I needed to see this video right now. I love my 11 week old pup, but today he was giving me such a hard time. Biting, getting into places he shouldn’t be, peeing everywhere. Normal puppy stuff, but on a higher setting today. I never hit a dog, but I have made the mistake of grabbing his snout to avoid being bitten a couple times. He probably just had too much energy from being in the pen for most of the day while I worked, so I should’ve expected this. I’m definitely checking out that Better Behavior workshop if it’s still running 😅
We have a five month old female lab pup that goes SUPER crazy at the drop of a dime when playing outside or going out to go potty. She jumps uncontrollably and then begins biting at me constantly. I’ve tried the things I know to do and am getting nowhere. This happens after she’s been napping or if she’s been in the house for a while and in need of playtime …. So I’m unsure if she’s under or over tired. I’m sooo frustrated 😢 Any suggestions appreciated Thanks This comment was meant for the main chat and now it’s here after someone else’s comment and I’m hoping that @How to train a dream dog will see it
Shaping and lure training are new to me. All of our dogs have be trained using the correction method. Our Malinois is almost 5 months old and is doing well despite my lack of knowledge. I have noticed my partnership with him is much better using shaping behaviors. He actually believes I am the alpha and looks to me for approval. Thank you for all your help, love love love your videos 😍😍💖😍😍

I have a 9 month old cattle dog/pit mix that I adopted from a rescue (they told me he was over a year old). He's very sweet, but a high energy handful! lol. I live in a condo in a big city and he barks at everything he hears. He also gets the zoomies at night. I love him and am working with him diligently (already gone through a basic training class), but I've never had a dog this young. Any advice to stop the barking would be appreciated! I just found your videos and am loving them!
It sounds like you would really benefit from having a trainer come to your home to work with you and your pup. Here are two directories hat might be helpful: www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/ fearfreepets.com/resources/directory/
i have a question , i have a two month old toy poodle she is really cute and i think is not that kind of crazy dog but when we put her on a leash she will just sit down or lay down and not move , and we tryed to pull the leash with her then shestarted wining . even her favorite treat and toys dont work is there any ways to get my dog to love walking on leashes?thanks
At 2 months old the world around your pup can be very overwhelming! If your pup is on a leash, it’s important that you learn the “close to me, best place to be” game. This game is covered in great detail inside our 30 Days to Puppy Perfection program. It’s the at-home, online puppy program to help you and your puppy train together. howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course/ If your pup puts on the breaks and you keep saying things like “come on, come here” and you don’t get any response, you are now undoing what the command means and not getting the results you’re hoping for. If you take a step back toward your pup and release the pressure on the leash, your pup will have a hard time learning to move forward. If you’re trying to give treats to your pup on the walk and pup won’t take them, it’s because the distractions going on around are too high, no amount of information you’re giving can get thru to pup at that moment. Training games need to start at home and gradually add in distractions so when you’re out on the walk, the games come naturally and pup is eager to play them because they are familiar. The training games are all covered inside the online puppy training program.
She shouldn't be going on walks this young and this is how she's showing it to you. You can do training inside the house until she's around 4 months old.
leash biting is my #1 annoyance. She jumps and chomps on the leash, tries to play tug, I don't even know where to begin. Advice i've been given is to take it as play and stop that, but often she starts while we're crossing the road and not a place to stop.
@@ChrisHibs1875 lol, yeah we're past that, the solution 'canny collar'. it changed our relationship. its better for her body and mine and our walks are enjoyable.
I have a 3 month old shepherd / husky. He is doing the same thing. Jumping n biting the leash lots of pulling. He’s doing great with potty training n a few commands this is the only issue we are having. How do I correct him
This is normal doggy behavior so you can prevent it from happening, but at the same time provide him a healthy and acceptable outlet for the foraging. Busy boxes and snuffle mats and find it games are all great ways for him to do this.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you for your reply! You’re one of my favorite channels! Cookie Dough is an amazing dog! Very smart! Potty and crate trained, number 2 on command basically! He sits, waits until I release him to come out of the crate or take treats while sitting, mostly lol. I focused too much on learning training that the behavior training took a back seat. I’m starting to implement settle more often also a better schedule. It’s been working!
I might add though that this is made her really not wanting to be picked up and try to avoid me picking her up by backing up turning around turning sideways...
my 2 months male puppy snaps and growls when we try to brush his face or touch his face. he also resource guards. is there anyway for him to not act this way ? we dont want him growing with that kind of behavior. ive been doing positive reinforcement like giving him treats when doing something on his face but i still cant touch his face, he growls and snaps.
It sounds like you might be moving too fast and not listening to his signals that he wants you to stop or take a break. We have a great video on how to brush your puppy that we recommend in this situation: ruclips.net/video/XdDIbb_Z0Mg/видео.html
I Need this! My 5 month old wheaten has been “naughty” lately- but I know he just needs training and love! He’s so smart but lately has been regressing and causing lots of stress for my husband and I. He has started biting us when we try to pet him or if we need him to do something. He ignores us and walks away when we try training cues unless we have treats in hand- but only does it if we lure him with treats (he used to do things without treats because we started weaning). He’s started whining and barking in his crate- he used to not. He has had a crate aversion and leash aversion randomly pop up. We cannnnot break his jumping habit and it’s starting to cause problems with my little baby family members. He is laying down on walks. He doesn’t know how to calm down. A lot of these we’ve worked with him but so we are also at a loss for many behavioral issues. It’s been SO frustrating for us and I’m sure for him too 😢 We Need a lot of work but don’t know where to start and feel we are unfortunately going to have to untrain some behaviors first before we can effectively train in the good behaviors again. It’s so difficult since I feel we spend so much time training him, exercising him, challenging him, encouraging rest and naps, etc. Thanks for letting me vent - and thanks for the video!

