- A hospital in Walkerton, Ontario is flooded with patients with the same alarming symptoms. All suffer from fever, nausea and gastrointestinal problems. Health officials suspect water contamination, but the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) reports that the water is safe. The next day, 20 more patients are admitted with the same symptoms.

Being a parent, having a very sick child and being able to do anything about it is about the worst feeling you can go through.
Right? I worry when my son gets a cold... a cold. I couldn't imagine the families of these victims. The waiting game is the worst.

When there was an ecoli outbreak in Japan I’ve heard of Walkerton. The officials learnt from what happened in Walkerton and applied what was learnt. Those suffered at Walkerton, especially who suffered loss, greatly helped us.
Walkerton is very close to where I live and I remember it making world news. Its rare that bad water cause so many illnesses and deaths in Ontario Canada anymore. Places that have bad water dont drink tap or well water. Native reserves often get supplied with clean water as well if theres a problem. Least around herr anyway.
Many people have learned from Walkerton like yourself. At least that horrible situation helped and still helps many people

I remember that outbreak quite clearly people were spooked cause there had been a recent rabies case in my home town
Dr. McQuigge hopefully received a medal. How stressful it must've been, for him to go ahead and have the city's water tested - even thought the PUC told him the water was fine. Thank goodness, he persevered, so many lives were surely saved thanks to him.
Perfect justice would've been to force those who had lied about this problem to drink their own water. That would send out a message that no one would ever forget.
I read a book about an E.Coli case around the same time as the Walkerton disaster (book is called E. Coli 0157 by Mary Heersink). Her son fell ill from uncooked hamburger. The young patient was eventually treated with platelet therapy. It saved his life. E.Coli is one scary microbe.
I live in London Ontario and this was all that people talked about for a long time. Some people that had suffered during the outbreak, went on to have continuing health problems, such as IBS ( Irritable bowel syndrome), and other health problems. The government's handling of this tragedy was totally disgusting !
21 kids ended up on dialysis for life, with its 5 year survival rate of 34.7%. Six died.
The PUC still doesn't require commissioners to have water safety training for their elected positions.

My mom flatlined in the hospital due to the Ecoli outbreak of walkerton back in the 2000’s. The government only compensated her 3000$… they took advantage of the community. She didn’t live in walkerton but ended up drinking the water at the tim hortons there. I am thankful that she is still alive and they were able to bring her back to life at the hospital

One of my grandchildren had this e-coli when he was 17 months old. His kidneys were very impaired, and a plane was on standby to fly him to a children's hospital for dialysis, but after 5 days he showed the beginnings of a bit of improvement. After 10 days he was able to come home. The cause was never found, but it was believed to be from ground water at a playground with picnic tables where there was a family reunion.

My best friend got severely sick from the Walkerton Water Crisis and lost her grandmother to the same thing. She now has a weakened immune system among other medical issues directly related to this event. She does receive compensation from the government as far as I’m aware but nothing will bring back her grandma or her health.
I remember this happening and also I remember from the news that two brothers were in charge of the well water system and had been put in managerial roles despite not having any formal training regarding public works or water management because they had worked for the PUC since the 70s when their father worked for the PUC. There were huge overhauls afterward of the safety standards and the town did sue.
This would never have happened if the PUC had checks on the water every 24hours. Suggest that we all take a look at water-borne illness. Physteria bacteria caused death in fish and many aquatic life in the Neuse river located S.Carolina. The bacteria originated from pork producers releasing pigs blood into the river. Its on reel responders cHannel and will shock people to know how sick the bacteria made alot of citizens.
I remember listening to a podcast called Swindled that dealt with this event. Very interesting...and horrifying.
I can't help but cry with this I'm a mom of 3 girls, I couldn't imagine the pain every one of these families felt. I would die inside if I lost one of my little ones.

Sharon, if that was your mother or children, would you really be saying that? I am sure there are funds somewhere to at least fix, or shut down the well that could not have it's water supply cleaned. Knowing that it was not working and covering it up, means someone knew it was at least broken.
I'm not saying that makes it okay. I think they took advantage of the fact that no one was keeping an eye on them.

