1987 Caterham Super Seven 1700 POV - The Lightweight That Proves Less is More (Binaural Audio)

- The Caterham Super Seven is one of the purest driving experiences legal on public roads. Jump in with me and experience the 1987 Super Seven with the Ford Kent 1700 Supersprint Crossflow engine. With a steeper cam, larger valves, and reworked carbs, this thing absolutely screams to redline while the 1350lbs chassis rockets along. Less is more.

Ariel Nomad? Lol
While mx5's are and all they are no way near as raw as a 7
a 1930s grand prix car checks all the same boxes you described except grip lol
I own an almost identical one but with a couple of tweaks (quaife ATB diff and 3D mapped ignition to bring the old xflow into the, er, 90s 😊). Used to race it - drive to events, take the tools out and stick the numbers on, check the tyre pressures and off you go. It was still competitive fifteen years ago against anything in the class. Not bad for a car designed in the fifties with a pushrod engine from the sixties and brakes of a Triumph Spitfire 😁. I loved your reaction and review - you really got across the sheer simple joy of driving one. If you get one you won’t regret it - they don’t depreciate, cost peanuts to run and you can fix most things yourself 👍 Go on, treat yourself!
Honest question, How did this compare to the morgan 3 wheeler?
AAGGHHHH. Motoring perfection!
I want to live in Vermont in a shack and drive this every day 😂
@@TedwardDrives Is it a 5 or 4 speed? Shifting looks great and tight, just right for it's characteristics
@@That_fella_named_J It's a 5 speed
@@boosted1100 thank you ! I'm considering getting one

The pollar opposite of a modern SUV
Exactly
SUVs aren't cars, they're just appliances.
@@marinolepre5271 lol
@@marinolepre5271 Except for the Urus, Bentayga, RSQ8, Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Levante GTS, Macan Turbo, Cayenne Turbo, Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, Durango Hellcat, 2022 Bronco and Defender. There are alot of dull SUVs out there, but there are arguably nearly as many really engaging ones. Crossovers can go to hell though.
@@tyler9703 Almost agree with you. I'd exclude from your list Urus, RSQ8, Cayenne Turbo and (pseudo) Defender. I'd include Ineos Bombardier (real Defender), and Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, even if they are all terrain and pickups.
Love your videos. Like that they don't focus on 0-60 times, HP and torque numbers, or all of the other stats. Your videos focus on the things that matter, how the car drives and what the experience is like. Loved to hear the joy in your voice when you were driving it and the viewer can tell it's just a blast. Thanks!
Why isn't fun on stats as well lol
When I heard the thing rev up, I started to smile and I'm not even driving it.

It's perfection!
"You might not like it, but this is how the definitive car looks!" - Me, right now.
Dude... this is unfair on so many levels... the weather you have is just amazing, I love beautiful fall days like that, unfortunately it's been raining in here for like a month straight. That car is one of my dream cars, cause A - it's light and B - it gives you so much unfiltered joy and raw experience that I think not many cars can match, C - I've driven one like 10 years ago and it stuck with me like a bad stench. And there is no traffic! And those roads! What the hell? There's traffic everywhere, where I live, and all the time.
Another great video, bless you man, you just made my Monday morning! Keep 'em comin'!
PS: the sound of that carbed and cammed 1.7... just wow
Do you know how much I would PAY to have rain here in Arizona for a month straight? It actually happened back in 2017. We had this horrendous June heatwave where it went up to 117 degrees. In July, I swear it rained everyday! It was incredibly satisfying.
@@Dcc357 well... that sucks too. It's been raining for months now here for a change and I'm freezing my ass off. Still waiting for that spring to start though :D
This was so much fun to watch! Although it's a track-focused kit car, it looked like great fun on these beautiful New England backroads too. Your excitement made me smile throughout the video, thanks for the vicarious thrills!
Any time! Thanks for watching
Mine is track and autocross focused. You can also find them with conventional seat belts, softer suspension, and a couple more concessions to comfort. But personally, I am totally in love with this car as it is. I drove it from home to Lime Rock Park and home in a single day, 300+ miles in a day. I was surprised at how comfortable I was. The biggest issue was the exhaust noise. I should have brought some ear muffs!
it's a street car, not a track-focused kit car
There's a french company named Martin. They made replicas of numerous cars, one of them being the Super Seven which are more street focused than the original: the engine is less powerful but more torquey and smoother, the car is a bit heavier and wider for a more comfortable riding experience. The Martin Super Sevens were especially built to cruise around the winding countryside roads rather than zooming on a track at full speed. The driving feeling is quite similar to the Catheram, it just feels a bit more tamed.
The Dutch hand builders 'Donkervoort' also had a kitset 'Series111 Seven' which was millimeter perfect to the original Chapman blueprint plans, and the lowest volume ever Seven builder is an NZ constructor 'ESC' standing for Edgar Salwegter Cars, who worked for Donkervoort in Holland. He emigrated to NZ in 1986 bringing just ONE Donkervoort Series111 kit with him.
In 1988 he had completed the project and had constructed a WORLD ONE OFF Seven, using an Australian 3042cc Holden straight six engine with triple side-draughts and mated to a Celica 5 speed box and a Capri diff and rear axle set-up. The big six he blueprinted with a racing camshaft, a race head, and dynamic balancing, using a dry sump oil system to fit the big engine under the Seven's hood, with the addition of a smallish power bulge.
He named this car 'ESC1' and raced it for a while before selling it. It was an open top finished in white and black, with wide white 'Minilites' and big rubber.
The Koni suspension was reverted from 'Ackermann' for public roads. The thing looked and sounded amazing. It accelerated like a moon rocket on full thrust. It is sitting in my garage. I am too old and knackered to drive it anymore.
James may would approve
Mainly because it has a wind screen

