Thank you for all the helpful info, Michele! Our travel time from the breeder will be 5hrs. Do you have any tips on how to help a carsick puppy feel better?
Max B my tip is bring a crate, blanket, puppy pads, and baby wipes. All of these stuff are going to be needed to follow theses steps. 1.Put your puppy in the crate, and cover the crate with a blanket. 2.Puppy pads in case of accidents, and baby wipes to clean up the mess. 3.Make sure your puppy is calm and safe. 4.Last but not least, make sure to secure the crate with a seatbelt. Hope this helps!🙂👍🏼
My puppy will be riding in a crate! This video only reinforced what I think about that. But the positive reinforcement exercises with the car are really great. I’d never thought about that before. Thanks!
The timing of this video is just amazing. I am bringing home my pup next week and I was wondering what the best way to transport her was. Was already preparing on using a crate due to a earlier video but I repeat the timing of this video is great. Time to watch it now :D
I plan to bring my puppy home from the breeder in December - in a crate! I will ride in the back seat with the puppy in the crate while my husband drives. The breeder is about 90 minutes away, so I'm hoping we don't have to stop on the way home.
We are picking up our toy poodle tomorrow and you have convinced us to put him in the crate when we bring him home. We look forward to watching your channel, but now as we raise our little fur ball in our family of 7. 🤞Thank you.
I am bringing home an 8 week Shih Tzu puppy in two days. I will be putting her in a small crate for the one hour drive home. She will be joining my 5 yo Shih Tzu, Lia. I have literally been preparing for this for over 6 months. I recently found your videos and they are wonderful. I will be re-watching many of them over the next couple of days.
I will be getting a chihuahua puppy (adult weight charted to about 4.5 pounds). It will be two full days of car travel to get to the breeder, and then another two full days to get home with the puppy. I will be training her as a service dog for myself. She will definitely be in a crate on that trip, but haven’t decided which one yet.
Your videos are so Helpful my Baby is doing so much better I put her in the Crate and we go to the Vet for all shots started with the Parvo And all required shots necessary 🐾🐾🐾
We couldn`t wait to bring our Rocky to his new home. He was so small and cute little puppy back then, peacefully sleeping on the back seat. And now we are thinking of buying a bigger car to make him more comfortable when we travel together 😋
Hi my family and I are about to get a dog and your videos have been VERY helpful! We will be traveling with a crate with something like a towls or a blanket covering over the crate. I just want to say thank you so much!☺️😁🥰❤️🐾🦴
Hi! My family and i just brought our puppy home at 9pm (it was a 3 hour driver to and back and we couldn't go earlier due to scheduling issues). We stopped after 2 hours to see if she needed to pee or poop but she didn't. Then, before we brought her home, we gave her another chance to pee in the spot we designated for her outside our apartment and she didn't. Then we put her in the crate when we brought her inside and she started crying so much (which was expected). We waited about 15 min and then brought her back out again for about 10-15min and she didn't do anything. We put her back in the crate for another 15 min and waited until she stopped crying to take her out and try again. Nothing. Now we've put her back in the crate and its quite late so we figured we would see if she just went to sleep and would try again when she starts making a fuss again. It's been an hour and a half since she stopped crying and I'm just wondering if we're doing the right thing. First time owners btw.
Just got my 8 week old goldendoodle yesterday! 2 hr drive each way. Followed advice and went with the crate for my drive home. Was such a good decision as my pup fell asleep in it almost the whole ride home. From there I didn’t need to convince her to like her crate. It’s day 2 today and she’s doing fantastic. Good luck and enjoy!
We will not be traveling as Pickles masterfully demonstrated lol - crates! (We’re one of those who did not think there would be enough fur to go around 😬😅)
Thank you so much for the helpful content! I’ve learned so much from all of the videos. One question though, do you think getting a dog is a good idea with little kids at home and is beneficial for kids, or just too much work? I’ve been seriously thinking about getting a dog, but I just need good advise before I make a bad decision. Hope you can understand. 🙂
Great question! This will depend on the age of your kids and the breed of puppy you get. I always say all puppies under a year, and more so under 6 months, are like having another baby in the house. They do require a lot of work, more than most people realize. Reach out to us at support@howtotrainadreamdog.com and let us know a little more about your family dynamics so we can help you determine if a puppy or maybe even an older dog might be the right fit for your family.
I agree a crate is primarily the right thing to use. I find it interesting that other dog trainers on the same subject bring up holding the pup ( not the driver ) as a form of bonding and calming. I can also see a pup which has never crated before could then see it as a negative. I have to drive about 5 hours to get my new pup in a couple months. Lots to consider.
Most pups are so exhausted on the way home that they sleep, which becomes the first association to the crate (sleep!). It's also much safer than having a pup on the lap. In the even of an accident the puppy could become seriously injured.
Sleepy Pod. I highly recommend using harnesses and crates that have been crash tested by the Center for Pet safety, Most crates won't even withstand a crash. Donate to them so they can crash test more products.
Thank you for this video! We are planning on picking up our 8 week old puppy in a month or so, and it will be a cross country roadtrip - about 5 days (eep!). We were thinking of a slightly larger crate so we can fit in a small/standard Fresh Patch in the crate as well. I know you said only enough space to turn/etc but bc of the length of the trip it might be nice for him/her to be able to have the option to relieve themselves on the patch. What do you think?
