A supercar takes 5 seconds 0-60? Wow what a lifetime ago
Ikr
Less than two decades ago getting 0-60 under 4 seconds was staggering perfomance, now hot hatches achieve it
I think the video was made in the mid 2000's, considering the video recording quality
@@artistadrtm 2002
@@artistadrtm 2002, it says in the description
You would get 0 to 60 in 3 seconds in a gold R now with some big turbos and a remap... crazy how far we have come in motor engineering 🙌
Tiff is a bloody legend - always loved his reviews.
2:11 Civic drivers getting up to speed on the freeway
Everyone wants this show back.
Rithik Srinivas it is back. Since last year if you can find it en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Gear
@Henry Discipline NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
No no they really don't
@Henry Discipline waaaat? zero technical knowledge? he knows much more than clarkson, almost as knowledgeable as may.
Then why isn’t?
And today we can get a family saloon car going 0-60 mph in 5 sec
Tun Piccolo AMG E63S does it 3.2 secs lol
Tun Piccolo the m5 competition does it in 3.1
Tesla Model S P100d does it in 2.6 seconds lol
My vw golf can do it in 10.9 seconds... ahh oh, not the chat to enter lol 🤣😭
Rally cars do it in under 2.5
I didn't think that he was going to break the engine when he said "time to break another"
Tiff broke the record and the car. Great job :)
LOLZ
I think that comment is from 2002 too.
Damn that is so cool. I've never heard of separate engines powering front and rear wheels before. Shouts out to 2000s ingenuity, or engineuity if you'll allow me.
You might find that twin engines for front and rear drive are a little older than the 2000's!
But probably not just a coincidence a rod left the engine.
Lancia Trevi bimotore
The Italians did this in the 1930's with the Alfa Romeo 16C Bimotore. Google it.
My mate has A rover 100 with two engines. 4 wheel drive. So not uncommon. Front engine from an mgzr vvc. Back is mgf vvc subframe fitted with engine in the boot area.
I used to deliver to tiger racing years ago.
Great machines they had!
They were grrrrreat
@Farina Marcini don't get all frosty on us now!
Were? They are still around: www.tigerracing.com/
Anyone else notice the different number of spokes on the wheels in different shots ?
The one just before launch, the rear has 7, but the other side has 5 ?
Great observation. It looks like they were running a 5 spoke on the drivers side an a 7 spoke on the passenger, why? it's anyone's guess!
Don't care how old he is, I watch fifth gear for tiff. What a guy, I learn how to do a hand brake turn from him.
And yet you just sent Tiff a letter to say that he's no longer on the show. Poor form.
My mum worked in the garage next to the “factory” always great to see the cars out in the sun
How times have changed. Back then, if you wanted to do 0-60mph in less than 3 seconds, you needed a bespoke twin-engined 4WD Caterham-esque car, the right weather, the right surface and everything needed to go perfect.
Today, you get into a car like the Porsche Turbo S, press the Launch control button and set off. And it'll do that anywhere, every time.
My 20 yr old kawasaki zx9r does it in 3 secs, and holds the world record of being the first off the shelf road going vehicle to crack the standing quarter mile in under 10 secs...equating to 0 to 140mph in 10 secs. I paid 2000 pounds for it 3 yrs ago, and has never missed a beat in 30,000 miles. Beaten comprehensively now by modern bikes.
Great item thanks
My, how far we've come!
Watching this in 2019 makes me feel old.
Strange times we live in when a giant Hyundai V8 sedan can do that in 5...
lol
Always cool to see a dude who thinks his head is indestructible and so good looking he doesn't/shouldn't use a helmet.
Do you always cry when people don’t do what you do?
@@MrSilus2000 Who's crying, if this tool, or you for that matter, remove your head in a crash I'm gonna be the guy laughing at you. I'm alive because of helmets, so because you think I'm a whinny snowflake you should disregard my experience and forgo helmets for the rest of your days. Be tough, be macho, be a stud and smash the throttle to the floor and don't let up, go for it, dude.
Look at you insulting people for not abiding by your wishes. You’re a frustrated little boy, aren’t you. You think you’re offering advice but you’re really just whining like a little bitch.
@@MrSilus2000 he's just bitter and ugly leave him alone
what a car!
Amazingly old video, Tiff before he was a grandfather!
Reminds me of Brum's sporty cousin.
Amazing that a tuned Golf R can do 0-60 in sub 4sec.
Yo this is the car the Live For Speed one is based off. Cool, I love that car in LFS. It's so nice to drive and hardish, I love it.
This is the kind of reliability I imagine when I think about british cars. Fun, hardcore, truly for petrolheads, but miserably unreliable built by Nigel in some shed.
Yep. Thats why McLarens depreciate so rapidly. It takes decades to build a reputation for reliability. Hopefully they're on their way.
