Hey, ex BL dev here. I wasn't in the company when B44 was released, but thanks for playing it all the same! Basically the reason it died was that the studio wasn't expecting the popularity on release. Through naivety and inexperience, the net code crashed the server when too many people tried to join at once, plus the anti-cheat logic was quite... 'easy to overcome' 🤣. Most of these issues were fixed after a week or two but it never really recovered from the negative sentiment. It was a massive learning experience for the studio. Once it hit open early access the player base were so toxic to newcomers learning how to play that many new players left and never played again. If your player base starts toxic it's really difficult to build a loyal base beyond the elite few. It was doomed from early access.

it's crazy that I actually remember the first three games as well as I do, but I didn't play them since I'm not an FPS fan. NeoTokyo obviously is something everyone should remember since there weren't a lot of "cyberpunk" options back then. hell, wikipedia still had a dedicated "cyberpunk" topic page at the time (until the topic got over-flooded at the end of the 2010s).

Why not make video about good and popular games that lost vast amount of players, for instance: Titanfall 2, The escapist 1/2, Worms, TABG, Mordhau and many more?
I have fond memories of playing and finding many friends in regiments in battlegrounds 2 and playing line battles against other regiments, such good times and the way I got into mount and blade Napoleonic wars and hold fast 😊
You should check out Battle for Middle earth (BFME). It's a Lord of the Rings rts game with a pretty fun campaign. There is also a small multiplayer community, but playing multiplayer requires some effort because EA shut the servers down. The game was created by EA, but because they didn't have the rights to make a Lord of the Rings game they had to shut it down. But the community has managed to make it possible to download the game online for free. They even made their own updates. I'm not sure if you even like rts games, but the game is one of my favourites, and I would like to see you check it out. Love the content!
I just appreciate the Veterans that still play these dead games or any dead games. They love it and even though its not what it used to be they still play on because they enjoy the game they have a certain nostalgia and feeling that seems to make them not let go of the game
oh my god, the fact that you actually played AVA is such a nostalgia trips. AVA is really, really big in SEA and NA back then since F2P games used to be filled with only FPS games made by Korean and pretty much part of the big fives ( AVA, Counter Strike Online , Point Blank, Special Forces 2 and Blacksquad ). you should try those games since those were still exist but with such a small communites
i used to play battle grounds 3 around the time it came out. it was always the same people whom you played with. the voice chats were one of the reasons i played it so much. people were hilarious. im suprised to see it still running.
The story of Battalion is really sad. It had so much potential, and when I realized they released a free to play version I got really excited... until I played it and read into the story. What a terrible way to handle a game.
Double Action: Boogaloo is an absolute masterpiece. Any game where you can do some Max Payne/John Woo diving and shooting action, especially in multiplayer, is peak gaming.
I never got a refund on battalion 1944, Probably to late now. Shame it died, can anyone even say why? Especially with it being free maybe it could be revived, if people make it known that this great free game exists. Hard to go wrong with free, it's worth a try guns.
Oh shit, I actually "played" neotokyo once years ago after randomly finding it on steam. Fucked around on a random map a bit but left since I couldn't find anyone.
It's awesome to see you found battlegrounds III. I've been playing the game for a number of weeks and time flies when I play it. The main public server is usually packed with about 20+ people around noon here in the US. I sometimes run into regulars who play the game far more than me. I often hop on to play "a game or two" and multiple hours go by.
NGL watching this video reminded me of playing a game called APB: Reloaded, the game that I will never forget, the in-depth character creation, making some new in-game friends and goofing around, I will never forget that time.
I’m 36 and I most definitely played the first two games . Battlegrounds use to be popping back when it was a hl2 mod and then that other game that’s called something else now use to be called the specialist and it was based off the matrix . It was so much fun, online gaming was an absolute blast back then .