This is the most fun I've had watching a video!! I'm serious.. I could feel the greatness of this. Definitely one of, if not the best POV driving video I've seen. I want this car now!!!
Woah! Thank you for this
I completely agree, Definitely my favourite by far
i know how you feel. i have a 1995 Caterham with 155 hp for 550kg and that's just addictive.
If Caterham don't upload your video to their website then they don't deserve to ever sell another car. You brilliantly communicated just what the experience of driving one of these all about. And yes, they are awesome on the track having been an owner myself. Bravissimo Sir.
My left ear really enjoyed this video! haha
Thankful that I answer the phone on my right ear...Lefty is still recovering haha
It's basically a 4 wheeled motorcycle. Absolutely brilliant.
Smiles, this is what a classic little British sports car sounds like.
Pure joy in every shift.
Less is More.
You know it's a good car and a proper video when Tedward: 1) Wears earmuffs to muffle the sound and; 2) Is nearly screaming when talking.
I've always wanted to drive a Caterham. One of these days!
one of the most unique channels out here in YT.. ❤️
Funny how simplicity in motoring is perfection!
I wish for nothing but a chance to drive one of these at some point in my life. This is not an enthusiast car, this is THE enthusiast car.
I’ve been having a really rough time and I have nobody to help me through it. I’m all alone. This video does help. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about this video that really makes me happy. I hope you read this Tedward. God bless you. Thank you.
Hey joe! I feel you. I’ve had some good weeks and some really bad weeks lately but I just keep making videos. I hope you can find some kind of creative outlet
@@TedwardDrives i’m sorry to hear you’ve been going through bad weeks. Nice of you to write back. I’m a pianist so I do have a little outlet for my creativity. Thank you for being ever so helpful. God bless!
I bought one of these last year. You’ve captured the essence of what driving these is all about. The hardest part of ownership is having it sat in the garage during the long winter months. Roll on Spring/Summer!
This car is cute and serious-looking at the same time. Hoo man that side pipe too. Gave my left ear a workout. 😂
😆 same!
One of the iconic cars
Thanks for taking me along for the ride
My first car was a1960 Triumph tr3. I was 16 years old, late August 1967 and the price was $775. You just reminded me how that felt when the top was down and the leaves were flying Excellent
commentary! Thanks
Great video, great car, lovely roads with beautiful autumn scenery. These were twelve minutes so well spent!
For a while I had a Westfield SEight with the 3.5 Rover V8: it was heavier and not as nimble as this one you're driving, but what it lacked it made up in torque and noise (it had side exhausts too). These are wonderful toys but they really need a proper road and decent traffic conditions to be enjoyed, not to mention a fair weather: it's great that you had all these conditions to film this video. I ended up trading mine for a Lotus Elise, which is definitely more civilized but also more usable.
8:01 so that's how the got that amazing camera angle haha I love you Tedward
The exhaust is very similar sounding to an old school JDM sport bike. Like a 70s Suzuki GS1000 or the Honda CB Fours
I can confirm this!
Agreed, it sounds very similar to my 72 cb.
I was astonished by this car when I saw the opening sequence for my alltime favourite TV show - The Prisoner, starring Patrick McGoohan, who also wrote, produced and directed the strangest television show ever made. KAR 120C forever !

