The Ohio Ordnance HCAR (Heavy Counter Assault Rifle - a rather fanciful name) is what happens when you take the US military development track of the Browning Automatic Rifle, and bring up to the present day. Why would someone choose this particular product to modernize? Well, because eOhio Ordnance was already making standard semiautomatic reproduction of the M1918A2 (World War Two era) BAR, and this type of modernization was a fairly obvious extension of that project.
The HCAR retains the .30-06 chambering of the BAR, but gives it much-improved controls. The magazine release is now a handy AK-like lever, the safety sits nicely under the thumb of a right-handed user, and a proper pistol grip replaces the traditional wrist of the M1918A2 (a change that Colt and FN made in the 1930s, but which never got into the US Ordnance system). The rifle fires from a closed bolt, and Ohio Ordnance added a bolt release control as well - something not needed on the open-bolt originals. Picantinny rails on the receiver and handguard allow for mounting of optics, bipods, and other accessories.
A few holdovers from the US military ancestry inclose the A2-style magazine guides, and the rather tricky disassembly procedure (which was also much improved by FN in the 1930s, but not adopted by the US). The barrel is offered in either 16" or 20"; both dimpled for weight reduction. The receiver, bolt carrier, and many other parts have been substantially lightened, bringing the HCAR in at 11.75-12.5 pounds depending on barrel length - a huge reduction from the 19 pounds of a standard M1918A2.
The question is, what is the purpose of the HCAR? It is a very expensive rifle, and one is tempted to try to see it in a modern tactical light because of its styling. However, there really isn't much a .30-06 can do that can't be accomplished by any number of lighter and cheaper rifles with more widespread aftermarket support. To me, the purpose of the HCAR is simply to have fun with. It is a very cool rifle, and does not need to be justified as aTier One Operator's choice. It is reliable, pleasant to shoot, accurate, and makes form a fun head-turning day at the range. Sometimes that's all a gun needs to be...

@@atomic_wait A lot of very old firearms, machine guns specifically, are seeing new life in modern war. in Ukraine, a lot of the antiques are used in defensive positions while modern rifles are used for assaults. Looking at how difficult a time Russia is having against Ukrainian positions that are equipped with WWI Maxims... I think weapons like these are most practical when resisting an attacking enemy. this HCAR looks super terrifying if you put it in a watch tower.
Is there any way to add these parts to an original BAR? Not that I would want to I just really want to see the HCAR in full auto like God intended
@@AcidGambit419 I've heard rumors of one of the prototypes being made full auto for endurance testing but to my knowledge no one has converted an HCAR to open bolt auto like a bar.

Ohio ordnance works used to be my wife’s account when she sold copy machines. These guys are top notch humans. They used to send us a gallon of Ohio maple syrup every year for Christmas.
Can’t say enough good things about these folks, seriously they deserve nothing but praise.
When I longer does that job but every winter I long for that syrup as I’m too cheap to buy my own 😂

Yeah I thought that the HCAR was kinda dumb when I heard about it at first. A new production 30 caliber rifle in something other than 308 or 300blk, that uses an old platform with older features, and is probably heavier than it probably needs to be. My initial reaction: this is stupid, I'll take 2.

I love it. I must have it. I have always been a fan of military camo, and used to but it from goodwill and milsurp places when it was cheap.

My Father carried one in the Korean war with the 101st he was part of the lost company! He always used to say it was the great equalizer when it came to laying down stopping power from a distance! Took him to the Browning arms museum in Utah he and the curator started talking old war stories and we got a "Special" tour! He's been gone since 2014 not a day goes by that I don't think about him! Thanks for the memories Ian!

I used to do yard work for an old man who fought at the battle of the bulge carrying a bar. He told stories about taking deer with it so his squad could eat something other than rations for a night or two. I showed him the hcar when it first came out and he absolutely hated it lol. Said it was a disgrace

Probably, just the looks. He would have liked most of the changes if on a different gun. Us older guys are more attracted to good wood furniture and fewer accessories. Just on pure looks, it strikes me as ugly. For use, would take it over original. 😊

I agree. It is one of the ugliest guns I have ever seen.
The dimpling on the barrel also makes it fly farther, when you run out of ammo and have to throw your rifle like a javelin.
Since that's pretty much immediately, I find the lack of bayonet lug to be a gross oversight in terms of achieving secondary javelin function.
I thought it was so you can grip the barrel better as you use the giant thing as a club.

If I had the $4-5k laying around, I'd order one of these HCARs in a heartbeat. It would be a ton of fun to take out once in a while and touch some targets at distance. I also like how Ian was getting excited over the black tip 30-06 that he was pushing through the HCAR, since that's how I get sometimes when I go to the range.

Both in semi-auto .308 I think the HCAR would just come out on top. Just my opinion. Both gorgeous rifles though.