Going through the same thing. My border collie mix was so obedient and nice first. He’s gotten older and now at 5 months he’s being more rebellious and is starting to run around, bite around and keep jumping everywhere.
How do I teach my ~ 1 year old puppy not to dig holes in my yard? I get not hitting a dog, but even its mother would physically correct it when it did something mom didn't like. So how do you communicate to a dog what behavior is not acceptable when there is no "positive" alternative? Or what about when the dog is clearly pushing boundaries and testing its place on the hierarchy? When a puppy loses it's mind as puppies do, how to you get it's attention and remind it who alpha is?
The alpha concept has been proven to be false when it comes to canine behavior. Research shows us that dogs learn best from positive reinforcement and teaching them what to do instead. When it comes to digging, this is a natural behavior that is good for dogs. So we suggest finding some ways to let your dog dig in specific spots or with specific toys. This video can help you! ruclips.net/video/r7OVeiQv74g/видео.html
I lived with a Chocolate Lab for 11 years. I forgot how hard it is to live with a puppy. I watch your video and I feel like I can do it. And no I dont have it at all. My 10 week old Treeing Walker Coonhound sometimes bites my legs, pulls my pants while on walks. But yes he is walking on leash. 😀 We have good days and bad days.
im in tears because of my dog im crying because i fed him this morning but since hes a puppy hes paly biting, he ripped up my favorite pajams, went into a strangers home, made me run 2 streets away from my house, and i have bruises all arouund my arms, he went into my home, woke up all my brothers, i have bruises around my arms and sometimes i just wish i could hit him i JUST WISH . but of course i dont do that.
We are so sorry you are struggling. This video can help you with the biting. ruclips.net/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/видео.html Don't forget good puppy proofing at the door so he can't escape. And making sure he's getting a lot of sleep in his crate!
Did anyone do potty training with a doggie door? My older dog was trained using a doggie door so I am trying to train our new 12 week old puppy to use it.
Doggie doors aren't always the most consistent way to potty train. For some dogs they work, others they don't! The downfall is that our dogs never learn how to communicate when they need to go, because they get to just go outside freely! This can work to your disadvantage if you ever visit someplace that doesn't have a doggie door.
Since my almost 8 month old puppy is SOO big, the main unwanted behaviors is jumping, biting and putting my 4 year old Dachshund and Shih Tzu mix's head in his mouth, or grabbing her neck and dragging her. These are the main ones. If these could change I feel the rest would actually slip into place.
Ah yes, this is very normal. We recommend starting with our Better Puppy Behavior Workshop to learn more about how your puppy’s brain works and how to adjust your training dial accordingly. Better Puppy Behavior Workshop howtotrainadreamdog.com/BPBWorkshop
Hi and thank you for putting out good content so we no right from wrong in how to address the situations! My puppy is a little over 2 months and just received their 2nd shots so he can't be outside or around strangers dogs... right now is the biting stage and I switch my hand or whatever he is biting to a chew bone. He will start chewing on it for a short period of time and then comes right back to biting me. How can I stop or correct him. My hands and body are getting bite marks and bleeding everyday!!!
Pups love to explore the world with their mouths. Just like a baby wants to put everything in their mouth, so does your pup! Make sure to always redirect your puppy to an appropriate chew toy such as a marrow bone, antler, or Kong filled with something tasty (you can even freeze the Kong to make it a teething toy). You have to make sure to make the toy fun and engaging instead of just stuffing it in your pup's mouth. If you redirect your pup and they consistently return to biting you, then it may be time to evaluate if they need to go get rid of some pent up energy, whether that is mental or physical energy. Take them on an age-appropriate walk or out to the backyard for some zoomies. Play some training games to burn off that mental energy. Keep in mind that puppies can also get overtired and cranky if they have too much stimulation or physical exercise, especially paired with a lack of mental exercise. Your pup may need to go down for a nap in the crate! Be aware that teething kicks into high gear usually around 3 to 4 months. You may even see an increase in chewing and biting around this time.
Another tip that can help you with biting: Pups are also drawn to movement! This means that when you’re walking, trying to pet your pup, playing down on their level, or even if you pull away quickly when they are biting, they are going to act like little land sharks and bite even more. Remember to constantly approach with a toy in hand and keep your pup on a leash so that you do not have to grab them and add to the frustration/frenzy. Puppies like to chase and nip at cats, kids, other dogs, etc...cats run away, children move sporadically and are lower to the ground, other dogs move quickly and can be a lot of fun! Remember, these are natural instincts and not your puppy being bad out of spite! You just need to teach them what you want them to do instead! Check out these videos all about puppy biting and what to do: Puppy Biting Tips ruclips.net/video/bn1nGZ9MgzQ/видео.html. Stop Puppy Nipping and Biting: ruclips.net/video/xE8cX0RIoPY/видео.html Puppies and Kids: ruclips.net/video/_4WlMg8lfs0/видео.html When it