I think it may depend on who you are buying it from. I very recently bought a second hand car from a dealer. He mostly buys his cars off auction, and once in a while, they are minus the V5C. He came down to the post office with me to help me to apply for a new one and to tax the vehicle. He knocked 25 quid off the price of the car. The new document turned up four weeks later.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting To be fair, before I parted with any money at all, I did pay for the full history/finance check, etc. Maybe I was lucky, because everything has turned out OK in the end. 🤷♂️
Good advice, Joseph, as you said the lack of a V5 may be nothing to worry about but the hassle factor with the DVLA and tine would put me off. It is surprising though, how many advertisements you still see where the V5 needs to be applied for!
Yes, lots and lots of adverts for older cars in particular show that the V5 is missing, this is a much bigger deal than some people realise. Thank you again, sir!
This is a really good advice video, I've always been put off when it says "you need to apply for a V5"... I instantly think suspicious things. My friends say never to worry about this... but there is a good reason!
My goodness me are there good reasons for questioning why someone selling a car does not have a V5! It is a shame that so many people who watched the old version of this video only realised why they really needed to see a V5 far too late...
Unless the car was really low value like in the hundreds for like spares or a project then I may go for it. However if the seller is serious they should sort out a replacement, let them have the hassle. I’ve walked away from a really good car because of the lack of logbook.
Yes, it's just not worth it most of the time. Sometimes, if a car has been in a garage for 30 odd years and the owner has passed away, the V5 may be missing, but for the majority of the time, it is not worth taking on the task as a buyer which should be up to the seller.
Im planning to buy a car. What do i need to ask the seller and should i take any documentation from the seller on the day i buy the car. Thank you. What is the step by step.
That is a good question. I might make a video about it one day. It's a bit too much information to put into a simple reply to a RUclips comment, as it does vary depending on what car you are looking at, but there are some basic universal principles for all purchases. Send me an e-mail (address on screen early on in the video) if you wish to discuss it further.
I’d always suggest to the seller of a car “without V5 but easy to obtain” that I’ll buy it if you get the V5 if they can’t be bothered they aren’t keen to sell. I’d only go for it if it was for spares or I was willing to lose money…..
Yes, there are very few legitimate reasons for a missing V5 when selling a car, and so one is right to be suspicious.... Thank you again for watching, sir, it only took me three and a half years to improve this video!
Hi I bought BMW the previous owner applied online on 4 August still I’m calling to dvla still they keeping gaves me new date 2 weeks 4 weeks 5 working days but nothing yet I’m confused what to do what the hell is that I’m new keeper
I don't think I have much more to say, unfortunately... The seller's responsibility is to get the V5 filled in and sent off when the car is sold. If they have failed to do that at point of sale, it can cause quite a few issues.
Great video👍🏽 Quick question, Is there any way of taxing a car without the v5 if I have filled out the v62 do I simply have to wait for the v5 to turn up before I can tax it?
I am afraid that, as I think I explained in the video, you cannot tax the car unless you have a valid V5 in your name or the V5C/2 (new keeper's slip). You will have to wait until the new one comes, sadly. I hope that helps!
@@lloydvehicleconsulting bro same situation can not do road tax and I applied v62 form six weeks ago but still not got any reply from dvla what i can do

I am desperate to buy a car within this weekend as I need it to work and the car I own at the moment can not start and I need to scrap it. But I still need another one as I said. I contacted with few private owners and I will go tomorrow to see some of them. One of the private owners told me he does not have the log book and I would need to apply for it... at the moment he told me that I changed my mind about going for that one. I don't know a lot about it but something is telling me I should never buy it without the V5.
Absolutely. Take a brave pill. Some surety seller has legal title. It’s far from ideal. Though. Logbooks don’t show Category accidents unless A or B so matters less than one thinks.
I recently bought a car but the owner gave an older v5c. The latest v5c was through his company thats bankrupt and I pay cash. When I tried to tax the car it didn't go through. Unfortunately I dont have the latest info and I applied for v62. The car shows as taxt and insured but not under my name. I recently transferred my insurance from my old car. But still im waiting for my v5c. Almost 3 weeks now. Do I need to keep off the road?
This is a very unique situation, sadly. Technically, you can't drive the car on the road, as you have not taxed it in your name, so you should be keeping it off road until that new V5C arrives, and you can tax it properly. The new V5 can take six weeks or more to come, sadly, in some cases....
@rgxll9315 Bro, unfortunately, I still haven't got my v5, and it has been more than 5 months. I got a letter requesting pictures of the car all around with the VIN number. When I called a month after sending pics, they told me to wait another 7 weeks, maybe cause of holiday's. I called after 9 weeks and they told me we don't have the pictures on my fileand I have to resend it. So I found the old email with the pics and called them back, and they found it. After that, they said we are waiting for clearance and that everything is OK with the car. So basically, I'm still waiting. I have the car insured under my name and I use it but I dont think I'm supposed to. The moral of the story call them every week and ask for any updates on your case.
