Story1: YTA. i was like, yea she probably wanted something useless with a name brand where the only kick she'd get from it is showing off... but knives are useful for the whole household. And a good set of knives is a pleasure to work with as well as a great gift idea. Personally i have crap gift recieving habits and an expensive taste. Realizing this i'd never ask people to get me what i really want and i pretend to like what i get... family learned to just give me money ( a logical amount) so i'd buy my own expensive choice items without breaking anyone's bank by using all of their gift money collectively or adding my own.
But you asked and you don't have money problems. Get her the knives and a bouque of flowers on top as apology.
Story2: NTA. But can you blame a young man with this little experience for using his own logic? that he's embarrassed to the point of breaking up may come from a deeper place than male ego or what not. It would do him- and you- a great deal of psychological health and relationship growth in the long run and for other relationships down the road if this one didn't last, if you reached out, apologized ( i know you aren't wrong) saying miscommunications happen among people especially in the beginning, and asking to start again if only as friends ♡
