I spent some of it on expanding my inventory space and some of it on upgrade materials for my weapon on my monk. Devs deleted all of my items on every character I had and from my bank and reversed all of my inventory expansions. They even took away the items you get when you make a character. They were so incompetent in dealing with the situation that my monk even got softlocked because I was on the second map with no gear or money and it takes a bit of money to teleport back to the lower level map where I could have possibly built my character back up if I had the motivation for it for some eldritch reason. The annoying thing about dead MMO's is all they have to do is add Bots to make up the game play. When you see a static / dead MMO it's heartbreaking - so much work went into creating the thing, why not just make it a workable single player? I used to do online tutorials in BF1942, and it could be hours before a "real" player came along - I was perfectly happy finding ever more weird ways of killing the bots. Especially now with reasonably clever AI - a lot of these old titles could easily come back to life. You could Single Player an old MMO with decent AI. Not a sentence I thought I'd ever type but....
I remember Salem from maybe a decade or so ago when there was ~30 concurrent players at a time. I played about long enough to start being able to hunt deer. The issue with the game though was there was a farming exploit that made some older players have huge stats that got patched out so newer players didn't really have hope to catch up. I remember one player in particular that let several people attack them simultaneously and the attackers ran out of yellow bile (can't attack anymore) before the defender ran out of health. As far as permadeath it probably wasn't common. You could die to animals or players and still respawn. IIRC for a permadeath to happen the player that kills you had to perform a ritual over your dead body.
Salem actually had a fresh server launch recently. The current developer seemed to have put in some real effort into revitalizing the game, but unfortunately it fell rather flat. Some factors were outside the developer's control (owner of the game's Wiki was AWOL, while there were people with admin/maintenance access they didn't want to revamp the Wiki without permission, so new and returning players were left with massive out-off-date Wiki for a game where you really need one) there were also some instances of less-than-optimal planning and/or knee-jerk reactions. While the criminal system had already been nerfed a bit, the ability to put other players into "stocks" at the NPC town was still so powerful that the PvP meta became about "don't attack the enemy, try to force them to attack you so you can collect their crime scent."
Neat. Yeah I imagine the game has changed a lot since I last played. Shame about the wiki though. The obvious solution would be to start a new wiki but I imagine with an already small playerbase it's probably tricky to find a new owner (not sure if they'd have to pay domain hosting costs or whatever). Considering my experience with the patched farming exploit any knee-jerk reactions wouldn't really surprise me.
The problem, in my opinion, with the MMO model is that it never matured from it's early roots during the late 90's early 2000's. In fact, it regressed a bunch. MMO's had a lot more detail and complexity that you just don't see today. The MMO model has also become stale since it did not progress to a modern model like other non-MMO's did. In fact, you can find MUD servers which are very niche today that have higher modernized gaming models then current MMO's. So It doesn't surprise me that so many MMO's failed that released less then a decade ago.

I played the HECK out of Tantra online XD Such a fun game, though back then it was extremely graphically demanding and it had a massive community, private servers, etc
I tried Trimurti once before and liked it, my only gripe was there is virtually no explanation from the developers on what to in game. I think people are trying the game and just thinking "I'm stuck here" and then just giving up because the game doesn't explain anything and the Steam community which is usually full of advice and guides is dead. I spent ages trying to find a mob when I first tried it but couldn't find the mob, I asked on Steam but no help there. I eventually got the answer from the discord channel, but I am sure there are a lot of people not using discord who just think, why would I bother continuing.
I think now I will skip this game, hopefully they can make some decent improvements. Constant dying because spells don't hit or they just don't register, target running at you and you are either clicking on your spell or pressing the hotkey, but all that is working is the basic attack that constantly misses. HP and TP regeneration is virtually non-existent and even drinking a health potion doesn't save you.

hey i watched your introductionary video about guild wars 2 when you first launched and it made me wonder, after seeing it again on my feed today, if you ever became hopelessly addicted to it? ive now relentlessly played it for past 6 months and clocking in almost 900 hours
Never played a dead MMO, I did play MMO's that died overtime, I still miss two from time to time : Warhammer online and Pirates of the burning sea. I get my fix in GW and gw2 now a day.
