Saw bauhaus twice in one week at the Lyceum London in 1982. I was 19. (I'm 57 now!) Wrote to Peter shortly afterwards and he replied with full letter, photos etc. Nice guy who made the effort
I don’t remember the blood moon but there was an eclipse that night when Morrissey played. Bauhaus definitely was the highlight for me! I’ll never forget this epic performance. It brought me to tears.
I was there, and it was a stunning experience to see my favorite band from the 80’s play their iconic song so brilliantly under a blood moon eclipse. It was beyond magical, it was transcendent 🌒💫
It's not a strenuous song to sing so it's just a choice on his part. Many old acts feel the need to tinker with the delivery... none of that bullshit here. Don't meddle with perfection, give the people what they want.
Peter Murphy is lucky in that he's got that kind of baritone voice that actually improves with age up to a point. If he takes care of himself he could do this for another decade. Best band ever!
I stumbled on 'The Hunger' for the first time ever a week ago and that opening scene blew me away. One of the baddest opening scene ever and 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' is one of the baddest jams to boot.
I clicked this expecting it to be an awful live performance considering how old Peter Murphy is, his voice is literally the same as the studio version decades ago.. it's really incredible.
@@keirfarnum6811 I thought of a great port-manteau: atmospherical! Something which is atmospheric AND spherical at the same time! Like the music of Bauhaus, which is both atmospheric and, as the lady points out, spherical. Not a plane on the surface of this band, boy. No tangent line parallel to another tangent line on Bauhaus. Must be why I like 'em so much.
I was there too and this was electrifying in person. When I say every person there was just transfixed and singing along. They cast a spell on 20,000 people. Goosebumps.
I remember, as a teenager, my cousin gave me a Bauhaus t-shirt which i wore with absolute pride.. for a month.. before actually hearing the band!! Became a permanent fan from then on!! Understand, i was poor.. so my only exposure was nicking music off alternative radio stations... which didnt exist in S.Africa in the late 80s
The underrated movie with Catherine Deneuve David Bowie ans Susan Sarandon. This song is played at the opening scene in a discotheque. 1980's Gothic, it left an impression.
I was there both nights and it was even better in person. What you don't see are the big screens they had, which had black and white video of the band which made them even more spooky looking with the lighting. It was amazing. Especially the second night with the lunar eclipse happening. It was a peak goth moment.
Peter Murphy just gets more amazing the older he gets. It wouldn't surprise me if he were to die of old age, then come back undead himself, perform, and show he's still got his voice, his talent, and his stage presence.
Peter Murphy still sings this so Beautifully, & Eloquently; he is SO Amazing!! I have adored this song for many years, & had a crush on all of them!! 🤗😍💓❤️🔥
Last saw them in the early 2000's at the Wiltern. Glad they're still sounding so good. Sad I missed this, but no longer live in L.A. I did hear all of the Elder Goths were there to represent! Awesome!
I was there, right in the middle of the front section behind the vip cage. It was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen and that moment was electric. My phone died during She’s In Parties so I’m thrilled there are other good videos of this.
I swear they have some other worldly powers . In '06. I seen them open for nine inch nails and when this song came on we clear. Sunny day turned into a dark lightning hell that went perfectly to the tune of the song.
damn it i wanted to go so bad. my?bucket list band . im 54 and still love their music. found them in junior high , die hard fan dvd, albums CD and t shirts too just fits me perfectly.nothing like them. true goth til i die.
The first proper Goth single in my view (although other bands had gone down the dark path previously)....I had the 12" single 40 years ago.....Alas, I had to sell it and all my other LP's, 12" and 7" vinyl (lots of it including Bauhaus) during a severe bit of UK unemployment 9 years ago.....Saying that, I've got cd's and downloads of most of it now...
Alot of us had ro do the same about that time..i remember selling prized lps at amoeba in hollywood with a sick feeling in my gut that i would regret it one day.. but i still have my signed skies gone out lp (signed at vinyl fetish hollywood..)
Yep, I remember when vinyl went out of fashion and I had a pretty comprehensive Bauhaus collection; picture discs, demo discs and the works and sold the lot. I do still have a two volume DVD set of their best stuff that came in a collector's box. Still gets a listen while driving.
Yeah there were a lot of improper Goth singles before that like Buddy Paradise's "Chimney Ghoul" as well as Vincent de Saxon's "Coffin Munch" (actually an EP) and Toxteth Blue. They had a 45 called "Endless Twangle" if you have a copy of any of these please HMU
They're so good live. The first time I saw them live I was totally surprised. I had figured a lot of their sound was studio tricks, but I was wrong. A great show to see if you have the chance.
One night in 1981, I pulled up outside my aunt and uncle's house in Belfast in my battered old car, which was costing every penny of my student grant to run. John Peel's show was on the radio, and as I prepared to switch off the ignition, he put on "Nerves" from "In the Flat Field". I didn't move until the last note of that song faded away. Transfixed. Some band.
double treat, bought Bauhaus' record, used, 3 decades ago at Poo Bah Records when I lived in Pasadena. Left all my records behind when I moved to Florida . This was awesome!
I can almost hear Murphy explaining to his doctor; well, Doc, I disappear from the stage toward the end of "In The Flat Field," to prepare for the intro to "Bela…", you know I have to hang inverted for about 11 minutes. Doc: wait! What?! Why? Murphy: "Dude, vampire's gotta vamp." Doc: "sure, but what is that doing to your brain with your heart pumping all that blood uphill to your feet and all?" Murphy: "You're talking as if I'm 190 years old, Doc, I'm still a young man, just turned 127 in October." Doc just stares at Murphy as he rises from the exam table, buttoning his vest. "Okay then…"
Hace ya varios años el vampiro mayor nos visitó en la CDMX. Allí, con sólo un violinista, un baterista y una guitarra nos transportó por la genialidad de su mundo y nos alucinamos a lo bestia. Old age actually suits these guys. It makes them seem more vampiric and cadaverous, which really enhances the aesthetic!
I can only hope to be called vampiric and cadaverous in my old age.

Aye, I was also lucky to see Bauhaus live. You never forget them.
That’s sooo cool 😎 man. Thank you 🙏 for sharing
Really cool
I can imagine how enthusiastic your letter was... they were a force of nature.
This is the greatest mix of Goth, reggae dub and a curious bassanova beat. Bauhaus is dark perfection.

I was there and it wasn’t lost on me that a blood moon rose that night whilst Bauhaus was performing this song
Bauhaus has EXQUISITE timing
Also your use of the word whilst is exquisitely timed

It was a blood moon eclipse, and a dream come true to see Bauhaus perform Bela Lugosi’s Dead under it 🌒

This was unreal in person! And they performed with the blood moon on Sunday! It was perfect and spooky
Awesome…👍
awww that would have been great
Epic
I was there too and their performance under the moon was unforgettable. I'll always treasure that memory.

They were the main reason I was there and seeing them was like having an out of body experience. I still think about their performance!!!
They sound incredible and Peter looks SO GOOD!!! I haven't seen him look that good in a long time
