Peter Steele was a very large man in lost of ways. Almost 7 foot tall. He had an incredible sense of humor. Brought up Catholic and very well read. He was a better bass player and songwriter than he ever gave himself credit for. Eventually his big heart gave out. He had a previous addiction to Methamphetamines but had been away from it for several years. Doctors say his heart attack may have been caused by pain medication he was prescribed. He died in much the same way Prince did.

Reacting to some of your insightful commentary, I attended a church with a friend an the Minister looked exactly like a stereotypical televangelist. There was little doubt that he had convictions in his beliefs. About halfway through his sermon, after a cool song, he returns to his favorite spot (center stage) and proclaimed "Blondes in mini-skirts are Tools of the Devil!". I could barely contain my laughter. His blonde wife (who was wearing a long dress) had a look of shock on her face and as I looked around the pews other women there had similar looks and the guys were looking around like "uh, oh!", I could contain myself no longer. I walked out with my hands on my face trying to contain my laughter. I never went back and my friend stopped going there within the year.

He wasn't addicted meth ffs... He was a chronic alcoholic and coke addict. And I have no idea where you got that his death was caused by pain medication. It was caused by the hard lifestyle he lived, and how big he was probably played a factor as well.

I don't think you guys "get it". Type O is an amazing band and Peter was a greatly under appreciated artist. He was truly a tortured soul that struggled with his faith, God, drugs, lust, women the whole bit. He wrote about it, humorously and seriously. His voice was so powerful and sometimes chilling. Peter's music and lyrics had the amazing ability to take you out of the place you were in whether it was traffic, a crappy day at the office, a break-up, whatever and put you somewhere completely different. This place was usually dark and not of this world. What an amazing gift! Understand some people embrace the darkness that is given them and your so called "vampire" guy was one of them.
From the panes a green mist swirls
Is it a shadow of reflection?
This apparition in moon beams bathed
A voice like wind through trees beckons
Cool rain on hot summer stone
    The odor fills my presence
Of freshly dug grave and death and night
    These things are her essence
    Nocturnal mistress, spirit lover
Your mouth of wine and wooksmoke taste
My goddess of the violet twilight
    You are lust incarnate
In the sweat of my bed
The eastern sky hints of dawning
Alone and awake but exhausted I lie

I think we have to accept if you listen to this song without knowing anything about the band, about Peter Steele, then if you are Christian you are going to have a reaction just like this. It takes a little bit more lateral thought to look deeper before feeling faith is being insulted or worse. • @Logan-ed4pu

I love Type O Negative! Definitely a type of metal that infused elements of punk, and post punk goth. Nowadays, it's considered gothic metal. I wouldn't say industrial, like Fear Factory would be. Peter Steele's (RIP) lyrical ability was on it's own level, and you did a good job picking that up. His way of playing with words was just genius. His bass guitar tone was completely unique as well. In an interview during the 90's, Peter Steele stated he got the idea for the song from a number of women who had mentioned to him that they thought Jesus Christ "was a babe". At the same yes, I do believe he puts himself in that light, because he was an extremely attractive guy (even posed in Playgirl) in his prime, and he got to know a lot of groupies. Type O Negative had a lot of deeply erotic music in many different senses. "Love You to Death" is my favorite love song. They had many songs that really got me through a lot of tough times, because they were willing to delve deep into how a person feels, but being a man, acknowledging your feelings can be a taboo. Especially if you were nursing a broken heart, or dealing with the death of a loved one. Their music is intelligently written with multiple parts, and each one telling a whole story.
At the same time, they were also a very sarcastic band that would be the first to poke fun at themselves, and write overly ridiculous songs as well. They had a song that was called "Kill All the White People," yet they were clearly white. They did a fake live album that had "audience members" booing and screaming "You Suck" in between songs. "Black No. 1" was specifically poking fun at the Gothic subculture and those who took it WAY too seriously. They covered a song that was about a botched sex change. They'd also refer to themselves as "The Drab Four," which is an obvious play at both themselves and The Beatles. Type O Negative was a band you had to take with a pound or twelve of salt, and not read too much into.
As for religion, during the 90s, Peter Steele was an atheist who grew up in an extremely strict Roman Catholic household. As we all know, extremely strict situations tend to lead to extreme rebellion. Shortly before his death in 2010, he had converted back. This band made me laugh, cry, smile, and think all at the same time, and there will never be another Peter Steele.

