R.I.P. Peter Steele... He and his bandmates were so extremely underrated. Peter was going through some serious issues when he wrote this. He had been tricked by a girlfriend and a manager to make a fool of himself on Jerry Springer. The show and the manager tried to extort money from him, not to air the show but they did anyway.
Vin, I understood your processing. The old sayings "No Pain, No Gain" and "No risk, No reward"... we can avoid the pain but then we would have missed the opportunity.

I can still put in October Rust and feel the way I did the first time I heard it. They were dark, but they had a wicked sense of humor. Amazing live! Great to their fans. I would love if you reacted to "Green Man" to hear the soft side of them, the pure beauty of their music was stunning. Especially on October Rust. That is def my fave album of theirs.. If you want to know more about Peter Steele, "Nettie" is about his mother and named after her, and "Todd's Ship Gods (Above All Things)" was for his father, anmed after the shipyard where his father worked. Also, a lot of the album "Life Is Killing Me" was pretty deep and emotional, the title track itself and "I Don't Wanna Be Me" among them. There are fun and frivolous options as well with "Angry Inch", which is a cover of a song from the broadway play "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", a cover of the interstitial music from "The Munsters" titled "Thir13teen" and the interestingly titled "IYDKMIGHTKY (Gimme That)" The acronym stands for "If you don't kill me I'm gonna have to kill you". This album is one of the best views into the Big Man, alongside much of the "World Coming Down" and "Dead Again" albums, which was to be their final album before Steele's untimely death.

Type O's my favorite band, so this was great. I got to see them live on their last tour. I saw Kenny and Johnny standing off to the side of the venue during the opining act and walked over to meet them. Kenny gave me a guitar pick. I've got it framed with my ticket stub to that show. They played this song during their set. So powerful seeing it live.

Saw them in a very intimate setting. Small, tiny venue. Met the band outside/ backstage (same thing at this shitty little place). Best band I've ever seen. I've seen them twice, but seeing them at that place, and meeting Peter was fucking awesome. He was really genuine and down to earth, and so were the rest of the band.

This song speaks to my soul. Came out while I was Deployed to Iraq in 2003. When I returned, I discovered my husband's affair, and how he abandoned the marriage. We of course divorced. This song, it aided in my grieving process, helped keep me grounded thru the pain. I've never fallen In Love again, I have loved, but not to that horrid extent of losing part of myself.

As far as Peter steel he lost a number of people to suicide like his father and and ex lover I believe.

    • @gloria7324
      @gloria7324 3 года назад

I think his father died of cancer or something, he had a prolonged sickness towards the end. Peter couldn't properly mourn, even visit his grave as it was too much for him to bear at the time. Several of his elderly relatives passed away in a short time. His mother was also in poor health and naturally he was terrified of losing her too. As for ex's, several cheated on him and he took it very hard. He tried to kill himself in his early 20s over it, and then a later 10-yr relationship ended badly and left him devasted.

Me and my friends used to see Type O in Philly in the late 90's early 2000's. They used to do a Halloween show at The Torc in Philly. It was a freak fest in a good way. He would drink from big bottle of red wine on stage. The show mixed goth vibes, Brooklyn NY humor, raw emotion, beauty, and pain all in one show. It was something to witness. They would toilet paper the venue, from the stage for mischief night/Halloween. One year they bought egg rolls from the Chinese restaurant next door and through them out to the crowd. Such good memories. Dive deep into their music and Peter Steele. There is an ocean to explore. R.I.P. Green Man.

I love you guys did this song.. It surprised me.
Couple of questions, (incase you didn't realize, Type O is my favorite band of all time)
The line "I don't need love" I never took literally. The whole song I took as an immediate emotional reaction the way humans do. Emotion is not a thought out complexity, just as music. It is an uncompromising inevitability. One feels the way they feel because that is how they feel type of a scenario. I read it more as though The subject is telling them self they don't need love trying to convince themselves of it rather then making the general statement. The repetition of the line through several stages of emotion amplifies that for me. I don't believe this song is about losing someone, I believe it is an exploration of the "Id's" relationship with loss in general. Not Petes personal point of view. By this time, he had already found faith in his life again, so the "Trapped between 2 Black Entities" line was not expressly his personal viewpoint, but possibly a point of view in the past, or that of someone in a very dark place in their lives but a non specific scenario.
41:11 - Ya ALMOST talked about the musicianship of the group on the song! I like to tell people they are like the bastard lovechild of Black Sabbath, The Beatles, and the Ramones.
42:56 - If you made it this far in the comment, play the song and ask the child what they think about the message. I maybe a different case, but I understood it was not to be taken viscerally and not literally. I guess the whole point of the song is to exclaim how powerful these emotions can be, but they are a bandaid to deeper truths. The last outcry of the song exemplifies the incredulousness of the knee-jerk emotion only to fade out in a stanza unfinished. In my opinion, that is the beauty of the group. At times their music is so multifaceted, even they may not be able to convey the exact meaning. But they loved burying i in sarcasm.
PS. I did really appreciate you filming this on a rainy evening. I am sure Pete would have approved also.
Keep up the good work guys!

This band is awesome! I am glad you’re starting to enjoy them. Pete Steele is the only bassist I’ve ever seen rip the strings right off the bass like they were made of spaghetti. I’ve only watched online their live shows but all were good. Whatever you do, be cautious on looking up any information on him, you might come across some nakedness. Some things you can’t unsee. :(
As for emo, it’s short for emotional. Yes, typically “emo” is recognized from youth but we are all emo in some way or another.
Goth is a little different. There is Goth, the Germanic people from the 3-5th centuries. You have the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. There’s Gothic paganism (most became Arian Christians). Lots of history behind Goth. Goth music, formed in the 80’s from punk. I’m not too familiar with how the punks adopted Goth but I do know there is a very big different between the music and the actual lifestyle adopted from centuries ago.
Edit: I forgot to mention the Goth bible called Wulfila Bible. Goth has its own language. It’s Germanic in origin I believe.

Goth is a term that denoted vulgarity. That is all modern "goths" have in common with the goths of old. There's no other common denominator than that, no historical connection. Goth rock came from Postpunk that came from Pop and Punk. Other goth genres evolved later, such a "goth metal" that was pioneered by Paradise Lost (and independently followed by Type O).
"Emo" as a popular genre came from Emotional Hardcore Punk, a genre that evolved in the late 90's.