comes to biting, we really have to focus more on what we do want to see and build values in those behaviors in order to extinguish the ones we don't like. If we are becoming reactive/corrective (meaning we are only working through this when the puppy is already biting) we are actually going to reinforce the biting because it initiates engagement from you. There isn’t one thing that will make biting stop, there are several things that need to happen when working on teaching the right behaviors instead of biting. They are all like pieces to a puzzle that fit together. It does get worse before it gets better, but with proper training it can be managed until it goes away. It won't go away on its own, and may get worse without training. We have several games inside the 30 Days to Puppy Perfection program that help your pup learn alternate behaviors to biting: 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course/
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you so much for the quick response... I do keep him on a leash and do give him naps so that's great to hear I'm doing somethings to correctly train him. The toys that I got him aren't doing the trick of deferring him from biting me. I will watch the videos and see what toys he will hopefully like to play with... Are training treats a good way right now to reward him for chewing on the toys instead of me??? Again thank you so much for your help and how quickly you responded!!!
May I ask when using a Kong, do I have to fill it up so it's full? I tried putting a little bit of peanut butter and a couple of kibbles in there, as well as sealing the bottom hole with peanut butter, but she just licked the peanut butter sealing the hole and lost interest...and If filling to full, do you have to seal the top? I have a question, whenever I try to put my dogs harness on, he runs even at the sight of it. How do we teach him to be calm and sit while we put on his harness?
@@mrwitte I think you're right, it's about building a good association 🙂 you also want to go slow, they should introduce the harness without putting on to start with
We keep our pup in a collar and leash with the loop cut off at all times outside the crate. That way she can’t escape. Then when it’s time to put the harness on, you can treat and reward while just showing the dog the harness, while touching the harness to the dog, while putting it over the head, etc. it’s important to practice in stages before you need to put the harness on!
chewing shoes and slippers, taking them from the closet. We've had to barricade off our closets to preserve our shoes. But would like to know how to make the dog not interested in these things. We have your 30 days to a dream dog, but have not known how to curb this behavior. Our puppy is 6 months old and we've been working with him since 10 weeks through your videos.
Are you working on the games in the course? The "choice is yours" and "leave it" are great starters. Keep in mind shoes smell amazing to your dog so leaving them accessible is way too tempting for pup.
My moms German shepherd puppy doesn’t bite people, but he’s messing with all the other dogs in the house… and messing with our cats… it’s driving me nuts 😵💫
My dog constantly nipping at me when I put on his collar, or when I put on a T-shirt he is five months old Havanese puppy and I don’t know what to do any suggestions?
Our Mini- Schnauzer puppy does this, too. So, is it your t-shirt he's tugging, or you're putting one on him? When we got our boy it was bitterly cold, so I did put a jumper on him, but I don't really like clothes for dogs otherwise. Best thing for the collar is to be ready, collar should already be attached to the lead, move as swiftly and gently as you can, talk to him gently as you do it, use the clip kind of collar for speed, not the buckle kind, and don't remove it till the end of the day, that way you minimise the problem. Hope it's improving by now, anyway 🙂
Spray bottle works . Idk why they make it seem like it’s hurting them . Just don’t over do it . Associate the spray with a word like “no” just like you would do with a clicker and treats . Took me to days now I say no and he stops biting no spray bottle
@@isaiahrobinson20 you don't ever want to make a dog dislike water, they need to be bathed! A spray-bottle doesn't help them to bond with you, which is ultimately what you want 🙂🐶
Ignore the bad, reward the good behaviour. Some people suggest for jumping you turn your back. Give lots of soft praise when your dog is sitting calmly 🙂
Hi I'm a new dog owner...brought a golden retriever 2 days ago...he is 2 months old male and very cute...me and my daughters play with him all the time...but in middle of playing out of nowhere he starts running, jumping biting everywhere. and acts completely different and starts biting his toys and then starts biting me and my daughters...everyone is saying hes teething....but he bites real hard and his teeth is sharp...he starts biting on pant ...pulls our shirt or sweater then starts biting on skin and bites very hard and starts growling makes grrrr grrrr noise which is scary...my kids are scared of playing with him now...please help!!
My wee pup does this too. My hands a chew toy unfortunately. We have only had her a week. So far we have found putting her chew toys in her month instead of my hands, saying no if she goes for my hands but saying good girl with the toy. We also realised she was getting hyper with the dog treats, so we switched to giving her her dried food and that's seemed to help keep her calm. I probably seem boring to her but if she gets too playful and starts nipping I stand away from her and keep myself calm so that would start to calm her down. I'm not a good puppy mum, but I'm enjoying it xx hope this helps and hope your all getting on okay ♡♡

