As someone who lost 65lbs in 2020 through good diet and exercise, down to a very fit weight, to then losing a close family member and going through a big depression that lasted a few years and gaining ALL of the weight back to someone who is now re-embarking on losing the weight again..... I can tell you a big indicator of my mental health is being lower in weight and focused on being fit and eating well.

I completely agree, as someone that lost 20kg. It's not a race. Focus on eating better, healthier, cut out ultra processed food. You can still lose weight with a small deficit. Cut out refined carbs and processed sugars as much as possible.

I always find it so interesting when people say that losing weight won't make you happier, because my experience was that I 100% feel better and way happier when I'm skinny. Like it's almost ridiculous how much of a difference it makes, and I'm talking about 10kg less here, not 30+

I agree and disagree. I think unhappiness makes people gain weight. And then gaining weight makes people more and more unhappy because you're treated worse and your body starts feeling worse.
I 100% get treated better and feel better thin. But until I tackled what made me unhappy originally (zero free time or fun in my life) I regained weight because I still was craving a fix for that unhappiness (and oreos spark joy when you have no free time).
If you gained weight originally because your marriage sucks, you're marriage is still going to suck when you're thin. If you gained weight because you were trying to stuff down the sadness of a miscarriage, you're still going to have deal with those feeling when you're thin. If you gained weight because you were deeply unhappy in your job, you're still going to be deeply unhappy with your job when you're thin.

@@CeresIsABetterPlanetThanPluto Well, I can definitely agree with that! It's just my personal experience is if I have the options of feeling like shit and being skinny or feeling like shit and having too much fat, I'll take being skinny anytime. Just because I physically feel a lot better. But yes, if your unhappiness initially comes from something entirely different, then you won't feel like a million bucks when you're thin.

    • @plumdutchess
      @plumdutchess 2 месяца назад +4

@@CeresIsABetterPlanetThanPluto Sure, but I can guarantee you that most people who are just a little overweight and unhappy about it, gained weight simply because they ate more calories than they burned. I eat too much, so I'm heavier than I should be. There's no deeper reason, it's that simple. I know I'll feel better and happier when I lose weight.

    • @MinieAnne
      @MinieAnne 2 месяца назад

@plumdutchess I don't think you can make generalities like that I'm fat but clearly more fit and have a good relationship with food than I was when I was skinnier and had a bad relationship with food. Sure I might eat more than I burn but I go to the gym often and love hiking, something that I never did when I was skinny. So overall I'm actually very happy about my physical strength.

I decided to be on a fat loss/fitness journey from the start instead of worrying about my weight. I've become a lot leaner and stronger, and my chronic pain is gone. (I don't have the words to explain what a huge deal **that** is.)
Having said all that, the number on the scales has barely moved; I think I might be heavier, and I don't care bc I'm heading towards my goal. If I focused solely on losing some kgs, I'd be skinny-fat and probably still in pain.
Still working on my mental health though. The physical/lifestyle changes have been a short-term distraction, but the same issues are still here. I appreciate this video as a reminder, bc I've become very astute at deceiving myself recently❤

Losing 70lbs changed my life. Most of my debilitating health issues went away and I'm 1000x more comfortable. I can lay in bed without feeling like the weight of my arms is crushing my circulation and get out of bed without grunting. Food doesn't control me any longer. If you are reading this, I'm telling you it's so worth the flight.
It didn't solve all my problems, but it did solve most of them. YMMV

I love your honesty Lucy, these are very much issues that are not discussed. I have lost weight a number of times and I've also found maintaining weight to be very difficult because of the underlying insecurities that the ideal weight actually triggers more. It's been a very long journey towards balance and happiness

