her ballads are classic . J HUDD did her justice. BOTH women are phenomenal women. RESPECT the artist for delivering the messages that ignite our body mind body and spiritual soul. Blessings
This is one of my favorite gospel songs/hymns performed by "Mother". I want to do this version with our First Baptist Church Choir in Brownsville Tennessee. I have stopped in the service to get that key right. This is like goldilocks porridge, not too little or much, just right.🙌
I love your reactions so much because your voice is PERFECT. Love hearing you sing, Jaron
Oh wow! Thank you so much!
Powerful: Aretha Franklin
Heavy: Gladys Knight
Powerful and Heavy: Patti Labelle
There's nothing heavy about Patti's voice .
@@uriyahbonafide4194 you are correct. I made this comment a year ago when I was 14 and had no idea what heavy truly meant.
PATTI SCREAMS SOMETIMES
Whew Aretha🥴 Can’t believe she’s gone.
DITTO. :(
I love this album, specifically this song! No one like Aretha!
As always you’re spot on with the analysis! She definitely has a “preachy” vibe to her vocals that I really never put together until now! Aretha voice is just AMAZING. I love your vids!!!
THANK YOU! ❤️
She the greatest. No contest.
Everyone is her disciple.
That's it.
And I love hearing someone notice all the reasons why
Also, if you watch the documentary you will see a little girl, and that little girl is baby MIKI HOWARD
🌓Appreciate how you analyze each singer. Thanks for sharing.🦋
Thank you so much!
You have a gift and your word placement is exceptional.
That makes Perfect sense... Her voice is Powerful but Heavy... You are Exactly Right Sir and on point as usual 💕 This was Beautiful 🥰
Thank youuuuuu!
Aretha's voice says everything. Really it needs no explanation. It's simply exhilarating.
We certainly dont need as much explaining as we get here ! Not sure who we heard singing more ! The host or Aretha and Lord knows only one of them can sing
Jaron your analysis of Aretha’s vocal style as”narrative”is what I’ve also concluded many years ago.The influence of her preacher father is evident in her approach, phrasing and ad libs within a song. You also pointed out in this video Aretha rarely belts every note in a song. Even tho the power is there it’s in reserve mode. Most singers in their attempt at an Aretha song will over sing it and miss the soulful subtleties of the recordings. Great channel!
Love the video and enjoy watching you sing n analyzes the song n the artists. ❤💯
Love and miss Ms.Aretha Franklin , Rip Queen Of Soul
Your BEST video!
Definitely stirred up too, thank you for breaking down the complex talent of So many artists. As someone who can’t sing, it’s nice to hear ALL the tools, tricks and talent that goes into being a vocalist. I try to watch all of your videos because I’m always impressed and I walk away respecting the art so much more
I’m glad you enjoy!
You Hit That Note Jaron♥️
Haha ;) thank ya!
No one like the Queen! Like you, I grew up hearing this album and Walter Hawkins. Aretha was one of my mother's favorite female artists.
Great analysis as usual! Love that choir and James Cleveland on that piano, my goodness❤
I knew this would be a good one Excellent Review I got me a little Holy Ghost dancing to!!!!
I love it! Dance!
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXCELLENT ANALYSIS OF THIS SONG! NOW, I MUST WATCH & LISTEN TO THE '🙌🏾AMAZING GRACE🙌🏾' AGAIN! **I Love Your Locs💜💚🧡 You made my day!
Thank youuuuuuuuuu! :)
Ok im literally screaming screaming screaming. Where can i start ok. First thank you for doing CLARK SISTERS Jesus is a love song. AAAAMazing, Now you do my absouloutely favorite Aretha from the time she says I'm i cant say what is happening. It is soul complete. I am interested in what voice this is type. To me Faith Evans has a lot of her voice. I also want to ask have you heard her and rev James Cleveland Precious Memories and Then her Never Grow old she does these rolls, riffs and runs that are so unbelievable i dont think i will ever hear again only her and Whitney. Ok i know i went crazy but this is just so AAAAmazing.
