This is probably the best, most accurate and realistic RUclips video on bathroom retrofitting. Most videos shown are in new construction, where everything is open, airy, nice and clean. But that’s not most worker’s reality. Chances are your next job will be in a musty, century-old, moldy basement, with poor lighting. Lol... at last, that’s been my experience.
Very impressive. Especially the part where you're hanging on the open floor joists and the purple primer didn't end up on the floor below! BTW I learned the hard way that when you use a small piece of plywood to make a temp platform to never leave an edge unsupported like that. the back doesn't even look like its tacked down
I am glad I found your channel. I am really enjoying this bathroom rebuild you are doing. I own rental properties that I have bought very neglected and have done this exact work on most of them. It is amazing how time consuming it is to completely rebuild something from studs out but it is so rewarding in the end. It is a joy to watch somebody else working just as hard. Nick
Fern co-makes a gasket they call it a doughnut or a hub gasket that your pipe goes into it then goes into that hub and you tap it down with a hammer and it makes an airtight watertight seal
Am I correct in assuming you've already finished this bathroom? I believe I seen another video of yours with the same layout where the tub and drywall were already installed? Also, I'm in awe of your quality craftsmanship and the fact that you're willing to work on this older house. After demo, one might be quick to condemn something like this.. instead you persevere and turn this renovation into a gem. I appreciate your commitment to your craft and teaching others that it can be done and done correctly.
Thanks 😊 and yes it’s finished. I started editing in the middle for some reason 😆 Couple more and I’ll have them in order.. Heres the playlist - ruclips.net/p/PLpPdPsLYPOFxl8WKyX-bAHqxkk0bDB9TJ
I had never done plumbing in my life and I was so chaotic about it. After watching this clip I have the enthusiasm that I can plumb my bathroom. Thanks for this great content. if you could list all the fittings you utilize that would be great.
I’m a novice planning a bathroom remodel and I’m learning about vent plumbing. Did you use different fittings to connect the other vents into your main stack for a specific reason or because they were what you had on hand? Thanks for all your great content!
It was just for alignment purposes. Using a wye for vent matched the outtake fitting 👍 a really great resource and guy that has an excellent course on this is hammerpedia - www.hammerpedia.com/
Fantastic Video and channel!!! I do have a question I am attempting to add a 2nd bathroom to my house by myself. I noticed you said you it didnt need its own roof vent because it was within 5 feet of stack. that is a problem for my idea... i am probably 30 foot away from existing stack. Thank you sir would love a response. I was going to tie into the existing cleanout into my main, and then add another cleanout. then just run it to my second bathroom 30 ft away sink/tub/toilet, much like your style.
Never used the hydraulic cement for filling around the pvc going into the cast but What I have done and learned is using oakum and plumber expoxy. You pack the oakum real well and then pack in expoxy and it works well.
You are a really hard worker. One question, when connecting tub and sinks pipe to the main vertical pipe, why the connecting points are below the toilet’s pipe? Any codes requirements here?
Id like to do the plumbing myself but to pull a permit Id need to be a licensed plumber unless i own the home. Is there some allowance in a remodel to how much plumbing you can redo without needing a permit?
No there are no allowances and if you have watched any of his plumbing videos hes not a plumber. But it looks like he has some knowledge. But if he is then OMG! Aside from just fixing a plumbing fixture like repairing a faucet or something you can do that or if you reside in the house you are working on and it's your registered address you can file for a permit as the homeowner. But as soon as you remove fixtures or alter pipe you need to be a licensed plumber and file for a plumbing permit. Or a fixture replacement card. Hes just getting lucky I guess. One thing in his favor is our county is very short staffed in plumbing inspectors right now so hes probably not gonna get caught.
Terra cotta? You’re kidding right! The right way to fix that is to spend an hour or two with a jackhammer, open up the slab, dig out that old terra cotta and replace with pvc, then backfill with stone and concrete. You’re setting yourself up for headache down the road otherwise. That old pipe is beyond its useful life.
Good job, but I'd recommend two things; do not use wyes on vertical dreinages otherwise you'll fail inspection if required and don't use teflon on pvc threads neither.
Structural integrity of a wall is never a concern of plumbers... When in doubt chop it out!! Specially on an outer wall!! Also insulation is over rated apparently
I would've arranged plumbing fixtures a bit differently, tub along wall with windows, vanity on right side as you walk inside bathroom, and toilet where vanity is but facing door, toilet under window ..
Can we talk about ‘sweat management’? My question to you is if you do anything because of the sweat or if you even notice it anymore? I share the Irish dna that means I sweat (and swear) a lot during remodelling and it took me a while to learn how to manage it. I wear thick/absorbing shirts and drink plenty but also eat plenty salt. In my younger days the end of a day I’d be deficient. I’m of a vintage too that never learnt about hydration so pee the color of copper pipe wasn’t unheard of.
I always get that cast iron out i rent a house years ago and the landlord cut all kinds of corners he didn't replace it and it came down and bent trough the wall to the basement it gad a 1/4" hole in it leaking sewer it to the wall was a ridiculous mess
I’m always concerned about the condition of joists directly under a tub and how much load they can handle. Think of the weight of the metal or cast iron claw foot tub, and then fill it with water. Now jump in and you’re approaching a half-ton of weight on those 2 X 8’s or X 10’s.
Not sure if you will answer this question being 1 yr old. Why didn’t you remove all that old insulation during the demo? I’m currently doing my kitchen and bath, same age house. I removed EVERYTHING! Vacuum and all
Brooo 😭😭 guarantee roots to be in that line within a year or 2, why not just use a double shield band clay to plastic 😂 roots will go right through that foam
That cleanout is wrong. Should be a long Y. What you installed isn’t to code and will hinder the proper routing of a snake should one be needed in the future.

