As an ADHD girlie, intuitive eating has done me dirty too many times in the past. Running and mechanical eating practices have helped me keep my mind free of food noise and get my blood sugar and weight under more control.
Can you elaborate about mechanical eating practices or what that means? Fellow ADHD girlie here!
I think mechanical eating means to eat at regular timed intervals, so more structured eating, instead of relying on hunger cues that may not be accurate. For example, sometimes those of us with ADHD don't eat for hours because we are preoccupied, or the thought doesn't cross our minds, but also on the other hand... may binge eat due to either not eating enough in the day, or because of emotional dysregulation. So really just making sure you're eating set meals at set times, regardless of hunger.
SAME! Especially because not only am I an ADHD runner, I also have PCOS. I’m so tired of being gaslit into eating “intuitively”. Eating intuitively is how I ended up obese and prediabetic. My intuitions want me to gain weight. I’m much happier and healthier just following some common sense and flexible but responsible nutrition guidelines.
I’m not diagnosed. I feel like my symptoms are not as serious to have to seek out diagnosis. But I do struggle with ADHD tendencies. It made me so happy to hear this because I keep getting healthier and losing weight but my hunger cues have not regulated and I thought it was a me problem. And now I have no problem eating on a schedule and accepting the hungry after reading this
THIS!! I just don't think ADHD and intuitive eating go together. Eating on a schedule and tracking my intake has done wonders for me.
Love that you said trying to be in a calorie deficit and performing your best are two different things. That put it in to perspective so much!
This was grrrrrrreat I found this soooo validating. Everytime I start to work out, I’m good for the first week and the next week I go absolutely HAM and eat ridiculous, copious, and unhealthy amounts of food. And I’m like what the hell why the hell am I so starving????? It’s not talked about enough! Not at all!
Yeah me too but then my body gets used to it and I kinda lose my appetite
Gosh I would EAT UP more conversations like this. Bring on people who have gained weight for health, for fertility, women who have lost weight for health, gained muscle, chose a different form of movement, paused movement for HA recovery, etc.
I’ve been thinking about this. Running made me super hungry in the beginning, but now I’m used to it. I do think I need to start weight training again tho. I have no strength since I’ve made running my main priority.
do it! i've gotten back into weights the last few months and it makes running more enjoyable
It’s definitely an adjustment finding time / energy for everything. Switching to a full body split has made it a lot more manageable for me!
The only reason I strength train is because last year I did my first half marathon with zero leg strength training. I did stretch daily though but that wasn't enough. I developed such severe runners knee it made it impossible to keep running. After I seen a video on why strength training for running is extremely important to prevent injuries. So now I implement 4-5 times a week strength training plus daily 4-6 miles running. And Zero Knee pain!!! I'll never stop strength training. Also I'm a slow runner average 9:30 -10 min mile. So no I'm not professional just focusing on my health
I took up running at the beginning of my weight loss journey and fell in love with it. Fast forward to 10 years later and now age 46 in perimenopause, I am switching things up to include a fast paced walk with a weighted vest. I average about 5 miles and do this a couple days a week along with pilates, yoga and strength training. My body is in the best shape it's ever been! I also do OMAD most days and intuitve eating. It's all about balance and finding what works best for your age and body!
Running has been great my mental health. Probably not great for my weight loss but wow it's been nice for first time in adult life to go na, i want performance in my running more than i care about looking a certain way.
Same for me! I’m a high school teacher and some days I desperately need a nice run but it comes with waves of hunger. I have learned to cope with it by doing evening runs, it’s too close to bed time so I don’t over eat afterwards. Can’t do morning runs though!!! lol
I've been running for probably 3 years with consistent goal races in the 1/2 to full marathon length. I've lost a little weight, leaned out some. But its taken TIME. And consistently doing 20-40 miles/week. I never feel guilty for stuffing my face after a long run day. I freaking earned it. Distance running is no joke. Addicting as heck though 😅
i used to be a runner and i was really great results with it! but it was NEVER sustainable... and then I hired a trainer and she got me to lift wieights, and do active recover with pilates. At the same time, I changed my diet to a primarily animal fat and protein base diet (carnivor... before I was mostly vegetarian), and now I FEEL MY BEST and my BODY is the LEANEST it's ever been!!!