Like your video, save for where you do the satanist promotion. Pretending to an acceptable option and not speaking straight out against such vile blasphemous practice of worshipping the enemy of God. Missed opportunity and an oversight, skinny. This being said, wasn’t Goth, but was huge fan of O-, Peter’s talent as a musician, lyricist, and composer simply phenomenal. He was depicting the reality of our fallen culture, not representing himself, anymore than as an arch type. He was simply too deep to remain in any one of those particularly, but this is the one which spells success in the industry. He brings attention to the spiritual ramifications and complexities of today’s sexuality, brilliant mind, the music without even words stands alone, but the voice could say anything and my ears would itch to hear. God died for him too. Confident we will see him in Paradise.

Peter Steele was raised Catholic and a lot of his songs were about struggles with faith and the inherent contradictions of that faith. This is one of those songs. I feel like your initial assessment of Type O before you listened to them was tempered with a bit of a confirmation bias when you listened to this track. They are not a "depressed" band, though may of their songs have that element, it's usually tempered with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor as well. Watch the video for "I Dn't Wanna Be Me."

    • @TraphouseSlutbunny
      @TraphouseSlutbunny 6 лет назад +16

Also, the "Jesus Christ looks like me" lyric is basically an allusion to the idea that there is god in all of us and that her crisis of faith is more about the feeling of elation that people see they feel from religion and equating it to sex. The pleasure of sex and the pleasure that many claim to derive from religion are one and the same to this woman in her time of crisis/desire.

I would suggest "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" or "I Don't Wanna Be Me" or "In Praise of Bacchus." They have so many tracks that deal with so many other things. "Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Infidelity" is another great track, but one that is a hard listen. "Be My Druidess" or "Black No. 1"...it's hard to pick one.

I always thought of the song as the inner struggle of the woman...the pull of her faith, against that of the flesh. She see's him as her "God" or "savior" figure, but I don't think that he puts himself in that role. The one line that leads me to think this is, ironically, the very opening where you were like "I knew it...dracula voice" where the singer starts with "Forgive her, for she knows not what she does..." This leads me to think that this song is solely about her struggle, and not himself forcing himself into that role.

Actually he was singing about one of his ex girlfriends. she was a catholic and had this inner struggle with her sexual needs and what is appropiate in her religion
And Peter just ironically states at the end of the song that it is okay for her to let her sexually desire out, because he looks like jesus

    • @BRO77TX
      @BRO77TX 3 года назад +1

Very astute and articulate observation. I honestly didn’t know how to handle this song with my faith in Jesus. 9.99 times out of 10 when a artist outside of the Gospel genre takes on the subject of religion, it’s usually not going to be flattering at all. However, what Peter is writing about through his experience with this ex girlfriend is not wrong. We are sinners and sin separates us from God. From what I gathered in the song is that she looked at him as her “savior” for unleashing her sexual desires. So, the line “Jesus looks like me” has a double meaning in that sense but also that mankind was created in the image of God/Jesus.
So, that’s my interpretation of the song. But, you are right in your analysis Bryan!! 😊

    • @j9andphoenix
      @j9andphoenix 3 года назад +1

People who critique these days do so on a song - without knowing too much more - Pete for example being bass baritone - his voice could rumble - in a mic with that sort of intimacy - it isn't doing 'Dracula' at all. Unfortunately, Pete did not have creative control over the clip - he speaks about it in an interview you can find here - Roadrunner did not serve them well. And I agree with your interpretation of the song. She is struggling with her natural urges.

@@debrawilliams1287 I think you're right. Sori sounds like she's too conservative to truly understand the double meanings here. I suspect she grew up not being allowed to feel and embrace her sexuality and her urges, etc., so the idea that someone would write about tempting a Christian girl/woman by using religious imagery and that she would attach a Christ-like obsession to the man in question (Sori admits this in the discussion) is both familiar but 'verboten' to her, and it bothers her (Sori).