I remember that. I grew up not too far away (far enough away that there were no worries about our water thankfully), and it was just all over the news, every day. I was only 14, and it was scary. Even after the boneheads admitted they screwed up, the aftermath was in the news for months, and then intermittently for years. The level of incompetence was terrifying. And yet there's incompetence everywhere, unfortunately.
Living near Walkerton, and my Dad working there during that time, it was scary. The people responsible for the water contamination were fired, and charged. Since then a new water treatment facility was built, and is used as a training center

Stan Koebel is sentenced to a year in jail. Frank Koebel gets nine months' house arrest. Ontario Superior Court Judge Bruce Durno stresses there was never any intent on the part of the Koebels to harm anyone, but he finds them negligent in discharging their duties.
Stan was in charge, Frank was the Forman.
Compensation was a mere $2,000 but those who died, were sick or had life long health conditions got more but it didn’t say how much.

I lived in Owen Sound and I was hoping to see the local hospital interiors. Nope :( Anyways It really set off our communities anger, but also our compassion. We all donated tons of bottled water and offered cooked food and washing facilities to those affected. :) We wished we could have done more.
I live 40 minutes away from Flint and I remember when the crisis first started since there was no bottled water in my city for about a month due to it all being sent to Flint to help them in their time of need. Walkerton reminds me so much of Flint that it's scary

I'm a kidney transplant patient. I was born with kidney disease and I've gotten E coli twice. It feels horrible. The doctors thought I was going to die. Thank God I didn't.

I remember Walkerton. Horrible and totally avoidable situation and all because of lies, coverups and gross incompetence .One can only hope that the changes made after this incident will prevent it ever happening again. RIP innocent victims and their families.

I went to college with a girl and her twin sister from 2003-2005, they grew up on a farm in Walkerton, and luckily had their own water well, and didn’t get sick, but they knew many that were. As soon as she told me she was from Walkerton, the first question I asked her was if she was sick.
Well water users actually get sick more often then city systems. Your friend is very lucky! ✌
Well water is naturally filtered although it should be regularly checked that it's safe although more often than not its much safer
Dr. Hallett was MY girls' pediatrician!!! Right after this outbreak!! And, she's the one who also diagnosed Spina Bifida Occulta in MY daughter at age 5!!!!! FANTASTIC DOCTOR!!!!
Also, my cousin's daughter was affected by this outbreak and almost died!!!
My Grandmother died of E-Coli back in 1965. She was a Home Economics Major AND a Nurse...and was always careful about preparing food. My guess is (since the city, Springfield, Illinois, didn't have a major outbreak) that she must have got an under cooked hamburger at a restaurant. Her death certificate said the E-Coli shut her kidneys down.

I remember my son's Nephrologist (kidney specialist) from a Children's Hospital here in western Canada was flown out to help out Sick Kids with Walkerton surviving kids who needed long term treatment.
Just heartbreaking.
My heart is broken for the Glass family, at the unexplainable, tragic murder of their 4-year old daughter. I am completely out of words when it comes to the cause. Unbelievable. I cannot believe that the PUC basically got away with this. What a world we live in today. Safe water and all. Why this never happens today, amazing. We are lucky.
In California there's an electric company whose powerlines have caused massive wildfires, and they lied to the government. One small lie that seems insignificant can cause devastating problems.

I've never been a mother, but I can feel the mom's anxiety through the screen looking at this innocent, beautiful little girl, behaving so calmly - not knowing that things could turn for the worse at any moment and take her precious little life. It break my heart. And now, we're dealing with Covid 19 hoping it gets checked at the borders and resolved asap. Heaven help them all.
I grew up near Walkerton and I remember seeing this all over the news. Everyone was talking about it everyone in my town even though we were on a completely different water supply were compulsively boiling all their water. Bottled water sales skyrocketed it was crazy.

I remember when this happened. My own kids were the ages of the kids most affected. I remember when the news reported that the day the chlorination machine had broken down on Mother’s Day and the person at the plant had tried to contact superiors at various levels and was unable to contact them for several hours so he finally contacted someone in city government (I’m thinking mayor but could be wrong) because the bacteria level had gotten too high at that point and was told not to worry about it and the safe levels were set where they were as a precaution but there was still room before it was actually dangerous. Then when people got sick the city official covered up what they did for political reasons.

