Premium Fuel Mag '96 & early '97 Explorers had GT40 (3 bar heads casting, #F1ZE-AA, 63-66 cc chambers). Early '97-'01 got GT40P (3 bar, casting #F7ZE-AA, 58-61 cc chambers). GT40P also have "GTP" cast in them between the last spark plug on the right end and the last head bolt on the right (#1 or #8 plug depending on which side of the engine you're looking at). Info from "The Official Ford Mustang 5.0 Technical Reference & Performance Handbook" and "High-Performance Ford Parts Interchange" books and my back issues of "5.0 Mustang" and "Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords" magazines.
Now days aluminum heads are so cheap that cast iron heads are not worth the effort and the WC T-5 will not last for long if your are making good HP. I trashed one easily behind a 351w which is another subject because it is cheap and easy to drop a 351w in a fox body that it makes the 302 (5.0) almost not worth it anymore.
"Cheap" depends on your budget. I got this entire gt40 style top end (heads, upper, lower intake, furl rails, fuel reg, EGR, Throttle body, and everything else) for $250. Normally a set up like this would run between $300 and $400. You're lucky if you can get a decent set of aluminum heads for $1000, then you'll still need the rest of the top end, or it's a waste. I threw in the bit about the WC t5 because in an earlier video I pointed out that when buying a fox car, folks will try to tell you that the WCt5 is some special bulletproof transmission and try to justify a substantial price hike, when in reality, the WC t5 is actually just your standard transmission.
Depends on your budget and goals. Gt40s can be picked up for $200 still. You'll gain around 30hp depending on supporting mods. A used set of aluminum heads will run you at least a grand. You'll pick up maybe 20hp over the GT40s. Again, depending on mods. So is 20hp worth $800?
Are the Explorer GT40 heads the exact same GT40 heads that the Cobras had? Or are there any differences? Are they as reliable as the stock E7 heads on my GT? I bought a set from a junkyard, and I’m wondering if installing them on my 1995 GT is worth it. One more question: Which shorty headers will be a good match for GT40 heads in a Mustang? I know about buying new springs and roller rockers as well.
Jonathan Keith... 95 to the early 96 Explorers had the GT40 ( 3) bar heads. The GT40(p) heads have the (4) bar and straight spark plugs. They were on the newer 97 V8 Explorers
Darrin Carter Yes sir. I was wondering if the GT40 Explorer heads, which I have, are the same as the GT40 heads that were found on the 90’s Cobras, or if there are any differences. Also, I was wondering what shorty headers would be a good upgrade with my GT40 heads.
Thanks for the info. I can't figure out which I have, I don't want to remove the heads from my truck. I am not running EGR. I have F3ZM 6049 X302 stamped on them. Does that tell me which one I have?

