- Across India, measures targeting meat consumption have amplified since Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected in 2014, from the closure of meat shops to increasing the jail term for cow slaughtering. Hindu extremists are leading this wave of "vegetarian nationalism". Butchers in the state of Haryana, who are predominantly Muslim, have been forced to close their shops every Tuesday, while "cow protectors" stop and search vehicles they suspect of transporting the animals - actions that can turn deadly. According to a 2019 Human Rights Watch report, at least 44 people have been killed by "cow protectors" in India since 2015. Thirty-six of them were Muslims. Our correspondents report.

Because some animals such as rabbits, cows, chickens, pigs, were given to us by God to eat. Humans can’t get the correct protein out of nuts and other protein sources that meat has. If we weren’t supposed to eat meat, we wouldn’t be eating it. They just need more humane ways of doing it. Free range is always better. And more humane

I read many books about the history of Harappan culture, Vedic culture, modern India, the temples, carnatic and Hindustani music, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Islam, Sufism, the different schools of Hinduism, (Advait and Shakti primarily).. I've read the Gita many times, gone to temple, chanted the Hanuman Chalisa, sang kirtans and bhajans. I studied the pre and post British Raj era, the partition, I study the geography, climate, and politics. I love the people I know from India. But I am not Hindu by birth.