I've recently started watching your video, and I think this is probably one of the most wholesome channels on YT. Most of the games I've never played but I enjoy seeing people enjoy your content and enjoy you looking at their favourite games. For me the game I started out with was probably dirty Bomb😅those we're fun times Thank you Rye for shedding some light on those forgotten games
Okay...finding you randomly was a YT blessing. I know I'm gonna watch all the videos within two days and cry. But I'm very glad. You're entertaining sir and have unique channel.
Brings back memories... Used to play Double Action Bugaloo alot. Servers where always full. Met some great people there. I guess it's time to visit my old game again ❤
man double action boogaloo was actually awesome back when it had players, the car chases were some of the most intense chaotic experiences ive ever had in a game
Double Action Boogaloo was one of the first PC games I ever played. I had no money at the time and it was the begining of how I learned how to use mouse and Keyboard for shooter games. Many fond memories from back then. If I had to recommend a dead FPS game, I would say my favorite is "Sectors Edge". The servers are officially closing next month, but the small community is going to keep it alive by self hosted servers. Definitely the best small game community I have ever been a part of. RIP SE
I remember when FF came out. It was developed as a reponse to the graphics style of TF2, a lot of people were unhappy with the direction valve were taking team fortress. FF is much more of a spiritual successor to TFC than TF2 is.
What I really like about this channel is that you dont just try to make fun of every single thing about these games, you fairly appreciate the good aspects of them and discuss the things that don't work. Many other channels similar to yours make just clowny content resulting in being annoying rather than funny
Wild. I actually remember playing AVA and Double Action: Boogaloo (DAB as everyone called it). I remember playing on a shitty laptop games like those and Scram and pla_toon. All weird games with barely anyone playing but they were a blast to play. I remember in either pla_toon or Scram you could actually shoot grenades on other player's sides and they would explode which I thought was super cool. Me and my friends would just aim for the grenades all the time. This dead games video was the first that brought me back to a nostalgic place. These weird small little dead games are the ones that stick in my mind so vividly. I guess because they can be absurd which, with friends, makes it 10x more hilarious than something that is more "serious" like CS:GO or something, and give you just the freedom to goof around without getting absolutely dunked on by like 30 other players trying to test stuff out with your friends
As a veteran of AVA, the gameplay itself is very good as free to play game, but later on the skin gun and regular gun makes so much difference that basically is paid to win. I almost go pro playing AVA with my friends back in the day
Rye, you might not see this but I appreciate you so much for playing the Temple of Time music from Maplestory at the 3 minute mark. That just made my whole day aside from the video 💙
Thank you for showing Battalion... I loved that game so much, the competitive scene was insane and that's where I've met 2 friends that I still talk to and play with till this day. Old Battalion players will say they miss the game, we all do, but we won't play it anymore because it's dead...
Seeing you play Double Action: Boogaloo brings back good memories. I had so much fun playing that as a kid back in 2014/2015 on my laptop at 20 fps lol. It's a shame that the game is dead now but it's not hard to see why when the game has barely changed since I last played it nearly a decade ago.
Cool video, I enjoyed the jank you went through. As someone who has played a few of these games, it was awesome to see someone else give them a bash haha
As a new sub I just want to suggest finding a consistent naming convention for this series. I feel like I see the same title with the tiniest change over and over. I know it's not the easiest ask but it'd be a nice touch. Cheers and great work!
You missed some things in Battle Grounds 3. They have realistic civil war era musket battles with a commander and your platoon standing in rows firing at the other side. It's been a few years since I've played, but from what I remember, each team would spawn on opposite sides of a large map and would have to find each other, then the shooting begins. There were set times for the community to join the server and host one of these battles. There was also another game mode that had ship warfare. It was definitely a lot broader than the experience that was shown here.
I stumbled upon your channel about 2 weeks ago and I've been bingeing your videos ever since, I can't get enough. Your channel is gonna go far with the awesome content!
