My 401k just started with the company I'm with. I'm almost 58 and this is the first time I've been with a company that has one. I'm so excited. I know its late but it's better now than never!
I started late too. I started with the company match. Then each time I got a raise, I just put that in the 401K. Just forget about the raise, just save it. Also never borrow from the 401. I have retired and I am so thankful I have that extra money.
I loaned a friend $100. I told myself it’s a gift to her and I didn’t want it back. That didn’t affect our friendship. What affected our friendship is when she asked for more money without acknowledging what I’d already “loaned” her. I am not a bank.
I'm 60yrs old and recommend giving attention to the health of your body. Eg making home-made yoghurt to increase calcium. And Google healthy food for brain, bones and heart. We can eat healthy foods too my friends 😋 Take good care of your body and live to enjoy your body for livelong years 😉
I work for a small business, so they don’t have a retirement plan... I am striving to be frugal and a minimalist. I am a work in progress still...I have learned that I don’t need anything on the walls, home decor, hate paper towels, and I find ways to cut back on toiletries, and cleaning supplies
My son had paper route in 4 th grade till graduated high school save have spent half now owns multi million dollar company and his wife also owns multi million company I gave him the tools to save and reach high while staying grounded
the nice thing about a good amount of wealth is the security factor/ feeling... of course many ppl do not need or want that feeling.... they prefer things...
I started late in life with a 401k. Over the last 2 years I've increased it to 20%. I work quite a bit of overtime so that has made a huge impact. My bills are pretty minimal. I have a second job cleaning houses. That paycheck goes into saving. I'm always looking for ways to cut expenses.
Awesome Kate! (Loved seeing Buns and photo bombing Kaden 😃). I’m trying to get more intensely focused on saving. Getting the spending plan (aka budget) sharpened this weekend. The celebs are fun. I saw Tyra Banks say she dropped a popsicle in an elevator and was considering picking it up to finish it. A celeb with her said “Tyra, don’t you dare”! Now that’s reaaally frugal 😝
Good morning, jumped on to listen to you, I am ending my holiday this week so I was happy to watch you this morning. When you have enough money in the bank you tummy is not upset. Life is free when you tell your money where to go. Keep up the great work Kate. Love your videos!
Our time is worth money. We need to use it wisely for our own benefit; we also need to recognize our ability to use it to build social capital! Priceless!
Another shout-out to my local library: twice a year they have a used book sale and I've availed myself of some very nice cheap books, as well as DVDs! I love movies and I have a portable DVD player, and I can get used DVDs at the sale for $1 or at most $2 each. So far none of them have been damaged in any way.
I was just in Newport RI and Jay Leno lives in a huge home and property overlooking the water there. I guess his saving really worked! It was beautiful. FYI Judge July lives across the road. 😊
Great tips from all these superstars lol!! I’m still doing my meal plans, coupons and putting emergency money away each month. It’s exhausting but nice to see my account growing. Love you and Buns!
Hello Kate, Just recently subbed and wanted to say how much I am loving and at 65 yrs old learning lots of new ways to be frugal! You have a great community here, love reading all the comments and all the knowledge from everyone! We have a 13 yr old doxie but I must say Donna had fallen head over heels in love with Mr. Bunns! Well going to watch more now! You are very inspiring! Donna in the NE GA mountains!
Welcome to the family!!! I’m so glad you are here! Oh yes Buns loves hanging out during the videos. You will see him a ton😻 Thank you for your kind words❤️ See you more soon!!!
My husband and I have a financial advisor that we trust. I really like that I can discuss different options with him and decide what will be the most beneficial for us.
Margaret Atwood is an icon here in Canada, both for her novels and her feminism which are often the same thing. I read the Handmaid's Tale a few decades before it became a production. Great book. It has stuck with me ever since, especially during covid, the part where you can't use cash and they take away the women's bank cards. And I think she wrote that book before bank cards were even a thing....
I even put automatically extra payments for this saving challenge until November in my savings account each month and I my opcoming budgets. So I finish on a win anyway. 🎊
LOVE your channel, Kate! I'm laser focused on eliminating my debt right now. Still adding some savings to my buffer and SOS fund. Every six months, I'm increasing my 401K contribution by 1% (bit by bit). Listening to you keeps me going -- thank you!! And I've been thinking about you and sweet Buns all day -- I hope his surgery went well and that you're both recovering well. 💕😻
Love it Kate! I practice the no IOU. I’d rather just give the money if I have it than to be bothered by trying to get it back. I always say to my friends and family that borrowing money can ruin relationships so to avoid it no borrowing 😂 love the contents of your channel. You have continued inspiring me to be frugal and wise with my money. Keep safe 😘
Happy frugal Friday Kate 👍 Taking inventory 🙌 I adjust & evaluate this all the time, when I use it up I ask do I really need this again? then laugh coz I usually reply nope 😂 I've minimised my inventory so much. Autopay is direct debit here and electricity provider gives a discount for doing it so worth checking that out. Thanks for putting this together. 💙 I have an eclectic taste in music so tips from musicians is an interesting twist to this topic. So chuffed for you that your job is working out 😊 You made me think of Cher's Turn back time 🎶 😂 I was just watching your survival & emergency fund videos the other day! "Show me your budget..." so true 👍 Save & Give now 💙 Saving money 🙌
Happy weekend Sandra!! Thank you so so much for watching and sharing with us. Love seeing your name on my screen and your takeaways each week. I look forward to reading your messages! Appreciate you so much!