What type of instruction did you use for pilates (e.g. in-person classes, online video)? If it was online, could you share the source?
Running does help me lose weight quickly just as long as I drink lotsa water And run before dinner time so my hunger goes away. What I did find outt was jump rope is the best cardio. It actually makes my running better! I follow phoenix girl and I’m loving it.
I am almost 41 years old and quit running last May, because we caught pertussis. However during those weeks I noticed how much better I felt WITHOUT the running. I did not pick it back up after the pertussis cleared. I feel like to enjoy getting better at running, your life needs to evolve around it. The amount of planning needed for getting the sessions in, but also fueling in the right way before and after is just crazy. Having a family with 2 young kids, a dog, a household, a husband and a job, I was either stressing to get a session in or f*cking hangry because I did not take the time to fuel properly. It is not worth it to me anymore. I stick with 4 heavy lifting sessions and 1 sprint training and 1 HIIT per week. Feels so much better!
Abby,
I honestly love what you do and agree with what you’re saying about athletes. A lot of these people have training as their full time job with multiple specialists involved. But also sometimes what we trying to do needs to just be scaled down, it’s not always as “hard” as it seems. Be kinder to yourself ❤
This makes a lot of sense. When I first started running, I lost a lot of the weight I had gained when I was focused on powerlifting and strength. But then I started training for a 10k and I gained a little bit of the weight back. Once I’m done with the race I definitely plan on scaling back my training so then I could lose that last few pounds again.
I love this!! Just started on my journey of walking up to 20K a day on my treadmill while working. I have a standing desk and treadmill for it, and its been a battle! The soreness is real. I'm at 2.5K-5K a day now, slowly working my way up to 20K.
I simply cannot type and walk at the same time! I have a desk I made for my treadmill but it's only for when I need to read or listen to training. How do you walk and type successfully?
Loving this deep dive style! Curious to learn more from you!
Ooo! Love your new set up 🙌🏿! I’m excited for this video 😍. I’ve had this question for years 🥰.
Thank you! Experimenting with a new format so I appreciate your feedback 🥰
Yes to this 🙏 the hunger I feel after a long run is crazy .. I've adjusted my intake to combat this and will eat an extra meal before a long run. But I still want to put everything in my mouth a few hours after 😆
Love the long-form content, our engineering queen!
Please do more videos like this! Love it
I am 8 months pp after baby #3. Currently 5 weeks preggers with baby #4.
I am about 20-ish lbs overweight (excess fat).
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS BODY TO BE BEHIND ME. Oh, how I hope to achieve the body I desire (strong, flexible, mobile, good endurance = toned). I try not to get discouraged by the constant set backs & my body reacting so slow to changes & efforts. It's so difficult & such a mental challenge (to push thru).
I can't run (cause I'm so out of shape) but I'm walking daily & hopefully once baby is born i can train up to running. I've had to deal with knee pain then back pain because I was too eager & also had bad form. Fixed those & well I hope I can come back & share good reports in a few months 😬🥲
Great info!! The longer videos are nice!
Off topic- it’s interesting how your voice has changed so much these recent years, like you developed/switched to vocal fry (actual term)
I too reacted to the change in voice. Not sure it's "just" an increase in vocal fry, but potentially an effect of excess vocal strain. Hoping the long form content isn't too demanding!
It’s mostly vocal strain but I’ve noticed it too 🥲 between instructing for the app and filming for social, I talk a lot more than I used to. Feel like I need a vocal warm up or something haha.