And what the idea of when the dog is biting you and you give him a toy so you price him. The puppy will think ok next home when I want to get this toy I just need to bite my owner. What is the argument against that?
You give the toy BEFORE the puppy bites you. If puppy does bite, silently walk away from him and turn your back for about ten seconds, then come back with a toy ready to give him so that he doesn't get a chance to do the wrong thing.

Dogs don't pee out of spite. It could be "excitement pee" which often happens when young puppies have extreme emotions. But dogs don't pee to get back at you. It's a natural bodily function and they don't care where they go. Its up to the human to teach it in a way that the dog understands.

If your puppy has been home for less than a few weeks, it's likely the stress of her new environment could be affecting her diet. If you are truly concerned, this should be something you talk with your pup's veterinarian about!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog it has been 3 weeks now and I still have to chase after her with her food bowl, to barely manage a little less than the recommended amount each day. Vet said that's normal and that she has to do the same with her dog. I have found some "higher"-value treats that create a bit of engagement, but it's nothing close to the kind of drive to get more treats, which dogs in youtube videos seem to have.
Sounds like you have a high-energy dog. I'd consider increasing their exercise regime, as well as 'de-sensitising' to the door with the help of a friend.
I got my very first puppy a few weeks ago. I'm just getting over a case of Puppy blues and my two main issues are that: 1) She wants to play with the cat, and the cat wants to play with her…but she quickly goes from play to chase…and 2) She doesn’t play well with any dogs other than her mom and my sister’s dog. She’s very vocal and enthusiastic during play. Her noises (snarls, her brother from a previous litter plays the same way) intimidate other dogs, including her own litter mates. I’ve been trying to use distraction with toys, baby gates to keep them separate, and the annoying “ah!” noise to get her to stop (I know it’s not the best method, but sometimes the toys aren’t enough to get her attention). The method that seems to be working best though seems to be where my sister and I hold onto both and try to let them interact with us not allowing any funny business. My sister’s dog was a much calmer puppy, she didn’t need any help with interacting with our cat. My Maize however, concerns me. I hope I can get her to play nicely with other dogs and at least ignore our cat. I feel discouraged most times, but I’m not giving up yet. She’s 10 weeks at the moment. She knows her name and usually comes when called. She knows ‘sit’ and ‘paw’. Now working on ‘down’. I’m hoping that training ‘down’, ‘relax’, and ‘wait’ will help with this issue.