This thing is awesome, it scratches the same itch for "what if we modernized old weapons" as the ebr for the m14. Leads to SUPER cool weapons even if they may not match the effectiveness of modern weapons with the same thought and effort put into it. Safe to say its another rifle i just put in the daydream safe.
0:15. Something I just realized, curved mags have another little hidden advantage. The curve is an easy way to determine which way a mag needs to face before going into the gun. Of course there is the much more practical advantage of better feeding and higher capacity, but it's just one more reason why curves are better

Oddly, he never shoots the rifle with the curved magazine in it.
That's an interesting point - I wonder if real-life BAR and Sten etc operators were taught to stow the magazines in the same orientation every time to stop them fumbling if it was dark. But given all the FALs and G3s that were in service post-war (and the 20-round M-16 magazines) it can't have been that much of an issue.
@@AshleyPomeroy You generally stow mags in a preferred orientation so you can pull them and insert instantly. It's kind of normal with weapons you are trained for.
Just feel the bottom of the mag, most straight mags nowadays are slanted at the bottom

Love the HCAR, it is on my short list, but I ended up buying the Noreen BN-36 (AR in 30-06) first. Fortunately, I have lots of 30'06 ammo I bought at 25 cents a round a long time ago.
Paint it up in Black & White and you have the next STARWARS heavy blaster ....
I've had an HCAR for a couple of years now. It's worth the money, highly reccomend.
I'm really surprised how much effect that slight angling had on penetration in the AP test at the end.
That’s why a lot of the German armored cars and half-tracks featured heavily sloped front and sides, almost polygonal.
8mm steel (1.525 mm thinner than the target) can’t resist 8mm armor-piercing ball head-on. But when sloped at those angles, it can.

The US military (of sorts) DID use the HCAR. It was very useful in Afghanistan to fill in as a ridge to ridge engagement weapon temporarily. Still had F/A at the time, but it did wonders in that role. No dimpled barrel and slab side instead of those lightening cuts. But it was real useful for what it was when it was needed.

This weapon is beautiful. There's just something special about that machining. The receiver indents, the barrel dimpling, the foregrip jimping, the modern pic rail and ventilation. It combines the beefy look of the original with the clean machine aesthetics for a really nice end product. Wow. No wonder Ian showed us his giddy side. 😂

HCAR's folding charging handle is cool and very similar to the Canadian FAL C1A1 and C2 both also had bolt lock open on empty and a bolt hold open device.

I would love to own one if it was full auto or I could convert it to full auto.
The dimpled barrel also makes it look like the air cooling holes in old school machineguns.
My grandfather is a professional old person, so he has a lot of experience doing a lot of random stuff. He says that during his time in the Army, his 2 favorite rifles he used were the M16 and the BAR. I bet he'd find these super neato if they were select fire like the real guy.

I love the Irish deface forces camo. I turned in all mine when I left as there are legal restrictions on wearing it for a civilian. It is being retired for a more common camo so supply is cheaper. Looking fresh Ian.

Regarding the top rail:
It looks like the current top rail is dovetailed into the top of the receiver, extending it would add maybe 10-20 dollars to the price of the gun. The dovetail already extends all the way through the lockup hump so just lengthening it is totally feasible.
I think the actual reason they haven't implemented it is because that's the location for the markings.(which would be a silly reason, but so be it)

Saw you in the Irish DPM and having never heard anything about the HCAR before was wondering if Ireland had adopted a new rifle.
No, Ireland has not "...adopted a new rifle."
The only move in that area was to restore some of the FN FALs held in storage to service as Designated Marksman Rifles, to be issued to the spotter of a sniper team.
@gloin10 yes, and talking from friends in the army, those FN FAL DMR conversions were not successful because the Department of Defence purchased standard FAL parts for the bolt and receivers of the rifles, which are not condusive to consistent accurate marksmanship. They should've bought National Match parts (as advised by the Army) but that would've cost more money. And if there's one thing the Irish Department of Defence is infamous for, it's spending as little as money as possible.
Love their modern take on the BAR sort of a what would browning do, and it comes off very nicely!

My standard version OOW Bar shoots sub MOA. Recoil from the 30-06 is like a .22lr in that heavy gun especially since I have a big muzzle brake on it. The 30round mags really make them a lot of fun and I think something that can go head to head with the Bren.