The vocalist Peter Steele (R.I.P.) was a giant but from what I’ve always heard, he was a jokester. In this song, the woman is full of sexual tension because as a Christian woman, her desires are seen as a sin. She’s pent up but her lust (desire between her thighs that due to her lack of sex, is driving her mad) has confused her and she actually starts to lust for Jesus. She begins to desire him. She knows she needs to ‘get some’ here on earth or she may continue to lust after Jesus and burn in hell for it. He’s the only man in her life. She’s confused. So, along comes Mr. Steele. He sees her plight and just lets her know, “ Hey, there’s no way you can have intercourse with a God. But I’m here and I’ll help you out. Let’s do it. And I’m the man for the job because if you think about it, Jesus looks like me so it’s probably as close as you’ll get.’
He probably would have said ‘i look like Jesus ‘ but rhythmically and melodically for what he wanted, that doesn’t really work for that piece of music.
If you’ve heard more Typo songs and heard about Peter Steele the man, it becomes apparent that he was snickering in his mind while he sang this. The band was definitely into shock value. They’re albums are full of funny, ironic lines along with the haunting, beautiful and cryptic lines. They were an important band in metal and their other songs have a lot to offer. They are worth listening to.

He was funny. In another song, he sings, “My girlfriend’s girlfriend, she looks like me.” It’s a weird and funny line because if you think about it, does his girlfriend desire her girlfriend because she looks like him or does she hook up with him because he looks like her? This would be weird to contemplate in real life if one found themselves in that situation. It would screw with a guys ego. Either the girlfriend’s girlfriend looks really tough and manly or he looks feminine. That sucks to not know the reason why1

In April 2007, Steele revealed that he began identifying himself as Roman Catholic in recent years, after decades of self-professed atheism. In an interview with Decibel magazine, Steele explained:
"There are no atheists in foxholes, they say, and I was a foxhole atheist for a long time. But after going through a midlife crisis and having many things change very quickly, it made me realize my mortality. And when you start to think about death, you start to think about what's after it. And then you start hoping there is a God. For me, it's a frightening thought to go nowhere. I also can't believe that people like Stalin and Hitler are gonna go to the same place as Mother Teresa."

I've been a huge Type O fan since the 90's. This was probably the most thought out commentary/analysis of this song I have seen. You elaborated the topic/theme of the song and made it more accessible to a non-christian/catholic listener.
Speaking of non-christian, it would be super interesting to see you two react to Skyforger by Amorphis. (Or pretty much any song by that band - my current favorites include "Silent Waters", "House of Sleep", "Sacrifice" and "You I Need".) Greetings from Finland!

Peter Steele in his last few years of becoming a clean man had reconciled with his Catholic past. There are several references to it on their last album Dead Again. He seemed like a tortured soul that could not cope with a lot of negativity in this world. Losing his parents and other loved ones had a massive impact on him. Songs such as Nettie (about his mother), Red Water, Todd's Ship Gods (about his father) were never even played live. I don't believe that there was any true evil in this extraordinary yet beautiful soul.

I absolutely love Type o. (and I'm not a goth... I'm pure metalhead) And I love all their stuff but I feel kinda mad that you did this cause the best songs are the personal ones you should've checked "the profits of doom", "World Coming down" or "White Slavery"(Wich is about his cocain adiction and not about what you might have thought xD) Those super popular Goth songs are still really good but as a top notch fan I gotta say their best work is the more Doomier Style albums, Punkier/Thrashier Albums like "World coming down" or "Dead Again"

Type O Negative was always meant as a platform for the late Peter Steele (Lead vocals/bass) to express his emotions; what he called "sonic therapy." Dark, yes, but always relatable on some level. Vin, you mentioned the song "Everyone I Love is Dead," which Steele wrote after several of his family and friends had passed. Another great video, guys!

According to an interview, the song is basically making fun of the notion that nuns are married to Christ. Peter had some issues with the more supernatural elements of Christianity, so he made light of it. The "medium well" line is most likely intentionally cringy, cuz Type O Negative has plenty of those tongue in cheek lines.
Also, the one thing you have to realize is that plenty of their songs are basically tongue in cheek. Sure, they may have something to say, but they also joke about the subject while doing so.
Also, yeah no interviews, mostly because he's dead and according to my knowledge he did become a Christian in his later years. So, reserve judgement maybe?