i think the toilet drain needs to be the line at the very bottom of drainege then shower then sink
I would never attempt this myself, but, wow! There is so much involved and you are not only a great worker, but you are truly a great teacher.

Appreciate your content, I've learnt alot
Great video. Thanks for showing the fix you did with the coupling
this looks like a really difficult job. makes the thing I'm doing seem way easier now. thank you!
Man what a luxury working on the 2nd floor. Usually I'm jack hammering up concrete to move plumbing 😢
Nice work!
Very inspiring, nothing like seeing good work ethic in display
Awesome video!

Yikes. Friend of mine lost an eye from cast iron smashing just like this. SAFETY GLASSES!
Cut off the metal pipe without secured .you are the master ❤❤❤

I’ll look into that next time. Epoxy does sound better 👍 thanks 😊
Yes sir but you’ll need the oakum as well. Without the other it won’t work.
Did anyone else cheer when he brought out the hammer to break the cast iron??
LAV's Flood Level RIM? Does not code require the Lav's vent to be 6 inches above minimum the FLR?
Going through roof kind of solves that 😂

NO job is too big for Steve! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Do those jack studs you put the 2" through not need to be doubled up?
Framing video coming up next 👍
Why not tie the sink directly into the stack with a 3x2 tee?
You technically could, but then the toilet would have a wet vent.
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher There is no violation with wet venting a toilet.
@@johnpeters9903 true 👍
next time, dry fit everything before gluing, that way you can avoid @6:15

I have been there and done that, which I will be jack hammering out another one on Tuesday.
Have you seen old PVC? Really is that what you would put in your house? I'm a no hub guy my self.
Good job, but I'd recommend two things; do not use wyes on vertical dreinages otherwise you'll fail inspection if required and don't use teflon on pvc threads neither.
I see you used PVC pipe, would it be acceptable to use ABS pipe?
Did the duct tape over the hole ever work?
EVERYTHING LOOKS GREAT
BUT
I HAVE A QUESTION
IT'S THAT LEGAL , TO DRILL THOSE HOLE'S
FOR THE 2 INCH PIPE
RIGHT BELOW THE WINDOW ????
ANY BODY ??
Structural integrity of a wall is never a concern of plumbers... When in doubt chop it out!! Specially on an outer wall!! Also insulation is over rated apparently
How thin must that concrete slab be around that vent stack that you can break it out with a few whacks of a hammer?
I would've arranged plumbing fixtures a bit differently, tub along wall with windows, vanity on right side as you walk inside bathroom, and toilet where vanity is but facing door, toilet under window ..
i love old dog they juge us so bad 🤣
Helpful 👍

That's quite a comment. If you ever saw how fast Steve works, you would know why he sweats! 😰😓💦
Супер хорошая работа. Я тоже плиточники из Украины город Харьков

Just curious if there are issues drilling through those studs since they're load bearing?
It is more than 40% of the width of stud. But I did add 2x4s to the studs inside 👍
2 x 4 studs are not load bearing. Ever.
@@jessethompson7528 you have got to be kidding. You do know that houses are built out of 2x4s right?
If you have two connecting toilets, and you remove one leaving the hole exposed, could you continue to use the other toilet without a problem?
Plug it to prevent sewer gas from escaping, but yeah, should not affect anything if properly vented 👍

2x10s. What’s crazy is when you get into some of these old homes with a 3-4” mud bed over 2x8. No concern over weight back then 😆
Not sure if you will answer this question being 1 yr old.
Why didn’t you remove all that old insulation during the demo? I’m currently doing my kitchen and bath, same age house. I removed EVERYTHING! Vacuum and all
Oh I did, maybe not during this video, but all new insulation was added 👍
Couldn’t you just of wet vent the lavatory into toilet vent?
Yes 👍
Where is your safety glasses? Watch out for my back door. Breaking my window out.
Ahhh. Eye protection when breaking cast iron
Leave the plumbing to licensed plumbers
Facts , did you see that 45 , 45 instead of using a long sweep 90 lol , idk but in California that would never pass inspection
Nah, they charge too much and it’s not that hard.
Hack job
We’re living in the end times you think people can afford plumbers?