This makes me hurt I'm my heart. I have 3 boys, all teens, and a little sister who is 3 yrs old. If this happened to them I would lose it. I love my babies. Seeing these kids like this tears at my heart.
I’ve lived in Walkerton and still do live close by and I’ll tell you that poor town will never get over what happened...I heard that the town of Walkerton was actually seeing google because if you ‘google’ Walkerton over 2 decades later that was the first thing that comes up...it’s ruining there image etc...they probably have the best water in the world now! Lol there’s so much care and attention put into water safety now.

It's a Fine Day I think probably everyone figured it out right away. It’s too bad that they had to drag everything out for so long when there wasn’t any suspense anyways.
E coli was the worst but what other contaminants were present in that water that had not been treated properly and therefore was unfit to drink.
I bought a farm that had not had cattle on it or farmed for close to 20 years, the first thing I did was test the water, it showed e.coli and atrazine (weed killer) at a dangerous level, it took gallons of bleach and several huge truck loads of water to backwash it and stabilize the water, I tested every other month for 5 years, never showed again. That tells you the might of e.coli to live in the soil that long.

@@misisbrown4368 there were newspaper stories, a documentary film and a couple of books written about the PUC commissioners not having any training on water quality and allowing one manager set policy, which was their jobs.
Basically, the entire PUC and political leadership allowed the water treatment system to operate on untrained autopilot, resulting in over 20 children having severe kidney damage and 6 deaths. It's all on the public record, for those who actually care enough to look up.
I love how in the end all of the public officials drank the town water. Really a showing of trust. Very cool.
Whoever lied about the water testing should be be given life in prison without parole.
Only America hands out that sort of sentence. In Canada, where this happened, even if you kill 1,000 people you can’t get more than a single sentence of 25 to life. In the UK only 63 people have life without parole sentences, Anders Brevaick only got a single sentence of 21 years, extendable for cause, in Norway for killing 77 people. You know what else those countries have way less recidivism (repeat customers) than America, which has the highest in the entire developed world. So we are obviously not doing a good job of handling crime.

Stan Koebel and Frank Koebel, ex foremen of the town's Public Utility Commission, were charged with public endangerment, fraud and break of public duty. Stan Koebel was sentenced to a year in jail, Frank Koebel received 9 months house arrest. What a joke !
This was also during the Mike Harris government, who made a ton of cuts to public services in Ontario. And now Doug Ford's government is doing the same. Watch the same shit happen again... 🙄

In late to middle August 2019 I got listeria meningitis for three months....... Still not back to normal still scared not sure what vegetable I ate to cause it. Scared to eat fresh fruit and veggies. Being 53 never had food poisoning ever in my life, have short term memory loss still had to learn to walk again.
This is just so sad. Really don't take things for granted even water.

LISTERIA IS A FOOD BOURNE BACTERIA NOT A VACCINE, IT caused the menigits in me. The listeria is from animals and/or humans, and dirty water. Sorry for yelling...... I just get upset especially now that the nurse practioner told me I was lying about being allergic to yeast. I found out that there is no FDA test for yeast, it just says yes or no if you are allergic to and I know there is several varieties of yeast/fungus. I have to get an IgE test, also goes by the name RAST test. Been allergic to yeast for 26 years now and it sucks a lot.

We had an outbreak of Ecoli in my part of NZ a few years ago. Authorities found it was from bagged salads - the lettuce was contaminated. I don't buy those bagged salads, I grow my own lettuce in containers and window boxes. Mind you, we have fluoride in our water here.....but I store and use rainwater when I can to water my food plants.

You only have to grow two of the same plants and water each plant one with rain water and the other from the tap and see the difference
My heart just breaks and goes out to all of those effected but mainly to that poor sweet little baby girl. I knew this would end up with death of a few of these children, I didn't expect it to hit as hard as it did though. That poor sweet little babe. 4 years old. Molly glass, may you rest in peace. I hope the victims - both dead and alive - were compensated. I say the dead as well, cos that should go to their relatives who are having to go on with their lives without them. I don't normally condone the culture of using indiscriminately, but in the face of such blatant neglect, leading to pain and so offering on behalf of the victim and the relatives, I feel it should be used here.