Since I've started watching your videos I've seen a 200$ a month improvement in my checking account that I'm now investing in my stock account. Giving you a big thumbs up 👍. The improvements are the control in my impulse buying. Thank you mi amiga
what i do is that i take stock of stuff that i have and stuff that it is necessary and what i do with leftover bottles i double them up so that i am gettig more out of the item(s)
Another great video, Kate. I wanted to help the channel by commenting but there were just so many thought-provoking things you and the people you quoted said that I didn't know where to start. So I'll just say all your inspiration and enthusiasm have been such a huge help to me. I am going to venture forth and STOMP that emergency fund and STOMP those retirement savings! Or, as you said so eloquently, BOOM!! :)
Is a 401k the equivalent of a pension in the UK? We pay into pensions from our monthly salary. And now people have to opt-out if they don’t want a pension. I’ve always been not great with money, but thankfully for the last 20 years I’ve paid into a pension. 😊
Is there a way the K squad can start a project to educate younger people like your son, teenagers or in their twenties ? You might already have a younger audience on other social media. Listening to this video again today, the question kept popping in my head because I know that at a young age you can learn new behaviour / habbits way easier and don't first have to work on the bill of prior choises...
I tried to save 500 a month and its hard but it's doable. I work extra 3 to 4 hours on my day off and quit working too much ot and I felt much better. Right now I'm in tune of health
I shop at local farmers and stores and at my Natural Food store they put the meat that gets close to best before into tue freezer the day before and mark it down 30% ...that is how I buy my meat and it is grass-fed/pasture-raised which is important to me as a Holistic Nutritionist because the nutrition is higher in those ... so I save money by not needing supplements
What do you do if your spouse is not on board with minimal living and financial planning? We have separate checking accounts because we don’t agree. Any advice?
In my 20s, I was miserable working for a boss from hell. Decided to get a transfer once I would rather go to the dentist/doctor than go to work. Became wiser after that, I simply quit the next job, and never allowed myself to be that miserable again.
Financial planner - it is wise to meet with a financial planner as you approach retirement. They can give you advice on how to invest using tax free options. One doesn't want to have all their hard earned savings being taxed.
"Don't ask [questions] from your broke uncle," he might be the one to ask! Ask him about his mistakes and what he could have done differently. He might be a wealth of knowledge!
I love this idea. I'm a financial advisor. I'm going to use this tip with my clients. Most pensioners in Canada are only paid at the end of the month, if we are withdrawing from other investments I like to deposit funds mid-month to help them budget. Your idea might be even better!
Just gave money for a car battery to a family member, didn't expect to get it back. We were surprised to get it back a little later. Sometimes family does pay you back. :)
Kate. It says this video is 11 months old. I have a 401 k and i opened a Roth IRA months ago. My 401k ive had for 23 years... Question? Have you seen how much money we have lost in the 401k the last couple of months? It's sad. We put so much more in to our 401. You think we should focus on Roth IRA better?
On the subject of retirement plans at work, it is a good idea to check your plan regularly to be sure that all of your payroll deductions and employer contributions have reached your account. If there are missing payments you need to talk with your HR department. I remember how happy I was with Walmart when I found that my contributions hit my account on payday just like my pay hit my checking account.
I wish I could select a date with all my bills to autopay ( all my smaller bills together for the 1st of the month and the 15th for my rent). I pay most that will me allow to select the date of my choice but have one I can’t change😡😡
Really? Oh what a bummer!!! Normally they let you pick. Yea it'd be great to sync them all up. Hope you are having a good weekend Naturegirl. Thanks for being here!
"when did everything become about money" When wages stagnated while cost of living outpaced it. I'm pretty positive when it comes to my financial outlook, but I still believe that a lot of older folks are really out of touch with the financial reality younger people face nowadays.
Agree with you. When I was young we didn't have a cell phone bill, Netflix or internet bill. Cable was very cheap and so were land lines. Everything is a lot higher now such as food, car insurance, health insurance and of course rent among other things. It's no wonder my 25 yr old niece doesn't want to move out of her parents home.
@@uptowncountry1993 yeah, you have a valid point. That reminds me, I found a Disney World ticket the other day from the early 90's, the entrance cost was around $34 for an adult!!!!🤯
I don't think older people are out of touch about money, they just lived in an Era that made do with what they had. They respected what they had and repaired if necessary. Young people today have too much, throw away a lot of stuff and have to have the newest and better version of something. Should we go through hard times soon, the older people will survive. The younger people will complain.
@@patriciacerwin6266 Older people (I mean Baby Boomers) didn't have today's expenses when they were young adults, like internet bills and phone plans, without which you can't get a good job. You need a decent computer that can handle Zoom interviews, too. Older people didn't have a credit score that young either, and credit scores determine your interest rate on a car to get you to work, as well as your deposit for rental and utilities. Appliances that were built to last are now built to break down and be replaced. We don't _have_ too much, we _need_ to spend a larger proportion of our income to have the same quality of life older people had for less, at the same age.
What good is Jay Leno’s millions (cuz you know it’s jabillions) good for sitting in a bank? My mom grew up in Norway very poor and we grew up pretty well in Canada from my dad’s career. And with my mom being so frugal, she saved more money than my dad did years after their divorce. One time she gave me and my sister money for downpayment on a house saying she didn’t want to wait to die for her kids to get some of her money. So saving is good and sharing is also good when you can.
My 401k just started with the company I'm with. I'm almost 58 and this is the first time I've been with a company that has one. I'm so excited. I know its late but it's better now than never!

See if you can throw as much into it as you can afford to so that you can maximize the matching contributions from your employer!

I give my time now that I am not unemployed!
Thank you for watching and sharing with us Denise!