@@abbypollockI'd recommend getting a few sessions with a vocal coach or speech therapist - it will save you a lot in the long run (pun sort of intended) :) Wishing you the best!
@@abbypollock We appreciate all your hard work!! 🥰
She’s a mom and talks all the time for her job give her a break she’s probably tired 😭❤️❤️
I felt seen with this video😂 i mean i wasnt trying to actively lose weight when i started running, but when instarted gaining 5kg instead of losing it…. I went mad, i stopped running daily now, only about once a week and im back to my initial weight… what you said is 100% true.
Random but your skin is GLOWING
Yes please!! More stuff like this, Abby! Love your videos and miss seeing them! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Can u make a video about PCOS
please absolutely more of this!!
This was great! I would love more content like this 🙌🏼
any exercise makes u hungry😂
Yea walking works a lot better for weightloss
Agreed. Much simpler to manage.
I had been running for about 15 years and yes it keeps you lean and pretty but I got knee and back injury. So currently I keep doing my walking!
Yes!!!!! …. And it doesn’t hurt your joints
@@PbLigandrunning doesn't hurt your joints, that's a misunderstanding of how people get injured through running. many people take on too much distance/time running too quickly and don't progress, causing injury and pain in the joints. but when you build up slowly, it's shown that people who run have stronger joints, not weaker ones. same is true for walking. if you barely do 2500 steps per day, you can't expect to not have pain if you shoot up to 10K steps for a week. it's the timeline of it that is the issue, not the activity itself
Love the long form content!
So relatable! Love this
Interesting. I’ve been losing a lot of weight since I started running and doing strength training too. I find it odd how some people can maintain their weight. I think you have to eat copious amounts of food to either get fat or maintain your weight if you run more than 10k a day.
Very interesting and very validating.
Running helped me lose 30lbs.
Running man here, currently in my late 30s married with kids. Personally I love running because it allows me my personal space away from family and relaxation away from the busy day of work. I found that when I focus on the enjoyment of running I tend to lose more weight. In contrast, I lose less weight when I run to lose weight. 😂
I don't run, i walk instead and it has made me loose weight.
So, would you suggest to eat after running to prevent hunger?
I am in my early 40’s and run don’t help in losing weight. As a runner 🏃 I know that by my own experience. 😊
Great information!!😊❤
i’ve slowly lost about 35 pounds over the course of a year running 20-30 miles a week but when i started i was a overweight. i don’t feel like it makes me ravenous
When I ran my first marathon, I gained almost 15 pounds. And at 5'1" that's a LOT. Thanks for this!
I will say I see your views, however, I have been using CICO method and running and I have lost 30 pounds. Still working towards losing more weight, but I am being patient with myself.
This is interesting
1:13 never knew that I was dehydrated while running. When I used to run more frequently I would always need to use the bathroom after coming back home and it got worse the more I trained in running. It wasn't the only reason I stopped running regularly but certainly did contribute
This is sooo helpful, thank you!!
Now, from my personal experience I had thenopposite happen. Running made me less hungry and i started eating less. I suspect the large reason behined this is running helped immensly with my UC which caused havoc in my digestive system. Running had the strange effecr of aort of... helping thongs work properly.because of that my body worked properly.
2 runs a day!!!!!!!! But what about bone turnover, what about injuries!!!
I'd love to get to try LMNT, but they don't ship to Europe😭
Running is always something I’ve wanted to be good at, and I recently decided to actually get into it. How do I go about making my average run time faster? My current average is about 15minutes, but I’d like to get down to 10.
Damn weight training made me 1000% times more than cardio.
She keeps receipts 😂😂
Not sure if you’ve made a video about this already. I also had a baby a few months ago… did you do anything to balance your hormones post pregnancy?
I’m eating healthy and working out just like prior to pregnancy but I can’t seem to get this 5 lbs off. Any recommendations ?