The Infinite Black on mobile is an interesting one. Used to be a huge player base with multiple servers. Terrible moderation and management of the game brought it down in recent years. Maybe only 50 dedicated people still play.
I played Salem in it's haydays, and what you say about the despair of being killed by someone when you had build a lot of skill is correct. There was a group of russian griefers just running around killing people, just because, and it took a dedicated group of players mostly of 5 months to track them down and kill them enough times that they left the game for good. I was a backup to the group of hunters, helping them generate the food and things they needed to raise their skills, so they would be stronger than the russians. We had a city of 25 active players, filling a rather large plot of land. The thing si that if you don't pay the upkeep on your land, you lose the right to it, and slowly all your stuff will start to deteriorate. That is why you came across nothing on your travels, everything that has been has deteriorated over time. There were also 3 servers at the height of the game, but because the developers was redoing something major in the code, they had to reset the servers completely (this was all in the beta days of the game), 2/3 of the playerbase left as they lost everything they had and had to start over, and that killed the game.
I used to play Rappelz like 15 years ago, it was a fun game but the devs sold out and sold the game to different publishers more than a few times and it killed it. I think at one point it had over 20 servers world wide and about 20,000 players
I miss Acherons call2. I was part of the beta team and was still there when they pulled the plug. There were still 100s of thousands of players but bethesda sold out.
played Karos a lot in the old days , its not dead , more or less a lot of ppl still plays , but in private servers mostly , it has a lot of good mechanics , pretty good game yea
i saw Rappelz on the list in the intro and felt a pang of sadness. I once ran a massive guild on that game. owned dungeons, etc. good times man. good times.
there was this cool mobile MMORPG i used to play, Durango Wild Lands. the server shut down but it was the most interesting gameplay element i enjoyed, from the classes to the crafting.. the mobs where you get resources from are dinosaurs, (wish it was monsters instead) but it was ok.. its sad that no other game ever got inspired from it.
Love the Video, If your at all interested in a game like Salem you should check out "Haven and Hearth". It's made by Salems original developers and is much more updated, its still very brutal and convoluted but its extremely rewarding. It's also much more active at peak times, with more then 1000 concurrent players at the start of the most recent world.
Try the original Ragnarok Online! though this might be more 'alive' than the others you've played. The vast majority of players are bots.. There are official eu/sea servers, although any player will tell you to play a private server as it's more true to the original mechanics, quests, etc.

Hi Waydot , i was wondering if you can make a video about the mmorpg Eden Eternal ? he was shut down around 2017/2018 after 7 year of service but he was 'revive'' not long ago (actualy the game was never really dead , when he shut down the communoty create ''Eden Eternal Vendetta'' who is the same game but with new update , new map, new class (all the thing who was missing in the original one and make it fall to the ground ) ect ... ) well , can you make a try ? Eden Eternal by now own by X-Legend entertainment (Take note that the X-Legend version is the Classic one with his own update, and Eden Eternal vendetta is completly different after the level 110 quest , after all i still prefer the Vendetta one x) )
guild wars 1 is still a good game imo. was so hyped for GW2 and really dont touch the game anymore after beating the base campaign and first 3 expansions. 12 years since launch its lost a lot of the appeal to me.
Hey do you think you could look into a game called rangers of oblivion? It’s one of the few mobile mmorpg games that was ACTUALLY good. The fighting was pretty good the story the music the monster sound affects everything was pretty damn good. But I think something happened with the company and it shut down its servers. But I heard it still has servers in Japan and Korea. I never got to finish the story :((
@@Waydots subscriptions, subscriptions, subscriptions, what's next a subscription to breath air...oh wait taxes... Huh the really made everything a subscription 😂😂😂 Just finished the video and subbed!
Trimutri is just a rip of an oldschool korean mmo called Tantra or Kathana that was insanely popular in SEA back in the early 2000s, with presumably some asset flips from a different engine and a poor attempt at porting or recreating the original character models which is probably why it feels so incredibly off
I hate gender-locked classes, they're stupid and a bit sexist. If a woman wants to be a warrior, she should be allowed to do so. Likewise, if a man wants to be idk say, a druid, he should be allowed to do so. I really don't understand why people keep incorporating gender-locked classes and just allow us to be either sex for any class and it kind of annoys me that it keeps popping up in MMOs and really any game that includes classes in general.