I live in a condo in a big city and he barks at everything he hears. He also gets the zoomies at night. I love him and am working with him diligently (already gone through a basic training class), but I've never had a dog this young. Any advice to stop the barking would be appreciated! I just found your videos and am loving them!
It sounds like you would really benefit from having a trainer come to your home to work with you and your pup.

i have a question , i have a two month old toy poodle she is really cute and i think is not that kind of crazy dog but when we put her on a leash she will just sit down or lay down and not move , and we tryed to pull the leash with her then shestarted wining . even her favorite treat and toys dont work is there any ways to get my dog to love walking on leashes?thanks
At 2 months old the world around your pup can be very overwhelming! If your pup is on a leash, it’s important that you learn the “close to me, best place to be” game. This game is covered in great detail inside our 30 Days to Puppy Perfection program. It’s the at-home, online puppy program to help you and your puppy train together.
howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course/
If your pup puts on the breaks and you keep saying things like “come on, come here” and you don’t get any response, you are now undoing what the command means and not getting the results you’re hoping for.
@@cristinemont yes i know we are trying to get her to be used to the leash and do †ricks on leashs thanks for your advice tho
So a 2 month old shouldnt be gping out for walks?
leash biting is my #1 annoyance. She jumps and chomps on the leash, tries to play tug, I don't even know where to begin. Advice i've been given is to take it as play and stop that, but often she starts while we're crossing the road and not a place to stop.
Mine does too
Have you tried making it taste horrible? Bitter Apple spray seems to get good reviews!
Edit: Just noticed this was over a year ago, sorry😂
@@ChrisHibs1875 lol, yeah we're past that, the solution 'canny collar'. it changed our relationship. its better for her body and mine and our walks are enjoyable.
I have a 3 month old shepherd / husky. He is doing the same thing. Jumping n biting the leash lots of pulling. He’s doing great with potty training n a few commands this is the only issue we are having. How do I correct him
Working on no rough play and no jumping.
How would you go about dogs going through trash can
This is normal doggy behavior so you can prevent it from happening, but at the same time provide him a healthy and acceptable outlet for the foraging. Busy boxes and snuffle mats and find it games are all great ways for him to do this.
My corgi puppy can at times, mostly when we wake up, have too much energy and then be too drained! No in between lol
This gets better as the dog ages, and also with training. Cool down routines can be very helpful!
Working on nipping at us and everything else from the moment she wakes to the moment she crates at night lol. Thanks for the videos Michelle!
I might add though that this is made her really not wanting to be picked up and try to avoid me picking her up by backing up turning around turning sideways...
Did you guys find any solutions for this or did time just have to take its course as they matured? What eventually worked?😢
my 2 months male puppy snaps and growls when we try to brush his face or touch his face. he also resource guards. is there anyway for him to not act this way ? we dont want him growing with that kind of behavior. ive been doing positive reinforcement like giving him treats when doing something on his face but i still cant touch his face, he growls and snaps.

Don't forget good puppy proofing at the door so he can't escape.

P. S. Merry Christmas to everyone
Dont do it
Hi and thank you for putting out good content so we no right from wrong in how to address the situations!
Check out these videos all about puppy biting and what to do:

When it comes to biting, we really have to focus more on what we do want to see and build values in those behaviors in order to extinguish the ones we don't like.
We have several games inside the 30 Days to Puppy Perfection program that help your pup learn alternate behaviors to biting: 30 Days to Puppy Perfection:

Thank you so much for the quick response...
Thank you so much 🙏

I have a question, whenever I try to put my dogs harness on, he runs even at the sight of it. How do we teach him to be calm and sit while we put on his harness?
I'm going to guess the answer is high-value-treat-related
@@mrwitte I think you're right, it's about building a good association 🙂 you also want to go slow, they should introduce the harness without putting on to start with
We keep our pup in a collar and leash with the loop cut off at all times outside the crate. That way she can’t escape. Then when it’s time to put the harness on, you can treat and reward while just showing the dog the harness, while touching the harness to the dog, while putting it over the head, etc. it’s important to practice in stages before you need to put the harness on!
How do i get my dog to stop jumping on the counters?
Reward them heavily for four paws on the floor and restrict access to the kitchen while they are learning this
chewing shoes and slippers, taking them from the closet. We've had to barricade off our closets to preserve our shoes. But would like to know how to make the dog not interested in these things.

Yes ,does someone one know how to stop this because my dog does it too
Maybe he gets to much impulses and gets overwhelmed

Congrats!! Hang in there. We might be able to help you best at the Pro-Level where you can submit photos and videos in our private student-only facebook group for our trainers to review and give feedback to. You can also have a back-and-forth conversation with them on one of the three zoom calls a week. Check it out here: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