I love it! I'm glad you enjoyed the videoooooos!
Oh can you do How I Got Over by Mahalia Jackson the live one? Love to hear your analysis of that performance.
I DO WANT TO DO MAHALIAAAAAA.
@@jmlegrairstudio Please that's one of my favorite performance of her! So simple, but so captivating.
Loved every bit of this!!!! And your locs look so beautiful
Thank youuuuuuuuuu!
His locs are always on point. I notice them too.😍
You are correct live recording sessions can be very stressful but fun. Great analysis sir. I am loving your channel!!!
Thank youuuuuu!
That Amazing Grace film, though flawed, is 1000 times better than any biopic. The Queen was at the peak of her powers.
One of my fave RECORDINGS EVER!!!!!!!! another great video and insight from you ❤❤❤❤
Indeed! And thank you!
This truly blessed me today thank you for this analysis
I'm so glad. Selah. :)
I also love that this version of the song in the video is not even the version that made the album itself. I have seen this documentary 5 times. It never gets old. Her artistry was on full display here.
Josh Thomas , This is the version on the album.... `Wholly Holy` from this session is not the album version though.
ok, Jaron, it quickly became obvious that you did this first off for YOU, not us! lol! i so enjoy watching you enjoy good sangin'!
and how bout Mick Jagger standing and clapping when other folks weren't?
THANK YOU!
Mick Jagger in the back clapping, like he grew up in a Black church 😂. He came there to show love and support for the queen of soul, Love it
British artists like Jagger, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and others showed respect and would always tell people they where inspired by Black music artists in America.
While Whites in America didn't and stole from Black singers and musicians.

At 7:02 You better sing
New to your channel, just found it
beautiful and informative reaction. I need more stuff like that on aretha thank you so much man

Yay! So welcome!
One of my favorite performances of all time! That you for your analysis.
I love this entire album....still selling nearly 50 years later....I remember when this came out....My favorite gospel album of all time.....and really love her delivery on this song too.....awesome critique!!!🥰💜🙏🙌
Thank youuuuu!
@@jmlegrairstudio ...hey Jaron, what city/state are you a vocal coach in....I'm in need of a coach...I'm nearly 60 and still singing....it's a God given gift... but I'd still like to learn....possibly things to help preserve my voice even longer, as God allows me to be here.🥰🙏🙌
Love your Channel it is so refreshing watching your videos and you commentate on all my favourite vocalists and 💯 love this video Aretha Franklin was at home in church love this
Wow.... FINALLY the first Aretha Franklin clip. THIS MADE MY LIFE.

Absolutely wonderful! My dear brother have you done a video on the fabulous Ms. Oleta Adams? She’s at the top of my list. Love all your videos! Thank you so much!🙏🏾❤️❤️
I may have to do her! Thank you!
Popped right on in my suggestions 🙌🏾. And come on then hair we see ya Jaron
Had a gala to go to hours after I recorded this video ;) thank ya!
Absolutely Beautiful
Mike Jagger loved some Aretha. He heard that she was going to go to sing… he was there❤❤❤
One of my Favorite singers....awesome analysis as always..thanks for doing this! not sure if you take request...would love if you could do Anita Baker "You Bring Me Joy"
Thank you so much! I’ll write it down!
Please Jaron could you react to Aretha's franklin amazing Grace live in 1972
Love this video! Aretha was so unbothered and cool as a fan!
Aretha was absolutely untouchable back then! Lawd have mercy.
Yes ģod all time legend she really hit em hard with A Different World too!
I too have noticed the "preach" in her voice.
It comes from listening to her dad.
Women used to faint as he preached
Miki Howard was in the audience, She was the little girl in pigtails.. Her mom is in the choir Singing
I’m gone need u to react to the full live performance now
amazing Aretha
Her song Today I sing the blues IS ALL PREACH!
