Social media companies use automated content moderation to cut down on costs. These algorithms often flag content from Black users as hateful while allowing non-Black users to attack, harass and demean Black people. The algorithms reflect the bias and lack of understanding of the people who program them.
Studies have shown that social media platforms also use algorithms to suppress content that brings visibility to Black issues. Platforms like Twitter, TikTok, Twitch & Facebook aren’t protecting us from harassment. Even worse, their algorithms, are driving us off their platforms.