We're glad you found this video helpful! We don't recommend placing a patch inside of the crate, as it may teach your puppy to potty in the crate. With that being said, you will definitely still benefit from using the patch on your trip. When you make your stops, you'll want to avoid your puppy touching the ground at all costs. Using the patch will help you to keep your puppy safe!
Great information! I would highly suggest removing the background noise in your video during instruction. It is very annoying to listen to while wearing headphones.
My dog will be over 100 pounds. My vehicle would not be able to fit that big of a crate. Any suggestions for an alternative way to secure him in my vehicle?
Yes a back clip harness is a good idea so he's used to it when he's ready to start decompression walks. Try to get the kind with the Y on the chest so the straps don't restrict shoulder or leg movement.
What do you do if your puppy dog loooooves to get in the car but once things start moving, they fret? Our last puppydog would jump into any open car happily (we had to tell the pizza delivery guy to open his door when she bust out the door haha) but just couldnt settle down, no matter what
You got it! No bedding until after they are passed the teething stage. Check out this video for our tips on crate set up: ruclips.net/video/Y6u73XN_rYQ/видео.html
My 16 wk old (new to me) Mini Aussie barks incessantly in the crate in the back of the car. I have on relaxing zen music, she has a nylabone but nothing calms her. I did not do the desensitizing training before-hand (i've had her 3 days now) and wonder if I should 'retro' train? Feedback welcome. Thank you !
Yes, it sounds like you'll want to take a step back from car rides for now, and work on desensitization. The more time she spends in the crate in distress, the harder it will be to help her love it for the future.
Any suggestions for travel with your new pup on a plane. The Adaptil and a chew toy in a travel crate/soft-sided crate is my initial plan. Any other suggestions? I don't know if air-travel presents any uniques challenges when traveling with your new pup.
My sister and I are getting 2 Springer Spaniel puppies from the same litter. Will it be OK if we put them both in the crate together to travel home and should we still cover it if we do? I could put the crate in the back of my station wagon or on the back seat where my sister could be sitting. Which would be best?
What do you do to prepare dogs to fireworks on New years eve so they are not frightened by it. I know someone who had a puppy and the puppy died it was so scared of fireworks.
The puppy blues are a common feeling when first bringing home a new puppy. After all, you are now responsible for this creature who doesn’t speak your language! It can be frustrating for the humans AND the puppy! We have a great video that can give you a lot more information about how to work through these natural feelings and how to build up a great relationship with your dog: ruclips.net/video/9frdWEfDHAg/видео.html
@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you 🥲 I cannot stop crying! But I must say when I do have my cry he calms right down and lays at my feet 💔 no one speaks about post-pup depression!!! Thabk you so much for this!!!
I'm going to pick up my puppy, and then travel from 15 to 18 hours. What will we do? He'll be about eight weeks old. I plan to have a small travel crate for him to be riding in. Is there any way to prepare him?
We encourage you to follow the tips found in this video! Stop frequently, and potentially plan these stops ahead of time. It sounds like you're already on the right path with the crate you have for him. You may benefit from making this a 2-day trip (staying in a hotel overnight) so that it's less overwhelming to your pup. We wish you the best of luck!
My dog is 6 and we don’t own a crate because she has severe car anxiety so we typically just put a dog seatbelt on her for vet rides. We’re moving from ny to California next summer and we will be driving so we want to start crate training her now so she’ll be ready. What crate do you recommend for long term travel? She’s a medium sized pitbull about 55lb
Note- we got her when she was 2. She was a rescue from the shelter after being a bait dog so the first few years were spent trying to get rid of her anxiety and introduce her to a safe environment so we never felt like crate training was an option
For more specific questions regarding training, we recommend you post your questions in the Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
Ok so this isn’t really related to the video but if you get a puppy and your away at school and nobody’s home, can you use a puppy apartment crate which is basically a crate that has a bed with a divider that leads to a pee pee pad
I have a golden puppy. Is it safe for her to jump into the crate into the car backseat. We have been lifting her into & I'm wounding if she will understand once she is bigger to get into the car crate
For now, lifting might be necessary, but soon you can start using a ramp or stairs and teach her how to do it. For body handling tips (including picking her up comfortably) check out our body handling video here: ruclips.net/video/4IoITqJOmms/видео.html
Pro tip: It's not safe to have two dogs in the same crate, in the car or anywhere. You can have them each in their own crate or use a seatbelt harness and buckle them both in! We want to keep your pups safe!
Ive seen so many dogs climbing onto their owner's laps while driving. This puts the other motorsts at risk as well the dog. You can't drive a car while talking on a phone but for some reason it's ok to have a dog climbing all over you while you're driving.
Thanks for watching Dog Crate for Car Travel! How will your puppy be traveling in your vehicle?
I’m to young to drive, so I will be keeping the puppy safe at the back seat of the car.

What if you don’t have a car/don’t drive?
You can use these same techniques to desensitize the dog to whatever mode of transportation you will be using.
Do you put the crate close to you at night for the first few nights? Or leave the crate eventually where you want them to sleep?
Put the crate where you want it and get a air mattress and sleep next to them for the first week. They will need lots of late night potty breaks

By crate
My dogs first car ride IS NOT from a breeder. It's from a shelter and all my dogs first rides will be. Adopt don't shop.
Well it is okay to shop from both!
Adopt and shop responsibly. If you get a dog from a reputable breeder you won’t be contributing to the over populations of shelters.