Just saw your video and I was considering buying the gt40 heads off the explorer at the junk yard but they were rusted up a bit. Would it be worth buying them and cleaning them up? They have the 3 hash marks and the heads are just sitting in the back of the explorer.
Iron heads are going to show rust. What matters is the condition of the valve train and other crud. If you can get them cheaply, a machine shop will clean them up for $100 and you'll be all set.
To be more effective you should have had a side by side comparison, also wc transmissions started in '85. Gt heades started in late 95 on Explorers, threw at least 98, I pulled an engine out of a 98 that has gt heads.
robert white so.......why are you watching it? Trolling? Did not take your Mongolism Pills? Hitting the crack pipe to hard? Struggling with your Skoal habit? Or just an asshole?
in a GT40/GT40p setup, your biggest gains will come from porting the lower intake, however, if you look at the cost of porting, you may be better off going with aftermarket parts. GT40 stuff is great as because it's relatively cheap, but if you can shell out cash for porting, you can afford a better intake.
You can easily do it yourself if you have the right tools. I did mine myself with a die grinder and carbide bit. Just get gaskets to match the particular head and open them up. Number 5 runner could be straightened to help free up some hp
hi, I have a set of gt40p heads, i know that I need to change the valve springs, my Question is. Can I use the valve springs of my 5.0 H.O 1991 cam and stock engine?
swapping your stock springs in would really be a waste of time, you could, but if you're going to go through the work of swapping heads and springs, go the extra mile and get better springs. Your stock cam will be fine.
Hey is there a water coolet line that runs between the upper and lower intake on the driver's side. I see coolet dripping from the top of the intake to the lower intake about 3 inches back from the coil packs underneath the upper intake.
Premium Fuel Mag junkyardog had a video that I think explained what I see leaking. EGR Style intake has hoses hooking to a cooling block and a non EGR style has the cooling hoses going to the intake manifold. I have a 1998 Ford Explorer with a 5. 0 engine in it the coil packs run the front of the engine.
Sorry, i don't have a lot of knowledge on specific parts combinations, but your springs should depend on what cam you have, so search for spring recommendations based on the cam, the fact that you are running gt40 heads is kind of irrelevant, so don't let that side track you.
You'll have to enlarge the GT40P head bolt holes. 289/302 are 7/16" and 351 are 1/2". Headers might be a problem, no one ever made headers to fit a 5.8 with P heads.
should I go with gt40 heads on my stock 95 5.0 or should I rebuild my stock heads? im doing the head gasket right now but im not so sure if i should rebuild my stock heads or try and get a set of gt40 heads
all depends on what your price range is. if you're looking to stay cheap and simple, find yourself another set of e7 heads. If you can find a set you can probably get them for free. If you want to go gt40, you'll need the heads and intake, that could run you around $400 or more unless you get lucky
Premium Fuel Mag You don't HAVE to use the Explorer intake with GT40 or GT40P heads. Any SBF intake (E.F.I. or carburetor) will bolt to either head. I got my GTPs & intake (with TB, valve covers, injectors thrown in) from a local JY for $150! They had no idea they were sought after. They gave me a strange look and asked why I wanted them... probably shouldn't have told them-next time they'll charge more.
No, you don't really have to, but it would be a waste of time money and effort if you don't upgrade the intake. The standard intake is pretty crappy flowng, if you can't afford to upgrade it, no big deal, just enjoy the car the way it is, but don't spend a day bent over your engine bay with bloody knuckles for an upgrade that will make life difficult and you'll never see gans from. @@foxfordcatguy2283
Premium Fuel Mag I wasn't suggesting putting the stock intake back on with Explorer heads. (Some people might already have a decent aftermarket intake but stock heads: Believe me I've seen it- as in an Edelbrock Victor carb intake on completey stock '86 block w/crappy stock heads & stock cam!?!?) You said you "NEED" the intake, too. As if you were saying the Explorer heads only fit the Explorer intake. (Plenty of guys use them with carburetor intakes and I knew one guy who used a cheap Professional Products EFI intake.) Although in one of my old "5.0 Mustang" mags there was a guy running one of the NMRA stock classes where he had to use the stock Fox intake but was allowed to use the GT40Ps. I was simply saying any SBF intake will work. The whole reason I bought my Explorer parts is because my stock daily driver '89 GT has a valve tap (I'm sure it could use a new timing chain as well) and I certainly don't like doing all that work then putting it back together stock without making SOME improvement. I always joke I don't even like to do my brakes unless I can make my car quicker.
based on my conclusions, GT40 "upgrade" is not worth the time and effort. It took me an entire week to swap the heads and cam on my 302, not even to mention tuning time. More skilled mechanics could probably do it in a day or 2. I got significant gains using much nicer heads and cam. I would be angry to do that level of work only to gain a measley 10 to 15 hp. If you want easy bolt on HP, find yourself a good heads, cam and intake package. Edlebrock, and Trickflow are good places to start.
in all honesty, gt40 heads really aren't worth the money people want for them and GT40p heads aren't worth the stress of upgrading and getting them to fit based on what I discussed in this vid. If you want to do your cam, then buy the cam you like and rock with that while you save for a decent set of aluminum heads like Trickflow or Edelbrock. It took me a week to swap my cam, just working slow and never doing it before. If you want to do the cam first, and then do heads later, you could easily swap heads in an evening, but save your money, don't buy a set of gt40's.