Please know it's possible to have well water contaminated with coliform bacteria and e.coli. I manage a plumbing company. In my state it's a law to have well water tested with every house sale. But we've had an increase in these bacterias after a big rain storm recently. Scary stuff. You can have your well water tested at any time, you never know!

23:59 Serious question: why would issuing a Boil Water Advisory be considered a "risky move"? If it wasn't the water, then no harm done. People were just extra cautious. If the advisory isn't issued but the problem IS in the water, then a lot of lives could potentially be harmed. Isn't it just logical to issue a Boil Water Advisory to be on the safe side? No harm done, right? Just a small inconvenience while the officials continue to try to uncover what's sickening/killing people. Hardly something to be considered "risky".
I think it's because if he was wrong, it would count as defamation of the waterworks, which could lead to legal action being taken. Also, if he was wrong and accidently created mass hysteria, but then was proven wrong, he could have made the situation worse by causing a panic.

It’s because the water company said the water was clean and it being a small town they most likely have heavy influence. It’s also a small town and that is not a small feat. Boil water orders can also cause mass panic which can make things significantly worse. It isn’t taken lightly.

This is how our officials move in our country. We are so "politically" correct it is sickening. If we say this or that it could be racist or intolerant etc etc. It is what I hated about living in Ontario.....because they are overtly politically correct....of course except towards religion....then it is okay for them to demonize.
The Doctor is lucky that he let it be known and went public. If he didn't he could of been made quite - permanently.

Children/elderly + flu + fever+vomiting+ diarrhea for more than 8 hours= emergency, you don't wait it out!
But this wasn't the flu. Influenza involves mainly respiratory issues and fever. Not vomiting and diarrhea!
@@Littleone124 the poster is saying when you have those symptoms especially in a child you dont wait long to go to ER. Many things like dyhydration sickness and organ damage etc can be reversed and fixed if caught early. If a child isnt peeing normally and cant keep liquids down(or in their body) they are dehydrated. Also if you look at their tongue and its dry, pastey white and a coating thats a big sign too.
If I would have taken my children to the hospital every time they were sick for more than 8 hrs I would never leave there. I might as well have pitched a tent 🏕!!!! 8 hrs is not very long and fevers and many illnesses you might see a positive change in them within 24-48 hours. It sounded like day 3 seemed to be when most were seen by the Dr. It sounds like once the diarrhea started it was already to late. E. coli is something we naturally have present in our stools. It’s also treated by antibiotic therapy. I have watched so many videos recently that I can’t remember if this strain was said to be resistant to antibiotics 🥴
I personally don’t run my kids to the dr every time they get sick and they all made it to adulthood healthy!!!❤️❤️❤️
@@sonjam314 i dont run to the ER either for most things. BUT dehydration and very high temps are dangerous. In the very least a hospital giving them an IV for fluids will help greatly! Can't have tiny kids dehydrated and high fevers like that very long. Only makes things MUCH worse.

Amy Stone when seeing some of these stories it amazes me though how many parents don’t think of fever reducers, tepid baths, cold wash cloths, ect. Not just this case but many ambulance shows as well. It really does make me wonder where people have lost common sense. I do agree depending on the child, age, size, what has been tried at home, ect. Maybe I wasn’t such a worrier though because I’m a nurse, I know the signs of dehydration, have 6 wonderful healthy children and have gone through the hell of having a child with an autoimmune disorder and has had a splenectomy. I had to follow a totally different regimen at first because she was only 8. Vaccines like flu and pneumonia and meningitis where given to many of my children and adults that had constant contact.
I truly do understand where your coming from though and parents should at least contact there primary health provider and if they can’t be seen take them in.
For the first couple years my daughter had constant high fevers. She took antibiotics every day and was supposed to for the next 10 years. What we discovered was as soon as we stopped the antibiotics all the illness and fevers stopped. We had to watch her closer than the other children when it came to infection because her body couldn’t fight it off like the other kids. Thank God after stopping the the antibiotics 8 years earlier than we expected she seldom got sick 🤒
If my child had died over this silly, unnecessary matter, I might have felt the need to procure my own justice against Waterworks employees....