  • @sarahh4457
    @sarahh4457 2 месяца назад +20

Hi, Lucy! It's great to see you again! 😃 🥰
Regarding point #5 @15:24... I have discovered that there are 2 types of hunger!
Within the last few months of my weight-loss journey, I stumbled across some information about the "carbohydrate-insulin model of obesity". Basically, when we eat carbohydrates, it will spike our hormone insulin, which causes us to store the carbohydrates as fat. If we eat too frequently or if we eat too many carbohydrates, the insulin doesn’t have a chance to come down and can lead to insulin resistance, which leads to a lot of symptoms and chronic diseases (like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, alzheimers, and many more!)
Conversely, eating less frequently ("time restricted eating" and/or intermittant fasting) and/or eating meals with a lower "glycemic load" will permit our insulin levels to drop enough between meals or at night that we can burn fat for fuel, instead of burning glucose for fuel. Eventually, this strategy can be used to reverse insulin resistance and many metabolic diseases!
This has been a HUGE shift in my thinking! 😳🤯. I really had no idea, before, that insulin controls our weight more than anything else!
"Eating less and moving more" usually invokes a high carb, low fat diet that is calorie restricted. Limiting calories naturally lowers insulin relative to what it was before, so that's why you can burn body fat. AKA: it works to lose weight. But in the meantime, you're underfueling your body and your BMR goes down. Plus, the carbs you eat trigger insulin release, which causes the body to store the food, which makes you hungry again sooner! And if you ate too many carbs, the insulin will overshoot and bring your blood glucose too low, which leads to an emergency-like hunger where you feel the need to eat NOW!
Conversely, if you focus on a diet and lifestyle that promote "metabolic flexibility" where your body can easily switch between burning fat and burning glucose for fuel, the hunger you may at times feel will seem a lot more stable! It won't be an emergency-type hunger. Any kind of low carb, higher-fat, "insulin-controlling" diet will work for this. (General low carb, very low carb, intermittent fasting, etc)
I like to follow @AutumnBates, where she promotes Protein, Fat, and Fiber, coupled with a low glycemic load style of eating (AKA low carb, approx

I’m very skeptical of this model. At the end of the day thermodynamics dictates weight fluctuations. You can eat nothing but twinkies and lose weight if you’re not getting enough calories. With that said you’ll probably feel ravenously hungry all the time if you eat said diet.
I think a better explanation for why higher protein diets work has more to do with satiety signals. Furthermore it seems that energy flux seems to help a ton. It’s easier to have 1000 calorie deficit if your daily burn is 3500 and you eat 2500 than if you’re completely sedentary with a burn rate of 2000 trying to eat only 1000 calories.

As someone who lost 80 lbs, I will say that losing weight made me happier. But, it didn't make me more confident. I was very confident in my large body because I had nothing to hide, -I couldn't hide. When I lost weight, I was suddenly very insecure about my loose skin, and how partners might feel cat-fished when they saw me in an intimate setting because suddenly I could hide the loose skin. When you're large, the people who choose to sleep with you know exactly what they're getting into before you ever think of taking off your clothes. But I was a lot happier when I was lost weight because I wasn't afraid of walking down the street and being judged. I could move in ways I couldn't before. I was no longer scared of going out and having fun and being seen because I didn't need to rely on my confidence anymore. And my confidence took a lot of energy to maintain when I was large. But when I lost weight, I could just exist and didn't have to worry about it anymore.

  • @miyoko_17
    @miyoko_17 2 месяца назад +22

That last point is GOLDEN. I recently figured that out on my own & I wish more ppl spoke about it! I think so much of the rhetoric is about how to "outsmart" the body:
    • If you know you get really hungry in the evening, "budget calories" to make dinner your largest meal -- if it's breakfast or lunch, same logic applies
    • Eat Volume foods
    • Drink more water
    • Up your protein intake to feel satisfied/full longer
    • Do activities to distract yourself, etc
These are all fantastic, don't get me wrong, BUT I wish someone had just said, "𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘴, 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘵, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘐𝘓𝘓 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘺. 𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘕𝘖𝘙𝘔𝘈𝘓, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵, 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘬."
For someone to point out that MINDSET is really the key to dealing w/the "hunger pains/cues" when in a deficit...it would've spared me so much time/energy/frustration 😅 Instead of "fighting" w/my body's natural instincts, just lean into it bc it's normal/natural & necessary for fat/weight loss.

Also I'd add that hunger doesn't actually have to feel bad. When you embrace it and realize it's just a function of your body and not to be afraid of it it doesn't hurt. And it makes you appreciate the food you have even more. It even makes food taste better when you eat.

We're complex social beings in a multitude of situations daily, so while our happiness is not completely dependable on our body it ducking helps because y'know we live in it and that's what we carry around to experience life. I've never heard of anyone who lost and maintained a healthy weight saying that they wish they went back to having excess weight because they were happier that way.

i was in great shape once. won several natural bodybuilding contests. being in great shape can be quite stressful. always worrying you don't look good enough, or believing you look better than you actually do. believing people care about how you look when most people could care less. or a few people want to hang out with you simply because they want what you have, not really because they like you.