@@stephenfrasca2637 Yeah, that's one way to do it. That formula's not for everyone, but if you want the cheapest way to a quick fun quarter, that's how you do it.
stephen frasca Are the heads stock? My '85 (see pic) with stock bottom end has a 750 dbl. pumper, Weiand Stealth intake, Power Heads CNC ported E7TEs (1.90 & 1.60 valves), Crane 2031 (.513/.529 lift & .276/.282 duration) cam, and Crane "Cobra" 1.7 roller rockers runs 12.5 at 109.
Dominic Delaurentis What's your goal? If you get GT40s or P heads cheap why bother rebuilding the stock E7s? It would cost the same to have either pair of heads redone. If you don't already have headers but want to upgrade them as well, Mac makes headers for GT40P heads in SN95s. I scored P heads, intake and TB for $150 at my local JY. So, I figured why not? My daily driver '89 GT (stock except for pulleys, 3.73s and T5 conversion) has a valve tap and I don't want to do all that work tearing it apart and just put the stock parts back on.
that's what I ended up doing. Funny thing is, I ended up with this gt40 stuff scraping $250 together trying to take advantage of a great deal. when it was all over, I had spent about 3k on all new top end, cam, and ecu. things got way out of hand.
You did not mention the spark plug angles on the P heads are not the same and they need special exhaust in my opinion the P heads are not worth the cash some of these guy are trying to get for them your better off with 351W heads there the same head as the GT40, I have seen pro comp 3036 heads for as little as $400 complete and there way better than any Iron head.
Speed costs $$$, How fast do you want to go? At a minimum, you could get away with doing valve springs and a cam, but swapping a cam is a ton of labor, and if you're going to do all of that, you might as well grab a nicer set of heads.
i was thinking a good cam, AFR. heads, 1.7 roller rockers . but I cant find headers that will clear the left side. steering shaft in the way. not sure if shorty headers will work.

A LOT folks get confused on the different upgrades made on the WC trannys ............INTERNAL UPGRADES AND CHANGES ARE WHAT MAKES THE T5 DIFFERENT FROM YEAR TO YEAR. it grinds me when someone picks up a T5 out of a V6 and try to pass it off as a V8 application......they seem to think "World Class" is some super strong T5 from a different planet, and keep cramming WC to impress you. You always do new valve springs with cam. So in swapping heads from different vehicles the cams would be different

Can a Ford explorer's upper intake fit a 5.0 FOXBODY' S lower intake direct or do you need modifications?
It needs the Explorer lower. Look at the two intakes. You can see the difference.
Hey bro when you said you have to change the GT40P springs typically which springs should be used instead?
Best to use whatever springs are recommended for the cam you have.
True no factory built Mustang came with GT40 intake.
As far as tuner car companies. 92 SAAC Mustangs came with GT40 intake.
It's generic like saying let's get a "Coke" when you want DR PEP.
There are Zspec t5 transmission which have a lower first gear amd thats the t5 you want.
No.
Z spec has a higher first gear of 2.95
usual ones are lower 3.35
Six cyls are even lower.
Note... Higher rpm means a lower gear.
Yes, they are the same ones used on the '93 SVT Cobra. It also had roller rockers standard.

GT40 heads only came on the cobra, Trucks had GT40p. You can also look at the angle of the spark plugs to tell.
did you swap the rockers ? tf Springs is a must thinking of a tf stage 1 cam with gt40p heads
these heads will need rockers and springs to be useful. OEM rockers will work, but you r better off getting rollers.

3 hash are the gt40s.
You will need a valve job, bowl cleanup, and springs. Minimum.

