Nona Hendryx is one of the greatest songwriters in popular music. A bold soul sister in every sense. When she speaks, listen.

After many years of hoping, I FINALLY got to see Nona perform live during the Cyndi Lauper True Colors Tour some years back. What Nona is sharing about Grace Jones, TOTALLY applies to herself!

Ive seen a bunch of "great ones" do their thing, live...what a blessing that is. But Im also a music lover to the bone..and I love all kinds of music. Im in my 'jazz bag' now, indulging in Thelonius Monk, Carmen McRae, Abbey Lincoln and a lot of Quincy Jones's old content. But truth me told, Ive never put Nona or either of her two former bandmates to the side. I listen to her and them, very often....especially when I have folks over and we're just being ourselves...passing the joint...wine on the table....and making fun of of the World (hear that, Republicans?). Nona (and Im sure other people feel the same way) seems like a relative to me...thats how long Ive been a fan of hers.
When I was a little guy in grade school...after I finished my homework, Id go sit in front of my parent's record collection and just zone out, listening to all of LaBelle's albums..going back to their first self-named album in '71, on thru "Back to Now" almost 40 yrs after their 1st LP. I heard freedom...purpose...political statements...lessons about love, sex and relationships, in general. But more importantly, I heard them articulating in so many ways, how important it is, TO BE YOU!...EXACTLY, YOU!..and thats really all I needed to hear. So, Id sit their and listen to a handful of those albums that really resonated with me (Chameleon, Phoenix, Moonshadow and Pressue Cookin'). Conversely, Grace Jones is a HUGE part of my life's soundtrack, too
I leaned on her just as much as I did on LaBelle, Nina Simone, Sylvester and Prince (in later years). To see Grace Jones, live...is to see an all time great. You feel like you're in the presence of true greatness and music royalty, when you go to see her. Twice, Ive had that honor. And I think its high-time, that somebody in the United States of America, give this lady some kind of lifetime achievement award for sustaining herself in the music business for almost 50 yrs.
