- Seattle has become the first city in the US to ban discrimination on the basis of caste.
The city has a large South Asian population, many working in the technology sector.
In the future, caste will be identified in its own class, alongside race, religion and gender identity.
The caste system in India dates back over 3,000 years and divides Hindu society into rigid hierarchical groups.
This can lead to discrimination and violence against those considered to be in the lowest classes - particularly the Dalit, or 'untouchables'.
Kshama Sawant, the Seattle city councillor behind the legislation, and Pulitzer prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson, join Christian Fraser and his panel to put the new law into context.

With the greatest respect to my North Indian fellow citizens racism and discrimination is rampant in India. You only have to travel north to hear derogatory remarks about South Indians based on colourism mixed with casteism. Unfortunately the Indian diaspora has brought this attitude with them to the West. This issue needs to be recognised and addressed quickly

Culturally- indians are servile to an archaic , backward social system, and embrace outdated cultural norms. They know that it is a backward system but is ingrained in ther psyche no matter how "westernized' an asian indian is. Its not their fault, but until it changes in India, they will not be able to help it, it will be considered whattheir people do. I worked with people from india as IT consultants, they were so bewildered meeting someone of indo caribbean descent, that didnt embrace their indian cultural norms nor understand them. I found a few of them to be quite standoff -ish and socially aloof and found them rather comical.

For our Western people who don't know what caste system is, I would like to request you to kindly read the writings of B. R. Ambedkar. Way back to 1916, 25-years old Ambedkar, a student of Columbia University, read his paper titled "Castes in India: Their Mechanism, Genesis and Development."
In this paper, he commented that "if Indians move to other parts of the world, the Hindu caste system will become a global problem."
So, Ambedkar can give you the most authentic explanation of what caste system is and who are the perpetrators.

I am not Indian but have many times witnessed subtle caste based discrimination amongst the Indians in companies like Toyota Motor Sales @toyota @tfs and Toyota Financial Services especially with their outsourced IT vendors. Worst if the subordinate is of Muslim or Islam. The Indians are extremely exclusive and only choose their own regardless of qualifications. The discrimination is oppressive. Have witnessed good employees leaving which is unfortunately for employers. In itself, caste culture is slavery liked!

Caste discrimination has not been banned in India. Untouchability has been banned but then again, you can ban a lot of things or pass hundreds of laws on paper. Most people don't follow it or are not aware about it either.

Enforcing these laws is extremely difficult in practice over here. Most of us don't know what our rights as a worker/employees or as a Human and aren't aware about the new Labour laws. And if we do, employers deny our rights. Most people don't care or worry about Human Rights laws either. If we tell them our rights they'll ask us in return - "What have you done to gain these rights? You don't deserve it."
We are also on the brink of touching 50 million pending cases in our courts across India at all the levels. Our current Union Law & Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju even revealed this publicly multiple times recently. Even former Justices of High Courts, Supreme courts & Lawyers practising in those courts have routinely said it the interviews, newspapers, magazines & on television.

One just needs to go to temples and hindu organizations in US to see who are managing those and those who are priests, they are brahmins, last names suggest which caste one is and can be subtlely used for mentoring, referring, supporting in higher education,work and in all walks of life. As an African American I've been a victim of discrimination from an Indian before. I'm dark skinned and my cousin is light skinned. We were both regular patrons of an Indian business in our neighborhood back in the 90s. The male owner was always nice to my light skinned cousin but he was cold towards me for no reason. I didn't know anything about the caste system at the time. And I'm not sure if that was the reason, but I never trusted light skinned Indian men from then on. BTW, his wife was young, cool & friendly and I used to joke around with her sometimes. But I never got out of line with her in any way. Even still, maybe he was jealous 🤷🏾♂️

Just because you haven't experienced caste based discrimination doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I haven't faced caste discrimination directed towards me but I have seen it happening many times. Honestly, everyone speaks their mind but only in their safe space because they know it has been criminalised and saying something casteist will put them in trouble. So, they usually never say it in public but I a group where there are only upper caste people (Our last names indicate our caste you don't even need to ask someone's caste to know their caste. You know when you are in the safe space).
The most common is I would say usage of casteist slurs. This happened when I was in college. One of my very senior professor, whom I used to respect a lot because he was so good at teaching his subject (he always sounded like a wise, smart old man), used a casteist slur against SC people and said we should never pass through the area where they live as they are untouchables. I was stunned but everyone was normal as if nothing happened.
Second and another most common thing I hear is when people say that SC people can never excel in studies as this is not their "fitrat", unka dimag kabhi padhai me lagega nahi kyunki unki formation hi different Hui hai, different kaam k liye Hui hai (here they were talking about the low academic performance of many SC kids ignoring that most of them come from underprivileged homes).
Another very common casteist/classist act is keeping separate utensils for maids, some societies even have separate lifts for them. Here also, I hear a lot that people don't want a cook from an SC caste because they doubt their cleanliness habits. Talk to the aunties in your society, this as actually very common.
Apart from this, there are many incidents in news on casteism. It is a superiority complex that is never going to end.
If you ask an upper caste person to ditch their caste indicative last name they will most likely refuse. On the contrary, you will see people flaunting their caste on vehicles. No, flaunting caste on vehicle is not discrimination but that shows the superiority complex the person has in their mind.

I didn’t realize caste discrimination was present in the West because I always assumed caste discrimination was sort of a hold over among the uneducated or rural populations in South Asia, and that the SA diaspora wouldn’t carry that over. What I see will happen in US as most upper cast have migrated due to their access to education and money and hence were able migrate from India. And they have gotten into prominent positions in businesses, corporates, institutions both private and public and now you start to see them in politics too. Even many of the so called "upper" castes in India cannot understand the concept of caste discrimination and how they have benefitted immensely at the cost of the "lower" castes. So expecting foreign law enforcement to understand casteism as a form of discrimination is quite impossible unless there is a separate law dedicated to it. Casteism is more often than not between people of the same race. Nor is it classism because a poor upper caste would not face casteism but a rich lower caste person could (anyway the majority of the poor in India are from the lower castes)
Reservation helps low caste people get into govt colleges and pursue a rich career with very low marks and rankings, something upper caste youth struggles with, what do you mean when you say upper caste benefits from lower caste. If somebody is too poor, they don't even pay income tax, only 5% of Indians pay income tax, because others don't even earn enough money to pay.

Its little or non existent if they are from different places and if they are not aligned to the hard right fronts from india. 25 years ago I spoke with a high caste Indian co-worker. He had married a lower caste Indian, and moved to the U.S. to get away. He warned me about the caste system. He explained that the Indians who were in the U.S. at that time (1999) were lower caste members. He told me that high caste Indians were just starting to come here. Scary how prescient he was. I have definitely noticed the difference

India's Politics to education to government employment everywhere High Casts are privileged. Universities , schools or news medias, big institutions. etc. . In school to university Muslim, Christians , Dalit or low casts Hindu students have separate place to sit. Indian news media can't talk about it because their news medias controlled or owned by high cast people.

Come on caste system has never be banned in India, in paper yes. The indian caste thrive on this system. they are officers, own big business and got previledged access to services and facilities. It engraved in their religion, The person from lower caste cant enter into the Hindu temple. what kinds of religion teaches it. Where every reigon is teaching about equality anf justice for everybody.

You can't come to a foreign country as the U.S. and disrespect the very people, who you walk past every day and don't even exhibit basic civic courtesy, who are responsible and have literally & figuratively gotten their asses kicked in efforts to support having you allowed to come here in the first place. The next time you encounter a Black American, just say "Thanks" & treat us with the same respect we see you giving everybody else.