False. The song is about a woman who lusts after Jesus. And Peter Steele is Jesus. The entire point of Type O is to make you scratch your head. You just happened to come across their song poking fun at christians, as they do many other topics. Peter Steele was a very kind and humble human.

I think this is the 4th video I've watched now and you seem to be pretty woke on Christianity. So I was raised in evangelical/pentecostal churches in the south and left the faith at 22. In my 30's I moved more into the occult and approaching 40 in a few weeks I now would call myself a Satanist. Interestingly enough I find myself at a crossroads where I have rediscovered Christianity through the lens of religion and mysticism rather than through insane fundamentalist literalism, and it's refreshing. At any rate, I say all of this to extend an invitation: If you have any questions about these bands and/or these topics, I'd be glad to answer them or direct you to good places to get ones I can't provide. It's a good thing, what you're doing. We need more people to be more self aware and also to be able to reasonably engage with "the other side" (whatever that may be) in good faith, and I'd be glad to help.
Type O Negative is all about tongue in cheek bullshittery. If you listen to them more you'll like them. Genres be damned, they might be the greatest American rock band ever. But certainly of my generation.

Peter Steele was a very intelligent person. But you also have to note that he would write songs to intentionally offend people. He believed that if rock music did not offend some people, then it wasn't rock'n roll. Also, he wasn't goth, his music is within the category of metal. Gothic Metal, Doom Metal... is still metal. Goth is separate from Metal.
That being said, I'm a goth, and I admire Peter Steele, but his music is not my cup of tea. I prefer The Cure, Bauhaus, and Sisters of Mercy. I also don't paint my face in public, unless I'm going out to a goth-centric event. And then when I do it's very minimal and simple (think Robert Smith). And another point, I'm also a christian who loves the Lord, Jesus. I'm also not living my life depressed or hating life or people around me. the whole stereotype of goths being depressed and being antisocial is just wrong. It needs to stop. People who are goth tend to be some of the most caring and sensitive people you could meet. Also, goths are not just teens. There are adults of all ages who are goth. It's not a phase.

Vin laying the Knowledge DOWN!! Well said you nailed it. I saw Type O live back in 94 I think with Pantera. Peter Steele the singer is a Enormous Man..I mean like almost 7 foot tall. It was one of the most chilling live bands I have seen. He Just stood front and center in his rock star stance head down just slammin on the bass and singing and growling into a low hung mic, never moving or looking up just his arms and fingers on the bass. It was just creepy af but soo cool at the same time. They were basically a nobody at the time. One of my favorite shows of all time. Pantera was off the chain as well but I will never forget that Type O performance.

I wonder how you guys would react to Depeach Mode "Blasphemous Rumors" The song is about a real life girl who tried to kill herself at 16. She lived through it. During that time she found the lord. Two years later she gets hit by a car and ends up on a life support machine. The mother decides to pull the plug. In the chorus the singer asks if god has a sick sense of humor for saving the girl from suicide and she found god after..only to be hit by a car and die two years later

If you ever go back to Type O, which I do believe you should, you need to try either "I don't wanna be me" or "Everything dies" - they both incorporate much of Pete's feeling and lyricism in a FAR better way their more edgy (for the lack of a better word) and erotic songs do.
They were and are a very polarising band but they really do have some stuff that's worth listening to that's much less controversial than this, "my girlfriend's girlfriend", "love you to death", etc, do. I suppose that's partly why you got recommended this song, plus it's arguably their most popular one, but still - they're not just a gimmick, I promise.

So let's break this down. The singer, Peter Steele (R.I.P.), was a true baritone. Hence the deep voice, he couldn't not do it, and it adds perfectly to the music. Dude was an ABSOLUTE genius. Dude was also 6ft +. Like 6ft6 or something like that. However, this is not their best song. Whoever suggested this song probably just wanted to get a reaction out of you. Their best known song is "black number 1"