I was expecting angeldust to be here in your series and seems im correct. Although i was kinda hurt abt the rating, it was my part of my childhood during 2017-2019, and knew alot of cool people there and i honestly enjoyed that game You haven't seen the other feature that game offers like you can actually own a land outside of the town, and you can use teleporter to teleport you to adventure with other players (basically it teleports you with people flocking around) there are a lot of cool biomes as well when you go further out of the map. The developer is also very active to the very small community of that game, doing lives and visiting players build, everytime he livestream, its like 50-40 people with him doing build reviews then afterwards adventure and kill monsters Well its been a while, idk what changes they made in the game now. The sensitivity wasnt worse when i played it when i was 13, and i had a friend there that lasted for 1 year, still now i miss him. We made builds and towns and cities together. Also i didnt even know they had 3d now, back then its just 2d so its really been a long time Sadly you've should explore more to the toolbar and used the teleporter but yeah. (Sorry if this came out like attacking you lmao, im just bitter by the rating and your point was valid so yeah, maybe im just being biased because that game was part of my childhood)

The game was great.
hey
i watched your introductionary video about guild wars 2 when you first launched and it made me wonder, after seeing it again on my feed today, if you ever became hopelessly addicted to it? ive now relentlessly played it for past 6 months and clocking in almost 900 hours
Never played a dead MMO, I did play MMO's that died overtime, I still miss two from time to time : Warhammer online and Pirates of the burning sea.
I get my fix in GW and gw2 now a day.
Using a horse as a mob in a medieval rpg is like, idk, using Lamborghinis as mobs in GTA. That's an expensive steed now slaughtered 😅
Please continue this content series, this is interesting
There were also 3 servers at the height of the game, but because the developers was redoing something major in the code, they had to reset the servers completely (this was all in the beta days of the game), 2/3 of the playerbase left as they lost everything they had and had to start over, and that killed the game.
love this series! also try wurm online :DD
Yessss✨I’ve been waiting for you to make another one of these love it so much. Great video🙌
I love these kind of video see me as a new subscriber cant wait for more and imma watch your old ones too thanks man
Karos actually looked like a good game out of all the other games.
One of these days, I think it would be fun to bring some friends along to try and explore a dead MMO together.
Thank you, todays episode made me laugh out loudly severeal times! Keep up the good work.
you should try 4Story next
played Karos a lot in the old days , its not dead , more or less a lot of ppl still plays , but in private servers mostly , it has a lot of good mechanics , pretty good game yea
You should try dragon nest, it's not dead on the SEA server but i don't know how is it on the outside of SEA
You may have spoken about it, but I recommend Animyst
Very bizarre multiplayer game, fits the parameters
trimurty seems like a brighter version of tantra
i saw Rappelz on the list in the intro and felt a pang of sadness. I once ran a massive guild on that game. owned dungeons, etc. good times man. good times.
Really? tis the age old story of a lot of these games to be honest
lol that game was the gateway to my computer gaming played it in 4th grade now only private severs
Rappelz was the best. I was in Arcadia guild
My favorite MMO was Dungeon Runners. Unfortunately, the servers were shut down
It doesn't exist anymore except in emulator form but I miss EQOA an old PS2 game.
Fantastic game.
Next maybe do a vid on abandonware. Planet Explorers comes to mind.
Probably weren't supposed to kill the horses, duh.😂😂😂
Stash actually looks like it would have been very cool and have a little charm if it was playable
Yeah definitely’ would love to see a modern take on it.
The thumbnail made me think of Roma Victor and I forgot that game existed back in 2009!
there was this cool mobile MMORPG i used to play, Durango Wild Lands.
the server shut down but it was the most interesting gameplay element i enjoyed, from the classes to the crafting.. the mobs where you get resources from are dinosaurs, (wish it was monsters instead) but it was ok..
its sad that no other game ever got inspired from it.
They are websites, you know 😅
@@Cola2013_1 they who? who are websites?
You should checkout runes of magic, not sure if it's still being played or not
I notice you don't cover Ultima. I literally multi cliented and made billions uncontested on production servers.
You could review Pax Dei in the "Dead & Abandoned MMOs" format again now :P It went from over 10.000 to 200-500 players since release :P
Waythot was great man!
