Curious fact: Old Market Square was nearly razed to the ground after the Battle of Poznań in january - february 1945. It was rebuilt after war. Town Hall was completely burned.

Where there is a prince and a court, there is a capital. Poznań and Gniezno played such a role at the beginning of the Polish state. In the Tumska cathedral there is the tomb of the first Polish King Bolesław the Brave (Bolesław Chrobry). Lech, Lechita is the term for ancient Poles. Legend says. There were three brothers. They were called; Lech, Czech and Rus. Rus went east. Czech went south. Lech went west. Lech saw a huge oak with a white eagle's nest. He decided to settle there. The nest in Polish is gniazdo. The name of the place is Gniezno. A city near Poznań. The name Lech you remember from Gdansk - Lech Walęsa. Poznań is my hometown.

Every city or town in Poland is different. But you noticed something they have in common - they were made for people. Tourist are people as well as locals, that's why you feel comfortable everywhere in Poland.

After the old town square check out the Imperial Castle - Zamek Cesarski.
Poznan during austrian occupation was a fortress and you can still find some remainings of the military building in the city.
Poznan also is the place where Poland started as a country. There is a museum by the Warta river I recommend.

According to Forbes, Poznan is the top in Poland in a category so called "open city". It means it is a city, where living looks the way it should. Good public transport, top universities, lowest unemployment level, a lot of green areas etc. Also that citizens of Poznan can really affect changes in the city. Link below, unfortunately in polish :p

Daneger and Stacey who I am sure you know have put out a great book on the same subject, there may be some good tips in there for you Justina to increase your flexibility with work, you can find it here..... gumroad.com/a/821343347
My wife and I hope to travel at least 6 months of the year when the kids fly the nest so slowly transitioning now to non location based work is our goal...

Difficult or almost inpossible to say which city is the "best " not only for Poland but for any country. I personally dont see much sense in making such comparisons. Every single has its "climate" history, vibe ...So, when it comes to Warsaw, you should expect some "energetic, crowdy, busy places to see but also with the "old town" and things like that :)

Warsaw is different to the likes os Poznań or Gdańsk. It has many different districts and they all look different. The “tourist town” is the old town and a street called the new world, which ironically “was” much older then the old town. Then there is Śródmieście (city centre) which was mostly build up in the 50s, 60s and 70s but is now being knocked down and replaced with shiny glass buildings. Then there is Wola which is a formed industrial area now becoming a brand new office area. Then there is Praga which was mostly untouched during ww2. Then there are residential areas built in the 50s-80s like Mokotów and residential areas built in the 90s like Wilanów. It is a much bigger cake,it is a very dynamic and very rapidly changing city. The exact opposite of the likes of Kraków. I highly recommend the Vistula boulevards if you go there. I also recommend “fly spot” and the soon to be opened park of Poland (largest indoor water park in Europe)
