There's other forms of backlight strobing that are actually good like ASUS TUF ELMB sync and ULMB sync on some gsync compatible monitors. I've heard the Acer 270hz 1440p has really good backlight strobing for an ips panel and might be what you're looking for

You can definitely see a little more than just that, lmao. xD
360 Hz is great, but, unless the individual pixels can keep up with that refresh rate, the difference you're going to see between a 240 hz and a 360 hz is that the 360 hz is a smudgy-a** mess.
That being said, his solution to the problem was stupid, lmao... he could've just set his 360 IPS monitor (The one with superior color presentation) to 240 hz, instead of getting a TN monitor (Dogsht colors, all yellow and green, ugh...). xD

They say that with smoothness and image clarity during fast motions we tend to really notice doubles. From 30 to 60 is a nobrainer. From 60 to 120 is huge. From 120 to 240 is definitely noticeable (especially in image clarity during motion) but 240 to 360 is more like going from 120 to 165. It's noticeable, but probably wouldn't be worth the upgrade. 240 to 480 would, however, be noticeable to most people as long as you point them at what to look for (basically viewing it more as motion blur reduction than actually being or feeling much smoother or more direct). Apparently it'd take around 1000hz/fps to have motion clarity equal to the good CRT screens from before most people reading this were born. They didn't have sample-and-hold technology and therefore could be 'stuttery', but technically didn't have motion blur. Hell, it's possible for fast motions to appear *much* sharper and clearer on such a monitor than in real life. As weird as that may sound.

Motion clarity is such an underrated feature of gaming monitors that almost no manufacturer advertises properly. Even some of the nastiest VA panels with horrible ghosting and smearing can be advertised as "1ms". It's why I steered away from the Asus PG35VQ (200hz VA panel) and went for the LG 38GN950 instead (160hz IPS). There is no way to truly know how good a monitor is in this department without a proper reviewer showing the real response times across all colors with different overdrive modes. Tim from Hardware Unboxed has done a great job there, though.

I agree 100% with your conclusions and it's why IMO a 160Hz CRT feels very similar to a 240Hz LCD. 360Hz (and even higher refresh rates) are the way forward but response times probably aren't there yet. There is another aspect you didn't mention and that's actually being able crank out consistent frames to support a clean 360Hz, that's the reason alone why I also use 240Hz over 360Hz.
Also if you want to go farther into these sorts of comparisons a zisworks lcd can show you a lot. It's the same panel doing 120/240/360/480Hz (depending on the res)

I'd love to see your thoughts on seeing the backlight strobing of the ASUS VG248QE. This monitor sold me on BFI many, many years ago. You'd have to find one used at this point, but it is well worth it. It has the best implementation of strobing as the monitor was intended for 3D viewing. Since then, I have yet to find a clearer monitor.
The issue with BFI that no one mentions is that it is inserting a black frame. Meaning, a 240Hz panel is showing you 120Hz of information, since every other frame is black. The ASUS VG248QE could only run at 120Hz, and thus a 60Hz BFI image. I eventually got rid of it, but no other monitor has a clearer BFI implementation than that one. However, modern panels are probably clearer in terms of raw visibility just because our manufacturing processes have gotten better. A TN panel from 6 years ago is not the same as a TN panel from now-a-days.

I find it funny how many people there are out there who get tricked into thinking that paying so much extra for 240hz or 360hz monitors is worth it for them. Most people are going to be much better off spending their budget on monitors which are better in other areas, or on other components in their PC (or just saving that money). There are so many other features of monitors worth paying for, such as size, response times, contrast ratio, colour quality, text clarity, build quality, etc.. As long as the response time is good (and I realize that usually response times are not that good), 120 or 144hz is already great even for online action games, and most people don't seriously play any online action games seriously enough for it to actually matter anyway (and not all action games benefit much from having a good response time even if you ARE very serious about how you play them).

Pretty much, any 360 hertzs monitors and beyond currently on the market have less pixel precision when aiming than the Zowie XL2546k with it's DyAc technology, right now the only reason to get one is to reduce eye fatigue, and be able to react faster to enemies appearing on screen if you play scouter position in first/third person shooter games, but it's very circumstantial, I would take the picture clearance and low latency over the extra hertzs anyday, we are talking about 0,02 miliseconds margin advantage from 240 hertzs to 360 hertzs, it's so minimal that it raises the question wether you should pick one or the other for reaction time or aim instead, for me it's aim, but I can understand why some people would want the first one to have slightly increased hardware reaction time and reduced eye fatigue.
I'm hopping we can get DyAc at 360 hertzs and beyond soon, that would be my wet dream, aiming is so much easier with it.

I play on 144hz. I feel like it looks so fast already and that 360 wouldn’t even be “game changing”. I feel like the jump to 240hz would be great enough.

@@sawyer.5436 that's exactly how I feel. Visually I can easily see smoothness difference between 144hz vs 240hz. but for performance after switch back and fort 10 times I really don't see improvements on my aim or skill. But from 60hz to 144hz my aim gets so much better. Also don't forget input lag. that's so much more important for performance than just pure smoothness. At the end of the day even if you downgrade from 240hz to 144hz your eyes get used to it in 1 hour and choppiness of 144hz disappear so fast and you don't see performance change. So 144hz still is standard in my opinion

Interesting take that IPS is the way forward for gaming monitors, as much as I like IPS panels and use them for both of my secondary monitors I'll still use the VA as my main because the contrast ration and actually having blacks is good.

Have you tested the VG258QM or VG289QM monitors from Asus? I recently purchased both monitors and returned the VG259QM (IPS) display. The "0.5ms" quoted from asus on the VG258QM just seemed so much smoother vs the IPS variant at 1ms

@Optimum Tech May I ask you what AMA and Dyac do you use on the XL2546K (After trying both the VG259QM and the XL2546K the Benq is now my main, I tested motion clarity and I absolutely agree with everything you said in this video, IPS made a great leap in terms of refresh rates but response times compliance are still subpar compared to 240hz TN alternatives)

Hey Ali, how important would you say is the G-Sync Module? I currently own a AW3420DW (3440x1440, 120Hz, IPS, G-Sync Module) as my main, but study abroad and didn't manage to get that massive thing over to the other country. Now looking for a normal 1440p monitor as a temporary solution, but the G-Sync module ups the price from €300 (LG 27GN800) or €400 (LG 27GP850) to €700 for something like an AW 2721D. The Alienware also has 240Hz which I most likely won't need with my 3070Ti, playing mostly AAA shooters, and HDR600. Do you think the G-Sync module is a big deal? I honestly also don't want this temporary monitor to outshine my €900 Ultrawide, so that it looks bad compared to the new one when I get back to that thing :D