Loved this car since I saw the opening of the Prisoner way back in the '70's
God, the exhaust rumble and pops. Perfection.
Fantastic enthusiasm. Best Caterham review I’ve seen. Welcome to the 7 for life club
I have a home built Locost and have to say it doesn’t get any better.
I lost count how often i watched this. Such a lovely car, beautiful roads. Those downshifts!
I drove one of those for a few days and it has been my dream car.
It was an honor and a privilege to share my own enthusiasm for the car with you and to have to do such a great job of showing how visceral an experience it is to drive my Caterham! It couldn't have been done better! All that is missing is having you show that you can put your flat palm on the road sitting in the seat without leaning over!
I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for the experience. Thank you for sharing your incredible toy. I hope you had a great autocross with it today! Maybe I even helped clear some carbon as preparation haha
@@TedwardDrives I did fine on the autocross in spite of the temperatures being in the 40s and 50s. My tires never warmed up, but there's no such thing as a bad autocross! I was actually surprised at how fast my final run was.
@@AnkerBS would you suggest looking into an older one (like your one) or a new pre-built kit one? difference is about 30,000 aud.
@@eymanyouwell Sorry about the awfully late reply. The newer ones are faster, quieter and in some cases, the SV, more comfortable. If you want to we scarily fast, get one of the newer ones with more horsepower, like the 450. If you love classic cars this, for me, hits the right spot. It is still the Lotus 7 S3 chassis and panels, but with more horsepower from the Ford Crossflow engine.
this is my favourite car video. Just pure fun!
I have an old MGB that I have built from just the shell, I have the same motor, with a bigger cam that is in the this car here, and I love all the pops and bangs I get from the engine when I'm not on the throttle, Its straight pipe, coming straight out from the side of the car, such a nice experience,
Oh the memories came flooding back - I used to have one - well the best kit copy I could afford with a fiat 2litre twin cam and twin 45 Weber’s. the exhaust back pops (flames), the gravel in the face on tight turns, the sensory overload... the connection, the mild initial claustrophobia wedged in feeling, you brought it all back. These POV vids are great , especially the sounds. This was as close to the real feeling of driving a 7 I’ve seen so hats off to you sir! I bet you feel the same watching back 👍
I had exactly the same experience on my first drive in a Caterham back in 2003 on a slalom day on track. I HAD to have one for myself. Getting back in my MK2 Golf GTI 16v was like driving a bus! I've owned my 1994 1.7 Supersprint Caterham (very similar to the one in this video but without heavy extras like a heater ;) ) since early 2004 😍
The engine sounds very good. It is just right. Not too loud and not brutal sounding. It has a tuned sound that I really like.
That car reminds me of riding my motorcycle. You are out there in the wind, feeling everything.
As a cyclist who also loves cars, thank you for being cool to the cyclist on the road. I have dreams of building my own 7 in my garage.
Such a sensorial vehicle. Amazing!
Your videos, your style.... It's resting... I can't deny to like your videos 👍👍👍👍👍
Waw yeah it's also fun to watch, but also the scenery is beautiful, look at those colored trees. Very nice place to be. (From france, sorry for my english)
I just watched this with headphones and my left ear has never been so happy. I need a Caterham in my life. My ND Miata is a blast for all the same reasons but this is just on another level. I can't imagine driving something that weighs 1000 POUNDS LESS than my Miata.
That leave coming into the cabin just gave a huge smile!.
I've been thinking about buying a caterham for a year or so.... watching your video has pushed me very close to the edge!! Awesome video thanks
You won't regret it. I loved mine and drove it all year round, even in snow and ice (with winter tyres on). It had sticky Yokohama A022 tyres for most of the year which gave plenty of confidence. You also have to learn to be smooth on the inputs... it's so direct and responsive, being hamfisted and treating the throttle as an on/off switch will get you in to trouble. Especially in the wet. Oh, and the full hood and weather kit is a pain to get on and off!
I'm still only 16 and I never knew I wanted a caterham this bad 😄
Liked as soon as the video loaded. Your uploads are always the best depiction of what it's like to actually drive these vehicles.
Thank you! Also good user name. Reminds me of the caterham

