That is not how the caste system works in South Asia. There is caste in south asia (india, sri lanka, pakistan, nepal, Bangladesh) , Europe, Africa (west, central and horn), Asia and America. Its not based on the colour of the skin. Caste is tribe, community and clan. Colorism came into place when colonization occured. The whole idea fair skin is superior. Thats how colonization corrupted mostly indians mindet.
An average south asian range from fair skin to dark skin. There is upper caste south asian who are dark as an African and fair skinned like a european. At the same time, there are untouchables who fair skin with european features and dark skin with african features. In south asia, there is upper caste who darker than an average black/african person.
In India, there are 3500 caste/tribe. There is a caste for gangs, thieves, prostitution, and witchcraft. These caste are considered dalits/ untouchable. Caste existed before colonization. In India, the British divided them into forward (upper caste) , backward (dalit), scheduled castes (dalits) etc.

@Sahilrao-123 Dalits themselves do caste discrimination among themselves.
If casteism cannot be eliminated among Dalits itself it is the problem of Dalits, the dalit groups itself.

This was a brilliant interview, show casing something that is often considered taboo to even talk about. My Family lived in the Middle East for a long time, and when I was in high school, returned to South India where my parents were from. The first day of school, a lady from the office came and called out my name. She was holding a register, and asked what caste I was, as my parents didn't fill it in the form. I said, 'I don't know my caste'. Almost 35 years later, I can still hear the loud gasp that came from my classmates....in shock that I didn't know what my caste was. Till then, it didn't matter and my parents didn't feel the need to tell me about that. The lady holding the register looked at me in shock. She said, 'You don't know what caste you are? Go home and ask your Father!' LOL now....but at the time, I was made to feel so bad. When it comes time for marriage, is when the caste system is mentioned the most. I also have to add, that we are Christians. So it doesn't matter what religion you are in India, the original caste that your ancestors were, carries on with you generations later. So happy to see this segment.

And who is responsible for it carrying through even in Christanity or Islam in India. It's a societal issue and not religional. Secondly no scripture ot ancient text ever said birth based caste system. Society just fell off over time and now Hinduism is made to carry the burden of this crap.

It is the people for sure. Even the quota for seats for medical admissions etc is wrong. It should be based on education and help the poor to get educated in the schooling system to be on par for the exams. On another point, people can be educated, but still go back to these practices when facing society for issues like marriage. Will be great when all of this is behind us. Newspapers and Matrimonial sites should also ban the practice of asking people what caste they are. Schools should not ask either.

I’ve had Indian friends growing up tell their parents hate me because of their ways back home also on the TTC a lot of East Asians have the odd idea to invade my space and even tell me a black Canadian man that although I’m already sitting down on the train, I need to immediately get up and give my seat over to them ( usually Indian people that seem to be newcomers). One fellow man even tried to berate me because I should know to give up my seat. I told him “ this is Canada, don’t bring that caste system bs over here, assuming because I’m black I’m supposed to make way for you is comedy at best buddy”.
If I was born with my brown skin in India I would be considered untouchable, would have no rights snd would permanently be stuck under everyone else in perpetuity.

People who think they are better than others or have to treat people in that way usually have moral issues and low self esteem. Sad how humans can treat people in such a way. No matter where I found myself in life, I never looked down my nose on anyone. It hurt me as she referred to her family as an "untouchable.." Castes/unequal power relations are made to keep a certain order in society and to benefit those who create the system and ensure their future generations that same privilege. Humans are terrible to each other. Castes, classism, colorism, racism, nationalism, etc. All moral issues that start in the hearts of man.

There are Dalits among doctors, administrative service officers, military officers, government service officials in India. This is largely due to generous reservations in colleges, in administrative services, and in government job postings. So its a lie that Dalit is an inescapable class.
But caste discrimination does still exist in marriages, and in social acceptance, that's a fact.
Also, not sure why or how she faced caste based discrimination in Canada. I have lived in Canada, and later on in USA for 25 years, raised 2 daughters, sent them through high school and college, and the elder one is about to get married to an Indian origin man. Never have we, or our daughters, faced any caste based discrimination from the Indian society, or even any caste related questions. And we are dark skinned Dravidians from south India, where caste is still a big social issue. My point is, the caste system is very much a part of Indian social structure, but when educated Indians move abroad, they leave the caste system behind. So In our experience, caste system is not present in the fabric of the Indian society in north America.

There is caste division within the Sri Lankan Tamil population. Marriage is between two people and family. One shouldnt force someone to marry against their will. I wouldn't call that caste discrimination in marriages. An individual has the right to say "yes" or "no" to intercaste marriages. Some wouldn't leave the caste system. Most of the upper caste sri lankan tamil in Canada tend to marry within themselves who came during the 70s and 80s. The dalit sri lankan tamil in Canada tend to operate gangs in the 90s and 2000s. There is caste divison within the Sri Lankan tamil communtiy.

There are castes/tribes in South Asia - India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan; Europe (royals, peasants), America (segregation of whites (indentured servants) and blacks (slaves were forced to America by their own peers), Asia, and Africa. Caste existed for centuries and it wasnt brought by the colonizers. Out of all the southern Asian countries, India is the worst when comes it caste and colorism. Dont watch a Bollywood movie and perceive that's what an average Indian look like. Most Bollywood celebrities are mixed, middle eastern.

So is every single ideology chief. I'd say Hinduism is the least rooted in racism. No Blasphemy within it.
"Racism" comes within this ideology when it comes time to marry someone from your Ethnocultural background. Because we're looking at preserving the culture. Discrimination is going to occur here.
This discrimination is also towards every outsider. Not just darker skinned people.

In rural societies of Indian, there is no need of any kind of menial work. Even still today. So why there be any untouchable caste ?
Neither ‘caste’ word is Indian nor ‘Zaat/Jaat’ . Zaat is Arabic word having sense of status. None of ancient Indian person have surname to identify caste. It’s Europian tradition. They have surname like Smith, Goldsmith, Gardner, shoemaker etc etc, indicating their ancestor’s work.
Every religion in South Asia have caste system, which was imposed on them by outsiders invaders.

In Bharat(or India) we don't considers CASTE important anymore... well the system have been destorted and made rigid by the Britishers... which was previously extremely and based not upon your birth but, your work... the name of that system is... VARNA SYSTEM. This matter of CASTE SYSTEM is used by everyone who wants to harm Sanatan Dharma(famously known as Hinduism), Sanatanis(famously known as Hindus) and Bharat(famously known as India)... who don't want to see the culture spread and that civilization grow... as it got answers to all the flaws out there... and also the growth and strengthening of Bharat. I have many friends in USA and Canada... I have never seen them doing such things in the name of caste and Sanatan Dharma... how can it be, when its not a matter even in Bharat?
PEOPLE WATCHING THIS... AND THINKING THAT ITS TRUE... I REQUEST TO RESEARCH MORE ABOUT THIS CASTE MATTER... AND ALSO TO VISIT BHARAT TO CROSS CHECK YOUR KNOWLEDGE. I AM TELLING YOU ALL... ITS A SIMPLE AND TYPICAL ATTEMPT TO HARM SANATAN DHARMA AND THAT GREAT CIVILIZATION... AND NOTHING ELSE!!!