Very cool black tip demo at the end! If anything it shows how impressive armor has become. Level IV plates are surprisingly affordable for how capable they are.
According to family legend, sometime around 1958 my grandfather (who was a member of one of the U.S. Army Reserve's competitive shooting teams at the time) needed to run a water line from a newly drilled well to his house. To do this, so the story goes, he dug a trench between the well and one of the house's concrete foundation walls, then used a sandbagged M1903 Springfield and a handful of Cartridges, Armor Piercing, Caliber .30, M2 to drill a hole in the wall. He _may_ have inadvertently assassinated the furnace with the shot that finally penetrated the wall.
As with all legends, I can offer no hard evidence that this one is true, although we did find a partly used box of 1950s-vintage M2 ammunition in his sock drawer when he moved to assisted living a few years ago... ;)
Just got an HCAR recently myself, they’re a neat gun! Interesting to learn about the impetus that brought it to market.
A quick comment, if using OOW HCAR mags, they will lock open on an empty mag. If you look at them, they have a rectangular cut made on the back of the mag that interfaces with the hold open mechanism. If using surplus BAR mags, that cut is obviously not there, so you don’t get bolt hold open on an empty mag. I’m curious to find out if making a similar cutout in surplus BAR mags will work properly with the bolt hold open mechanism. I’ll be trying it soon!
are they picky about ammo? a few videos out there on YT show some malfunctions which i assume were ammo related or possibly a surplus mag issue.
@@terrorform242 I honestly have not had enough time behind the gun shooting different types of ammo to know just yet. I got a few hundred rounds of PPU 150gr soft point ammo, and that seems to be doing fine in my limited use.

Could not agree more Ian. I bought mine almost 4 years ago now. Mines black with an eotech hybrid optic system. 5× on the magnifier. I went through the entire weapon and polished every single friction surface to a mirror shine. Aftermarket charging handle, magpul stock, custom one off 3d printed grip, bunch of good good stuff. Its taken the spot of my SCAR 20s of my favorite rifle. I was gonna go the Noreen route, i wanna say BR36?? Might be called something different. However im already a big fan of O.O. and wanted to spend my incredibly hard earned dollars with them. Their customer service is bar none....no pun intended....and i just love that. Any company that has a policy like they do, earns my business every time. Same with Sig. I also own a Sig 716i and m400. DMR is where i lived when i served, thats where ill continue to stay. Mossburg pistol grip on my back, bangin on the long gun. OORAH!!!!!

My friend Martin, retired professor at SOCC College, Ashland, Oregon and now passed on, carried the BAR during the Korean era. He was 6'4 and 240, and he said it " shook his eye teeth..." to fire it.

Just wanted to say Ian, that I've been watching your content since at least 2016. Once I found out about the HCAR back in... 2017? I was curious if you'd ever would cover it, and now that There's been this 'resurgence' of interest surrounding the HCAR, I'm glad to see you FINALLY cover this INSANELY expensive but insanely cool firearm. I hope that with more attention surrounding this particular firearm, it'll drive the cost of the weapon down, because last I checked on there website, there's like a waiting list for a couple years ahead in line, and they also run anywhere from 5K-8K MSRP. Its just ludicrously expensive but damn would I love to own one.
With how hard core the military is going with battle rifles, I feel like in an alternate universe someone could've gotten the military to pick this up lmao

@@rewrite1239 The Military knew the 6.8 SPC would not be able to do what they wanted, hence the .308 Action size rifle with a dual component cartridge case design that could handle 80,000 PSI easily and be capable of going up to 100,000 PSI before entering over-pressure range. Using a hardened tungsten core inside the 6.8 diameter shell so when it hits XSAPI it peels the copper jacket back and the tungsten core punches a neat hole through the .30-06 AP rated plates 100% of the time on the first shot.
A little birdie told me that an overwhelmingly successful alien invasion, followed by a human rebellion, would make for precisely the circumstances needed for this design to be procured :^)
They really should have entered one of these in .270 for the Army's 6.8 competition.

For me this is the gun that if I had to have one rifle this would be it.
I had an HCAR for a short time. About 2 years or so which is short for me and gun ownership. I paid about $3,600 for it. Had been eyeing a SCAR-H which at the time was about $2,800-ish but came across one of these instead and bought it. Honestly, a very well built gun, the example I had was quite reliable. Magazines were the tough part to source and quite expensive and of course .30-06 was never "cheap" but surplus M2 ball was readily available at the time so kept costs down a bit.
Definitely not worth the asking price in a semi auto only format. In full auto, I've been told it manages the recoil quite well and in that role it may be worth something. Kind of like the Kriss Vector being just a cool showpiece in semi auto only. Anyhow, I do have fond memories of the gun in general but somebody wanted it far more than I did and ended up parting ways. I pretty much got away from the more modern tactical rifles like that after the fact and ultimately was far more interested in their regular BAR replicas. But didn't want to spend the money for something.

I've got a solid bar for the future BAR.
I imagined a modernised version of the FN/FAL as used by the British Army as the L1A1 SLR from that very familiar cocking handle, later replaced by a round knob for faster cocking in British use, i really like the HCAR design and layout, would be good as with the SLR if it had a straight 30 round magazine as used on the L1A1 from the L4A4 Bren in 7.62.
looks like a pleasure to shoot. I got to fire a privately owned SLR years after they went out of service with the British Army i could happily carry a HCAR instead of L85. Nice video thanks for showing this.