Tried intermittent fasting? It definitely affects your hormones and you'll drop weight immediately
@@Madamchief i do 16/8. Feel like I have not seen a change and I’ve been consistent for the past 4 months
@@karina_esthi1738 dang that's usually so effective. I lost so much so fast on 16/8 that my hair fell out 😅 I wasn't eating enough protein. These days, I'm emphasizing weight training so I have to eat more but I care less about my weight and more about body composition
@@Madamchief loosing my hair too but that’s just post Partum lol
I might need to work on my hormones? Idk feeling so lost right now
@@karina_esthi1738 😭 I feel you. Hair is so much a part of our identity
i have just started running, not for weight loss, for overthinking and anxiety, it helps a ton
i do want to lose weight
i run 4km maybe twice a week so i don’t think it’s going to mess around with my hunger too much
however i do struggle with the calorie deficit, i don’t want to count calories, because i previously had ed
but i also want to lose weight
so i kinda incorporate body weight training and pilates and try to walk everyday, i hope it will work out 🦫
but the video was right on time do give me a better understanding of what i should focus on
I am in the same boat re previous DE (in my case) and so dont want to restrict, bc it starts to feel really good. Menopause has put like 12 pounds on me but I am so aftaid to count calories and all of that! Food luck to you!
This is truth! Glad you brought words to this. But "your body is petty". Yikes.
It's a joke.
Belly dancing for fertility lol? Topic
You found out you were pregnant at 6 months?
who does half marathon or marathon training to loose weight lol thats crazy.
ofcourse you will get injuried with no weight lost
Thank you for making this video, these exact thoughts have been on my mind a lot as I am at the end of my weight loss journey and have set the HM as my goal for 2025. I would love to hear you speak more about this, I find it both helpful and very soothing to not be alone with all this contradiction information in regards to maintaining weight loss and building strength for running.
Diet for fat loss.
Lift for muscle and definition. Run for cardiovascular health and other benefits ❤
About 10 years ago some friends invited me to join their running group. I was ravenous all the time and I never got the runners high people talk about. So I just stick to walking and weights. I go through cycles of weight loss and gain.
Eh idk about y’all but I lost over 100 pounds by running and it’s ALL about nutrition. If you wanna lose weight by running you must eat your CARBS and that’s how I did it and never got hungry. Different exercises REQUIRE different nutrition. Think if a bodybuilder never ate protein 😅 yikes. In my opinion running is for people who like to eat because if you try to starve or restrict yourself you will actually stall OR gain weight.
When I lost the most weight and got in the best shape was when I started Chloe thing workouts plus I started running 5k around 3 times a week and I never noticed my appetite increased. However when I started weightlifting OMG I have never been so hungry in my life. It was crazy! I also just gained weight and I just didn’t like the way my body was looking, I got “big” and of course with how hungry I was. So now I’m back with Chloe and my running trying to get my shape back.
I guess I accidentally did the right thing in my weight loss journey haha! I was already running consistently twice a week, less than 5 miles generally each run. I kept that the same and then started to eat in a conservative calorie deficit. It felt pretty easy and I was rarely SUPER hungry. I started introducing weight lifting near my goal weight, and that's when I did start getting hunger attacks! Fortunately, I was already used to tracking and did my best to continue in a slight calorie deficit, but some days it was HARD, not gonna lie. I probably could lose more weight, but I wanted to start training for a half marathon. So now I'm just eating maintenance calories. I give props to all the Reddit peeps who were constantly saying "You can't train for a hard race AND lose weight. They are counterintuitive."
Why have I lost so much weight since starting running? I don't want to be that person but it literally fell off. Doing average 15km a week and my diet is the same as pre runner me.
Thank you for making this video, Abby. I made some of these mistakes when I started losing weight, so hopefully people who are on their journey won’t make the same mistakes I did.
So glad to see/hear you on a science based chatty video
You look decent for being in your 40s!
When you love to run, you eat to run not run to eat!
Love all your long form content!
Going on walks made me skinny .
