  • With layered numbering I mean something like this. “1.3.2 + Chapter name”. Here I will be using it for chapter numbering but it could of course be used for lists as well. You might use this for really long documents where it will allow the reader to keep track of exactly where they are. And of course, it’s also way easier to automate rather than writing down all numbers manually.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with a numbering issue please? I have set up my paragraph styles as you showed but each new section starts at number 1 rather than go 1, 2, 3 and so on. Happy to share the document if that helps. Thank you.

Hi, it might be because it's not all in one story, so either in one text box or linked boxes. I couldn't find a way of doing this without linking it all as one story, so if anyone knows a way of doing it I'd love to know too. Hope that helps

Thank you, almost exactly what I was looking for! Would you have any idea how to apply this to a list of figures? I have chapters (1 - 10) and several subchapters (A - E). I would like to create an automatic list of figures for images that appear throughout. For example Figure 1.A.1 that is the first figure within Chapter 1 Subchapter A. Then Figure 1.B.1 - the first figure within Chapter 1 Subchapter B.

Glad you liked the video, Hmm, sounds like it might end up being quite conplicated, I've never tried doing that. But variables and automatic table of contents might be features that could also help you. I have videos for both. Cheers