Hi Lucy, it's so great that you're back on RUclips. I love your videos! I had two points to share on the hunger. I've always struggled with being hungry, and always thinking about food. My stomach was a bottomless pit. During Ramadan in covid, I fasted 30 days from sunrise until sunset during summer time so from 3am until 9pm and I managed to lose weight and also reduce my appetite. I controlled my portions and was very intentional about food. But it consumed me and one slip up meant that that after about 3 months I fell back into poor eating habits.
Then in 2022 I got diagnosed with ADHD. I'm a woman in my thirties btw and I never thought I had ADHD because the diagnostic criteria has been based on men (obviously). I got medicated and a side effect of the medication is it curbs your appetite. Its the same medication used for binge eating disorders and for the first time, food stopped controlling my life and my thoughts. I lost weight and maintained the weight loss without needing to workout. Working out became about strength and fun rather than keeping weight off. One day I didn't take my medication and I was ravenous. The same levels of hunger I lived all my life with and I hated the feeling of hunger. But getting medicated for ADHD has given me a freedom I never thought possible. You should check out a video by Dina Tokio on her first day with ADHD medication and how saddening it was for her to realise she could function without hunger consuming her the way that it did. SHe's massively into calisthenics now too and she's awesome.
Just wanted to share this :)

Being sick or in pain makes most people unhappy. That's a bit more likely if you are overweight and a lot more likely if you are obese. So, short term, while losing weight will not bring lasting happiness because the initial sense of achievement is replaced by a focus on other problems, if maintained then a good weight will reduce the risk of unhappiness (because of illness and pain) as you get older.

One often overlooked negative aspect is the effect that being hungry and monitoring your calories has on your personality and social interactions around food . Maybe you have less energy , are a little more cranky and more quick to pass up that piece of pie at risk of hurting somebody's feelings .You are no longer the jolly easy-going fat person and a lot of people who expect weight loss to look effortless may have a problem with that .

As someone that has gone through depression, losing a close family member.. I can say I have faced much harder hardships than just weight loss. I built my life back up, got my own apartment, and built up my career. I decided to lose weight, but not just losing weight. I wanted to be fit, healthier, and eat better. When you're eating healthy and lose the bad food choices like ultra processed food it does make me happier and feel better. I went from overweight to fit, lost like 20kg. Losing weight severely restricting yourself doesn't really work. I did research and set up a plan for a long term diet and maintenance. During my weight loss journey i didnt really have much hunger, because i focused on a high protein, whole grain diet. Protein helps to keep you full for longer times.

I find that having consistency in my training is essential for a maintaing a healthy diet. In times when I am inactive - and especially if I am more mentally stressed I find eating healthy quite hard, and more often give in for temptations. When I have a larger focus on being active and get that in to a routine, eating healthy just happens by itself. I get less cravings and naturally choose healthier ingredients and meals.
Also for me it is so much more important to have a strong body that lets me do the activities I want, or the tasks that I need, than to be thin. Being thin won't help me carry my bags of firewood or shuffle the snow in the winter - also more musclemass is key for a quicker recovery if you get sick. Atm I am around 15 kgs overweight and probably my view on this had been different if I had more excess weight, but for where I am in this moment - this works for me. And as I focus on my fitness and strenght, the scales slowly but surely creeps down. My strenght and energy though keeps growing at a much faster pace.

I was obese as a teenager and I can't help but feel like it derailed my life. I also had male breasts as a result of genetics. I got teased a lot. Even after getting down to 180lbs and shredded, I needed chest surgery. After all that, I have a tremendous weight off my mind (and body lol) much less anxiety than ever. The unfortunate part of being fit is that people assume your entire personality and lifestyle is around being fit. For me, being fit is simply a prerequisite for a healthy life, not my entire world. I guess a lot of people struggle with that idea and project it on me. Edit: hard part is that I can still eat more food than anybody I know. There's a constant psychological restriction to manage. Fiber and water doesn't help because it's calories my body wants, not empty foods. That's probably the biggest struggle from time to time

The only thing I didn’t hear and maybe it’s been touched on in other videos….
Inflammation in the body is what causes the excess weight and getting rid of inflammation is another important key as well as pushing those electrolytes!!!
Push those GOOD electrolytes for intracellular hydration so that the body doesn’t pull from intracellular and cause extra cellular puffiness, edema, making you pee more when you drink water which can cause frustration and sometimes causes people to drink less water which causes the problem to spiral.