I wish you could have seen what battlegrounds 1 and 2 were like. Massive regiments (clans) filled with dozens of history nerds that somehow got together and organized into cohesive line battles. Imagine revolutionary and napoleonic era style lines of 20 vs 20 with a commander on each team (sometimes two) calling movement, advance, about face, make ready, take aim, fire. It's like holdfast but the simplicity of the game made it so much... better? Every action and movement mattered so much more. We drilled so much we even had a fire by file command - it was glorious. If you're interested, i can get you in touch with some guys who've played it for almost 20 years and have some great footage. It was truly the most unique gaming experience i've ever had and I yearn for it often.
Love the video. If you ever get a chance, give the NeoTokyo soundtrack a listen. It's criminality underrated and so good. The soundtrack appears in the game only after you type in a command into the console which is strange af.
I actually used to play A.V.A. Alliance of Valiant Arms. Which I think was the predecessor to A.V.A. Global. It was less focused on bomb planting 6v6 esports gamemodes and more focused on pushing payloads, tug-of war kinda gameplay with NPC's with a bunch of extra HP. Edit: Welp calling myself out for posting this w/o watching the whole video. The community was sick from my memory, very positive :D
I used to play a game called Assault Cube. I was part of some kind of squad and we would hang out in a facebook group talking about upcoming matches against other squads, we even included the squad tag in our username and when we came across other players with a tag, we would try to stomp them as hard as possible. Thanks to the weird physics (props to the , many talented mappers managed to create parkour-style maps that would challenge our skills and knowledge on these bugs. I miss the good old days.

NeoTokyo obviously is something everyone should remember since there weren't a lot of "cyberpunk" options back then. hell, wikipedia still had a dedicated "cyberpunk" topic page at the time (until the topic got over-flooded at the end of the 2010s).
i play both fortess forever and neotokyo, thank you for keeping the servers on FF and maybe by extension the whole game alive, we genuiently thought they were gonna die :)
(btw 2:28 this pronounciation actually caused "conflict" in other places before lmao)
Happy to host the server for your NT game night :)
Why not make video about good and popular games that lost vast amount of players, for instance: Titanfall 2, The escapist 1/2, Worms, TABG, Mordhau and many more?
i think he’s trying to show games taht are dead to try bring a few new players to them
Splitgate
why would he make videos on trash games. those games died for a reason
Gta online
Titanfall 💔😭
I love your choice of the MapleStory OST. Thank you for tapping into my nostalgia
Babe, wake up. The Wendigoon of rare and lost video game is back. 😎
LIL RETRO!!! I played double action boogaloo with him before, I love double action sm
Thanks for giving Neotokyo some fresh eyes Rye! Cheers
oh my god, the fact that you actually played AVA is such a nostalgia trips.
I remember watching APL stream Batallion. Everyone was psyched for the "WW2 CSGO" and so many people wanted it to succeed. Shame the devs ruined it.
i used to play battle grounds 3 around the time it came out. it was always the same people whom you played with. the voice chats were one of the reasons i played it so much. people were hilarious. im suprised to see it still running.
ludwig stole this the other day that means you sir are trending hard
I started watching your videos yesterday, and got to say, the music in between games, is absolute bonkers
They only refunded their kickstarter backers not people who actually bought it on steam which was super annoying.
Oh shit, I actually "played" neotokyo once years ago after randomly finding it on steam. Fucked around on a random map a bit but left since I couldn't find anyone.
For the sake of old youtube i have one thing to say
FIRST!
Balls
@@Soma430 someone has to do it man. If not us then who?
Congrats welcome to the most unimportant club on the internet ;)

It's awesome to see you found battlegrounds III. I've been playing the game for a number of weeks and time flies when I play it. The main public server is usually packed with about 20+ people around noon here in the US. I sometimes run into regulars who play the game far more than me. I often hop on to play "a game or two" and multiple hours go by.
There’s a Half Life mod called The Specialists
Which is the ancestor of Double Action Bugaloo
ah man i got chills when the neotokyo segment started. many confused teen years in there, soundtrack by ed harrison still holds up to this day.