Jonathan Bachman The vid is about Ford heads, not LS. That's why we're watching it.
Wasn't gonna pay you anyway. Thanks.
would you recommend getting the intake ported while it's out? is it worth the hassle to do it for more horsepower gains?
in a GT40/GT40p setup, your biggest gains will come from porting the lower intake, however, if you look at the cost of porting, you may be better off going with aftermarket parts.
You can port a GT40 style intake to flow the same ams ever higher numbers than a edelbrock RPM II
hi, I have a set of gt40p heads, i know that I need to change the valve springs,
my Question is. Can I use the valve springs of my 5.0 H.O 1991 cam and stock engine?
swapping your stock springs in would really be a waste of time, you could, but if you're going to go through the work of swapping heads and springs, go the extra mile and get better springs. Your stock cam will be fine.
tanks man, appreciate your help
Go to Alexparts, he specializes in drop in valve sets for these heads. Cheap too!
What springs and headers work best with the p heads
it's best to go with whatever is recommended for your cam.
Hey is there a water coolet line that runs between the upper and lower intake on the driver's side. I see coolet dripping from the top of the intake to the lower intake about 3 inches back from the coil packs underneath the upper intake.
I'm not sure buddy, but SBF motors don't have any coil packs.
Premium Fuel Mag The '96-'01 5.0 Explorers/Mountaineers had coil packs instead of distributors.
Hey i have a question about gt40p head has to do with the spring valves and stage 1 trikflow cam you have any idea of what i need
Sorry, i don't have a lot of knowledge on specific parts combinations, but your springs should depend on what cam you have, so search for spring recommendations based on the cam, the fact that you are running gt40 heads is kind of irrelevant, so don't let that side track you.
Ok thanks man so i saw in one of your video you change the alternator for a better one you have any recommendations on that
T5 won't handle more than 330 rwhp
wat r the stock flow #s for both if any one knows?
Will GT 40 or GT 40p heads fit 1990 351 Windsor?
yes they will
You'll have to enlarge the GT40P head bolt holes. 289/302 are 7/16" and 351 are 1/2". Headers might be a problem, no one ever made headers to fit a 5.8 with P heads.
FoxFordCatGuy ☝️👍 needs bigger holes for head bolts

should I go with gt40 heads on my stock 95 5.0 or should I rebuild my stock heads? im doing the head gasket right now but im not so sure if i should rebuild my stock heads or try and get a set of gt40 heads
all depends on what your price range is. if you're looking to stay cheap and simple, find yourself another set of e7 heads.
I’m just looking for easy bolt on hp and I wanna know the easiest way
based on my conclusions, GT40 "upgrade" is not worth the time and effort.
Easy way is a good set of aluminum heads.
I have a sn95 in future I like to do heads put I don't know witch ones to go with the stock ones or gt40 an read do one of then. an e303 or b303 cam.
in all honesty, gt40 heads really aren't worth the money people want for them and GT40p heads aren't worth the stress of upgrading and getting them to fit based on what I discussed in this vid. If you want to do your cam, then buy the cam you like and rock with that while you save for a decent set of aluminum heads like Trickflow or Edelbrock. It took me a week to swap my cam, just working slow and never doing it before. If you want to do the cam first, and then do heads later, you could easily swap heads in an evening, but save your money, don't buy a set of gt40's.
dude i ran a .030 over 5.0 12.5 pistons gt-p heads roller rockers x 303 cam and 2 450 holleys ans a auto c4 and , 3000 stall 4.10's and ran 12.40's all day . fun car low bucks
Just Start with some aftermarket aluminum heads and you will not be sorry .
that's what I ended up doing.
These fit on a 351w right?

what can I do to bump up power in my truck. 5.0 EFI. with 2 coil packs. any thoughts?
Speed costs $$$, How fast do you want to go? At a minimum, you could get away with doing valve springs and a cam, but swapping a cam is a ton of labor, and if you're going to do all of that, you might as well grab a nicer set of heads.
i was thinking a good cam, AFR. heads, 1.7 roller rockers . but I cant find headers that will clear the left side. steering shaft in the way. not sure if shorty headers will work.
yeah, I don't know a lot about headers for gt40p heads, unless you want blocked spark plugs like I showed.