I never really cared about Caterham, I only knew they made good cars. But after your video, this might be my new favorite car, what a driving experience.
After driving it my gt3 goals got bumped down the list lol
@@TedwardDrives Maybe a GT3 + S2000 combo :D, not the same but close. I would still miss the Super Seven a bit though.
Ugh I so want one. I need a garage first but this is one of my top 5 garage cars. With my AW11 MR2, a Datsun 2000, and a BB6 Prelude, my first real performance car, and a motorcycle. I just love to drive. As much as I love building cars and fixing and looking at them, driving is what I love most. A good driving car is priceless fun. My MR2 has that in droves.
That's why I scooped up an AW11 S/C last year. They'll never make cars like this again, the same car now would weigh another 500/1k lb. more with all the 'safety' crap they're forced to add. That's why we can't get Caterhams in the US any more, and it makes me furious. Freedom, BULLSHIT.
Just started one as a winter project... seeing this makes me happy!
I have an identical spec 2000 Caterham, but mine weighs in at 1180lbs (with clamshells, no less). You might want to throw this one back on the scales. I doubt it's 1350lbs.
Also, this is one of the best Caterham videos on YT. The sound is amazing and your downshifts are criiiiisp. I feel the same every time I drive mine on the backroads.

Thank you Chris!
This channel is the at the very top. Gold medal Ted.
These are so cool! An absolute dream car of mine. One of the modern Seven 360’s would be perfect.
Watching this brought back some wonderful memories. I owned a Lotus 7 back in the early 70s, involved in Club motorsport I'd had a series of what were uncompetitive cars, uncompetitive mostly because I lacked the funds to modify them sufficiently. The Lotus was perfect. Economical to race, it was very competitive as we were all competing with much the same equipment. To put the wheel hard over at 90mph would result in a perfectly controlled slide, touching an apex to the inch, or if being pushed beyond common sense would be retrievable even with my limited talent. It's a car that had me laughing out loud when in another car I'd have been gritting my teeth.
Thank you for that.. incidentally.. mine was that exact same colour scheme, polished alloy and red.
Tears of joy
It's like a 4-wheel motorcycle! I've ALWAYS loved those cars...
My old neighbor had one of these in England. They’re one of the coolest cars!!
Make me wanna go out n buy one!! Doesn’t get any better- this and/or a Lotus Elise, like the one I just watched Ted review. I thought the sound of that four banger was brilliant. But this one is on a hyper level! So guttural n raspy with real pops n bangs that together create such emotion, without being too in ur face. Just perfect!
this video got me crying at 11am on a sunday morning. these vehicles are so beautiful :D
The ford kent with those webers is a joy to hear. great memories.
Great to see and hear someone who actually gets what Caterham's are about. I often go out to get some gas and the driving is so addictive that I end up coming home with less than I started with, I just can't stop driving it. You just don't need 500 horse power to have a great time in a car. I brought my 7 over to the states in 2005 from the UK. with about another 25 cars along with some U.S. friends in their 7's and some Ultralites and drove from Houston to San Francisco, around 4,000 miles in three weeks, it was the trip of a lifetime and good to meet so many great people!! My other car is a Porsche Cayman which is superb, but nothing compares to a Seven for fun on four wheels. Also if you want to see a fast Seven check out the Caterham 7 620R at FOS 2017 on U-tube, it beat every Ferrari and Lamborghini, Aston Martin etc. on the hill climb there.
i watched this video 3 times already but i like it, like the drive the car and the sound this is pure driving and these are the roads for this kind of car
I once had the good fortune to go around Goodwood racing Circuit in UK with a professional racing driver in a 7, he scared me to death with just how fast it could corner, forget your big names these are the real deal.
Love the car but I’m also very impressed with the driving. Defensive and respectful. Not too often do you see someone watching each side road for other motorists as they pass.
Thank you!