I love how youtube has marked this as a town of salem video (its also probably why it ended up on my homepage)
I have played the Salem for a few weeks :D :D :D hell of a game ;)
Awesome! Best loot ever!
Awesome! Best loot ever!

Awesome! Best loot ever!
I can literally hear the annoying ranger behind you talking. She sounds....really loud. Glad you kept your sanity
What makes you think I kept any semblance of sanity? 😂
Tbh there are plenty of dead godly and amazing mmos that are 100x better than popular mmos today like dark age of Camelot
Have you ever did a video over Warframe its a pretty great free mmo (i believe) several years of free content and even the premium currency can be acquired by trade weapons and other items.
last game fonts and style is reminiscent of aion
the whole "hardcore survival MMO with permadeath and whatever" are kinda destinied to fail.
And Concord which is a bit like OverWatch is shutting down 2 weeks after it went online.
Waydot, can I leave heret wo suggestions? I love your videos, and would be nice to see your take in this two games: Warframe and Digimon Online
"next i saw a horse and just started blasting" lol
trimurti looks like free realms
Near future Neverwinter will be part of this .
Do uh... you not know what woodchips are my guy? o.o
The abandoned games are like abandoned malls.
Thats a great analogy actually
@Waydots Liminal space feel. Especially when you go back to a server that used to be a hive of action, to find its dead and abandoned.
It's just a chatbot you can find one in any website that doesn't care about user support
Have you tried Secret World Legends?
NOT WAYTHOT LOL
guild wars 1 is still a good game imo. was so hyped for GW2 and really dont touch the game anymore after beating the base campaign and first 3 expansions.
I never got to finish the story :((
I've had my steam account for almost 15 years and I've never seen an account alert... You hacking my dude? xD XD
Lol nope, thats just from failing to make a payment on one of my many many… way too many game subscriptions lol.
@@Waydots subscriptions, subscriptions, subscriptions, what's next a subscription to breath air...oh wait taxes... Huh the really made everything a subscription 😂😂😂
Just finished the video and subbed!
its sad that trimurti looks almost exactly like aq3d
sadly that game is still thriving just need to find the right server
Subbed....you remember it and play it so we don't have to thanks WD :)
Trimutri is just a rip of an oldschool korean mmo called Tantra or Kathana that was insanely popular in SEA back in the early 2000s, with presumably some asset flips from a different engine and a poor attempt at porting or recreating the original character models which is probably why it feels so incredibly off
It looks like a Game influenced by lineage2 lol
I hate gender-locked classes, they're stupid and a bit sexist. If a woman wants to be a warrior, she should be allowed to do so. Likewise, if a man wants to be idk say, a druid, he should be allowed to do so. I really don't understand why people keep incorporating gender-locked classes and just allow us to be either sex for any class and it kind of annoys me that it keeps popping up in MMOs and really any game that includes classes in general.
I understand what you're saying....but is it really that big of a deal?
@@Ponkan45 Depends on who you ask and whether or not the classes are at least balanced.
wait... the matrix servers are still up? thought WB utterly killed that
Didnt know karos still existed
I was expecting angeldust to be here in your series and seems im correct. Although i was kinda hurt abt the rating, it was my part of my childhood during 2017-2019, and knew alot of cool people there and i honestly enjoyed that game
You haven't seen the other feature that game offers like you can actually own a land outside of the town, and you can use teleporter to teleport you to adventure with other players (basically it teleports you with people flocking around) there are a lot of cool biomes as well when you go further out of the map.
The developer is also very active to the very small community of that game, doing lives and visiting players build, everytime he livestream, its like 50-40 people with him doing build reviews then afterwards adventure and kill monsters
Well its been a while, idk what changes they made in the game now. The sensitivity wasnt worse when i played it when i was 13, and i had a friend there that lasted for 1 year, still now i miss him. We made builds and towns and cities together. Also i didnt even know they had 3d now, back then its just 2d so its really been a long time
Sadly you've should explore more to the toolbar and used the teleporter but yeah.
(Sorry if this came out like attacking you lmao, im just bitter by the rating and your point was valid so yeah, maybe im just being biased because that game was part of my childhood)
Blizzard can breath slightly easier, for one more week anyway...
