Thank you so much! It is so weird to have to do this manually, especially after using Word for such a long time. Perhaps Adobe need to write a piece of code that allow users to use some default numbering and bullets without having to do all this work. I spent a good 10 mins trying to do this on my own, before resorting to RUclips for the solution.
Yes, it's definitely NOT intuitive!!
Thank you. This exactly what I need to know. ❤️

Thank you! What if I want consecutive numbering for graphics over the course of several pages?
I found something over at Creative Pro that shows a few different ways to do this. Just search for creative pro making numbered tickets.
Thanks for this, do you know how to add 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc under the main level? Would love to know, thanks
Here's an article that might help: community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/create-a-list-that-is-1-1-1-2-1-3-then-2-1-2-2-2-3/m-p/10629909
Great Tutorial. I would also love one on how to number headings for chapters with lower level sections such as Chapter 1, Section 1.1, Sub-section 1.1.1. etc
Ok, I'll add it to the list!! :)
You just need to navigate to "Bullets and Numbering" at the Paragraph Style of your section, and change the "Number:" code in the "Numbering Style" section to the following:
^1.^2.^t
or in the case of a sub-section to:
^1.^2.^3.^t
and so on, if you need to subdivide it further.
Thank you kindly I’ve been looking for this! 🎉
thanks so much for this video. can u do one that creates a table of content based on paragraph styles please?
You're welcome! Unfortunately I don't know much about TOC.
my letters won't restart ... they just continue ...what am i doing wrong?
Hmmm, I'm not sure if the steps in the video aren't working. I'd try starting from scratch again to make sure each step is followed.
Hi Ann, how to do a numbering with parentheses? Many thanks
I haven't tried it myself, but I found an article about this: www.globalizationpartners.com/2017/10/26/indesign-how-to-customize-the-appearance-of-numbered-lists/
I have 12 Level 1 headings. Should I start a paragraph style for each or just lave a leave 1 heading and it will continue on from the previous?
You only really need a paragraph style for each level (if I'm understanding you correctly).

Thanks that is what I did just thought there might be a simpler way. What I actually did to work around what maybe a glitch I created I don't know but I set up two for each level 1 - 12 labelled as Level ? start and Level ? continue. The level ? start was set up with the next style was Level ? continue. This was to get it so I started with say 10.1 then everything else would be 10.2 on.
My system worked just thought there maybe a simpler way. Thanks
I think if that works, then go with it! I would have to get in there and mess with it to see if there's a better way.
Great tutorial even though adobe needs to make this way easier to do. Absolutely crazy it's this hard to do
Yes I agree! But it's not too bad once you get used to it.
Hi, thanks how can I define a Style just like: 1.2, 1.2, 1.3 and going
I'm not 100% sure, but I think InDesign only allows what can be found in its presets. I'm sure a script can be written to accommodate this, though.
Hi Ernesto - I had the same challenge. This video helped me - ruclips.net/video/nqNMQPwHsGs/видео.html
Thank u 😍😍
Can u help me a little question about InDesign, please~ Can we place an AI file in InDesign (and we can continue to edit it)?? 😗😗
Yes you can! After you save it in Illustrator, InDesign will notice it's been updated. Then go to Links palette to the flyout and choose Update All.
@@GDHT I tried doing it and it went well 💕💕 thank u ahhh 💕💕 hihi
Oh that is great!! I'm glad it worked for you!!
@@GDHT 💕
how do I make the second level write 1.1, 1.2 ... ?
This might help - community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/create-a-list-that-is-1-1-1-2-1-3-then-2-1-2-2-2-3/m-p/10629909
I want to use the numbered list paragraph style also in other parts of the document and I want the numbers to start with number 1 again, but the continue with previous number option is making the number continue where it ended in the last place. How to fix that problem?
I think you could duplicate your numbered list style, and apply that to the new paragraph.
@@GDHT I'm having the same problem. Duplicating the numbered list style still continues numbering from the previous list in the document. And even if it worked, creating a new style for every list (and level of each list) would get incredibly confusing if you've got a document with dozens of lists, some of which are multi-level and some of which aren't. You could name them "Numbered List A Level 1" "Numbered List A Level 2" "Numbered List B Level 1" and so on, but that seems to defeat the point of having styles in the first place--in terms of globally adjusting styles in a long document all at once. And unfortunately, that's precisely the kind of doc I'm dealing with. Any alternate ideas?
@@GDHT You have to duplicate the list styles for each list in the document? This can get out of control if you are doing this for a magazine, catalog, short story, or even a book.
@@GDHT Duplicating the style has no affect. The numbers still continue to the next number in the new list with the copied list style.
👍👍😊
😊
Excellent! Your explanation is highly pedagogical, congratulations. 👍🙂
I have three questions, could you please give me some guidance:
1.) if, instead of using one of the preset formats, I want to use a different one or modify one of the existing ones, how should I do it?
For example: I would like to use the number format in the first level: 1. For the second level: 1.1. For the third level 1.1.1: etc. But I can't find how to do that from the presets, what I do see, are a series of "weird" characters "^#.^t", And maybe that's the key....
2.) If I want to add a parenthesis after the number, what kind of character do I need to place and where?
3.) Will there be any Adobe article explaining these "weird" symbols for those of us who don't know about them?
Thank you very much!
I've never tried to do this myself, but this Adobe article might help (under the section Change numbered list options) helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/bullets-numbering.html
I'm going to try to do a video about this in the next few weeks. And yes, the key is those weird characters!!
Thank you very much, I am sure it will be highly didactic and therefore, of great benefit to us, your subscribers.
I am aware that generating valuable instructional material takes time, so when it arrives, it will be adequate. Thanks again. 😊 @@GDHT
I hope so! :)