@@ziggyfreud5357 It's the Germans who lag these days and are relying on past image to get sales. In the latest what car reliability survey all the German makes did so badly they were behind Alpha. Yes, every single one of them behind Alfa. German cars have quality interiors that create the impression of being well built. But in reality, this is fake, they are of poor quality mechanically. The Japanese makes did far, far better. Tesla came absolute last.
@@ziggyfreud5357 re. McLaren - the first model had some problems. But the new ones are much better. The 720s used by Apex has done a lot of miles on the track and never needed anything other than routine servicing. The Drag Times 720s is the same - and is regularly launched in drag races. A few owners who take corners very aggressively have experienced cracked windscreens in the 600LT, but McLaren is working on that.
@@andrewnorris5415 Thanks Andrew. Interesting.
@@andrewnorris5415 Once again. Interesting
and to think my 335d does it in 4.7 shows how far everything has come!
well your 335 ain't stock then is it
03056932R yip it is stock, try looking it up 2018 335 xdrive. Chipping and some bolt ons takes it to 4.1 great Q car
looks like a good Contender for Pikes Peak
2:10 This has a whole new meaning now ;)
That’s a weird laptop tiff has in the cafe
🔵 Just after (4:04) you could hear him hit the rev limiter twice, and @(5:03) you could see the front wheels spinning MUCH faster than the rear, that discrepancy is probably what fatigued the rod, it appears to me that the slower turning rear wheels were holding everything back! shouldn't the front and rear Wheels be synchronized?
I think the car could have done better with someone who was more intimately familiar with the car over a greater period of time, as I'm not sure how long this fellow spent with it before going for the record, he didn't seem to have much finesse with it, and was more ham-handedly brutal with it more than anything else, I'm not quite sure if that was the proper way to handle it.
Tiff is a pro driver
This was all over the kit car forums at the time, Tiger wanted to attach the two gear selectors together, Tiff wanted them to be separate. Then at the redline he changed one and not the other... Apparently the Tiger people were very cross.
i think they tried twin engines in a mini moke back in the 60's, not quite the same performance!
It might not of broke if he wasn't driving the piss out of it doing donuts.
@Mr Anonymous Probably didnt have a dry sump. The g forces likely starved the engine of oil. Everyone always forgets about the damn oil. SMH
@Mr Anonymous or its definitely not stock. Those motors were definitely suped up
Bad gear change killed the engine I'd imagine
@Mr Anonymous
That wasn't a 14 fella , it was 2 12's and the ego driving fucked it right up.
They are strong motors but not if the guy in charge is clueless
Better than the new top gear I suppose
Man, I want to drive that thing.
This clip is older than Tiff.
Over revving and not giving a s*it as it's someone else's car! Well done tiff.
Oh I'd kill to drive one of those.
Not only have cars got faster. The 0-60 data takes ages to load “buffering” lol
What
Achille Austin 5 other people liked and understood, why can’t you
With a state-of-the-art dial-up connection
Have we come way ahead from these times
Crazy to think that a 2014 s8 weighing nearly 2 tonnes with a revo stage 1 at 675bhp can achieve the same time. How technology has moved on.
Why was this uploaded on 9th of august 2019
What a sound. Each shift was an aural slap.
right to the point that he missed the shift on the second engine and popped it.
0-60 in 2.97....but only once. Thats gotta be a record in itself.
He just broke it on purpose to stop anyone else having a go.
Did nobody else spot that he turned the immobiliser key to remove position, thus immobilising the engine 🤔
Yes those master switches can be configured for make or break.
How do you synchronize the engines?
dave_yeg you don’t. They turn different wheels through different gearboxes, that’s why he can shift them independently
Always loved this car , and let's talk about getting bang for the buck! It's a rocket gocart that's not for the faint Of heart..great job.
tiff is a legend end of.....
For being a long term TV presenter ?
Remind everyone what he actually achieved in the motorsport world ?
He did it all with an onion tied to his belt which was the fashion in those days.
I saw the time stamp of the vid upload and thought WTF? Nissan GTR?....Ah 2002!!
Now we have dragsters doing quarter miles in under 4 seconds hahah
D4nny we did back when this was filmed
Hmm. It would be "interesting" if one engine drove the left and the other the right😰
984francis
It certainly would.
But not for long.
More appropriate if one drove front and other back as engines can't really control power precisely
I watched ALOT of fifth gear and top gear back then. This was right around the start of college for me (2002 that is).
Might I also mention tiff is not wearing a helmet 😂. The wind at what I'm assuming is upwards of 120+ if not a whole lot more, must have been fun lol. I don't see too many presenters these days choosing to drive a windshield-less car sans face screen of some sort but that's why we love tiff!