I am not a vocalist by any stretch but I just realized that the commonality among the most revered singers is that they are powerful without being heavy. Aretha, Whitney, Luther. Powerful singers but also very vocally nimble and light on their feet, so to speak. Not sure if that makes any sense as, like I said earlier, I'm just piecing this together. Interested in (respectful) input. I'm still learning WHY the great singers are great. :) Great video!
Love this! Thank you!
Great analyzing bro
Aretha’s genius. Enjoyed this. Now Daryl Coley ( with the Tri City Singers) would be great as well.
My favorite live recording of all time. I am 32 years old and my parents raised me up on all this music. Ain’t nothing like black church sangin . And I here from tik tok btw. Love your videos. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Nothing like it. It's soul satisfying.
Nothing better!
I believe you have not done the Diva's live incident yet between Aretha and Celine. Oh you betta!
The Musicians of ole respected the craft
Rev. C L Franklin's version ain't no joke either.
There is a video of Shanice doing a live recording of Loving you for Unsung. I’d love to see your take on it.
Yess you talk right about flat foot singing and it was skill
Fantasia uses that jaw movement too... you should analyze one of her performances
She's actually next. ;)
@@jmlegrairstudio yesss!!! Can’t wait!!
@@jmlegrairstudio and Gospel legend Reverend James Moore would be a good one as well in how he sang… flat-footed acrobatic singing… specifically in “Oh How I Love Jesus” ruclips.net/video/ihmePgaVcdg/видео.html
Omg...I didn't see this until just now 💜💜💜😍😍😍💚💚💚
;) got yo covered!
You gotta review Rev. James Moore!
Please make a video on Cissy Houston singing “I do, don’t you” or whatever song you chose
I see 2 people that needs no introduction ❤❤❤
Yes, I luvs me some ReRe. Just discovered your channel. Liked and subscribed.
Thank you!
I wish he would have done a video of her singing "Mary don't weep"
I thoroughly enjoyed this vocal analysis as I do with all your videos. I'd be interested in seeing you do more analysis of Performances from contemporaries of Miss Franklin as well
Thank you so much!!
@@jmlegrairstudio Glad you replied, cuz I actually have someone in mind, Donny Hathaway. The guy who was not only Aretha's label mate, but announced by Jerry Wexler himself as the third genius to come to the label after Ray and Aretha. I'd love for you to do a vocal analysis of his Live Performance of More than you'll ever know off These Songs for you,Live, as well as He ain't Heavy He's my Brother off that very same album. Phenomenal talent like Donny's is a rarity, he didn't get his flowers very much while he was living, but Lord knows he deserves them. So I'd deeply appreciate it if you were to do this.
Bless you my brother I am doubly blessed by your analytical I majored in the music many years ago however I never completed my education there's one favor I'd like for you to do Annalise Dorothy Love Coates because she's a somebody who has blessed my life from 16 to my 70s and she she's literally a force to be reckoned with so if you could do that for me I would greatly appreciate it bless you waiting for more from you
I like what you said about preach her father was a preacher
Can you analyze Jennifer’s performance of Aretha in the Respect Movie
I love music but I know nothing about it. I love learning what it is I’m hearing from a technical standpoint!
Where the youngsters at right now? Hope y’all are listening!
🗣🗣🗣
I remember seeing her in concert and she stop the show because they put the Air conditioner to cold! It was awesome, i guess the cold messes with her voice.
Yes her and Luther too. It must dry out their vocal cords or something similar to that.
You're comparison between heavy, light and powerful, a good example is Jennifer Holiday vs Aretha Franklin. In my humble opinion. Much love from Trinidad ❤️💕
Thank ya!
I’ve been waiting for you to react to Mary J. Blige’s JcPenny Jam performance of Be Without You.
I appreciate your patience! I'm doing my best to get to every request. :)
@@jmlegrairstudio thank you for your work