Thank you very much for this video. I tend to overthink everything. My brain trmds to go into danger-mode within seconds and exhausts me mentally. I am going this journey the opposite way. I used to do sports up to 6 times a week. Enjoying different types of sport and just having fun. After having moved and working fulltime, I just lost that connection. This frustrates me a lot and I get into vicious cycles of feeling quite good or physically weak. And I tend to be mentally low, especially when I'm feeling weak. Which then turns into a downward spiral. Getting out of this often happens when I'm quite busy again.
So, in a nutshell: I'm either busy and mentally and physically happy and not bothering about anything. Or I have some time which my brain just uses up with negative thoughts and that exhausts me.
Do you have any tips on what you tend to do if you're feeling weak or too tired?
    Take care

Weight loss does not equal happiness.
Gaining weight is a symptom of a deeper cause.
Dig deeper than the physical body.
Address your problems and understand why I'm where I am.
Re wire my brain to see and do things differently.
    Body dysmorphia is real
Healthy is more than physical, it's mental too!
Weight loss: less in, expend more energy out, create Ms a deficit, thus weight loss.
Maintenance - fluctuates and constantly changing
Manage expectations: healthy body, healthy mind, flexible approach to life and weight loss; getting to a specific weight and staying there isn't realistic; life continuously changes and those changes can and will affect my weight. This is a lifelong journey . Don't be hard on myself
Consistency over intensity: consistency is key; I will burnout with eating and exercise. I have to remember to get back to it.
Fundamentals over fads. Don't try to do everything, diet, exercise, workout plans. Learn from the mistakes and failures. Do research, learn from experiences and different perspectives I have encountered.
Exercise is not required to lose weight. It's all about nutrition. Exercise assists with weight loss.
    Healthy body is longevity.
Exercise - just enjoy moving your body; functional body is necessary for living life. Don't over think exercises
Feeling of Hunger: I don't necessarily like the feeling of hunger 😮 losing weight will call for a certain amount of hunger!!! It's all about balance -create deficits for weight loss, enjoyment of the foods I like, being mindful of my portions.

Weight yoyo-er here. Being skinny has only highlighted the other insecurities I've had with my body. At least while overweight, I could tell myself I'll be pretty when I lose the weight. While skinny, what do I do with crippling body dysmorphia over my facial features. Obsess over plastic surgery and assume every undesirable reaction I get is because the other person is offended by how ugly I am. That's what.

Consistency over intensity. I'm more into lifting (though I have run a successful cut or to) and oh man. So many n00bs either:
    - think they're going to get super strong from one hard weekend session
    - lose all their weight from one grueling cardio blast
They don't want the Slow & Sustainable™ route. The biggest factor in achieving our goals is TIME. It takes time to get strong. Time to get big. Time to drop weight.
    Consistency over intensity, indeed.

I'm not sure I agree with any of the 'problems'. I love my body post-weight loss. Yes, there are flaws due to the damage weight gain did but that's normal and there's no reason to try and change something normal. I'll take those flaws a hundred times over dozens of lbs of extra fat and obesity. I'm happier, healthier and more confident. I'm not ashamed when looking at a candid picture of myself and am more comfortable physically and mentally in every aspect of my life. Health issues have disappeared. I can be on my feet all day and not get blisters and sore for days because my skeleton wasn't meant to hold that much weight. It's also infinitely easier to maintain weight than lose weight. You know your approximate needed calories if you lost the weight the right way. Stick to that - which again - is much easier than being on a deficit long term. if you gain a couple in a month, be honest with yourself and scale back on treats for a bit and it should fall right off. It's a myth you gain it back when you stop your diet. You gain it back because you start a shit diet of excess food and it takes time.

last year I was 70kg and now 90kg, and my highest weight was 100kg. I do some film work and music performance and I kind of had a goal of having abs for once. But I worked out I'd need to be around 65kg for that. I never got there and I'm happier now I'm 20 kg heavier. (a lot of numbers sorry) I also qualified as a PT but never worked as one. At 70kg all I could see was the fact I had a faint 4 pack and not a prominent 6 pack and the extra 5kg of fat I couldn't seem to loose. I'm quite fat now ha, but I am happier. I'd slim down for a great role on a show, I'd do it for my health, when I'm ready. I won't do it so people like me more, again ha. I don't have a GF now at 90kg. And I didn't attain one at 70kg either. That grass isn't greener :)