DOUBLE ACTION is a fire game, so much memories unlockeds
NGL watching this video reminded me of playing a game called APB: Reloaded, the game that I will never forget, the in-depth character creation, making some new in-game friends and goofing around, I will never forget that time.
that maplestory BGM got me feeling SUPER nostalgic. was not expecting that in this video
I swear you are the most underrated youtuber ever.
For me the game I started out with was probably dirty Bomb😅those we're fun times
Thank you Rye for shedding some light on those forgotten games
Okay...finding you randomly was a YT blessing. I know I'm gonna watch all the videos within two days and cry. But I'm very glad. You're entertaining sir and have unique channel.
Brings back memories... Used to play Double Action Bugaloo alot.
Servers where always full. Met some great people there.
I guess it's time to visit my old game again ❤
man double action boogaloo was actually awesome back when it had players, the car chases were some of the most intense chaotic experiences ive ever had in a game
you are one of the best youtube channel i've found recently
Double Action Boogaloo was one of the first PC games I ever played. I had no money at the time and it was the begining of how I learned how to use mouse and Keyboard for shooter games. Many fond memories from back then.
If I had to recommend a dead FPS game, I would say my favorite is "Sectors Edge". The servers are officially closing next month, but the small community is going to keep it alive by self hosted servers. Definitely the best small game community I have ever been a part of. RIP SE
The worst thing a gamedev can do is abandon a game and not making any updates
I guess because they can be absurd which, with friends, makes it 10x more hilarious than something that is more "serious" like CS:GO or something, and give you just the freedom to goof around without getting absolutely dunked on by like 30 other players trying to test stuff out with your friends
natural selection 2 is a game that i love, there is usual enough people to play at any hours but it will never received new update
As a veteran of AVA, the gameplay itself is very good as free to play game, but later on the skin gun and regular gun makes so much difference that basically is paid to win. I almost go pro playing AVA with my friends back in the day
I used to play double action: Boogaloo all the time in the early 2010s. Glad to see it's still being played.
Double Action is truly a gem of a game, I've had such a blast playing it throughout the past 6-7 years. pretty active community as well.
Cheers and great work!
i've just recently started watching your videos about dead games, it's great content, relaxing and wholesome in a way. Keep it up
You missed some things in Battle Grounds 3.
Once you commit some time into double action the movement in the game is actually great, lots of fun memories playing it with friends.
I found this channel a week ago out of random and I see your reviewed AVA. Sir thank you. I miss this game and it's glory ❤ so many good memories.
Hi Rye. I'm addicted to your videos. Please stop making them so I can finally focus on my work. Thanks!
PS: NEVER STOP MAKING VIDEOS
These videos are gold. You are going to blow up! The best part of these old games are the communities
Okay this is unrelated to the amazing video, but Double Action Bugaloo was the founder of the new movement for Call of Duty Black Ops 6
I stumbled upon your channel about 2 weeks ago and I've been bingeing your videos ever since, I can't get enough. Your channel is gonna go far with the awesome content!
Double action boogalo.
Maaaaan what a throwback, you made me remember some good times and for that i thank you.
AVA was the first PC I ever played, back when people like Skadoodle played.
This video gave me so much nostalgia.
The soundtrack appears in the game only after you type in a command into the console which is strange af.
i just seen your videos, heck its so wholesome and nostalgin. thank you so much for making these videos
you deserve a like just for having Silent hill 2 music in it, and also my favorite
Saw Double Action in the intro.
instantly got hyped.
Wonder if Black Magic is still the meta.
Omg LOVE neotokyo! One of the best source mods. They have neotokyo fridays on the NT discord where some people play :)
Oh my God I played SO much Battlegrounds 2 as a child. Not 3, but 2, and it was so amazing. It's a huge part of why I'm a history nerd today
The moment you said the words ,'double action boogaloo' I audibly gasped, got fond memories of that with friends about 7 years ago
A.V.A had great competitive play and community! Miss the glory days, Skadoodles been my fav eSport competitor since I played this game in 2011/12 before CS:GO
nice to see neotokyo on here i mentioned it last video thanks bro moar players is good