My sons got e-coli when a spring at my mum and dad's cottage became contaminated. They are both ok but my younger one was in hospital after a horrifying attack of sickness and diahorreaha at his sports day...poor baby!

PG&E were leaking toxic waste into the water tables on purpose and Walkerton the water supply got contaminated by Ecoli accidentally due to improper procedures at the water treatment plant.
@@SjofnBM1989 I agree with you... The Erin Brockovich was an intentional act. This is more similar to the levees giving way in New Orleans during hurricane Rita. The proper maintenance and repairs had not been done for several years and because of that the levees gave way during the hurricane flooding the entire city causing 120 deaths. If the levees had been in good repair the death toll would have been substantially lower.

I wondered how many others thought of that too.
I remember this really well because in 2001 we did a Bacterial identification lab in grade 11 biology just after this. One of the Bacteria we were told to identify was E-coli--but we were all getting errors on our measurements and the teacher gave us a crash course in statistics to check it.
Turns out I was the only one in the class to isolate it but the "gram test" passed (meaning it was gram positive - that blue blot test). Normal Ecoli is gram negative so we checked the research and it turns out O157 IS. A Differential stain showed Flagellum and proved it.
That was the same year I wound up culturing flesh eating bacteria from a boil on my arm in the same lab. I nearly lost my arm but the careful observations and quick response saved me.
The school, teacher, and local PHU were not happy. The whole lab had to be disenfected and the school was closed for three days....
What an experience! I give your teacher credit for doing a lab like that and you credit for culturing your own infection. So little they teach in high school these days has application in the real world. If it saved your arm, it can't be more practical than that.
I sure hope the families sued the pants of the city.
They did sue and the ones responsible to test the water were arrested (and I think some went to jail)

That fountain should also list the businessmen & officials involved who'd let that happen. If innocent victims are forced to live with the resulting health effects and likely shortened lives (and or costlier latter years), and their families suffer loss, the people accountable & their families ought to live with the shame. They don't have right to privacy as their victims didn't choose their fate - it was forced upon them.

I just can’t imagine what the people there felt. It was so terrible and I think if people would have done checks of the water .. It broke my heart think the fear they had.

This is what you get with nepotism -hiring relatives-The person in charge hired his brother
who had cognitive challenges, (less intelligent , slow learner). Because of that he did not adequately monitor the levels of contamination or add the correct levels of disinfectants.
Because of his cognitive limitations he was not able recognize the interconnections and see the bigger picture. Th real culprit was his brother for appointing him and the local officials that allowed him to appoint his brother. There is a reason that nepotism is not allowed in gov. bodies because this kind of thing can happen. No proper screening of applicants by unconnected individuals. This is a problem of small towns because of the interconnections and so the rule against nepotism is ignored.
You are absolutely right. I was waiting to hear this in the documentary but I suppose it wasn't about the brothers. He had no idea what he was doing and I think the main culprit should have gotten more than a year in jail.

I'm from Ontario the only thing I remember that made people sick was the Walkerton e coli sickness from tainted water. Not far from Owen Sound but Owen sounds water was not affected. 7 died 2300 sick. Provincial govt budget cuts and privatization of towns system the cause. Noone was checking or reporting the water. I guess I'll watch the video now.

I live in SA and worms were found in our local municipality water 🤢, it's been 2 years since my family used tap water for drinking. Still, bottlled water is big business but expensive for a large family like ours. But we have no choice.
I remember that happening in Texas a few years ago. My city buys our water from Detroit, even though we are 40 miles away. When I first moved here, whatever is in the water was giving me almost daily nosebleeds, migraines, and my hair was falling out in clumps. We installed a 7 stage reverse osmosis system on our water line. It was expensive at first, a few hundred US dollars, but it kills and filters out almost everything, and eventually pays for itself because you no longer have to keep buying bottled water. Another alternative for you might be a counter top Berkey water filtration system for drinking water, which also filters out most of the bad stuff. hth 👍