Tiff blew it up
thats what happens when you forget you need to change gear with 2 levers, not one, lol. Missed the shift on one of the motors and the other pushed the car along making the 2nd engine rev way past its limit, then... pop
When was this filmed???? my guess is a while ago, anyway, don't forget to de-interlace before uploading. sheesh Fifth Gear.
2002, read the description
2020 corvette with Z51 package,
2.9 sec, stock.
Why did the engine break? Anyone have a plausible explanation?
Vikki broad bean harvester is the best prestenter on this show !
I wonder if Colin were redesigning the Seven, he would attempt to go electric for the reliability, simplicity, and utter performance. VW's ID R race car has been erasing a lot of long standing records.
Super cars take 5 seconds huh? Considering The Matrix theme playing in the background this has got to be from around the year 2000 or so. These days a super or hyper car better be well into the 3s to be called such. Hot Hatches are in the 5s these days lol
Wait.. I'm I in the wrong year again.
Сейчас 2019 год. 2.97 всё так же космические цифры))
Never heard of them, and for good reason.
Why good reason? You'll give yourself a heart attack if you think like that! It was the Kawasaki engine that failed not the car which is amazing. Come on. Maybe Brits should market their cars more as Germans do? Half the car RUclipsrs are paid off by German manufacturers who loan them free cars etc. Then they happen to say how amazing they are, of course.
@@andrewnorris5415 Thanks for your insight. Kawasaki engineered the engine, for use on a motorcycle, and then these Brits, thought...oh let's stick them in a car...without proper R&D ofcourse , a typical Brit shed job, and there, bang it went! Job well done mate! A for enthusiasm, F for execution. Hence, I never heard of them. Does this explain the 'good reason'?
Isnt this an older episode??
I think he blows a drive shaft.
Tiff must’ve been one of the many Stigs from Top Gear
Many years ago Tiff was doing a sprint on Brighton seafront driving a TVR V8, I was driving a lotus 7 1600cc I reset the 1600cc mod sports class and was a fair bit quicker than him
Production car ?
Good old British Engineering!
Pity Tiff blows it up.
Since when have 2 Kawasaki engines been "good old British engineering"?
Graham It’s better engineering than I can do and I guess Tiff knows what he’s talking about.
@@pazuzutru-truluv7094 - you've totally misunderstood my comment. The engineering is great, but Kawasaki isn't British!
Graham Hi Graham, I was being a bit naughty as I realised that. Then again look at Rizla Suzuki F1 bikes. Yes Japanese engines, but world renowned hand built British bikes.
Sorry for any offence.
@@pazuzutru-truluv7094 - no offence taken. Sorry if my comment sounded a bit coarse. It wasn't meant to be.
What a demon!
Something is wrong the rs200 was out in the mid 80s and I think the last road one was 1988
Even the RS200 only managed 0-60 in 3.6sec and on to 249 mph. Advanced traction control has improved the times today. The Tiger managed it by having a crazy power to weight ratio and a skilled driver to get it all down smoothly (Tiff).
production car record, and here we have a 2 engine caterham with all wheel drive, but u can only do one attemp because the engine will break down after one attempt
what times :D
Stock corvette, less than 3 seconds. Cars have come a long way since this episode was made.
Unusual for that kawasaki engine to throw a rod like that, that's builder error for sure
So what acctually happend is that during the 0-60mph run one engine gearbox did not shifted and that is why the engine blowed. If that gearbox could be sincronized it would be a real monster.
I don’t know what happened, but it seems to me that having a divorced gearchange is asking for trouble - changing up one engine while missing the other leading to one engine pushing the second into an overrev and causing things like rods to part company with pistons…
oh,how i yearn for a car that explodes on the second acceleration test
wish it was mine...
Why in the world would I like to have the engines in different gears?
more rwd bias perhaps. i would keep the front wheels one gear higher than the rear to try it out..
Chris is responsible for the design...the go cart design?
Nowadays guess what nowadays, even faster times from 0 - 60.
When was this video made? The current Porsche Turbo S does 0-60 in 2.5 seconds...and that is according to MT.

My dad is bigger than yours.....
R400TVR True! But my point is that a family car today can beat what was a world record 0-60 time not long ago. A point which nobody seems to get 🤔
In 2002 this was obviously reasonable.
How quick was a telsa in 2002?
They did 0-60 in 189,216,000s
Looks like brum on steriods
Nowadays my skyline wipes it off the face off the planet hahaha

Helmet safety be damned!
How old is this!
It's in the description son.. ;-)
Rimac Navera enters the chat
get him back in this thing...
I am looking forward to Tesla Roadster breaking the 2 second barrier, although it might not be physically possible.
It's totally possible to break the 1 second barrier, just look a dragsters or some hill climb cars.
