Join us as we explore something different from our usual JDM car reviews. This is about the pureness and appreciation of driving in Japan on Japanese touge. We met a Japanese car enthusiast while filming the AE111 / AE86 video who volunteered to assist us in the action shots in his classic but also rare version of the Caterham Super Seven kit car made in the U.K. A car with no compromises to a pure driving experience and feeling. Built with the same concept as a Formula chassis car with an old school thinking that never gets old or boring. Provided you can accept the lack of comfort and conveniences, with its old Ford 1.6 litre carburetor 120PS engine, this is motoring in its rawest form. Find out Takuma san's reason and philosophy behind his choice for this car.
His car is a alternative version of the Lotus Caterham Super Seven. Although purists may consider this as a 'copy' or 'imitation' of the more popular Lotus. But there is a number of differences in the specification and built that has certain improvements. The brief story of Westfield is as below.
Westfield Sportscars are manufacturers of both factory built and kit versions of several two-seater, open top sportscars. Their main product line is a Lotus Seven inspired car - vehicles originally designed by Colin Chapman with only the bare essentials for motoring in order to give the rawest and most exhilarating driving experience.
Whilst Caterham Cars bought the rights from Lotus Cars, Chris Smith set up a rival company and manufactured kits with very similar styling and construction. This led Caterham to threaten litigation (based on Industrial design rights) in the late 1980s which was eventually settled out of court and resulted in Westfield improving and changing the design of their cars. Whilst externally sharing a common look, Westfield and Caterham cars are somewhat different in construction. Westfield prefers to employ the same glass fibre body method that Lotus has traditionally used for their other models such as the Elise, Esprit, and Elan, rather than the aluminium used by Caterham.
Westfield has also pioneered technical innovations such as Independent rear suspension and a wider chassis, which other manufacturers have since adopted. The company has recently introduced a version of its SEi kit that uses donor parts from the Mazda Mx5 Miata. This is generally called an SDV (Single Donor Vehicle) kit. There is also an SDV kit that uses a Ford Sierra as a donor. The wide range of drivetrain configurations available to Westfield customers now includes the Honda S2000 engine and gearbox as part of the company's MegaS2000 kit and cars.

    It's my car.
    Thank you for watching!
There are many kinds of car rides, but it's fun that you can't find anywhere else.
I think the Seven is the prototype and final model of the car!
There is an unspeakable charm, so let's all become the Seven Family!
I'm using an English interpreter, so my English is bad!
    I can only understand Japanese.

It's worth saying (can confirm, Westfield owner here) that Westfields overall are pretty unusual since they only build ~400 cars every year. They're normally built in batches of 5, and most of them use the same chassis (Westfield XTR-2/4, and Westfield XI are exceptions to this). That model would be rare regardless of where it is (especially Japan)

@@garymurraya I am owning a caterham and have also worked on westfield. They are similar but different. Caterham is not based on the orignal car it is the orignal car, as caterham got the all drawings etc from lotus, when collin wasn´t interested in the car anymore. Westfield build a complete new car which was based on the s7 idea. The westfield later had individual suspension at the front and rear while caterham is still using a dedion rear axle. There are more differences than that, but the idea is similar. But you wouldn´t call a s2k similar to a miata because both a from japan and are fun light 2 seater, wouldn´t you?

I had never though of a "7" as a possible car for the touge, but it's kind of the perfect car for it. It's the driving experience distilled into it's its purest simplest form. Though I thinks a heated under suit like motorcycles have might help during cold temps. Last thing you'd want is a big puffy coat throwing off your driving.

Great to see the Westfield, hoped to after seeing it briefly in the last video. Was lucky enough to ride passenger in a Caterham track day car at Castle Combe in the UK a few years ago, no passenger seat, I just sat in the metal tub on a cushion, helmet sandwiched amongst the roll cage and some of the most incredible laps! On slicks the braking was crazy compared to my Dc2 I’d been driving round in the morning on road tyres, the grip round corners / change of direction unbelievable. My neck ached from the Caterham’s cornering for about a week afterwards. Incredible cars, light always wins against heavy, you can’t hide weight in corners :)

Funny how I was driving the Caterham earlier in Gran Turismo 4 earlier (that car is one hell of a thing btw, it's super light, revs-high, corners well and is pretty damn quick thanks to it's lightness depite it's lack of power)

    This made me wince.
    1. As others have pointed out, that is not a Caterham. Saying “Caterham” in inverted commas is not the same as saying Westfield. Unless “Toyota” means Nissan?
    2. Why did the guy choose a Westfield over a Lotus? Maybe because Lotus stopped making Sevens in 1972? I’d like to know why he went for a Westfield rather than a Caterham. (Cost?)
    3. Nonetheless, great to see a Seven enthusiast who isn’t as old as the design himself - a bit of a rarity in Japan unfortunately. Hopefully he’ll be able to upgrade to the real McCoy one day. I wonder what kind of Seven his dad is/was in to?

    • @justingardiner
      @justingardiner 3 года назад

      4. Lotus/Caterham does not use a Rover K-Series engine. Currently Lotus use Toyota engines of course, and used to put Ks in The Elise & Exige S.1 but they never put a K-Series in a Seven because it did not exist in the ‘50s and ‘60s.
Lotus Sevens used Coventry Climax motors or Ford units - sometimes tuned by Cosworth.
Caterham have since used Ford motors similar to the one in this Westfield (which is decidedly not stiffer than a Caterham BTW), Vauxhalls, Suzuki and, yes, they did use Ks as well, until Rover folded in the early naughties.
The current line up in Japan is:
      Seven 160 - Suzuki K6A 660cc
      Seven 270 - Ford Sigma 1.6L
      Seven 480 - Ford Duratec 2.0L NA
      Seven 620 - Ford Duratec 2.0L SC
